I so agree on the "show don't tell". I bought a book filled with x-men comics since I love the movies. I couldn't get through the first story because of all the text. It was so much and so boring. "And then wolverine punched him" no shit, really? What's the point of writing stuff that you can obviously see for yourself in the art? Drives me nuts.
I know you've already done a do this not that for hair but the hair was mostly feminine so I was wondering if you could do a do this not that for male hair. I would be very grateful I want to create a comic but I can only really draw one kind of hair for guys and I don't want all of the guys to have the same hair in different colors.

Making color codes for the characters also helps. For example, one character speaks in pink with black bubbles, one speaks in blue with white bubbles, etc etc. It helps with clarity, especially if the text bubbles are far from the character. Edit: Different bubble colors, text fonts, and adding little faces near the text also help with this problem.

I've noticed that in American comics there will be a panel with a character that has one facial expression but a huge speech bubble with a lot of text and to me that makes the character feel a bit emotionless. In manga on the other hand, whenever there is some kinda break up in the speech like commas, fullstops and etc there is a new panel with a different facial expression so mangas tend to be longer because they are more expressive than American comics. But this is just my opinion.

Hey lavender , I'm working on a comic at the moment the only problem is; i don't know how to start :'0 if you have time could you maybe make a video about starting comics too (i mean story lines or some character tips) i've been drawing comics since i was little but I want to take it more seriously now ..
you can also check out mark crilley on youtube, who has published comics in the past professionally in print, as well as books on how to draw manga. Haley has watched him in the past, and he is the most prominent art channel on the site for his hyperrealistic draw time lapses. he has a lot of tips on not only how to draw, but also how to write and finalize your projects.
Also check out whyt manga. He has explained how to begin a comic. How to kill off characters etc. Basically every basic question. He has a video for. But if you have further questions message me oranyone who is creating a comic and has been for years. They should be of help to you. (Creator of 'chained to ME' on tapas and webtoons)
Louisnzy i struggle with that too most of the time. I usually want a story to get quick to the exiting parts but its important to start slow but inviting. Interesting( in my opinion) is to start the story with the main character and tell a little about their past and their interests but let it cut of with a normal scene like everyday life for the character or the start of a travel somewhere,so that you don't know that much yet. (Hope i helped a little mabey)
I forgot my brother's name the other day, so I started calling him Len for the rest of the day until I remembered. (Kagamine Len is a very annoying charecter from Project Dive. lol)
You've inspired me to finally start drawing a comic I've been wanting to for a while now so thx for the helpful advice (I would need some anyway :P) :)

