      Adding on to this, in-universe, Daria is regularly pegged as being anti-social and condescending, and in earlier episodes of Avatar, Sokka was kind of a jerk. They were both saved by two elements; first, they both had clear reasons for the attitudes they started out with, and second, they both eventually got better as their characters developed.

      That's honestly the series I thought she probably should have rebooted Daria would have been a lot closer to what she was trying to do. It aint even there she to go on too far. Ask for whether to continue with this I think they'd made this into too much of a dumpster fire at this point. If you're gonna recreate an existing IP you can't twist it that far. You've got to remember there are fans that are gonna want to come and watch and they're not gonna like it when you completely throw out all of their characters.

    The mistake these shows keep making is they think it's funny to just be a horrible person without any reason or purpose. I'd honestly blame 'Rick & Morty' for starting it, which was a VERY mean-spirited series (whether you like it or not, you have to agree with that statement), but it's jokes worked because you saw the kind of things the characters dealt with which explained why they were so miserable and angry about everything. To quote one of my favourite comedians: 'life is hard, and it makes you hard too, but you can make it better by being funny'.
    The problem with shows like 'Velma' and even with the 'Harley Quinn' series (at times) is that they don't get that, they think you can just be an asshole and people will love it because 'being a terrible person is great'. Hence why we now have this bitter, cynical, mean-spirited and downright miserable show taking jabs at everyone it feels deserves it without any reason other than 'we're assholes', because as said before, they think that that's excuse enough to act that way, when it isn't.
    Good cynical comedy is saying 'life sucks, doesn't it? Let's have a laugh at it because it's the only thing we can do apart from cry'. 'Blackadder' knew this and was DELIGHTFULLY cynical, with the main character being a powerless person stuck catering to spoiled, out-of-touch and mad people who couldn't run a bath properly, never mind a country / army.
    Bad cynical comedy is sulking in the corner just saying 'fuck you and everything about you'. There's no reason to it other than just being mean-spirited and hateful, which, shockingly, IS NOT FUNNY.

    • @BlueBlazeKing
      @BlueBlazeKing Рік тому +25

      At least it makes sense why Harley Quinn would use those mean spirited jokes, the main cast are villains and can be somewhat annoyed by a certain member’s traits, like how their annoyed at Clayface’s over acting or how Harley is too impulsive. Essentially it’s a roast where each party has a valid point. But in Velma, it seems she can’t go 5 minutes belittling everyone around her in order to make her feel better about herself. Hell she legitimately thought telling everyone that Daphne going to the school shrink to help with her mental health would be so humiliating it would turn her into a social outcast. But instead the students rationally further supported Daphne and further alienated Velma.

The morality of simply being human, of understanding yourself and others and their flaws. And if you wanted to instill change, it was done through empathy. Have someone stand in your shoes who normally wouldn't. But now no, it's sticking to your own lane and judging everyone by race and political leaning. Nowadays it's, pick a side and if you're not on my side then you're racist, then you're woke, or this and that.

    Part of my problem with shows like this, particularly with things like the pointless changing of characters just to "make a statement" is that they always feel like they hurt whatever they're trying to "speak for" than they help it. They tend to focus so much on the message they're trying to convey that they end up creating a bad product, which in turn makes audiences, (myself included, admittedly), more hesitant and cynical towards any product that changes things like a character's race, gender, sexuality, etc.
    This ends up breeding more distaste for the cause than support, and also leads the people who support said causes to take a "you're with us or against us" mentality and blame racism/sexism/etc for people not liking changes, rather than accepting that sometimes people just don't like a bad product. I hate to say it, but the moment I saw that they were changing the character's races for this show, I was immediately annoyed because I knew it meant they were trying to make a statement rather than create something entertaining. Miles Morales is well liked by Spider-Man fans, because they didn't just take all of Peter's traits and put them in a black man. They gave Miles his own personality, his own variant powers, and his own motivations. He did so well, they brought him into the main Marvel universe so he can work alongside Peter. In my opinion, no terrible reboot angers me more than Fate the Winx Saga. For one main reason: because at least most people know what franchises like Scooby Doo, Fantastic Four, Avatar the Last Airbender, The Powerpuff Girls, classic Disney movies and even Thundercats are and not what their reboots make them out to be. Not enough people know what Winx Club is because of either generational divide, people, usually adults, dismissing animation as a genre for kids, casual viewers not knowing which English dubs to choose from with most of them not being 100% accurate, Nickelodeon rebooting it as a badly written preschool show (even rerunning it on effing Nick Jr.) and now this show, presenting it to casual viewers as a badly written teen drama!
    I'll admit I feel bad for the casual fanbase since this show became yet another cancelhanger victim (cancelled on a cliffhanger) but besides them and other crew members who were just doing their job regardless of what show they're making, I feel no sympathy for no one.
    If anything good came out of it, is that introduced casual fans to the REAL Winx Club with the Rai English aka Cinelume dub or both Rai English dub and 4Kids dub since both have some great qualities.

