Hey Andrew - I wrote you a while back on your Pneuma review video. DC's a buddy and i'm part of the Tool tribe - i designed the modular synth he uses live with Tool. I answered your question about his influences, informed more from African and Indian disciplines than Latin. Anyway - these two guys are two of DC's Kansas City friends. It's his hometown and still visits frequently. Kansas City has a huge jazz scene.
Danny is very into jazz. His favorite player is Tony Williams, no surprise there and he gigs at the Baked Potato - a legendary LA hole in a wall a jazz club - with the Doug Webb Band and his old fusion group Volto all the time. A matter of fact he's playing there tonight - fist gig since Covid. Before it was probably twice a month. He really enjoys doing these gigs. One - the guys are all A-list pedigree LA studio musicians, so the level of musicianship is stratospheric. Secondly, a good percentage of the music he plays there he's not heard before the countdown the night he does it and quoting him - it keeps him on his toes. Musical calisthenics if you will.
I showed him a bit of your Pneuma video, he thought it was great. This is one of his Baked Potato gigs. Of course this one he had heard before lol:
ua-cam.com/video/JdfXCz8Qav8/v-deo.html
DC is a legend, he has heavy rock conditioning in the way he approaches hitting the drums. If you wanna call it jazz then jazz drummers, slide, glance, snap and pop with huge dynamic range, while still stoking the fire. Danny is one of the greatest centre of drum beat masters of our time, so it's different but what I love is that he is doing it and loving it obviously!! He has the courage to be humble after all he has achieved! He has progressed since I last watched him in this great little band as well. Fast learner!!
Remember, Danny played with Carole King and King Crimson. And his videos with Keyboard Madness are pure gold.
It is easy to forget that Danny is one of the smart kids who read notes drum notations and all these classical musical things.
After high-school, Danny Carey was able to secure a spot at th "Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas where he had Rex Stone as his drum instructor. After only 1 semester, Danny Carey relocated to Kansas City, where he enrolled at the University Of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) where he studied under Charmaine Asher-Wiley for the next 4 years. During this period of his life, Danny Carey had a lot of classical training, partook in recitals, and experienced Kansas City’s jazz scene as both a listener and a player.
One must never forget that Danny is a scholar (and we must smile as he always points out in interviews point out that he had some scholarships from his basketball qualities as a kid).
Danny is pretty high-brow when it comes to music. He hung out with the kids getting professional educations in jazz, brass and classical music.
He knows enough to, if he cared would flap me around for saying "I love the minor-scale transition in song ZZZ" - pointing out that the transition was Dorian Mode - not just minor scale. He would also deconstruct Bach rhythmically in his sleep (his father was an avid lover of classic music - and jazz). The chill dude would instantly say "ah baroque basso continuo" and stuff while telling you about the VERY crazy polyrhythms of Indian Tabla compositions that may cycle back at 7 etc (he actually took time to study Tabla under a teacher - and yes it is easy to hear in that in the drum-cam video of Pneuma)
Danny does not even hide his "elitist" (what most of the world call "educated" or "knowledgable") view on music when being interviewed. He has always been pretty frank by saying Tool does what they do because they are aware of how to do it with purpose.
Edit - I forgot to link Danny playing with kids here is one example ua-cam.com/video/rEfS-GkSWMQ/v-deo.html
Does he force the kids into the most complex rhythmically detailed solution to "the pot"? Nope. He hangs back and drums away and solving the odd meters a bit less polymetric.
This is not a dude who needs to prove how brilliant he is. He is admiring kids taking on layers of complexity way above them but can work amazingly well stripped down to something possible for a band to present.
(I know the true purpose of Danny Carey - he rescue Tool once a decade (starting by feeling sorry for their drummer not showing up for rehearsal) - and in between he is Batman - sneaking around in the shadows and drumming for any kid, jazz-band or old lady (I guess) to save music itself).
While grinning happily.
Fantastic info. Thank you!!!!
I've done a reaction on that also!!!
Danny just seems like such a warm guy eh!?