I know this video was made about half a year ago, but I just wanted to thank you for making it. Using your advice I had made a short comic with some characters I had made, and it turned out way better than I expected it to be because of the dynamic "camera angles". It's still not perfect, but it's better than it would've been if I hadn't seen your video.
[EDIT: Time has changed to 2:00!] Hey guys! If you're going to be in Seattle for Sakura-con, I'm doing a meet up! It's at 2:00 on Saturday in front of the Exhibition Hall! Hope to see some of you there!
LavenderTowne im only 14 and some how im already art blocked ;-; everything i draw is just (to me) REALLY BAD ive watched all your vids on stuff like that and yet i havent found a solution :/ i think its mainly because i cant find my art style... Although one time i drew a scare crow with your ish art style and it was actually not half bad. But when i saw my friends drawing i wanted to burn all my drawings. Please help
Fransisco Xayaphonesongkham The size of the eyes, shape of the head and blush do look similar but other that that it seems to be different so I think it's just inspired by her style?
These are fantastic suggestions. I had no idea I could make my own font! I've always had trouble choosing a font that was readable but still looked good! I'm going to try that out now! I have discovered a fun way to make text bubbles in colored comics! I don't outline them anymore. I assign each character a very light version of their main color and make a shape in that color to be the speech bubble. I saw someone else do it once and I loved the effect. Of course it wouldn't work in BW, though.
I think there’s one good excuse to use 11:20 and that is when a character is having an inner monolouge. And the bubbles obscuring everything else then demonstrates how the character is drifting off into this iner conversation shutting the world out and oblivious to what is happening around them. I know this has nothing to do with the topic, that’s just what looking at your example made me think of :D
For my comics I use color coded watercolor brush backgrounds. I don't draw the full shape, usually just a line going to the speaking character. For kiddos who want to do comic strips/pages, make the panels different sizes and shapes! Or do a drawing that isn't confined to a panel. If you're worried about the using multiple panels to describe the scene, make small expression/pose/shot changes. Move from their face being neutral, to tearing up and looking away from the camera to a shot of their feet/eyes/background.
I'm starting my first comic, and going through a huge learning experience while making it. It's actually such a huge learning experience that my art quality quite noticeably improved between page 1 and the last page. This video helps. It at least gives me some things to keep in mind.
Jairo, the Cow I mean you can watch it if you want, but I've seen Amino promotions everywhere and at this point it's just annoying and in the way of the video
I used to do some comic pages before, but I stopped because there was no movement al all. I'm more focused on improving my drawing flexibility before doing comics seriously. It's still fun to do it anyway, even if looks awful xD
Bangoshy Um exactly?????!?!?!?!??! I hate reading a chill comic and suddenly realizing it's apparently LotR Like stop please no I just came here to have fun not to study a goddamn textbook
This is very helpful last summer I attempted to make a comic and had struggled with the speech bubbles and font. Then motivation just disappeared and I quit but your videos have not only gave me motivating idea, but now I have more to go in depth with the comic to attempt it this summer!
This is kinda perfect Right now I'm currently designing the characters for my comic. These tips were really helpful, and I agreed with them all, especially the last tip. I hate reading textbooks with too man words, as I would rather focus on the art instead of the text.
I just started a comic and published it on webtoon a couple of weeks ago and I feel like I'm learning so much about my program than I did before and this video helped me even more thank you so much! I struggle with word bubbles and backgrounds the most :(
Tru. But it WAS also the same with cuphead. When that came out everyone was like "OH MYVGOSSSHHH HAVE YOU SEEN CUPHEAD BRORROO???!!" its basically the same with every game.
I was looking forward to this one, thank you really much!! I've been watching a lot of tutorials but the mistakes you're pointing out are definitely my worst pet peeves, and your advices are really helpful!
This was very helpful! I'm currently worldbuilding for a comic book that I'm working on for my Thesis as an Illustration MFA, and gods is it difficult! Keep up the videos and art! I'm officially subbed :)
Can you make a video about your ocs like Planchette and stuff? I want to know how you got your inspiration and how you decided to make a web comic about them. I love your comic and your art style! Sincerely, me Please someone tell me if they got the reference
