The reason why the marshmallow look isn't something she's recommending is because it's already super popular and when someone sees it, they're likely to think of another popular UA-camr instead. But she never said it's bad and she isn't casting people out for using that style. Oh, you draw more realistically? Alright, that's great! If that's what you're comfortable with, then go ahead and use that. She never said realistic is bad either, just that for most people, simpler designs are more efficient to draw when you have to draw the same thing over and over again. And simpler doesn't mean totally cartoony or her style. She's not. Forcing anyone. How you draw is still valid. These are just general tips that still are helpful and apply to many artists. LavenderTowne also points out some really good advice! I think that the 50% your personality can really help the drawing and show viewers what kind of person you are. My selfsona is a plant, already quite memorable since Plantsonas are EXTREMELY RARE! And it's even more unique because it's a special type of plantsona that I made called a Parasitic-Plantsona, a closed species of people in plant skins that can possess people who they share a sort of spiritual connection from an accidental first possession. So I already have one but it's still a very good video as always!
My selfsona is a ball. Although there are two versions, one is me and the other one is a full-fledged country with history! However that one can't even speak English properly and will speak broken English with a mix of other languages.

i learned that with character design, another cool tip is to make the character all black like a silouhette (i hope i spelt it right) and see if you can distinguish that character just by their silouhette which can help if you want the character be more memorable :D (also if you're wondering i did take this from BaM Animation's video lol, they got some really helpful tips when it comes to character design)

KaitlinDoesArts A lot of story time animators do have actual movement in their videos, like Domics and Jaiden, and even James has some parts of his animations, or whatever you want to call them, that are giving the illusion of movement. But yeah a majority of story time animators don’t actual animate.
Here’s some bullet points from the video for those of you who want it! - don’t make it too simple or too detailed. Find middle ground. - try making a little chart of proportions of your character, emotions, etc. to use as the “rules” - make a “uniform” that you will mostly have on your selfsona. Don’t make it specific to a season and try to make it look like your style. And those are the basic things that you will want to take with you from the video!

My "Selfsona" is literally a chicken ;_; ( happy go lucky ) I created it a while ago ( one year ) and although it's not really me...it's cute don't judge pls. Over time I also added a bunny ( sad, neutral ) and a cat ( strict, stiff and lecturing ) to express more character traits.

I feel like in the thumbnail you should rather have put the super simple style in “Not That”, because the detailed one being there may cause a misunderstanding, especially since there are good detailed animations out there and sometimes detailed animation comes off nice especially depending on topics and a person’s personality and themes. Because there are animated shows and movies that go more for the realistic like style, as they are a bit more serious, require that style for the narrative and go along well with what happens, like “The Killing Joke” movie or the animated series of “John Constantine” that is coming out, there are people who quite enjoy seeing detailed animation when done good. And either way a reference sheet is usually very recommended in animation with characters. Whether this characters are simplistic or detailed.
Um you guys do realize that this is part of a series she made quite a while back called do this not that, so she can't exactly change the thumbnail to fit this video without putting it in another category I'm guessing

Do whatever you want! While it's harder to animate something that's in a realistic style, many artists have done stunning animations in a more realistic style.
She’s not dunking on The Odd Ones Out. She’s just taking about how it doesn’t show you and you’ll be called a copy cat or something like that. Lots of popular Animators have made their self-sona more detailed and distinct and even the Odd Ones Out uses really expressive animation to make up for his extremely simple design.
My older art style wasn’t developed majorly during my younger years and I decided to take a bit of a risk and change it completely (exaggerating the proportions, etc). I find this video very helpful!
Even though you guys might think shes throwing shade at TheOdd1sOut, either way, he has a VERY recognizable style and ways he draws his oc. (Hes one of the main creators of that style). It doesn't necessarily matter if shes throwing shade at your favorite youtuber
Sets of expressions for a character (commonly a persona) are mostly called sprites or sets of sprites! Just thought I'd say that because you seemed to not know what to call them. Much love lol

What I love to to do is get one of those emotion ych charts and just kinda use them as a reference for all the different emotions I might need, so I have a good variety and they don't all look the same

Wow there's a lot of screaming in this comment section. Oof It's just tips, my dudes. It's not that you can't be expressive in the 2nd style, it's just that it takes a lot more effort to draw over and over again. So if you're going to use that persona for a lot of things, you might want to simplify it and make it easier on yourself. She isn't forcing your hand to stop drawing like that~ It feels like many people are treating this like a personal attack xD
My selfsona is a cat named Misty, whom I put simple light colors on her, like gray and white, but also some accessories on her so it can't be too simple. This video was very helpful for me to improve my selfsona!

