@@domino-dude honestly I agree with that statement. She's just an otherworldly being that we come to for art advice, with our pathetic little doodles 😔

@@nuclearseahorse It's when people talk to each other in theater, but they don't really face towards each other and instead kind of talk in a weird 3/4 angle- otherwise, the audience would see the sides of their head. Which isn't particularly interesting.
Something to be mindful of with the last tip she gave is that, as long as you don’t spend hours on your sketches, they can be a pretty accurate representation of how dynamic the art will be. If you make a sketch and are really happy with it, but by the time you’ve finished the drawing you’re not a fan, it’s likely because of what she mentioned last in the video. This is another reason to do quick thumbnails before jumping into a drawing.
this made me realize that almost all of my art in the past year has been a pinup of sorts, just a nice picture of a nice looking person posing nicely, and while that kind of art IS great, i realize i dont really want to make JUST pinups of my characters, and this video is probably going to help me with coming up with illustrations that feel more like candid photographs than well-produced photoshoots!
A thing I do to see what stands out is unfocus my eyes. This helps me find the point I’m more likely to look at like a really saturated color or a light in a certain area
at 10:34 this reminds me of what my mom always says "walk away from ugly". Meaning if your not liking your art you should walk away and come back to it later, sometimes you just need a quick break to recharge your brain.
I must say, i am SO curious to see what story these characters are a part of!! The girl with what i assume to be vitiligo is especially interesting to me, if shes the same character you worked on in your in depth character design video from ages ago shes evolved a LOT and im so curious about her!!
WOW LAVENDERTOWNES ART IS JUST SO SHOCKINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND THIS VIDEO WAS SO HELPFUL I ALWAYS STRUGGLE WITH MY CHARACTERS POSING AND STUFF AND THIS HELPED ALOT!
Tbh I was playing around with an au for a show I like, and then came up with this really cool comic idea for an au based off of one. And I imagined it in this really pretty, semi realistic, semi anime style. And then when I started drawing it, I was sooo disappointed because the art looked nothing like how I wanted it to. But I think with this advice, I’m going to try to study some poses so I can make some really nice scenes, like one where the siren character is in a net inside of a room, and one of the side characters walks in, after the siren begs to see the main character, and the side character has to tell them something important which makes the siren go from hopeful to upset. It’s a difficult pose and certainly hard expressions, but with your advice, I think I’m gonna try to sketch out the poses first and then go from there. Thanks LavenderTowne!
Makes a lot of sense really and by doing this you get a sense of the characters personalities rather than a cardboard cutout that I always do because I suck at posing.

I agree with all of your points here. As a growing artist that has faced countless art blocks and frustrations with my art, my best advice is to just be free and have fun. Yes, to grow as an artist it’s necessary to do all the “boring” stuff like anatomy practice and making sure your proportions are right, but also it’s nice to let loose every so often and take the pressure to create perfect art pieces off your shoulders. Make “bad” and messy sketches that you won’t finish, draw crack art of your characters doing dumb stuff, draw things you see out in your daily life, redesign characters for no reason, draw lazy doodles of something you enjoy. Don’t forget art is also about having fun. If you’re bored with your art then change your perspective and what you’re drawing/focusing on with your art and maybe it can help! As lavandertowne said, you are the god of your illustration.
i've been a veiwer for a long time but this is the first time I've commented; something that's been fun to see over the years is your style ever so slightly changing. Obviously you still have your trademarks, but its cool seeing the gradual improvement! One thing that sticks out to me in the dynamic example piece, though, is the way you stylised the feet/lower legs. When compared to the arms and hands, they have a significantly different level of abstraction, which makes them feel a bit out of place.

Thank you! This really helped me, as I usually just draw my characters in their own individual drawings, and there aren't a lot of drawings I have that have the characters interacting.
The main issue I have with my art is me being too scared to draw the character without thinking that I'm going to make them look bad. I've given myself a habit of forcing myself to "get the drawing perfect the first time or else it absolutely sucks", and the worst part is that I draw on my phone and use my finger, so I'm hella shaky, so I always end up with very rough lines, and I find it annoying so I just trash the project all together. I don't know how to break this habit, but I would love to finally be confident in my art for once

"Is anything in this scene foreshadowing something that Will happen later" "What can be understood about the characters traits and dynamics in this scene?" I think that my struggle with this comes down to a different issue, with how I’m terrible with creativity. I want to draw. I want to write stories. But I don’t have any ideas for it. something I like doing for ideas is drawing a comic page with no planning, I usually begin by drawing a character ocupying a significant portion of the page, then I just structure panels and dialogue boxes around them to fill the rest of the page, then I continue drawing pages until the scene ends. IMPORTANT: don't write it like it's suposed to be the first page, it's just meant to be part a bigger whole. Then I try writting a bunch of paper about the scene, some examples of questions you can try answering are:
"What are the things this scene is setting up to happen later"
"Does any thing in this scene needs an explanation I could turn into an interesting backstory?"
"Is anything in this scene foreshadowing something that Will happen later"
"What can be understood about the characters traits and dynamics in this scene?"
"Would It be interesting or boring to know how the characters met for the first time?"
"Could anything in this scene have been foreshadowed earlier?"
"Is the word of the story different from ours or is it similar to any fictional world I like?"
Actually there a lot of questions you can ask just by filling in "how would this character react to...", like:
"... seeing their friend cry"
"... getting a million dolars"
"... getting insulted"
"... getting complimented"
"... falling in love"
"... realising they have never fallen in love"
"... admiting they are wrong"
"...getting asked for a date"
"... getting rejected"
"... meeting their idol"
"... Interacting with someone they hate"
"... interacting with someone they love"
"... getting frustratred or dissapointed"
Those little questions will help you have a better idea of who the characters you are creating are, but it's also important to get the obvious out of the way like:
"What is the usual routine for the character?"
"How do they look?"
"How were they raised? How does it affect who they are?"
"What is their age?"
"How do they like dressing? What does it say about them?"
"What are their hobbies?"
"What is the goal they achive in the end of the story?"
If you want to write a story that focuses on character, you also have to know about how character relationships and dynamics works. I am gonna use the first Kung Fu Panda movie as an example, the main character relationship of that movie is between Po and Shifu, their dynamic is teacher and student. I would say that their entire relationship is building to Shifu's realization that Po could become the dragon warrior if he deviated from tradicional teaching methods. For Shifu, the scene is about he discussing with the turtle about peach trees, both scenes have the characters showing their belief that Po could never be the dragon warrior, they paralel each other.
The shift in the dynamic was a moment that happened right before then big realizarion. In the begginig of the movie, Shifu is very reluctant to teach, while Po is excited to learn. As the turtle dies and the villain is getting closer, the dynamic changes and now Po finally admits that Shifu was right about how a flabby Panda could never be the dragon warrior as Shifu presures Po to become the dragon warrior. Then the realization comes, Shifu finally understands what his master has been telling him all movie long and has to teach his lesson to Po, I think it's really beautiful how this realization cause Shifu to act passiently and respectufully to Po, after all, he is now confidant that he will be able to teach Po with this new method.
