I keep seeing videos of all these different problems with the LLY and it has me amazed that my 3500 dually made it to 300,000 miles as a full time cross country heavy towing truck at 100% stock other than regular fluid changes. The only problems I found evidence that the previous owner had were the connectors on the #2 and #7 injector harness had been spliced in and I found the wiring harness on the pass side of the alternator was starting to rub through. Just started surging a little last week, thinking its the FPR on the CP3, 300K miles I figure it deserves a new CP3 this coming weekend.
Thanks for all these videos you put out, I feel like an expert just from watching all your information, seriously appreciate it all.

Keeping it mostly stock and regular fluid changes are key.
I suspect many people who have lots of problems abuse their trucks and dont do maintenance.
      Stay gold.

I have another improvement suggestion that cured the problem you described for me. I got this idea from a guy in Canada, and it worked great! He found that when the cooling fan kicked on on a long grade under load that the intake would start drawing air primarily from inside the engine bay instead of primarily from behind the headlight, which creates a feedback loop between the intercooler and the turbocharger. One change that GM made in 2006 was to gasket the intake housing to a hole in the right side engine bay sheetmetal, likely to prevent just this issue. This brings outside air from the wheelwell into the engine instead of warm air from inside the engine bay, which breaks the feedback loop between the intercooler and the turbocharger. All I had to do was cut a rectangular hole in the engine bay sheetmetal slightly larger than the air intake, using the intake itself as a guide. Then I used foil HVAC tape to bridge the gap from the intake to the engine bay sheetmetal. Any heat resistant material would do to bridge this gap. GM used a foam rubber gasket of some sort. This cured my overheating on a long grade problem completely! Now, when the truck is moving forward at any speed, the intake air temperature usually remains between 1 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit above ambient. That being said, thanks for this wonderful and clear video, which shows me how to further mitigate these other design shortcomings that can only make this situation better. Your videos are the best!

You ought to make a video showing this mod... could be helpful to us LLY owners. I already have an aftermarket cold-air intake that was installed on my truck prior to my purchasing it, but I'd like to make sure it is pulling in air from the correct area (wheelwell and not engine bay) as you noted.

I have an 04.5 LLY. I've installed the LBZ turbo inlet and a Banks air intake for an 06. Had the PCM tuned for the. MAF and I have EFI Live. I wasn't looking for a race truck, just a reliable rig to tow with. The tuner I used is no longer supporting EFI live. I did the gaskets around the headlights as in the TSB but I still have heating issues. My fan will come on with ambients around75 or higher when I'm driving in the mountains empty. I've had issues with the trans throwing codes and going into Limp mode on one of the "Light" towing modes so I don't use that one. I towed my fifth from SD to AZ last year in January. Coming back, I went over Wolf Creek Pass (10,800') and it was in the 40's so no heat issues and the ALLISON was phenomenal, providing braking on the descent (8%). I haven't cleaned the stack but it's planned for this spring as I have to replace the the lower valance. Do you have specs on the oil cooler? Is there anything that can be done to improve airflow through the stack?

If you're running way hot up a grade you can use the old truckers cooling trick by rolling down the windows and turning the heat to hot as possible and run the fan on high. It sucks ass, but it works.

Thank you for this video, we just bought a very well maintained 2006 Silverado 2500HD with the 6.6 LLY and plan to tow a 12,000 +/- pound (loaded) fifth wheel with it. We are not interested in impressing anyone with our truck or our rig and only focused on reliability. I will do the turbo intake elbow upgrade and add an external oil cooler and perform the other checks you recommended. Thanks again for the insight and informative information.

Kurt's truck could be an early 06 with an RPO of LLY. Not all 06s had LBZs in them. Kurt, if your 06 has RPO LLY then you have a detuned LBZ. They are bolt-for-bolt identical, just difference in tuning because GM ran into a delay in EPA approval when the model year rolled over. Get your truck flashed at the dealer with the LBZ tune if you want improved factory performance or go have fun with an aftermarket solution. You'll be glad you did!
For the record; the improvements in this video do not apply to your 06 LLY. You need to be looking at the improvements for the venerable LBZ because thats really what you have.

