me too i have 30 blueberys in them 5 years plus and going strong im about to pot up thirty figs in them 10 dollars a piece here in the sf bay area cut it in falf and its 5$ each you just got to clean the sauce out that comes in them
Thank You for the video. I just picked up 12 of those tubs for a trial. I have used decorative whisky barrels before, but they are very expensive these days. I would throw a lose weed barrier or burlap on top of the 4-inch tube in order to prevent the soil from blocking those tiny holes.
Great video as always!! Would it be possible for you to post the links for the products you used to make the SIP along with the dimensions of the tubes and the pipe? Thanks!
I make ollas out of 4" terra cotta pots for vegetables plants. The pots are buried with the plants. The roots of the plants wick off the unfinished terra cotta. This is the second year using, being successful last year. As of today, I've already have Roma tomatoes and Shisito peppers. Im in growing zone 8a in West Central Georgia.
Hi the soil mix I use for my fig and fruit trees is 1 bag pine fine bark mulch 1/2 bag coco core mix and 1/2 bag black cow and some perlite. Will this self watering system work with my soil mix. This is the best mix for fruit trees that I have used my trees love this mix. I would like to use this self water pot great idea.... Thanks..
I enjoy the great content you put out. I'm just not sure which I enjoy more? Your fig content or your shirt collection?? I'm trying some single node cutting now hopefully I will be successful
Very nice video tutorial as always and good looking trees ….how do you drain the excess water for storage in the winter cause it’ll be heavy to lean that big pot on one side TIA🇨🇦
I just remembered. A week or so back. I noticed an ant hill built around the little trunk of the tree and put thiazide granules on it. Maybe that poisoned the tree. Anyway, thanks for your reply.
I planted my first year cuttings into a 17 gallon sip pot in the spring. They grew huge as single leaders, I’m wondering what I should do with it for the winter storage. Do I empty all the water out, or just leave as is and put it in the garage. Thanks
I've gotten lots of rain, so my soil is soaked. I dumped the reservoirs by tilting the pots. They have all the moisture they need for many months now. But I'll put some water in pots in maybe January.
Hey there. I planted a fig tree this year. It was just a 3 or 4 ft. Stem. No leaves. It's been a couple months and no budding and the "trunk" is turning Grey and the very top 6 I chest is turning g dark. Any suggestions? From Alabama.
There’s a chance it’s gone. At this point scratch the trunk about an inch above soil. You should see green if it’s alive. If it’s brown keep scratching.
@@lukeott58 empty livestock mineral tub. they sell them full of salt and minerals at rural king and tractor supply. but when they are empty they don't have much use. So they just have a ton of them sitting around. Red or yellow usually. No holes so great for the self wicking tubs.
Great instructional video. I would try this but for the fact that there is no way I could keep moving this weight in and out of my garage all Spring, as I do every day now with 19 large potted figs, even on trays with wheels. I am in zone 5 b and it is only 45 degrees today, very windy yet again, no sun for 9 days, rain, and down to 39 at night. This is strange weather for May🙆♀️
Do you worry about soil getting in the water reservior even with the weed barrier on the end of the tubes?. Would you recommend adding more weed barrier on the top of the tubs the dirt would sit on? Thank you. I have a lot of figs i propagated over winter that are ready to transplant into pots lije this.
Quick question...do you just throw a handful of ozmacote in your reservoir and just forget it or do you water it down before pouring it in. Reason I'm asking is because I'm going on a cruise and I don't want to overwhelme the person watering my figs.
Is there anyway to air layer a persimmons tree like a nakita’s Gift Persimmons Tree and grow successfully from an air layer or does it have to be grafted on an American Persimmons Root stock

I water into the reservoir and then don't have to water again for a week. And the plants grow better and fruit more than same sized pots. This is the ultimate 20g pot. It will beat 25g pots.
@@thenotoriousfig thanks for the reply. I've been trying to grow figs in the ground without much luck. Super hot here (Tucson), decided to grow in containers so thanks for the info, I will try this.
That method of extending the zip ties is genious.
Thanks!
I use 55 gallon drums cut in half. It's a different plastic, lasts longer than any plastic you buy. I have some them over 10 years old.
I'm tempted to do this, but 55g is a monster lol
@The Notorious FIG I cut them in half and have 2 containers. Get the ones without lids, solid tops with bong holes.

You can also buy drain sock if you use the slotted type. Or over the end. Gather up the end and secure with a twist tie.

The buckets and tube can be purchased at Lowe's. The dimensions are in the video. Best of luck!

I've heard of this method, sounds interesting!
Molasses tubs work great, check with your local ranchers.

You start to get a feel for when the pot lightens up. You can tip them fairly easily just enough to drain most water. Thanks for the comment!

Does some of the soil not stay in contact with the water at all times as there are gaps between the pipes?

Great job on the video. I’m a little confused about how the water wicks itself up. Maybe I’m overthinking it.
The roots at the bottom and the soil will transfer it by contact.
Looks like I'll be doing that for my Godfather and Red Lebanese. Keep up the great videos
Thanks!
Nice bow

I have been getting 22 gallon livestock mineral buckets off marketplace for $5.00 each. They are used. But anyone that has them usually has a bunch.
That’s probably the best way to go. I needed Black for my space.
Not sure what a 22 gallon livestock is? How would it be posted on marketplace?

If you don’t mind the color in your garden space these are the best to get.

Do you just put these away in winter same as you do you potted figs? I assume you any excess water from the bottom?
Yes. I'll also dump the excess water.

Never worried about. I imagine it could happen. I have several that are operational after 4 years.
How often do you have to fill your sips with water?
I understand the PVC but what is the purpose of the pipes at the bottom and how does this help to water the plants?
the soil is on either side of the pipes. the air inside helps the drainage work.
@@thenotoriousfigdoesnt the soil clog the openings of the 4 in tubes? I wish I could have seen when you first put in the soil and where it goes.

I mean maybe 1/5 of the little red scooper in the reservoir would work. You won’t be gone long so more than that is unnecessary.
@thenotoriousfig I'm going to be gone for around 2 weeks. Just thinking out the box for a bit so I don't come home to a disaster

Hi Notorious. Different Leon here. What’s the spelling of that fig? Andata? Thank you!
Ondata from Figues du Mondes collection in France
Thank you!
If I have black tubing with the slits, the entire pipe needs to be wrapped, right?
No just the ends
Why do you want air in the pipes, so you drill the drain hole about an inch lower than top of the pipe/hose?
yes you need that airspace in there to make it all work.
geotextile
You need to fight to fight to find a hobby