Someone I'd like to have a coffee with
He is adorable, man. Look at him playing the drums with these young talented people performing Tool at some gathering. And notice how this monster of a physical drummer never overpower the cool band of talented kids in front of him
ua-cam.com/video/-JWdh-F1xdQ/v-deo.html
That grin of his face is like "yay - a new generation of musicians taking a leap and getting it"
Another angle of his joy playing with the same band is here ua-cam.com/video/rEfS-GkSWMQ/v-deo.html
This smile is not the smile that some oracle give kids trying their best. This is the smile of a guy truly loving what is going on - while making some music happening.
These videos have always touched me. Because this is how I have seen masters of their trade behave through my life.
I've met him twice and yes he is. Very down to earth and an all around nice and genuine guy. He made me feel like we'd known eachother for years. He's very funny and smiles all the time which I think is fantastic
Oh, I forget - the band, I think it reads in one of the video-descriptions that they had no idea that Danny would be there. They have clearly practised. Studied. Thought about the song and structure. Practised more.
Kudos to them. There are really impressive hard work and musicality behind their live-performance - while having that guest drummer behind them :)
@@sarahp8058 Oh that is so great. And he exudes that without knowing him at all
@@glacieractivity Magic!
The keyboardist with the glasses is named Mitch Forman, and he has worked with some great names in jazz. I go to see him perform every chance I get!
I see you've become as enthralled with Danny's playing as the rest of us. He has a fusion band, VOLTO! Beautiful. They released a self-titled album a couple years ago. Give it a listen. Cheers!
Thanks Thomas!
I was about to reply to say that Andrew needs to check out Volto! So different, but still so Danny!
It's actually titled Incitare.
Watching the last video ( live) he had his hi hat in the center of the large kit and that made me think he may be left handed. Now watching this he is playing a traditional set up crossing his hands and open live . That’s a versatile dude, love it.
Yeah he's a drummers drummer!
Last month I bought the live stream from the baked potato jazz club in Los Angeles where Danny plays with the Doug Web all stars. It’s a real treat to watch Danny play jazz. I think the cat playing Organ is in that band? They still have the stream available on their website check it out sometime if you haven’t already
Yo Joel!
Thanks man. Hope to see it
Hey guys! As a way to prioritize the amount of reaction requests I'm getting via email/instagram and in the UA-cam comments...
I am going to try and do the Patron picks first. There is no limit on the Patreon (could be $1/month).

I still love you if you are NOT a patreon contributor. And I will still try and get to your pick. It's a just a 'Thank You' to those that help out with costs/time involved with doing the vids.
Also going to have polls on there so you can vote for what you want to hear/see.
Disclaimer: No guarantees. I can only do what I can do. If a vid is blocked... it's blocked. I'll do my best!
More jazz drummer please ! Vander, cobbham, bozzio, bruford, fabulous Michael walden, trilok gurtu, Dennis Chambers, French drummer Damien Schmitt, the fantastic Paco Sery morgan agren and many others
Danny studied Jazz percussion specifically in University.
Oh right!
And classical too!
So interesting, I’ve watched a lot of Danny’s video’s tonight. This is the one that got my feet going crazy.
Well chosen 👍🏼
Thanks!
I would like to suggest Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree. Very jazzy rock drummer. All band members are fantastic musicians.
Sound of Muzak would be a great intro
Gavin is insane!
Andrew Rooney Drums Gavin Harrison and Marco Minnemann are two of my favorite drummers alive.
That was bad ass !.....Funny how following Danny has now introduced me to Jazz that i like. LOL
You should watch Danny Carey’s Lateralus drum cam. Insane!
Great call!
This was awesome. I'm glad I caught this. Danny does play in a traveling jazz band as well. And good on you if it was Guinness or coffee either way it's a win
COFFEE!
All day... every day and twice on sundays!
Same
Please do some reactions to Volto you'll love it. Danny plays drums for them too. They are jazzy with some rock elements as well. Drumbeaux would be a good start
I'll check it out!
The keyboardists are Mitchell Foreman and Bob Kafkis
Liege Of Inveracity-Eric Morotti (from SUFFOCATION) !
Thanks for the recommend Gonzalo!
would love to see you react to JD Beck & Domi
Hope to check it out!
Domi is amazing. Jd beck is amongst the greats. Both of them at such a young age, amazing.
