Agreed. This was the one that I eagerly awaited at the time. The one that totally surprised me, however, was "The Trouble with Tribbles" and the reimagined fly-by scenes.
Excellent. So much of what makes this and Trek great is the incidental music. You can almost hear exactly here John Williams got the 'Jaws' theme in that 'Doomsday March' thing.
@@shauny2285 The original doomsday machine model was, in fact, a windsock dipped in cement. As Gene Roddenberry told Norman Spinrad (the writer of the episode), "We didn't have the money for anything else."
Whatever ship, within or without Starfleet's Roster, if James T. Kirk strides the command deck, even if it's garbage scow, it instantly becomes The Fightingest Ship in the Alpha Quadrant...
According to non-canon sources, that was just the PROTOTYPE for an entire FLEET of larger ones to hunt down and destroy the Borg. The Fleet was abandoned outside the Galactic Barrier between our galaxy and the rest of space.
Is "Norman Spinrad" still alive? He's decades dead. BTW, there was science fiction from the '60s and '70s called "Berserkers", basically Terminator fiction. The fiction of one species exterminating another is nothing new.
There was a book where it was revealed that the Dooms Day Machine was created to defeat the Borg. I forget the name but it was a Next Generation story.
Poor Constellation...it looks like the machine blew out both warp engines and about a quarter of the saucer section, scorched the secondary hull, and the bridge dome, compared to that of the Enterprise, looks lifeless and stuck there up on top---after all Spock did say that the entire bridge was damaged and uninhabitable. But Kirk, Scotty, Washburn and the others manage to breathe just enough life back into her so she can help destroy what wrecked her.
The remastered effects of this episode are outstanding. Especially the scenes of the drifting Constellation at the beginning are top notch. I like these effects way more than the current cgi. You can clearly see the ships in all their beauty. Today you have lense flares and way too fast action. Late Voyager and Enterprise (Archer) had the best effects in my opinion. Especially Voyager's shields I loved the most visually.
This weapon is sold by weight, not by volume 😜 How much mass would a surface area contact per second, what fraction of such charged particles got through “shields”? The Doomsday is like a shotgun with a big, impressive , barrel. We don’t know the other specs in this fictional battle. Let’s just say, it’s gonna spray you, and it’s gonna hurt, but we don’t know how fast.
Quite notable that there wasn't formal names for the saucer section and the drive section at the time. (and I'm not sure that even those are the proper terms) Always confused me because one only thinks of the bridge as the smaller dome on top of the saucer.
@@professorbrainyspecs7366 Thanks for the clarification. Many times, someone states that TOS copied something, even though TOS did it much earlier - - sometimes several decades earlier. 🙂
Best original series episode however overall the original effects I think we’re better. Yes the constellation damage looks better here than the original but overall I would prefer watching the original.
Star Trek was "woke" on Day 1 and always has been. It was literally conceived to express humanistic values. It's in its DNA thanks to Roddenberry and the original series writers. And THANK GOD for that.

I first saw this episode when I was five. I'm 62 now and I've seen it at least 200 times. Love it, love it. It's a masterpiece.
Same here.... I remember the very first time seeing it. Thinking what enemy ship can damage a Constitution Class Heavy Cruiser like that. Like WOW!
The music still mesmerizes fifty odd years later…
One of the highlights of the remastered effects. What they did with the Constellation was awesome work. Thanks, John.

My very first trek episode I saw at six yrs old..fell in love with trek ever since. Best episode ever made

Excellent work! My favorite TOS episode.
Love what has been done to TOS episodes to show what was originally intended, but was technologically undoable. Brings the writer's vision to life.
Agree that this is among the best of the remastered changes. Better detail on the Constellation really helps to set the stakes for the episode.
The original planet killer looked like a paper mache windsock. This version is much better.

I still get chills seeing a mighty Constitution Class ship beaten and broken.
I know what you mean. On the other hand, it is quite heroic how the Constellation, even in her battered state, was able to save the day.

I saw the Robocop and Terminator cartoon! Epic AF!
Nicely done.
Spock: "She may have been wrecked by whatever destroyed these solar systems. Kirk: "Ya think!".
Kirk: no shit
Just gotta love that background music.
Nicely done!
One of the best episodes. Made much better with the improved effects.
Personally I thought the "Doomsday Machine" would have been more than a match for the poor Imperial Death Star.
There was a book where it was revealed that the Dooms Day Machine was created to defeat the Borg. I forget the name but it was a Next Generation story.
I think any star ship from Star Trek would demolish any ship from the Star Wars universe; they are faster and have more weapons.

Far better than the AMT kit “attacked” by a lighter.

Nobody questioned the stupid concept of a starship ‘listing’. Unless in orbit around some body, there is no ‘up’.
what a haunting vissage
I flew something similar back in my Academy days!!

Given they only were on impulse power, should've separated the saucer on the constellation for better Maneuverability, less target to hit.

Actually Jaws did TOS: The Doomsday Machine (the TOS music was produced almost a decade earlier).