I'm currently writing a fanfic comic (I'm just going to call that ;w;) and tbh, I'm having a blast! Really does force to get out of your comfort zone. It's called The Ink Demon (warning ya now it's Hetalia related). Still want to improve on making comics but other than that, it's kind of fun
I love your art style so much. It's so... Cozy? It just has a kinda warm vibe I can't describe with words. I really like it. Also, even though I have made a sizable amount of unpublished comics, I find this advice very useful. I'm wanting to make a horror graphic novel, and this advice just helps so much. Thx
I used to come up with so many character ideas and eventually decided I wanna make a comic, but have always struggled with words. I never realized it's acceptable to make a comic with minimal words. Thanks to you, I might actually try now! ;0 Probably won't upload, but I'm happy enough about this revelation that I wanted to comment
Well, I mean... This exists. www.xkcd.com/ You don't have to be a stellar artist as long as you have a decent grasp on storytelling and writing mechanics.
I got my start in a tiny notebook making doodles of a mouse in sunglasses. Simple shapes, recognizable, something I can storyboard. From that, I expanded to drawing different animals as well as scenery and backgrounds. Next thing I know, I’m teaching myself to draw in perspective, and fully engaged all the way because I was invested in making my scene look like how it should. One of my milestone pictures was a shot of my mouse-bro standing before a gas station; mouse-bro is a jumble of loose line to denote “poufiness” with a nose and two black rectangle “sunglasses” tacked on; gas station is in high detail with competent one-point perspective. 10/10 priority-keeping skills.
10% of the reason your vids are slowly becoming my go to for tutorials is your soothing voice. I think it helps me cope with comic making! Lmao! I love your vis! ❤️❤️
I just wanted to say that you’ve been one of my biggest inspirations for the past.. 2 years I believe? You’ve helped me as an artist and videos like these really encourage me to work even harder. Thank you💜💜💜
I have a webcomic I've been planning for a few years now, but I haven't started drawing it yet and I don't plan to for a long while. I want to start making mini-comics in the meantime to get a feel for the medium and to develop my art style, and this was really helpful! Thank you!
In ELA class, I got carried away writing a ballad, and it slowly became something of an epic poem, and I’ve really been thinking about putting it into comic form! Honestly, this is really the push I needed to inspire me to do it!
my comic is currently on hiatus because ive been too depressed and stressed to work on it, but ill probably start on it again soon. i still have the next page almost complete and its pretty sketchy, im probably gonna change up the whole way i make the comic because i dont like the formatting its called Breathe Fire & Ice, breathe is going to be the series if i decide to do more [might be visual novel or straight up book idk] its about a cat with the ability to use blue fire, which is unheard of in any other fire elementals. not only that but he has ice powers and he has to balance himself and grow stronger both physically and as a person; all while trying to escape an enemy who wants him dead just because he's a cat, and the cat returns the sentiment kilathekitty.deviantart.com/gallery/63410928/Breathe-Fire-and-Ice
The "perfect" word bubbles you make with a circle tool next to a more sketchy style always reminds me of those like, "fill in the comic" sheets art teachers would give you as kids? Like the ones with a bunch of blank panels with word bubbles, so you can fill them in with your own art and words? So yeah, probably not the thing you want your comic to remind people of.
Thanks! I've really been struggling on my own comic, of which came from a weird dream I had oof. The idea of the art involved was that the background wasn't supposed to be natural. The color changes based on the mood, so the grass isn't always green, sometimes it's pink or yellow. The color can change only from page to page, but sometimes when sudden Anger is there it'll switch to red for a few panels. Im only a little bit through figuring out the whole story of it, and putting it all together, but your videos are super helpful in LOTS of ways for me! They've helped me improve my art, storytelling and more! Keep doing what your doing I hecking love your Channel!
So what’s your opinion on homestuck? The way it’s made I mean, it doesn’t really use text bubbles but it does has a lot of text. And it uses a lot of “camera angles” but that’s my opinion.
Unicorn Burgers i really like homestuck. I like the story and the way it's told. The way it's drawn is weird but that also makes it reconizable. But i get that the lenght of it and the complexity makes it not for everybody.
All of these comic tips are REALLY helpful because I'm actually trying to make a like fan comic or whatever and I've never really done anything like this before so these tips are gonna be life savers

