I don't think I've ever seen a game that's just "boot it up and Immediate self-aware 4th wall break wink at camera satire" before even getting to the main menu
Aw dude, this game is just _overflowing_ with the Y2K aesthetic. All those futuristic fonts, the small goggle glasses, the kinda-Matrix look to everything, the post-vaporwave techno backgrounds, trying to be so ridiculously cyberpunk despite the flipphones and boyband haircuts...
@@NucleaRaptor The way I see it, vaporwave and Y2K are basically two halves of the decade. Vaporwave being late 80s/early 90s and Y2K (or cyber-vaporwave) being the late 90s/early 2000s.
Man, look at this late 90's/early 2000's slab of beef of a man, like 80% of the white dudes I knew had that haircut or the bowl cut equivalent. The opening, if done straight, could be a news story now and I would wholeheartedly believe it, except for the guns part. 8:00 (The Man Who Sold The World plays) "Jake, it has been 9 years."
The picture you there isn't from Mario 3 (on the lady's computer screen), but rather a Swedish kids show that aired in the 70's: "Fem myror är fler än fyra elefanter" which basically means "5 ants are more than 4 elephants". Really good spotting there!! Amuse is also a Swedish gaming developer.
Still remember the first time I watched Game Center CX and they just blasted the Headhunter theme like it was nothing, giving me a strong case of "wait no that's illegal"
Ahh Headhunter. The game with one of the best, by far, travel songs in the genre. This soundtrack was done by Richard Jacques, of SEGA fame. The same person who did the Sonic R soundtrack, did some music for Jet Set Radio, and was responsible for many of the songs in Metropolis Street Racer before the series became Project Gotham Racing, with Microsoft, and more and more music tracks were from different bands. He may have had a hand in a few songs in PGR1, but his talent is his ability to do many genres of music. A very versatile guy and quite fast in terms of delivering original tunes. Headhunter is one of his first forays, in Videogames, where he began to really flex his orchestral chops compared to his more electronic sound of past titles. Still, even here, you see him mix his orchestral with electronic instruments, particularly flaunted in this game's travel theme.
Man, the travel music in this game made really it feel like a blockbuster. I remember thinking it was a real step into the next generation at the time. It's really effective and memorable.
I always keep ragging on the impossibly generic faux-Hollywood orchestra that are infesting current year AAA games, but Headhunter was just early enough into 6th gen when these types of scores were just coming into vogue and still sounded fresh and exciting. I'm a big fan of Jacques' work on Sanic and MSR, but Headhunter is his magnum opus for sure. *Jack's Theme* alone is a top contender for the GOAT VGM hall of fame.
Headhunter's soundtrack deserved a better game (And i legit sorta like headhunter but man, those bits where you ride the bike to get enough XP to do the next mission fucking suck)
The game really does go fun places though so i'd reccomend playing more but if you can get like some kind of gameshark code or something to give yourself extra skillpoints that'd be the way to go.
This was one of my DC favorites, and I think you could easily do a full series. There's the Greywolf fight, the Ramirez fight, the bomb defusal, the Aquadome arena, the Angela/ship level, and the game leads up to a Resident Evil mansion sequence complete with it's own Tyrant knockoff. Don't play Redemption though. It's just...ugh...
@@CJJC Just saying, I would buy a Mitchell open world adventure game tomorrow. Think LA Noire, but if your main character needed a beer and/or a nap every 20 minutes.
Yes I don’t know how we come up with the name. Must have been lying there subconsciously. Even more odd is no one at SEGA or the testers reacted to it. I mean worst case we could have had a legal issue with it
Hell yeah, I wanna see more of this. This game looks so weird, like it seems like a well made game, but it's kind of carbon copying games that came before but not in downright terrible way. It seems like a well made put together game.
I loved this until the mission where you have to race around the city deactivating bombs on a timer and it’s frogging impossible. Months I spent on that mission
The motorcycle was a pain, until you just gamed the system. There was one long stretch of road that was straight and you could just ride on the shoulder or sidewalk at top speed and rack of the points. If you tried to do it legitimately it was really hard and not fun.
I remember Winback! I played it in a friends basement on his N64. Has anyone played the sequel? Winback: The Poseidon Kerfuffle... I'd wager on the possibility of some interesting flophouse content somewhere in that game. At least for those like myself that love obscure and failed franchises. The sequel to Headhunter is another one that most never knew and also has little representation on youtube.
He should do video on it. I never got the chance to play the games though. I should have bought the Ps2 version when I had the chance. I used to have a Gamepro mag with game ad and review on it which I read to death! But yeah! Haha.
Amuze. I know what youre thinking. These guys mustah just made headhunter and thats it and thats why we dont know them. But they have a vast library of titles youd be surprised by. Theres headhunter....and also headhunter redemption.
I would love to see more headhunter, and the even more bizarre headhunter: redemption. Both games give me immense nostalgic feels for many wasted hours in high school
I'm re-playing the game now, having experienced it first in September 2021, and am absolutely loving it, from the atmosphere, style, snappy combat, music, details for the time, familiar satire of a not-so-impossible dystopian futuristic situation, entertaining but slightly hammy story to the mission structure and Leila tests. While it's a shame that it hasn't been ported to modern systems and that there will probably never be a third or fourth game in the series, it's great that people are coming to it years later!
This was so fun to watch you getting confused and then drawn into it. Headhunter is my favorite game. It’s like a spy-novel-satire in game-form. It’s loooong too. And well worth playing.
23:08 The picture on her screen is from the intro to a Swedish kids' show called "Fem myror är fler än fyra elefanter", had to look it up and it turns out the developers are Swedish, so I guess they put it in there as a funny little easter egg. Headhunter is an amazing Dreamcast game. I imported it back in the day and loved it. It is still fun to play nowadays but you really had to play it when it was somewhat current to truly appreciate it.
26:52 BEST EPIC suspenseful music for doing nothing hahaha!! WinBack's multiplayer death matches were some of the funniest things. My friends and I would be laughing so hard, after just 10 minutes of playing, that we'd be crying. 😂 😂 😂 😂
I assume he's playing on an emulator, because while the game was always a bit weird I don't remember it being too difficult to play on the controller. The motorcycle though was always tough. Headhunter was an awesome Dreamcast game, so I'd like to see more.

If I had this back in 01 on my Dreamcast this would have blown my mind lol super ambitious for its time and those fmv's are the perfect amount of cheese with genuine world building
Of course we remember Operation Winback! You should make a let’s play of it sometime. Played it a ton on the N64, but I never finished it. And do a full playthrough of Hybrid Heaven while you’re at it *wink*
The newscast seems to be less and less satirical as time passes
Robocop is the same way.
The story development in this game is awesome
Mission 1: Investigate an homicide
Final mission: Save the world.

Punished Jay
Yes motorcycles don't have a reverse, so you have to waddle backwards with your feet.
Jack looks like Jake from "Ride To Hell" but with [relatively more] normal body proportions
I was gonna say the same thing! His hands are slightly smaller thank catcher's mits
Matt, motorcycles dont have reverse, they have your legs
I think Adam Jensen is related to this guy.

I was thinking the same thing about the gas station. Like why is this place full of Resident Evil puzzles
it's like a robo cop and starship troopers influenced winback/RE/GTA with light hints of MGS and omicron
