- Singer, songwriter and renowned actor Kris Kristofferson has died at 88. Some of the biggest names in music from Elvis Presley to the Grateful Dead recorded his songs and he even wrote the number one country hit “Sunday Morning Coming Down” for his friend Johnny Cash. NBC’s Joe Fryer reports for TODAY with a look back at Kristofferson’s life and legacy.

Greetings from South Africa. Rest in peace, Kris. The greatest songwriter. I met Kris 26 March 2014. His parting words to me was: "I like your spirit". I told Kris that i was a fan for decades and thanked him for his amazing songs and music.

I blessed to see his final performance at Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday concert at the Hollywood bowl last year. I was moved by the way the sang and the authenticity of the lyrics.

Kris became a Christian, so he's with the Savior now. Always liked his music and A Star is Born was a classic movie.

My idol for years. Last month I played, at my guitar, one of his songs to my sweetheart in a cheap motel room. She loved it.
I was around 17 when I got a KK album. Brought it home and the first time I heard Sunday Morning Coming down, it felt like I traveled all the way to a big city and experienced the lonesomeness and heartache as if I was right there. Just pure SIMPLE magic. Had to drink a beer last night even though I’m on pain meds after surgery. RIP KK and thank you sir for the good times.
