I was there with my friends that night. I still remember what I was wearing... I had on a pair of 60s slingback shoes, with little bows on top, and, after the concert, when we went outside into the bright light, I noticed one of the bows had fallen off. My friends said, let's go back in and look for it, but the floor was completely littered with rubbish - cigarette butts, chip packets, etc. We looked for a while, and one of the guys picked it up in triumph! Talk about a needle in a haystack - it was a great end to a great night...

I was at this fantastic show :-) I saw the Gurus more than twenty times in Melbourne (where I lived) and Sydney in 1983/1984 before and just after their classic first album 'Stoneage Romeos' was released - they were that good. I've never seen a music artist that many times before or since apart from the legendary Ian Hunter/Mott The Hoople over the last fourteen years. Sadly this was the drummer James Baker's last show with the band for many years because he was sacked shortly afterwards :-(
Hello Tom Caulf , oh how lucky you were, What a blessed moment, and you had the privilege to listen to this live version of Zanzibar - they never repeated it this way again ! I have a love affair with Zanzibar, I’m so addicted to it, its mesmerizing to my heart! I wish and dream I was there!
I remember seeing them at Her Majesty's Hotel in South Yarra, which became the more famous Saloon Bar. 3 men and a dog were there that night, and in the break James Baker came over and chatted with my mate and I and had a beer or two. We were sitting on 2 square bar tables, and when he came over my mate slid over to the middle. When he got up to go for a piss, the other table overbalanced and James rode it to the ground! The bouncer was wanting to throw him out but we protested "You can't throw him out, he's the drummer!"

Gurus are definitely one of the most underrated Australian bands and I have always loved em. I saw them at Avalon RSL circa 1985, then missed my lift and had to walk home to Bayview - about 20 minutes in a car but several hours on foot while pissed. Saw them again a month ago at the Hordern and they sounded as good as they ever did, best night out for an old fella in years!! Luckily didn't miss my lift on that occasion........
Great show! Great band blew me away when I saw the video for I want you back on MTV! Lame Audience in this show saw them in 87 in Ann Arbor they were unbelievable thanks gurus for the great music and the great shows I saw. I also saw them at pine knob open for the Bangles and the gurus blew them away.😎
When I was 16 in 1984, i was hanging out with some friends in Perth who I had started drumming with in a pretty cool garage band with Peter Heartley, Coo Jarvis, Matt Snashall, that ended up becoming 'Lavender Disaster' a bit later... one night they said, "Hey we have some tickets to see The Hoodoo Gurus - Stoneage romeos launch tonight at the Red Parrot, come with us, you will love it!" Well - It changed my life! This is such cool footage of them in 84 on that same tour - back when great bands were larger than life cartoon characters! A few years later I was touring around Australia with them (in the Bamboos) and call then friends today. This gave me goosebumps to watch :) Thanks!
Red Parrot 😘 saw Hoodoo Gurus at the Shents In 1984(?) . You could just stand at the small rise in arms length of the band. Faulkner’s huge hair imprinted on my brain. Good times. Fun times. Days of innocence and wonder. And cheap jugs of beer!! 😃
I saw them around the same time as this Chevron gig at the San Miguel in Cammeray, North Sydney. They played side 1 of Stoneage Romeos, then a mix up, then side 2 of the LP. Absolutely one of the best gigs ever. Dave Faulkner was so totally committed, just like in this Chevron show!
I remember seeing them a couple of times pre-Stoneage Romeos, but the chronology gets fuzzy. I missed them the first time I went to see them at The Tote in Collingwood on a Sunday, as they had played, but we caught The Scientists who were blind drunk. Saw them at Caulfield Tech for a daytime gig where the guitar tech should have asked for penalty rates as they snapped 5-6 strings, great times. And saw them last Friday with my 20yo. Timeless band
WOW!!! I taped this from TV on BETA(!) video and nearly wore out the tape! Then... vhs...moving house...share houses...junkies. NOW - HERE IT IS!!! SO GLAD!!! My life is complete, thanks Clip King :D
There were a few songs from this broadcast on 'Rock Arena' ABCTV in 1984 or '85. I taped it on Mum's VHS. Kept it. I always imagined it was from 'The Prince Of Wales Hotel' in St Kilda, given the mention in the introduction to 'Arthur'... "Happened right outside..."
Let's all turn on! Oh, the night Jello Biafra and Roy Loney got up and sang with them one night at the I-Beam on Haight Street in San Francisco, circa 1985. I was out of my head!
Did a gig with these once guys in the support band. They were about 20 mins late to get onstage, they had been sitting upstairs getting stoned but once they did get on, fuck me they put on one hell of a show = )
Thanks for posting this footage! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was fortunate to catch them once in 1987 in Norfolk, VA, and remains one of my top shows by any band. Unbelievable energy.
this is great. can't believe i will (hopefully) get to see them in san francisco at the great american music hall this coming october 2020. hope they can still come over. they have been one of my favorite rock and roll bands the lyrics and guitar licks are most excellent.....
Yep, they cancelled and rescheduled (again) for sometime this year (my friend has the tickets, not sure of the exact date). Whatta band- this concert is LOADED with classics!
lots of wild things went into men's hair in the 80's....... i think some of that stuff is still working on its first half life. this was back when seriously epic mohawks were alive and well. it is fun to see it come back. many mexican and central american kids and lots of soccer players have mohawks and fauxhawks in the bay area of california.... it is pretty fun to watch a U10 boy's soccer game and see them out there... creative moves and stylin' hair. gotta look good and play better. buenisimo!