If you love some drumming and keyboard action, you should totally react to Lingus by Snarky Puppy
Yeah that's some crazy stuff
Could you react to Biblical Violence by Hella (math-rock) or Spectrum by Billy Cobham (jazz fusion)?
Actually, I'm not sure that song itself qualifies as jazz "fusion", but I associate Cobham with jazz fusion so much I guess I just label anything of his jazz fusion.
Thank you!
Cobham def fusion!
Danny added dynamic but switching the snare 3/4. Usually dislike reaction vids. Good stuff
I couldn't find it on your videos but, have you heard of Snarky Puppy? If not, listen to Lingus
You'll love it. Absolutely
Just commented the same...didn't see yours!
Yo I've done a vid on it!!!!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I saw that video right on release hahahha
Also, I was the one who comented on the Meme you've used in it.
Danny Carey, rockin' the little bop kit, still has the acute heptagram on there, still working the ritual magick and sacred geometry.
That espresso looks delish!!!! 🤗
You wouldn't believe how good our coffee is. We found a GREAT espresso place. Fresh beans :)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums im sooo jealous!! Coffee is life!!!
I’d really love to hear your input on Eloy Casagrande playing raging void. Guy is a machine
He's insane!
React to Matt Halpern from Periphery! that dude is awesome at drums
He certainly is!
The keyboard players are Jeff Babko and Mitch Forman
Yeah I realised afterward. A bit embarrased I didn't recognise Babko! I'm sure Forman is amazing also :)
Prior to and during the beginnings of Tool Danny was a studio jazz musician. His history in prior comments lol
Arranged and performed by Jeff Babko, Mitch Forman, and Danny Carey. You ask about who they are. Jeff Babko plays jazz, on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Yeah I realised afterward!
Jeff Babko also played keyboards on the VOLTO! album.
Hey have you ever seen Gojira's drummer Mario Duplantier ?
No. A few people have recommended him!
Danny Carey is in my opinion one of the greatest drummers of all time
Hard to argue
Law and Order , Criminal Intent - Danny Carey
Dude check the drum tracking of ulcerates "stare into death and be still"! Jamie Saint Merat is one of the best drummers in metal right now!!
He's amazing
He plays in a jazz fusion band called volto ? (Anyone correct me on that spelling) and dude. Go check out any of Gavin Harrison’s work. Any of it.
Yeah man. Gavin is a monster
Andrew Rooney Drums or if you fancy something a little different. Go check out zakir hussein. He has played in a band sigh John McLaughlin for the last 40odd years. Top bloke.
Baard kolstad - moon playthrough.
Thanks for the recommend!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums no problem, that video he has on moon is incredible :^) hope it shows up at some point.
For a totally different view of Danny, check out ua-cam.com/video/rEfS-GkSWMQ/v-deo.html - subbing for a high school band's drummer to play The Pot.
Reaction on the way!!!
Told you he played jaaaaaazz (commented this on the Pneuma vid reaction)
YESSSS
@@AndrewRooneyDrums 🤔🤔 You angry??
How about a reaction to The Aristocrats - Blues Fuckers? (Mexico - Culture Clash DVD). They look like having a lot of fun.
Thanks for the recommend!
React to either Gojira or Gene Hoglan
Yeah lot's of people are asking for those!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Gene Hoglan has a calmness about his drumming style that is out of this world
Why Gojira? How is Marco's drumming exceptional? I'm constantly seeing him being called out in discussions about the greats, but I simply don't see anything special in his style. He's just solid. Nothing else. I'd compare him to Joey Jordison (another metal-drummer that gets called out pretty often without decent reason) but with Danny? No sir. Not remotely close.
@@maciejs3126 Because he is advancing quickly... already really good chops...but his creativity stands out. So, it's that solidity with creativity.
@@maciejs3126 his timing and double bass technique are clean
Reminds me of A Clockwork Orange vibe.
The film!?
Sounds like a Phish jam
That was Great!! Some phenomenal keyboardists. Although I didn't consider that Jazz. Maybe John Bonham & Nick Mason!? If open. .. Gavin Harrison Cheating The Polygraph or Marvin Smitty Smith Greensleeves from the Buddy Rich memorial.
