The character played quite a significant role in the series. He appeared in my second favorite episode, The Doomsday Machine, and in my favorite film in the franchise Star Trek ll The Wrath of Khan. I'm glad the time and effort were put into making the clips and edits.
I remember Kyle in the Mirror, Mirror episode. Poor guy got the blame for the transporter mishap. “Your agonizer Mr. Kyle!!” “No Mr. Spock! It wasn’t my fault!” “Your agonizer please!” Lol. Great stuff.
This makes me think if Walter Koenig said something about not being on the main cast when Space Seed was filmed they could of switched Chekov with Kyle. Khan sneaking up behind Kyle and squeezes the back of his head til unconscious. 15 years later.... Khan: But you, I never forget a back of a head. Mister....Kyle.
And he even got screwed in Wrath of Khan. He was one of the Reliant bridge officers who got marooned by Khan! Poor guy. He gets beat up by Khan in TOS, and an even worse fate 20 years later.
Mr Kyle seems almost like a sitcom character. Doofus in space. Poor guy had to wear a red hospital gown before he got a uniform. Also liked his '50s pompadour before they gave him a Caesar do. I'm glad that he finally made commander like everybody else in TOS.
Apparently Mr. Kyle had a lot of responsibility on the ship that changed over time - red (command and helm), gold (engineering, security, and operations), but never blue (science and medical)
@@peterharrington8709 I was wondering when someone would notice that 😀of course red is engineering and security that's why they are easy to kill off there's a lot of engineering / security / operations people but substantially less (very few?) "gold" command and helm officers - how many times does a captain or first officer get killed off?
In the first episode of Irwin Allen's the time tunnel John Winston was one of the crew on the Titanic. The biggest mistake in star trek 2 the wrath of Khan is Khan recognized Mr.Checkov, who not only was not in season 1 but didn't even exist until season 2. If John Winston was with Checkov and Terrell on the landing part than "I never forget a face" would have been a nice touch giving Mr.Kyle a slightly bigger part. Interesting to hear James Doohan voicing Kyle in the animated trek.R.I.P John Winston
Mr. Kyle had finely-tuned survival instincts. Never around when it was time to draft a red shirt for the away team. Later parlayed this talent (and his galaxy-class blond pompadour) into a position as Vice President of the United Federation of Planets.
Notice that during "The Immunity Syndrome", Kirk repeatedly refers to John Winston's character as "Mister Cowell". I took this as Shatner's way of differentiating between Winston's character on the Bridge ("Cowell") and Winston's character ("Kyle") in the Transporter Room. It's far from perfect, but it works for me. And since we kept seeing Kyle wearing utility coveralls in the Transporter Room in Year One and his rank was never referred to, I retconned that Kyle, the Transporter operator, was an NCO ("CPO Kyle" could be the supervisor for Transporters).
This is the kind of the attention in the detail and minor characters that are real believable that makes it all work. Love Mr Kyle character. Along with Checkov, any regular security officers, ,,,,
I always found it amusing that Kyle became Cowl for one episode even though the character of Kyle had already been established. No idea why they did that.
Kyle was the equivalent of "Ted" in Dilbert or "Joe Rockhead" on the Flintstones. He could be plugged into any situation when an additional character was needed.
Mr. Kyle, I bet every shore leave he wouldn't have to pay for a single drink. People likely asked, "Kyle, what crazy sh*t did the Enterprise get into this time?" And boom! They keep the alcohol flowing and he would regale them with the latest shenanigans.
I’m glad that they had him as a reoccurring character, even if he was in the background. Compare this to Voyager, which was stuck in the Delta quadrant. They had endless background characters show up once and then never again, which is odd when they had no way to replenish its Starfleet crew.
Kyle got beat up a lot in the beginning, before he got a commission. Also, I never noticed before that Kyle was in his lieutenant's uniform in the Prime universe, but in his old technician's dungarees in the Mirror universe.
Engineer, technician, so many roles ! Yet he was always "second shift". They should have given him more screen time. Good hidden Star Trek 1st Gen gem !
One of the unsung heroes that toil away in silence letting the glory hogs get all the attention . For every Jim Kirk there are 100 Mr.Kyles (see ? he didnt even get a first name at least it was not crewman number 7) behind the scene keeping the hero alive . At least he never fell victim to the dreaded Red Shirt death clause .
In 1984 I had just moved to the LA area, and was looking for a new barber. As a Star Trek fan (read "nerd"), I had for years worn my sideburns in a Star Fleet style point, and always had to stop barbers from cutting them off square. Anyway, I picked a place called "Pat and Mike's" in North Hollywood, not really expecting much. As it turned out, there were TWO "Pats", TWO "Mikes" and one "John", in whose chair I happened to end up. When he started to cut the sideburns I said, "No, that's intentional," to which he replied, "Oh. A la Star Trek." Astonished, I told him, "You're the first barber I've ever met who recognized that!" "I ought to," he said. "I was on the show for three years." Yes, that day I ended up with John Winston as my barber for the next seven years, until we moved away. Many wonderful conversations about the film industry and his career. And in 1986 a completely unexpected invitation to accompany him to the 20th anniversary Star Trek party at Paramount Studios, walk the sets of the "Big E", and meet many others from the show. Thank you, Mr. DiMarco, for this tribute and memorial for a special friend.

I thought Mr. Kyle had the best support crewman job on the ship. He seemed to know how to do everything, run the science station, fire weapons, navigate. He probably spent a lot of time hanging out in the transporter room or down on the lower decks chill'n with the rest of the crew. I wonder if he was running a business on the side with all the free transporter time he seemed to have?
That character was in quite a bunch of episodes. I believe he finally got the red shirt death in Obsession. Kirk's pursuit to destroy the sweet, smelling, gaseous like cloud. I just read that an unfilmed scene in the episode. Doctor Mccoy revives him, which is why he's seen even more. I didn't know that until now.
Sounds bonkers, I know, but for a very-short time, I was very-mistakenly thinking that the actor who played Mr. Kyle was the same as played by a young Colin Meaney. I guess I very-briefly conflated the two actors just simply because they were (or started out as in Miles O’Brian’s case) Transporter Officers.

Awesome set of videos about Mr Kyle, I never fully realized just how many episodes he was in, and how much screen time he received..
Mr. Kyle solving a math problem in front of the main computer.
Thanks for taking the time to put this together, the forgotten member of the classic crew

Same with O'Brien.

*'Bout time Lt. Kyle got some respect. He was the only Englishman onboard, if I recall.*

It wasn't that big of a scheduling conflict. He was only an hour late, but the filming when ahead without him. The renowned Tholian punctuality!

The scene when Spock beams RedJack off the ship while Kyle is sedated.