It has to be part of the overarching joke, serve as a catalyst for karmic happenings , provide a different lens, setup a redemption story. It can serve many things in many ways. But if you fail at having it serve something, if the character is just mean for the sake of it or worse: some misconception that mean alone equals funny. Then you just end up with the character being spiteful. And it very much feels like that applies on this show. That it lost sight of what you need to make it work and got blinded by wanting to say something for the sake of saying something.

I love the Deadpool films, Monty Python & the Holy Grail, and even the Chip n' Dale movie partially for how they take potshots at common tropes in their genres. However, when you disregard the viewer's intelligence by letting a joke go on for too long or blatantly explaining it, that's infuriating to me. I'm surprised how no one I've seen has brought up how all of the characters just outright reveal their motivations at the slightest provocation like they are giving an elevator pitch. It's like the writers wanted to make sure that everyone knew that these weren't just flat characters, but instead of showing us they just tell us. That is what I think is the worst part of the show: the poor, lazy writing.

      Agreed. Like how Velma explains her oh so tragic back story to Fred with almost no set up. Or when Dannie started to explain her secret desire to find her birth family out of no where. Or Fred just explaining that he hasn’t started puberty yet to Velma after she found the slightest clue in his house. It all always just comes out of no where

    I feel bad for the animators. They spent months if not a couple of years in the development of this show, and it was a complete WASTE OF TIME! This show maybe really bad and it's plot sucks, but, BUT, the animation and the people who had to make art out of this, deserve credit. I hope those animators go onto doing something much MUCH better than whatever this was.

    My only real issue with the show was:
    1. NO SCOOBY
    2. It got in its own way of the story. It can give us the lesson as well as the story but the lesson should be secondary to a good story because a good story will teach you the lesson without you realizing it

    Another part of this is that Warner Bros cut SO MANY shows and movies - particularly animation - but *this* is what they kept. Like, we couldn’t have that Scooby-Doo Christmas special (or whatever it was), but we get to keep Mindy Kaling’s vanity project.
    Sure. Okay. 🙄

    I've been really poking into this show hard, watching lots of reactions and reviews, and honestly? This is the best piece I've seen on it so far. I think you hit the nail on the head, especially with the bit about 'the wall of protective bullshit'. I'd honestly love to see more of this as more Velma eps are released, because you seem to be getting right to the heart of why this show doesn't work.

  • @memesarekeem
    @memesarekeem Рік тому +17

    I don't think this type of humor works with the Scooby Doo characters. I don't think they need to keep it "safe," characters can certainly be mean to each other, but the problem is the characters in Velma dont seem to like each other. There's a difference between joking around in a vulgar way with your friends and actually wanting to put others down. The scooby cast is meant to be a very tight-knit group of friends, the love "octagon" as you said, they all have special traits and flaws and each were utilized for solving mysteries and each built off on each other. Shaggy and Scooby were cowards but always ran in the direction of clues, Velma was smart to being pedantic but this allows her to predict patterns and solve cryptic mysteries, Daphne may though often getting captured, can hold her own and is extremely clever, and Fred set traps while sometimes overlooking the flaws of them. What one character lacks another would make up for.
    We've had mature and dark Scooby-Doo before, and they are universally loved. Scooby Doo on Zombie Island and the Witch's Ghost have stellar animation, story-telling and are "dark" films that treat their audience with respect and intelligence. The same goes for Mystery Inc, one of the BEST Scooby Doo shows out there, with over-arching stories and such.
    Though not particularly dark, even What's New, Scooby Doo understood its characters, (in fact, I'd say in terms of keeping true to the source material WNSD beats Mystery Inc)
    The dynamic of the characters is what makes Scooby-Doo, well, Scooby-Doo. Even when some are missing from the group, like when it's only Scooby, Shaggy, and Velma, or Scooby, Shaggy, Fred and Velma, and whatever other combinations there have been, the dynamic is still there. Velma doesn't have the dynamic at all. This is where Velma fails the hardest, the characters feel like they could be anyone, the show has no identity.