Bingsoo she legit said in the video that there’s nothing inherently wrong with that but so many people are using it now (originally the Odd1sout, and later people copying him) that it doesn’t set you apart at all.

I got clip studio paint and will be drawing my selfsona very soon. I don’t plan to use it for videos so the lineweight thing doesn’t apply to me but everything else is pretty much spot on.
Drawing yourself over and over is a really great way to come to terms with your own apperance, and learn to embrace parts of yourself that you don't like. With a cartoon version of yourself you can either remove aspects of your looks that you dislike, or you can exaggerate them in a fun way. I love drawing myself because it helps me to be more comfortable with the way I look, and even makes me feel GOOD about it. Due to various health problems that prevent proper exercise, I'm fairly overweight, so I get to draw myself using big adorable circles. I'm really short, which is adorable in a cartoon but hard to cope with in real life. I've been bullied because of my red hair, but art has taught me how damn gorgeous my hair is. Art has taught me that my weird pale worm body is beautiful and important. But best of all is that as a genderfluid person, I can draw my cartoony self as androgynous, and that helps so much with disphoria.

I like to think that my selfsona is pretty good. She's not a blob, and she's not too detailed either. I think that she's pretty fun to draw, even in different art styles. When it comes to clothes, I usually just do a tank top and short shorts, which is what I normally wear. I tend to make different poses and stuff. I'm not much of an animator, but I always try my best. And I don't do hair dyed in real life or drawn form, 'cause I don't like hair dye.
A thing I like to do if you want to make coloured hair (pink blue) look realistic just tint it , go for a really deep blue or dip dye the ends. This again is just a thing I like to do
I really like the idea of having the body and head separate so that you can mix and match expressions and poses. Seems simple and obvious, but I wouldn't have thought of it.

If you are having trouble keeping your hair color consistent here is the tip. You can just mix some direct acting hair dye (la riche directions or wunderbar for example) with your shampoo and use it as your regular shampoo (maybe keep it on your hair just 2-5 min for more pigmented result) . But make sure the color of hair dye you are using is way more pigmented than your desired color. For example if you are going for a pastel pink you should get something like carnation pink, for pastel blue some ultramarine, etc. I'm using this technique for almost a year now and it saved me sooooo much time. I can't even remember the last time dying my hair (except for the bleaching)
Initially somethingelseyt was also pretty similar with the odd1sout but im glad to see that he was later on able to find the direction he wanted to go with and made the art stand out in its own way especially with his usage of warm colors like the reddish brown lineart :)
Can I give my Selfsonas plot tho? It’s always been a terrible habit of mine to talk to myself and pretend to be characters from shows I like as a do this acting out how I’d interact with them(typically me being a inter dimensional creature who can manipulate anything in their world as long as canon isn’t invented so I guess I came up with canon events before watching Spider-Man across the spider verse lol) So in response I want to make my selfsona a shapeshifting demonic creature who has made a deal with actual me so they have power over my OC’s and what happens to them. This would be a fun way to have an excuse to make my characters interact with my selfsona in ways that are similar to how a roleplay with myself constantly!

Super Waffle Yoshi oh I’m sorry if you misunderstood, I didn’t meant change the concept of the series, rather change the picture in the “Not That” side from the detailed character to the white blob odd1'sout looking character she drew at the start (the super simple one), as having the detailed one might cause some misunderstandings, since there are quite nice and and super detailed characters in animations which some people really appreciate, such as super hero shows or movies, etc. I didn’t meant that to completely change the concept of “Do This Not That” That this series is centered around.

