How Game Juice Made My Game Come to Life

- As an indie game developer who’s working full time, my resources are practically non existing. I’d love to create beautiful, stunning pixel art, but at the end of the day, I’m a game developer and not an artist.
To get over this, I’m a firm believer in taking calculated shortcuts, and no shortcut is sweeter than game juice. Simple animations, shaders, and lights can spice up our game’s environments a lot, and they are very low effort.
I’ve always enjoyed the study of game feel, and implementing these techniques into our own projects can make them feel so much better. I hope you can find ways to steal the example techniques I mention in this video to make your games look as stunning as possible.

Why even ask? It's obviously te birbs that chirp and fly away
@@NickenChugget yeah right? birds make everything better!
@@tissueinu birds for life!
Why is your game not in the official Godot engine showcase. I think it will be a cool addition to show the engine capabilities.
@@vickylance quetzal was featured in the 2022 or 2023 showcase! I've been working on it since 2019, doing our best to get it finished this year
Some of those additions look so minor, yet they add to the overall presentation a lot. I especially like falling leaves in platformers, they make any environment look alive and more dynamic. great job.
I totally agree! Subtle details really add a lot to the overall scene of a game, and falling leaves are definitely one of the elements that bring more life to it
The grass sway looks amazing but the birds give so much life to the environment!
Thanks! Indeed, I also believe that the birds add so much with so little effort
I like the birds most.
Same here! Thanks for letting me know your thoughts
This is so awesome! My fav are the birds!
Thank you! The birds are also my favourite, they add so much charm!
Great game overall It will pop off once u release it I am pretty sure. However, there is a bug where my player suddenly stops walking and I have to re-press D again so I can move it is annoying and a run-killer be aware of it. Also is it possible to add a remap option especially for M&K
Here are something I noticed while I am playing the game
1- Stats like death counter how many level were passed would add a touch to the game
2- Making the spikes and the saws make you die instant instead of taking a heart is good
3- Giving the player a prize for killing would add a lot to the game Ex. creds that could be used later in the game
The game have so much potential please continue on your dev logs and updates.
Didn't know this was happening! Could you get in contact with me either by twitter (@tissueinu) or discord (tissueinu#2246) to see how we can solve it?
Thanks so much for the encouragement and the feedback! Some ideas are stuff that I already have planned, for example the hardcore mode where you only have one life.
@@tissueinu I will get in touch with you soon prolly discord tho
Watched while wearing my Quetzal T-shirt! Excited for more to be added on to the game!
That's so great that you were wearing it! Thanks so much for your support :)
Really nice additions to the game! These of those elements that aren't crucial but some players will stare at for ages.
Thanks so much for the comment! I know...most people won't notice them as single elements but I appreciate them so much in games I can't help myself!
The game is looking great!
Thank you so much!
Looks Awesome!
Thank you!
Game looks awesome, and great tips. Thanks :)
As someone who hasn't followed the devlog but just stumbled upon the game on steam it feels great! I've got around 4 hours in the demo, but I do have some issues. The secrets aren't very fun what I mean with that it doesn't feel wow you accomplished something it feels like you just found something laying around. My other gripe is that it crashes pretty often maybe that's a me thing but it would still be nice if you figured that out. Besides that its great ill be following the devlog and can't wait for the full game release!
Thanks so much for the feedback! As for the crashing, could you reach out to me either on discord or on twitter to see how we can solve this? (@tissueinu) (tissueinu#2246)
Great video ! i like the fact that you get straight to the point
I love all the additions. Can you add more enemies next time?
Edit: Also can you add an option that can change the keybinds?
Thanks! I'm planning on working on new enemies so might do a video on that.
Quality content!
This video was VERY juicy
Thanks - I'm very glad you thought so!
Looks great! Which method did you use for that amazing fog background effect? Is it shader or particles or something else?
Just one question, how do you manage the pause option with shaders? Because with get_tree().paused = true the grass keep moving
Hey, I am new on the channel and, I would like to know what game engine do you use?
I'm using Godot!
@@tissueinuNice, it is great engine keep with it
good
pross-uh-dural? 🤣 pro·ce·dur·al
Due my poor sight i hate the color scheme, cool vid tho, my favorite addition were the god rays cuz they gave more color to the scene making something otherwise i could see as extremly bland and pale, to at least something bearable to look at.
Thanks for the feedback! Do you have any examples of how we can improve this for players like you?
@@tissueinu Idk something that could completly "fix" that cuz i take these things more like a me problem or as some type of game subgenre based on color that i should avoid like a pastel color scheme or games without some sort of outlines on things.
But i'd say that with a filter in the settings that would let you change the brigthness, hue, saturation of the background and character, or just the color scheme in general it would be great.
@@Popotato7777 Thanks for the comments. Accessibility is very important so I'll see what I'm able to improve. Increasing the outline for example is something that I've thought of and I could add it to settings somehow.