yeah, just be careful not to choose a color that can't be seen... Too bright to read or something like that.

Of course. That applies to colors in general, not just text.
also if the characters arent in view a lot of artists just put small chibi heads to show the character and some emotion

How do you forget your sisters name?
I forgot my brother's name the other day, so I started calling him Len for the rest of the day until I remembered. (Kagamine Len is a very annoying charecter from Project Dive. lol)
I dont even talk to my brothers, and when I forget, I just say hey you, shithead
Diamondz Emeraldz XDDDDD
@@trash.j Lol i just laughed so hard i accidentaly choked on my drink
Very carefully.
You've inspired me to finally start drawing a comic I've been wanting to for a while now so thx for the helpful advice (I would need some anyway :P)
:)
What is the name of your comic?
Yeah what’s the name of it! And how’s it going now? Did you reach your goal? Did you even make it? Are you proud?
@@thescarlethunter2160 Lucid
@@hehehehe6530 The name was "Lucid" it's not public but it turned out pretty good I haven't been working on it for a while though I'd say I'm pretty proud 😊
ThatOneIdiot awe cool! How do I find it? Can you post a link or something?
Edit- I just realised you said it’s not public. Well it sounds cool! Maybe you will release it one day
I know this video was made about half a year ago, but I just wanted to thank you for making it. Using your advice I had made a short comic with some characters I had made, and it turned out way better than I expected it to be because of the dynamic "camera angles". It's still not perfect, but it's better than it would've been if I hadn't seen your video.
Yes! I needed this! I've been wanting to make a comic for a while now and this video really helped!
Pilulu your character looks like maeve
Jarell Fripp what character?
+Pilulu Profile picture :3
"I forgot my sister's name" 😂😂
Could you do a video about the dos and don'ts of forced perspective and foreshortening and the like? I want to try it but I don't know where to begin.
girl: these panels are kinda... boring
guy: NANI!!??
11:27 if you read the second box it's hilarious :3
Only the 2 one
Yes very
I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS COMMENT, THANK YOU FOR EXISTING Because I want someone else to feel the joy of reading such a meta, beautiful dialogue.
YES THANK YOU FOR THE TIME STAMP
Omg xD
[EDIT: Time has changed to 2:00!] Hey guys! If you're going to be in Seattle for Sakura-con, I'm doing a meet up! It's at 2:00 on Saturday in front of the Exhibition Hall! Hope to see some of you there!
LavenderTowne Omg!!!! I *am* going to be there! Do you have a booth number?
LavenderTowne oh nvm I read that you said a Meet up haaa
LavenderTowne I can't believe I missed that! But I suppose I didn't have tickets any way. I hope you had fun and maybe you'll be there again next year
Man, if I would've known I totally would've gone since I don't live that far from Seattle. But I hope you have fun and enjoy Sakura-con and Seattle~
Please help
omg this came in the right time , i was about to give up on my comic lol ty!
09Splash Ball Same here!
Did you make your icon in her style? Because it looks really similar.
Fransisco Xayaphonesongkham The size of the eyes, shape of the head and blush do look similar but other that that it seems to be different so I think it's just inspired by her style?
Heavily heavily inspired
Laura Zubak Yeah probably, I just think it’s cool how it looked so much like hers. I can’t even get close to replicating other’s styles.
"I forgot my sister's name, so I only got to question 2."
I know this has nothing to do with the topic, that’s just what looking at your example made me think of :D
hey
i hope you're having a great day :D
kokohai Thanks :D
Thank you.
Tank you ^^
Thanks you too •3•
kokohai Thanks, i think it's the first time I actually appreciate these kind of comments since i had a horrible day.
i foRGOT MY SISTERS NAME
does anyone actually know their sisters name?
The Egg yeah I mean it's 2018. Sister's are outdated psh
Yeah, brothers are more in style now
Sometimes your mind just pulls a blank or she's just messing with us.
..definitely messing with us😂
it’s a joke..

ME
I'm starting my first comic, and going through a huge learning experience while making it. It's actually such a huge learning experience that my art quality quite noticeably improved between page 1 and the last page. This video helps. It at least gives me some things to keep in mind.

Peeble Kitty thanks :)

Peeble Kitty Promo is important part of the experience.
Jairo, the Cow
I mean you can watch it if you want, but I've seen Amino promotions everywhere and at this point it's just annoying and in the way of the video
I used to do some comic pages before, but I stopped because there was no movement al all.
I'm more focused on improving my drawing flexibility before doing comics seriously. It's still fun to do it anyway, even if looks awful xD
*aggressive clicking on the video* I haven’t watched the entire video but I know it’ll be very helpful, thank you for making a video about this!
I absolutely love your draw this not that series! It's incredibly helpful to listen to while I work on my first comic.
i read a lot of comics and something that really hinders my experience is when the flow of my reading is interupted by TOO MUCH TEXT
Bangoshy Um exactly?????!?!?!?!??!
I hate reading a chill comic and suddenly realizing it's apparently LotR
Like stop please no
I just came here to have fun not to study a goddamn textbook

Bangoshy omg hi don't know if you remember me but I agree. I usually just do a quick scan if it's too long

This is very helpful last summer I attempted to make a comic and had struggled with the speech bubbles and font. Then motivation just disappeared and I quit but your videos have not only gave me motivating idea, but now I have more to go in depth with the comic to attempt it this summer!
You should do a 'do this not that' body types edition!
She actually did!!^^
Yes! I always wanted to do comics, and you're one of the people who got me interested in making them. Thank you !
This is kinda perfect
Right now I'm currently designing the characters for my comic.
These tips were really helpful, and I agreed with them all, especially the last tip.
I hate reading textbooks with too man words, as I would rather focus on the art instead of the text.
Comics are easy!
Just copy what homestuck does and make one panel.

