- (SEE TABLE OF CONTENTS BELOW) This video is the third video in my gardening series on how to fertilize fig trees for maximum fruit set, overall health and vigor. This video focuses on the fruiting phase of the fig tree and teaches you how to grow more figs than ever before.
Part 1 of this series focused on how to help fig trees wake up from dormancy and put on leaves and new green growth as quickly as possible. Part 2 focused on how to fertilize figs in the mid-season, which is the time after the fruit tree has broken dormancy and put on its first sets of mature leaves, but before the tree starts growing baby figs.
This video discusses:
1. The importance of phosphorous in fertilizer for fig trees.
2. How and when to transition your fertilizer routine to a high phosphorus regimen and maximize fruit production.
3. How to apply the fertilizers to your and how often they should be applied.
This covers both growing fig trees in ground and fig trees in containers.

Thank you so much for your clear and coherent explanation of how to use the slow release and the water soluble fertilizers. I’ve never had anyone break it down so well and make it entirely comprehensible. I’m sure my plants thank you as well.
I could listen to you say, “Figlet” all day long 😂
Your videos are super. So thorough and clear, without the ramblings of most other plant videos.
I'm glad you're enjoying them. Thanks for watching!
I have you to thank for my figlets!! Mine just came in a few weeks ago, late June or early early July. Thanks to your videos I have a beautifully formed tree, and now fruit for the first time. Thank you so much!!
This is such a great and important video. Thank you for sharing. I've known the basics of fertilizing for a long time, but you are teaching and getting me to go read up on the more specific details. I hope that for years to come I'll have much better fruiting because of you thank you so much
You are a " total wonder teacher"!!!!!!!!!! The best ever!!!!!!!
I have been watching and re-watching your videos and wtiring everything down. You speak clearly and at a great pace.
I have done everything wrong with my figs (2 years) and now I am excited at the prospect of having a load of figs ( from cuttings of unamed varieties) here in Perth Australia.
Can hardly contain my excitement. And look forward to later buying named varieties. CHEERS to you Squire.
Thank you for breaking down fertilizers the way you did here. You've demystified it for me!
Glad to help. Thanks for watching!
I watched all 4 of your videos and really appreciate your educational content.
Thanks again MG!! I fertilized today. I have a very young cutting in a pot, in addition to my in ground fig. You are a huge help!!
Best breakdown and explanation of fertilizers - EVER. Thank you. This was so helpful. Fertlilizing has been the most confusing part of my gardening. I have 21 fruit trees/bushes in my suburban backyard. Nectarine tree set a bunch of fruit but they all fell off. Fig tree had 1 fig that is now gone. I have just felt so lost on how to get everything to fruit.
Mine were loaded and most fell off. I too am discouraged
This video is Excellent. I come here every year to get a refresher. Also, I wanted to say that since I used your Miracle-Gro schedule that you had in another video, my fig production went from just handfuls to buckets full. Thanks
I love hearing reports like this. Knowing these videos are making a difference is just awesome. Glad to hear you're seeing results. Keep in mind you can extrapolate this to other fruiting trees and vegetables that are "heavy feeders": tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc. Fertilizers that promote blooming can really make a big difference.
Definitely going to give this a try this year...like tomorrow🙂
That is good news. I have two NC fig trees and I am gonna try the Miracle-Gro schedule based on your comment. Historically I used 10-10-10 twice per year.
Perfect timing with the release of this video. Thanks
Thanks for watching. I tried to time it right for most
I am so thankful I’ve found your channel.

Thanks for watching! I appreciate it.
Very detailed and informative. Thank you!
I’m gonna start calling my kids little figlets when they don’t listen
Thanks for this. I learned more important info in the first 5 minutes of your video than I have watching and reading hours of other stuff.
I'm glad to hear that! I appreciate you watching.
Excellent explanation. Thank you for sharing.brilliant.
Have not ever had such a great presentation thank you
Thanks for watching!
Nice right? direct and to the point.
I kept my potted fig in an unheated shed this year. So far so good, seeing signs of early growth. Thanks for the fertilizing tips hoping for fruit this year.
Best of luck! Thank you for watching.
That was very informative and helpful! Thank you!
Excellent work on this video! Very detailed and concise.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent video! Thanks very much!!
appreciate your succinct instructions, and that you don't go off topic !
great content, thank you.
I appreciate that! Thank you for watching!
Green Figs are my favorite. Thanks for the input. I guess I have been feeding my trees the correct way by my own. Just like you said, I did already and by you explaining how too makes me fill good now. Thank you so much.
There are literally thousands of figs. Green figs with red, yellow and purple interiors, purple skinned figs with yellow, red and purple interiors, black figs with...well, you get the point. I’m sure there are plenty of red, black and purple skinned varieties you’d love as well. Nurseries sell the same 10-20 common varieties. I suggest looking at FigBid for unique varieties, and going to figaholics.com and reading Harvey’s descriptions for fig varieties that sound interesting. He has hundreds listed. There are so many amazing types.
@@TheMillennialGardener I wanted to know if you do sell fig cuttings