She’s not dunking on The Odd Ones Out. She’s just taking about how it doesn’t show you and you’ll be called a copy cat or something like that. Lots of popular Animators have made their self-sona more detailed and distinct and even the Odd Ones Out uses really expressive animation to make up for his extremely simple design.
My older art style wasn’t developed majorly during my younger years and I decided to take a bit of a risk and change it completely (exaggerating the proportions, etc). I find this video very helpful!

Sets of expressions for a character (commonly a persona) are mostly called sprites or sets of sprites! Just thought I'd say that because you seemed to not know what to call them. Much love lol

What I love to to do is get one of those emotion ych charts and just kinda use them as a reference for all the different emotions I might need, so I have a good variety and they don't all look the same

It's not that you can't be expressive in the 2nd style, it's just that it takes a lot more effort to draw over and over again. So if you're going to use that persona for a lot of things, you might want to simplify it and make it easier on yourself. She isn't forcing your hand to stop drawing like that~

My selfsona is a cat named Misty, whom I put simple light colors on her, like gray and white, but also some accessories on her so it can't be too simple.

Bingsoo she legit said in the video that there’s nothing inherently wrong with that but so many people are using it now (originally the Odd1sout, and later people copying him) that it doesn’t set you apart at all.

Drawing yourself over and over is a really great way to come to terms with your own apperance, and learn to embrace parts of yourself that you don't like. With a cartoon version of yourself you can either remove aspects of your looks that you dislike, or you can exaggerate them in a fun way.
I love drawing myself because it helps me to be more comfortable with the way I look, and even makes me feel GOOD about it. Due to various health problems that prevent proper exercise, I'm fairly overweight, so I get to draw myself using big adorable circles. I'm really short, which is adorable in a cartoon but hard to cope with in real life. I've been bullied because of my red hair, but art has taught me how damn gorgeous my hair is. Art has taught me that my weird pale worm body is beautiful and important.
But best of all is that as a genderfluid person, I can draw my cartoony self as androgynous, and that helps so much with disphoria.

I like to think that my selfsona is pretty good. She's not a blob, and she's not too detailed either. I think that she's pretty fun to draw, even in different art styles. When it comes to clothes, I usually just do a tank top and short shorts, which is what I normally wear. I tend to make different poses and stuff. I'm not much of an animator, but I always try my best. And I don't do hair dyed in real life or drawn form, 'cause I don't like hair dye.

A thing I like to do if you want to make coloured hair (pink blue) look realistic just tint it , go for a really deep blue or dip dye the ends. This again is just a thing I like to do

If you are having trouble keeping your hair color consistent here is the tip. You can just mix some direct acting hair dye (la riche directions or wunderbar for example) with your shampoo and use it as your regular shampoo (maybe keep it on your hair just 2-5 min for more pigmented result) . But make sure the color of hair dye you are using is way more pigmented than your desired color. For example if you are going for a pastel pink you should get something like carnation pink, for pastel blue some ultramarine, etc.
I'm using this technique for almost a year now and it saved me sooooo much time. I can't even remember the last time dying my hair (except for the bleaching)

Initially somethingelseyt was also pretty similar with the odd1sout but im glad to see that he was later on able to find the direction he wanted to go with and made the art stand out in its own way especially with his usage of warm colors like the reddish brown lineart :)

It’s always been a terrible habit of mine to talk to myself and pretend to be characters from shows I like as a do this acting out how I’d interact with them(typically me being a inter dimensional creature who can manipulate anything in their world as long as canon isn’t invented so I guess I came up with canon events before watching Spider-Man across the spider verse lol)
So in response I want to make my selfsona a shapeshifting demonic creature who has made a deal with actual me so they have power over my OC’s and what happens to them.
This would be a fun way to have an excuse to make my characters interact with my selfsona in ways that are similar to how a roleplay with myself constantly!
And thus Lavendertownes famous persona was born

With the second photo here 2:02 I actually find this character very appealing. In my opinion tons of freckles is SO adorable. Although, I see it more as an OC not a selfsona.