      These characters are supposed to eventually team up to be the Mystery Inc (at least, that's probably what the creators are going for). I honestly feel like these people wouldn't want to be in the same room together unless some people were literally holding guns to their heads.

    My biggest problem with this is I don’t mind that the characters are not 100% the same as the predecessors I mean I think Velma’s design is cute in my opinion but, they don’t feel like people that exist even in the real world they’re so saturated with buzzwords and other stereotypes that makes them feel like parodies of specific characters archetypes and they’re done in such ways that don’t even feel consistent like one moment Daphne is this stuck up girl and the next she’s a very goofy person and this can happen in just the same episode. So it’s hard to gauge even their identities at times and the writing isn’t smart enough to do anything with these changes.

    The thing about writers is also that a lot of them get positioned to write on certain shows as well. Even if they aren't that into them. Some of the writers on Velma also worked on other non-related shows like Brooklyn Nine Nine and the fourth episode of the show was written by Elijah Aaron, an Emmy nominated TV writer who did several episodes of the sitcom Raising Hope, also has a writing credit on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Bojack Horseman as well as a number of children's shows like Lloyd in Space, the movies based in the show, Recess, and a few others. O.o All I'm saying is sometimes the writers aren't nobodies with no experience. Sometimes they have a resumé.
    As for the production team, I am not sure. The main producer of the show is Kandace Reuter who previously worked on two projects, Scooby Doo! The Sword and the Scoob and Aquaman: King of Atlantis, acting as associate producer and line producer respectively; both of which got generally likable reviews on IMDb. She also acted as associate producer in ThunderCats Roar which got negative reviews due to the characters being butchered. She was also production manager on a show called Bunnicula developed by Maxwell Atoms (Billy & Mandy creator).
    I'm not entirely sure about the exact tasks of each type of producer like line and associate or assistant and how much say they have in the creative process or if it's all just clerical tasks.
    Mindy Kaling acts as executive producer which from my understanding is more legal, financial and/or business paperwork-based decisions rather than creative. I'm not sure to what extent Kaling had creative say since so far she is not credited as writing any episodes (but, correct me if I'm wrong). The other executive producers include Charlie Grande (Charlie Grande Productions) who wrote the first two episodes of Velma and Howard Klein (3 Arts Entertainment), who is a producer and has been credited on numerous films and some other projects by Mindy Kaling (from what I see he is mostly an executive producer, so it's more financial and business than creative. (Grande and Kaling both worked on The Office episodes.
    There is also Sam Register who acts as executive producer. Sam Register is considered a legend in the world o TV animation as he one of the big ones responsible for making Cartoon Network the phenomenon that it was in the 90s and 2000s. He is also the one who created the shows Teen Titans and Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi. Overtime he worked his way up and today he is president of Cartoon Network Studios, Warner Bros. Animation and Hanna-Barbera Europe. I seriously doubt Register had any creative input in Velma and his name is on there because he is the president of the animation studio that did the show as well as perhaps having something to do with his position at Hanna-Barbera. In other words is role was pretty much formal/office orientated.
    The point is a lot of TV writers just work for the production company and write based on the desires of the producers (which in this case I don't know exactly who is making the decisions on what to write for this show, is it Grandy (creator/lead writer perhaps) Reuters (main producer), or Kaling (executive/lead role), or all three?) O.o
    Thank you for reading...