It's 3am and I have no idea how I got here
Hey Dave!!!
Listen to Volto
It's Danny Carey . You should always expect a Solo .
HAHA true!
I just subscribed, Danny is a mind boggling drummer, it's awesome to see a professional drummer experience this guy's art and share his thoughts on it, please do keep these coming! Have you heard or have an opinion on the band Gojira? Drummer's name is Mario Duplantier, maybe check out one their songs? Josh Steffen did some cool drum covers on the band!
Thanks Lukas!
Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree next please
He's amazing!
He plays at the Baked Potato a lot with, The Doug Webb Band, and others, and visits some of the School of Rock locations. He also has a fusion band called VOLTO!, that he also plays live with. ua-cam.com/video/GKEVaTrRFe0/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/coaUBtou82k/v-deo.html
PLEASE REACT TO GODLESS TIMES BY RINGS OF SATURN
So many people to get to!!!
I would love to see a reaction of Chris Adler from Lamb of God: ua-cam.com/video/sUKsW2l5jZM/v-deo.html
Or something more extreme - Alexandre Pelletier from Despised Icon: ua-cam.com/video/VNTYd0jBLEM/v-deo.html
Thanks Viktor! Hope to get to it soon
Remember your round table podcast with Jamie Saint Merat? He mentioned Kai Hahto, an amazing metal drummer from Finland, he also plays jazz ua-cam.com/video/YxR6u-kj5Vg/v-deo.html :D
Thanks for the reminder!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Glad I could be of use. Though, I admit a bit of personal interest since Kai Hahto's work with Rotten Sound ranks among my all time favourites.
Show us more of your cat!
Please
Progressive rock has branched out of jazz so technically any professional progrock musician one way or another familiar and capable of playing jazz. You can't be proficient in progressive music without jazz roots.
It certainly helps!
He almost almost always play with the snares off.
Interesting
Andrew Rooney Drums Yeah, I was in a band and Tool was all of the members favorite band except mine. So I did some research and found he mostly plays with snares off and no muffling whatsoever on his bass drums. I think it was a studio video I watched and he explained the drums were tuned to D and how open he liked his sound without dampening or muffling but maybe that was just for recording, I’m not sure.
Miles Davis
PREMIER...WTF
Hey Cory! Chose Premiere so I can watch with ya'll. I'm too busy before then. TBH I'm not hip to all the UA-cam functions.
Is that the best option to watch and chat with others as it airs?
Danny Carey is God
A real musician has to know some jazz standards.
Metal drummer: "I'm a musician!"
Musician: "let's jam over some II-V-I."
Metal drummer: "that's some weird time signature..."
Drummer's don't need to know changes though. Standards, sure, it's well-rounding. But if you're saying a metal drummer who doesn't know jazz standards isn't a musician, you're a weirdo. What about Konnakol, African and Latin rhythms and movement? The more you know, but it doesn't just stop at jazz standards and turnarounds...
There's just too much in music to know everything. The more we learn, the better, but it's no shame if we don't know this or that.
@@Lucifri It comes down to personal goals at the end of the day.
@@KiraPlaysGuitar agree! Music is not a competition. It's about expression and having fun.
Love this thread. It's about fun. The art. And enjoyment!
The great thing about music is there is no 'best'. It ain't the olympics.
I love the subjectivity of it. You like something? You like it. End of
Being a Drummer, for over 45 year's.... This Gentleman, Danny Carvey just has NEVER ONCE!! IMPRESSED ME AT ALL,WHAT SO EVER!!! SORRY,BECAUSE I NEVER LIKE PUTTING DOWN ANY GOOD DRUMMER!!!! BUT THIS GENTLEMAN HAS NEVER EVER IMPRESSED ME,NOT EVEN 1 IODA!!! HIS PLAYING IS NEVER,EVER,AT ANY POINT, CHALLENGING WHAT SO EVER!!! I CAN ALWAYS FEEL EXACTLY WHAT HE IS GOING TO PLAY EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!
I love Danny Carey, but he's definitely not one of the best jazz drummers in the world. Probably not even the best jazz drummer on his street