Beautiful information. I have my 10 year old fig tree every year during the month of May and June it is full of very sweet and delicious fruits, every morning I have to pluck out the big ripe fruits. I take these without any spray or fertiliser, I only provide watering during the summer. That's all. Thanks for sharing this beautiful vlog.

The problem for us Karen......is WA doesnt like phosphorous for some reason....they dont let anything high in Phosphorous into WA.
@@jonathancox9501 phosphorus was banned a long time a go , it was used as fertilizer in the wheatbelt and it did a lot of damage to the soils from what I remember as my Dad was a farmer for 30 odd years

I’ve always used 5-10-15 like many use for vegetables and have had pretty good results. I live in South Georgia. I usually use in March, July and a little less around the middle of August before they go dormant so it gets dissolved during the winter months and helps boost in the spring.
You did an excellent presentation

Just started growing 2 small fig plants (chicago hardy) , in Cincinnati OH, taking good care of them, hoping they will grow healthy and fruitful ... Thank you for the valuable info in these series of videos !!
My fig tree is 2.5 years and haven't any figlet grown.
I fertiliser my tree once a month.
Tree is MashahAllah very healthy and straight and lots of leaves.
i have 7 different types of figs and 10 trees all in ground - i notice that my brown turkeys fig out very early and the others are almost 2 months behind...i will try the bone meal treatment as i usually make a 10-10-10 with extra bonemeal
Another informative video!
I'm in zone 9b and water my container figs twice a week now. One of those watering days usually coincides with a fertilizing day. I thought it was problematic to fertilize drier roots so I typically give the container one half gallon of plain water first then one half gallon of the WSF mixture. Am I doing this incorrectly?
Thank you for your extremely helpful videos😎🌵
خیلی خوبه متشکر
Thanks so much. I learn a lot from you with this clip. . I have two fig trees. Steong , healthy . The 2 years old one has grown very well, but produces just a few figs. Is it too late to fertilize it?
Always used to think of the NPK numbers as....Up....Down and All Around. Made it easier for customers to remember it.
They really do have remarkably different effects. If you want to be simple about it, just get a balanced fertilizer, like an organic 5-5-5 and a soluble 20-20-20. However, if you want to optimize, understanding the numbers really helps. It can make a difference.
@@TheMillennialGardener Can't be any simpler than 1st number is for upper growth and such....the second number is for the down growth, roots and such and the 3rd number is for all around health. They can decide what they may have a deficiency in and how to correct it. Not perfect, but it helps.
I bought 3 news trees from a nursery in Georgia. Supposed to be 2-3 foot trees. They arrived as sticks with roots. I planted them immediately. Two now have a tiny bit of green popping out, but the third has nothing. I looked on their site and they say not to fertilize for a year. I just don't understand why they recommend that. Any ideas? I did fertilize them according to your regime. I didn't realize they said not to fertilize until I went searching their site for their guarantee. It was really hidden. My other two trees I already had are doing amazing! Lots of figlets! I've been fertilizing based on your schedule since I took them out of the garage and repotted them into bigger pots. Thanks for the great videos! I refer lots of people to your channel!
Great video as always, love your fig series videos - got the fig bug like you, so drilling, planting and hoping!
Question: could you use the same fertilization on other trees - particularly interested in using it on Guavas, Bananas, Barbados cherry, white sapote and mulberries
Thank you
Thank you for the information. The containers needs big holes?
Thank you for the information in the video.
I see your playlist for citrus and tomatoes.
Is there a specific/different way to fertilize young (2-3 yrs) avocado trees, blueberries, pomegranate trees?
Can I use same way as figs to fertilize the above.
Thanks in advance for your response.
This is such an under-rated video, this should be made mandatory for anyone who ever buys any off-the-shelf fertilizer for any fruit, vegetables, or flowers.

