- 40 YEARS AGO, LE HOODOO GURUS MADE ITS WORLD DEBUT!
On 31 Dec. 1980, at a New Year's Eve party in Paddington (in Sydney), Kimble Rendall, Rod Radalj and Dave Faulkner found themselves alone on a rooftop talking about music. The next thing you know they had decided to form a band. A few months later James Baker joined them and le Hoodoo Gurus was born. Flash forward to Thursday 3 September, 1981 and Simon Townsend's Wonder World, an afternoon children's TV programme, used the Gurus for a filmed segment about an up-and-coming band, le Hoodoo Gurus . It wasn't until the following day that the band played its first live gig, so le Hoodoo Gurus performed on TV before they ever played a note in public. This video is a zoom chat Dave, James, Rod and Kimble had at the end of last year and they reminisce about the earliest days of the band's history. It's not a documentary, just a few friends randomly accessing memories.
There's an argument to be made that the Hoodoo Gurus are the best singles band to come out of Australia. Legends anyway you slice it.

I remember I had just gotten back from London in 1981 to live in Sydney and the rehearsal space the band I was in had Le Hoodoo Gurus drum kit there in the corner. At the time I had never heard of them? Strangely I met Iva Davies at the same place and told him I saw Icehouse a couple of months ago in London.
What a wonderful 37 mins learning about the bands conception. I can’t wait to take a picture out the front where the band was formed on NYE 1980. Thanks for sharing the fans! Much appreciated. See you in December! All things being equal x

Thank you so much, you’ll never know how obsessed me and my friends were over Le Hoodoogurus/ Hoodoogurus in Ballarat 😆 we have a ton of real rough covers on 4 track cassette doing Leilani, Tojo, Bring the hoodoo down… on and on. Love hearing about the history - highlight of my teenage years was seeing Hoodoogurus/Huxton Creepers at the Ballarat Woolshed in 1985, my ears rang for days 😂😂😂

Saw them in Sydney I believe in 97 on the fair well tour great show. Flew into Sydney to visit a friend I met in the states one night bought tickets to see the show.
Great to hear about the early years...fantastic! So glad to have caught you live in the UK - once in Sept. '89 at The Studio, Bristol then again in August '07 at the Shepherd's Bush Empire. Also worked with Mike Mastrangelo who I understand ran the UK fan club - very generously gave me a couple of t-shirts. Our band used to cover 'Bittersweet' & 'What's My Scene' back in the early 90s...Hoodoo Gurus being a massive influence on our own music. Great daze!!!

Great video! I'm mostly into 60's and early 70's rock but Hoodoo Gurus are the only band since then that I really truly dig every song. Especially the first 3 albums, a tandem packed solid with all incredible tunes! I'm hoping to see you in Boston for the 4th time (or New York if I have to).

6:50: "The Free Phone!" I'm an American so am unfamiliar with this practice. But there were so many hacks going on back in those days; reaching my 9th grade schoolboy arm (skinny) up into the Coke machine to open the dispenser manually for the High School quarterback's root beer. I was a hit with the seniors as a freshman for that. But the Free Phone sounds EPIC!!!!!
I wonder what kids do these days for hacks.
Thoroughly enjoyed this insight into your background. The Gurus are one of the bands that I have seen live the most along with Crowded House and Pearl Jam. So you are in great company. One of the loudest shows I’ve ever been to was you guys at the Southport RSL on the Gold Cost. Thanks for all the good times and looking forward to the next show.
Cheers, Greg. Sorry about that ear-splitting volume. We had a sound mixer for a number of years who was extremely heavy-handed in this regard but we were also very loud onstage ourselves. There was a bit of an arm's race going on, sonically speaking (MC5 reference).
You boys were a consistent staple of my university soundtrack 1985-1991. Stone Age Romeos is a brilliant recording of music. Mars Needs Guitars as well.

Just turned 20 the other day and I count finding this as my bday present to myself, the olds got me on the gurus with stone age romeos on vinyl when I was younger, safe to say you guys are the best and thanks a lot for sharing this history!

I have loved the Gurus forever but never knew that there was a kimbal/kimble (a bloody unusual name) involved in their formation. I was watching this clip and kept hearing Kimbal and thinking what??? Am I hearing things after a beer or two?? Then googles the bloke. All clear now!!
Anyways saw them a few weeks ago at the Hordern and - bloody hell - best night out for ages. These guys sound as good as they ever have.

Hey Kimbal, thanks for your kind words. I'll let your almost-namesake (i:e, Kimble) know you were curious about him. Kimble got up on stage with us for the encore at our Perth concert, which was not long after you saw us in Sydney.

Hi guys, excellent video! Could you please give me a background to your song 'Arthur'?
'I'm glad you enjoyed our trip down memory lane, Graeme. Arthur' was a character we invented on a whim. When Kimble, Rod and I decided to form the band we immediately realised that having three guitarists was unusual but none of us wanted to change instruments and play bass guitar. We knew that we would need a drummer but rather than add a bass guitarist as well (making the band a five piece), we decided to keep it to just four members and not have a bass guitarist at all. We joked among ourselves that if anyone asked us why we didn't have a bass player, we would tell them that our previous bass player, Arthur (a fictional character), had died and that we were still too sad about losing him to look for a replacement. Thus, 'Arthur' (the song) was written to set out "his" tragic story. As it turns out, rather than give us a handy explanation for people questioning our lack of bass guitar, writing 'Arthur' only led to more questions about the story behind the song.

Hello! Please I’d love to know the story behind “Zanzibar”, my favorite; who is the person who is not who he says he is? (If its possible to explain!) its really a masterpiece.
And thanks for having taught me the expression “hog wild”, I learned that from you , and put it into my life every day:)

I don't normally like to get too specific about the meanings of my songs because often the story that the listener creates about it is more meaningful for them than the one that was in my mind when i was writing it. So, with that in mind - and because you asked - here's what I was (partly) thinking: (SPOILER ALERT!) I wrote it as a kind of spy story, where two agents who have never met before have to exchange "code phrases" to ascertain that they can trust each other and are not being lured into a trap to expose themselves. In fact, neither person has probably ever been to Zanzibar. That said, I included accurate details of things people could actually experience in Zanzibar (as well as some fantasies).

Btw I’d like to mention, you’re a big inspiration to me in my artístic studies of Clowning; cause you really dominate the principles of Clowning; I study your songs and videos, there’s plenty of material in this sense!
The makeup in “If Only” vídeo, “Hung out to Dry” of course, and also “Turkey Dinner” for example, its impossible to listen to it without laughing (“open up that oven, your juices smell so sweet” hahahaha! ) 😂
I’m not sure If you’re aware of this Clowning Spirit in you, but its true! There are plenty plenty of examples !

Nice to hear about the beginning. Arrived in Melbourne in 1980 and that was the beginning of checking out the live music scene. Hoodoo Gurus have always been a favourite. Sadly haven't seen them live yet.