I’m loving my LLY which I’ve owned since new.
I’ve I replaced the air inlet elbow, I replaced the turbo outlet down pipe, I replace the exhaust pipe went from 4 inch to 5 inch with a 6 inch top tip. I removed the cat. I removed any obstructions from the front of the grill. I replaced the transmission oil from Dextron 6 to Amsoil torque Drive and installed a PPE Deep and finned transmission oil pan. Finally I unplugged the EGR valve.
Now when I tow my 32 foot fifth wheel with a boat behind it my fan clutch doesn’t even kick in and my transmission barely gets warm amazing!
One more thing. The water pump is gear driven. So If the fan belt breaks you still have cooling fluid pump operation ( marine grade)

Very well said, I like the way you keep this practical, affordable and able for the average user to do themselves. Engine volume metric efficiency and thermodynamic efficiency is the goal. More air flow, decrease intake air temperature and this will keep engine oil temperature in control. The other byproduct of these actions will increase in air density, and with less boost can achieve the same or more reliable horsepower and torque at wide open throttle under full load. This is key for towing, flow makes it go------> (Tip: on a LLY you can cut out an inch on each side of the plastics that cover each side of your intercooler for total cooling surface increase of approximately 1.5 - 2.5%) And I fully agree if budget permits to upgrade transmission cooler and lines.

The Truck 2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD Duramax 4x4 with 330k+ on it currently and up till a year ago it was all stock. Now it has a 6" lift, 6 door conversion, 52 gallon titan fuel tank, and move bumper. I have to say that some not all LLY's may have a over heating problem but in this one it does 180 on the temp on a good day and has never got to hot. (before you say I need new stats yes it got a pair a ways back and it has heat in the winter) It pulled a 16' enclosed trailer for several years for construction. It has hauled all kinds of equipment, project cars and trucks up 11,500lb on a bumper pull for hours on the highway in the heat of the summer yet never has had this overheating people are all of a sudden talking about. Is this a new fact or have a few people have said it and now its set in stone. The LLY was the Duramax all the rock crawlers wanted for a long time now and that hasn't changed. Can someone explain?

If you have a problem running hot when pulling a load and no problem just normal driving you have a clog radiator. I just too my radiator out and gave it a good cleaning so I could see to the other side. I cleaned everything else the best i could and the over heating problem was no more. Take the time to super clean the radiator you will be amazed.

Hey Nick, great video 👍👍👍. I have an CA LB7 and suspect it shares a lot of LLY cooling issues. In fact, I’ve experienced high coolant temps while towing and need to take action. Regarding air flow, the original owner installed a Lund aftermarket grill insert, which looks awesome, but only has a grid of narrow, vertical openings. 😟 Never really gave it a lot of thought.
I think I will start addressing the issue with an oil cooler and go from there. Thanks for the wakeup call!

Does the overheating contribute to head gasket failures? I'm looking to purchase a 2004.5 gmc Sierra with 12,000 original miles. I want the truck to last a long time. I frequently tow my travel trailer as well as equipment trailers. Additionally, I plow snow in the winter. I know I have to keep my plow positioned just right on my 2008 6.0 gas truck to keep good airflow across the stack.

Does the 06 have the same turbo intake restriction issues? And does it need a oil cooler. My 06 diesel has 440000 miles. No engine or transmission or even drive train work ever done on it. I pull a 38 foot fifth wheel camper with a bass boat or a tandem axle trailer behind the camper. Have had some heat issues. Driving 70 mph up long hills. Replaced fan clutch and had the radiator and turbo cooler pulled and cleaned. The heat has caused some low fuel rail pressure issue on long up hill pulls in the days of above 90 degrees.