I’ve been wanting to make a comic for a while and this stuff is rlly helpful ❤️❤️
I just started a comic and published it on webtoon a couple of weeks ago and I feel like I'm learning so much about my program than I did before and this video helped me even more thank you so much!
I struggle with word bubbles and backgrounds the most :(
wait there's a fortnite amino?
*that's it im done*
Tru. But it WAS also the same with cuphead. When that came out everyone was like "OH MYVGOSSSHHH HAVE YOU SEEN CUPHEAD BRORROO???!!" its basically the same with every game.
LMAO SAME
What's fortnite ?
I know it's a game or something but I haven't really heard that much of it.
Demi Banks K so you shoot people and build walls.
Oh wait, that's America.
Hazell There is an Amino for everything.
I was looking forward to this one, thank you really much!!
I've been watching a lot of tutorials but the mistakes you're pointing out are definitely my worst pet peeves, and your advices are really helpful!
I have a comic called the Regnum and this video will come in handy!
Thank you!
This was very helpful! I'm currently worldbuilding for a comic book that I'm working on for my Thesis as an Illustration MFA, and gods is it difficult! Keep up the videos and art! I'm officially subbed :)
wait how do u forget your sisters name
Can you make a video about your ocs like Planchette and stuff? I want to know how you got your inspiration and how you decided to make a web comic about them. I love your comic and your art style!
Sincerely, me
Please someone tell me if they got the reference
YEET DEAR EVAN HANSEN 👏👏👏
Deh
I'm currently writing a fanfic comic (I'm just going to call that ;w;) and tbh, I'm having a blast! Really does force to get out of your comfort zone. It's called The Ink Demon (warning ya now it's Hetalia related). Still want to improve on making comics but other than that, it's kind of fun
Galactica Crystal that great!
"Fanfic comic" oml I love that phrase
Oooh, what's the premise?
Oh I love me some Hetalia
Did someone say _HETALIA_ ? Lemme see 0-0
"I forgot my sister's name so I only got to the second question"
Me: ha ha who would forget their- instantly forgets my brother's name
"To anime, to drawing, to Kpop."
Sounds good for my nerd-ass.
Yep.
ARMY'S 💜
My only problem is that I can’t draw! I find it so hard and I end up getting so frustrated with myself, I want to draw but I don’t have any patience 😂

Thank you💜💜💜
could you do a video about getting used to digital art some day? i'm really struggling right now and your tips are always so helpful.
When I was in like 3rd grade I didn’t know the word bubbles had to be left to right to make sense and they were just in a random order
Thank u sm for making this! I'm doing a comic for my history project and this is super helpful
*Is reading a comic on Tapas while I get the notification* That's ironic
No it's not?
It’s more of a coincidence than irony...
It's not ironic, it's just coincidental!
that's not the kind of unexpectedness that makes something ironic
*"PERHAPS THE PERSON MAKING THIS COMIC WANTED TO WRITE A DANG NOVEL"*
Me: **dies of laughter**
my comic is currently on hiatus because ive been too depressed and stressed to work on it, but ill probably start on it again soon. i still have the next page almost complete and its pretty sketchy, im probably gonna change up the whole way i make the comic because i dont like the formatting
its called Breathe Fire & Ice, breathe is going to be the series if i decide to do more [might be visual novel or straight up book idk]
its about a cat with the ability to use blue fire, which is unheard of in any other fire elementals. not only that but he has ice powers and he has to balance himself and grow stronger both physically and as a person; all while trying to escape an enemy who wants him dead just because he's a cat, and the cat returns the sentiment
kilathekitty.deviantart.com/gallery/63410928/Breathe-Fire-and-Ice
Keep doing what your doing I hecking love your Channel!
the animation at the end is lovely!
I'm in the process of making a comic and this came in real handy~
Also.. I just finished watching Noragami and I'm really sad because I want more..
So what’s your opinion on homestuck? The way it’s made I mean, it doesn’t really use text bubbles but it does has a lot of text. And it uses a lot of “camera angles” but that’s my opinion.
Sapphire.Skeletons what’s your opinion?
Um Homestuck? Ok, uh cool comment, I guess.
Unicorn Burgers i really like homestuck. I like the story and the way it's told. The way it's drawn is weird but that also makes it reconizable. But i get that the lenght of it and the complexity makes it not for everybody.
I think of it more as a light novel instead of a comic.
Robo Rebu homestuck is over 8000 pages. An actual novel I have beside me has just over 500 pages, homestuck is much more then a light novel lol
Thank you for the inside tips, very informative. Nice artwork too.
All of these comic tips are REALLY helpful because I'm actually trying to make a like fan comic or whatever and I've never really done anything like this before so these tips are gonna be life savers
"I forgot my sister's name" that is such a mood. Lmao, great video, really helped :)
