Angelito-exquisito-thermalito, whats the honest difference and Arely they similar enough to chose one and go on?
Angelito is a top 5 fig. Exquisito is fun and interesting. Thermalito is not top 20, White Madiera #1 is way better.
You have a beautiful house yard, very nice rock and green of plants and blue water
This has to be one of the best, most concise videos on formative pruning and scaffolding development on figs. Excellent, well done 👍 👏
I'm glad you like it! Just a starting point to do whatever you want.
This has to be one of the best, most concise videos on formative pruning and scaffolding development on figs. Excellent, well done 👍 👏
Water rooting or just using paper towels works pretty well, though. Fact is, figs root easily. There are lots of ways to do it. No need to overcomplicate the issue. Direct potting or rooting in water/sand/paper towels and then potting are probably the best as they avood transplant/up-potting.
when you have cheap or free cuttings, simple is best. Water is the least effective method that I would recommend to someone.
The tree should’ve been repotted a year ago. It’s totally pot bound, obviously
I don't up pot testers until they prove themselves. so you have to deal with this, root prune, or use drip system.
get a larger bucket and soak the the entire ball. leave it in the water for 5 minutes and put the next one in.
Wow, I’m surprised the leaves hasn’t shriveled…which means these fig trees are a lot stronger than I thought.
Ok the here's Johnny was hilarious. I was not expecting that 🤣
16 minutes of this ? you could have said in 2 minutes
How much you sale for both.Rooted cuttings
Not doing too well in Washington state too much rain,my small fig doing better CHICAGO HARDY!
Question. If a cutting needs to form a callus as a precurser to root development, why make a completely new cut on the bottom if it is already healed over? Thanks
I don't know the "scientific" reason, but a fresh cut works. you can also do a small scrap 1/2-1/4" downward toward the bottom. That encourages rooting in that spot.
@thenotoriousfig Awesome. I will recut this batch & thanks
Great video, lots of gems other folks don't cover. Thanks!
I’m trying a close approximation of this method this year for 10 cuttings. It’s so hard not to add more water…
@@BetterwMeador gotta resist 😂
Now you are norious fig hmm not notorious anymore
I just got bit by the fig bug and have acquired quite a few trees in a short amount of time. I plan on keeping most in pots, but putting some in ground. Do you have any advice for being in zone 6a?
Great looking beautiful fig, God bless it and you my friend!
Anyone know what chance of it coming out with rimada phenotype?
Any tastier one? And so no white Madeira or Celeste produce any pollen so these are needed for pollinating figs?
Do you have this happen we’re cuttings leaf out without roots and how to have them root first?
Why not pull bag over cutting? Would only have to dip cutting tip in wax. Save some duckies on tape and not restrict the buds. It's what I do and has the benefit of keeping fungus gnats out.
Enjoyed the video by the way!
That might work but if buds grow into high humidity environment (in the bag) then you need to acclimate later.
When I see roots, I open bag slowly over a few days. I actually prefer force-budding in humidity. Some take forever to bud. I think you mentioned, or alluded to, roots and shoots balance. I'm trying to fine tune it. I enjoy the process. It took me a year to figure out how to grow micros great in hydro.
@@C3Voyagedo you mean grow sprouts in hydroponic system? Do you have videos
How do you know when they need more water?
You can fill anytime, and you'll see water come out of the weeping hole when it's full. Then tip the pot a bit and feel the weight. Then compare to two days later and so on. you'll get a feel for when it needs to be topped off.
Hi i followed your guide last year, they all died the bark rotted, I squeezed out as much water as i could. I think the issue for me is I used just normal potting mix, I can't get Promix here in Australia. Ill try again using method 2 and your 1 to 5 mix.
@@michaelharmony6666 you can try peat moss, perlite and add mychoriza to it.
@thenotoriousfig thankyou ill give you suggestion a go.
@thenotoriousfig any suggestions on ratios?
Also known as tromboncino squash.
The best! Steam one and puree with a bit of butter and salt- yum! I like growing a couple plants around the periphery of my compost pile so they get the nutrients that leach out. One plant will produce a few vines up to 20 feet long.
Nice. Care to share your g’house plans?
Leave it as is Water it, anyways ants don’t hurt the plant
Thug life
So what do you do after year three?
I am trying this tonight with 10 different cuttings (different varieties and sources). I am following the video exactly. I bought all the same materials. I'm excited to see what happens. Thanks for the video.
Best of luck! I'm sure you'll be successful!
Reporting back. Had 90 percent success rate and might still reach 100 percent. Just started 25 more the same way.
@@FirstofTheMagis those are good numbers, especially considering different sources etc. Way to go!
What are your top opinion most beautiful figs that also taste good-great? Figs whether they need pollen to produce or not?
Black Madiera is hard to top. Black Manzanita and Angelito too. I haven't had many caprified figs yet. I will this next season.
Try adding a surfactant like dish soap when trying to rehydrate hydrophobic media. Or use something that isn’t soap…the key is the surfactant.
Thanks for all these postings - I'm learning a lot. I am preparing for spring rooting from cuttings using your method in tree pots. My question is once successfully growing is it best to up pot into a 5 gallon or could I go right into a 7 or 10 if that is my desired end pot?
From treepot, if it's well rooted (roots filling the container, out the bottom), you can go to your 7 or 10ga without issues.
Also when do you water your cuttings after they have leaves? I have also watched videos on this and I am still second guessing myself. I feel it’s still trial and error at this point in my figtabulous adventure. Second guessing gets me everytime.
You can go by weight. either weigh or by lifting and feeling it. They are heaviest when first set up. The leaves will begin to suck out moisture from roots. I bottom water. that's critical. it draws the roots down. Just an 1/8" and let the pots soak it up. and increase as needed. The pots should soak that up right away. and not get super heavy.
@ awesome thank you sir! I’m not too far away from you. Syracuse Indiana. I am just starting my fig adventure and we will see what the future holds
I just started rooting cuttings this year and I have had success with Chicago hardy, but I lost all my desert king. My white Adriatic is holding on, but I fear they may meet their demise…I think I had them too wet. I just bought all the components to do it this way from watching your video as well as Ross’s video. I am going to make sure I wring out the soil just like you did and see if that helps. I also am battling with fungus gnats…yay. I have 80 houseplants including lemon trees. BTI HERE I COME!
These don’t mature enough to fruit do they? What do you do with these at the end of the season? Do you “overwinter” them?
I don't recall if you said when to remove the stretch wrap from the top portion of the cutting that's above ground?
keep on until the buds grow through it. actually, you can keep on until you up pot to a 5 gallon
What is the wattage per foot?
Black Celeste is next on my list. My fig collection is currently ten varieties with cuttings for 4 more varieties coming.
I love the tags I purchased from him
“Big nasty bush”? We’re not in the 80s
alright 👍
Great video with some good tips. Wish I had done some of this last year which was my first growing figs. I'm on the right track though and will prune them down to 30" this winter when they go dormant. I really like those branch spreaders. Thanks for sharing link to those as well as this video.
What is your temperature range in the greenhouse? Do you wait for the trees to go fully dormant before putting them in this greenhouse?
It can be anywhere above 32F. Usually by mid November in Cincinnati
Good information, painful to watch. This video could have been 5 minutes instead of 25.
Can I grow these in ground zone 8b after 2-3 years of development and shaping?
I've put fig trees in ground their first year if I can get them in by spring
I’ve been checking my cuttings and one looks like it has black mold growing just below the soil level. Should I start over? It’s been 3 weeks. What is the reason you put them in a plastic bin.?
just so they prop each other up and can move them around and they also don't tip over
Haha, I like that! 😄👍