Hi great video as usual. I am in Phoenix AZ and I have a problem with an in ground black mission 5 year old fig tree, the leaves are turning yellow and falling 50% of the tree so far. Is this a sign of over watering or under watering in your opinion? Thanks in advance.
Best gardening channel by Miles,as a newbie i often struugle keeping up but the way you explain makes it so so easy.
Can both fertiliser be applied on the same tree?
Thank you! I'm glad to hear that. Fig trees, especially in containers, benefit from both soluble fertilizers and granulated organic fertilizers. Soluble fertilizer is mandatory when growing fig trees in containers, but not necessarily required for fig trees planted in ground. Both should be supplemented with organic fertilizers. If you want to be lazy, you can just fertilize them with a 20-20-20 soluble and a 5-5-5 organic (or numbers that are very similar). I prefer changing the regimen per season, but that will be more complicated and require an understanding of the NPK ratios. If you want to fertilize based on the season, I have instructions in this playlist based on the time of year: ua-cam.com/play/PL1gY7BoYBGIFNbJEUdApbh_E57uNBLG2j.html
You are a LEGEND
Eureka! The NPK numbers that have previously been a mystery to me now make sense. The number sequence follows the growth of the plants. N for early growth, P for continuing overall development, and finally K for the fruiting phase. Thank you for explaining that so concisely 😃 Great video!
thats not true
Very clear explanation thank you. Here's my fig problem... moved into an established house 4 years ago (South West area of Australia) with a big old fig tree with fruit forming every season...2 crops actually, BUT the fruit never ripens and fall off still hard. I have pruned it down by removing very tall & crossing branches. Laid down Lucerne hay topped with aged sheep & chicken poo, then wood shavings mulch. Winter here is our wet season so all this has been well watered in, ready for spring growth. Should I add more fertilizer with 'P' when the new leaves start forming... and any other tips to get this old tree to give us some edible fruit? Many thanks
You are my go to for growing figs and veggies. Question - Should bloom booster be added to established fig trees when they start to form figlets??
We used horse manure when we planted our fig trees, they are doing amazing.
Did you apply the horse manure inside the soil mix with the bare roots or did you just sprinkle on the surface of the ground around the tree after planting?
U could put the plant in front of the television for a couple weeks for a free dose of Horse Manure! LOL!
Thank you! I have learned so much from you in such a short time. The fertilizing stuff I never understood and everyone seems to make it so complicated but you explain things in such a simple concise way. Now I feel confident to go out and fertilize myfig and citrus trees! Shalom!!😄
Your videos are uniformly excellent, thank you. We live in Florida so all fig trees need to remain in pots, not able to plant them in the ground due to root knot nematodes. Please advise what is the largest size pot you would recommend? If we want full growth large trees, would we not want the largest size pot available?
Just found your great video! I was asking myself how we would iterate this schedule for cultivars that we expect especially or only Brebas from? Like Desert King and others? Would you fertilize differently? Cheers, Alex

What do I do with a fig tree planted in a container in winter time and cold weather specially I’m from NJ?
Look forward to hearing from you
Thx

I planted a ~2 year old tree over a month ago. It's been growing nicely (the main branch has grown 6 inches since planting). I didn't add any fertilizer, just tree soil and some soil that I dug for the hole topped with mulch. Should I provide some nitrogen rich fertilizer?
I live in central TX so it's pretty hot right now.
I’m really enjoying your videos. I have some fig trees that are about two years old in containers 5 gallon containers and I’m going to Up Ruth him how do I go about fertilizing them or do I even fertilizing at this point
Could I use an 18-24-16 on my carrots, potatoes tomatoes figs beets while they are producing flowers/fruits? Thanks you're a very good teacher...
awesome info. Got my calendar filled out. Question about the epsom salts .You only use Epsom salts in the 2-3 early season feedings , none in mid season, and then again in every 2-3 fruiting cycle feedings and thats it? Also, you use 1 Tbsp of bone meal in every single feeding till the very end of the growing season? Important to know. Thankyou
Thanks for another great video! I have 10 fig trees in the "do it right" blue containers, but they are young, some I rooted over the winter and so far the weather here in Jersey is not too hot and the soil doesn't dry up and it stays moist for 7 to 10 days, should I still fertilize every 7 to 10 days no plain water in between? Thanks again!
Yes, you want to fertilize every 10-14 days. Every 7 days is too often. 10 would be as often as you want to unless you live in such a rainy climate, they wash out constantly. If they dry out, obviously add plain old water, but if they're staying moist, you don't need to water. As the weather warms up, you'll need to water more often.
I have a young tree, and I was looking for something about frost damage, as my young one came out of dormancy and then we had a cold snap.
However, this was very well thought out, and I'll see your other videos.
I have just received my first fig tree I live in a cement unit so a lot is all I have to have a healthy root system what size pot do you feel will still produce fruit thanks for listening
