  • The Xbox One X is still one of the most powerful consoles out there, and with an internal or external SSD we can bring it a lot closer to the Series S & X - so let's go through that process and see if it's worth it!

    For anyone still on an Xbox One X, or any Xbox One for that matter - I highly, HIGHLY recommend purchasing an external SSD for installing games. It significantly improves load times and really helps the overall experience.

      @@WeskerR37 Well, it's a "yes/no" situation. It's better to just plug in an external drive if you're just going to launch a game and be done with it. It's better to upgrade the internal drive if you spent a lot more time in the menus (doing Microsoft Rewards, searching the Microsoft Store, changing settings, etc.). So if you get frustrated with the OS, do the internal upgrade. If you barely even notice the OS, then go external. External has the additional advantage of portability between Xboxes, and it's an incredibly useful thing to have if and when you upgrade to the current-gen, as you run back-compat games off of the external drive.

    • @ScrapKing73
      @ScrapKing73 Рік тому +1

      @@WeskerR37 You're welcome. Now that prices have come down, I think *every* console owner should have an external SSD. On the older systems, it will provide more space and faster loading times. On the new systems, space on the internal drive is at a premium, and expanding the internal storage is very expensive, so putting apps and back-compat games on an inexpensive USB SSD takes important pressure off the internal storage. So every console owner will benefit from an inexpensive USB SSD.

    4:05 I recently put an internal ssd that I got for dirt cheap at micro center in my One S, and I'll say that while people keep talking about the sata II limitation of the One/One S, an internal SSD has VASTLY improved the speed and overall feel of the Xbox UI. I mainly use my xbox as a streaming device these days, and opening netflix or hbo used to be slow and the apps themselves would feel slow and laggy in menus. After the upgrade, apps launch noticeably quicker and my inputs are responsive in the menus. Games also do load significantly quicker as well, though maybe not quite as fast as an external ssd, I would say an internal drive upgrade is definitely worth it.

      Yeah, I had similar results on my One S. Most OS operations are random accesses, which a SSD accels at while not needing a ton of sustained reads. Plenty of games also do random reads, so SATA3 isn't necessary there either. Heck, on PC, going from a SATA3 SSD to a multi gb/s NVME doesn't really make a difference in most games.

      Yes upgrading to a SSD will always win over a mechanical HDD on almost any interface. It's just how much money do you want to spend on old tech. Most SSDs cost a lot. A new series S can be had for the price of a 2tb SSD. Well almost the same price. A good Samsung 2tb SSD cost over $200. Series S cost $299 before tax. This video helped a lot!
    I bought my Xbox One X around when it first came out in around 2017. I remember it being 'groundbreaking' with its six terraflops of processing power even though nobody and their grandma knew what a terraflop was. We just knew the Xbox One X had some serious performance, and it still does.
    Fast forward to now, and the HDD is really starting to show its age, not just with boot and load times, but especially with downloads since I have 1gbps internet hardwired into it.
    Now that I've got the SSD into it, everything is blazing fast. Hopefully, I can use this console until Microsoft stops supporting it with new games.

    The biggest reason to replace the internal drive to a SSD is general system responsiveness. I replaced mine a year ago when I was dealing with games failing to launch. System lockups. Games also download faster on my Gigabit service with an internal SSD. The Boot animation will auto reinstall upon the next OTA update your system will install. Since I use my Xbox One X as a secondary machine, my Series X is my primary, it has made a world of difference.

    Thank you for such a detailed tutorial. I upgraded my Xbox one X with Samsung 870 EVO 1TB 2 years ago, then did another upgrade to 2 TB last year. What i can say is every dollar is worth of it ! The price of SSD has been going down to a quite resonable range and people with old consoles should consider the internal upgrade first if he or she has the ability to dissamble the console. However, what modders concern is the maximum capacity or limitation of the Xbox One consoles. I have viewed several videos made by XFiX(aka author of Xbox HDD master script). He said the limitation of user content partition is around 1.8TB or so. In other words the max standard capacity of SSD would be 2TB. Though we can partition the SSD of greater capacity and get beyond the limitation with Xbox HDD master script tool, we cannot use it because once trying ,it causes partition corruption and data lost. I just bought another new 4TB 870 EVO last week and this information interrupted my plan because I was just aware of it yesterday.

Thx for taking the time (I've made YT vids too, so I know EXACTLY how much work it is!!!)! I've heard from other YTers that you CAN'T clone the HDD to SSD and have it work, but I'm VERY skeptical (haven't tried it myself, but I'm THINKING about it). I bought a used One X back in the summer and I LOVE it. However, the loads times are frickin' BRUTAL! Two weeks ago I bought a used Series X, which I *LOVE*, but it's not detecting my home theatre/TV setup properly so I'm pretty pissed off. Been considering putting an SSD in my One X and just using that for a while instead. My One X detects that my TV can play games at 4K/60, but my friggin' Series X says I can only play games at 1080p/120! BS! I've tried EVERYTHING I can think of, but nothing works, so I'm mad enough to go back to a console that WORKS PROPERLY with my setup. Cheers, mate! :)

    I installed 2TB Samsung's into both my Gears 5 LE One X & Taco Bell One X. Not only is the added storage over the factory 1TB HDD nice. But as noted in this vid it all just runs/loads/installs better on an internal SSD.
    Not only that, but I thermal cam'd my HDD & SSD both under use. The HDD ran at 135F while the SSD ran at 85F. The 50F drop in drive temp helped the system run cooler and quieter as the fan didn't have to work as hard with less heat being generated in the console.
    I also went ahead and replaced the thermal paste in both. While I did it when the consoles were right around 1 year old since date of manufacture, the factory thermal paste had already dried up and was hard. Fresh Arctic MX-4 thermal paste and the exhaust temps after 2 hours of use at 4K resolution and it thermal temp'd 6% cooler with just fresh MX-4. So then they ran nearly silent after SSD & MX-4 install. Highly suggest slapping in some fresh quality thermal paste if you're going to open it up to do an SSD install.

I tested this against 2 of my friends Xboxes and mine won because the SSD caused at least a fourth of all loading times to be shaved off. Im just saying that when people say that it doesn't really make a difference on the Xbox One S, they are wrong. You kind of have to do it to really see the difference instead of just looking at the specs of its SATA interface and thinking you have all of the answers right there. One X Project Scorpio owner here and I also did this exact upgrade earlier in 2022 with the same SSD, I also have a external 2TB Seagate Barracuda Fast SSD which was expensive $300.00 and looks GOOD! with the green LED light bar thats totally XBOX so in total 3TB of fast Top Tier SSD storage and $437.00 almost as much as the console witch is still about the same situation to for the new consoles as in price for 3TB.
    I decided over 2 years ago I would keep the One X till the next enhanced consoles come out and why I invested so much in the storage along with Thermal grizzly thermal pads and Artic MX-5 Thermal paste and I would say the console runs great and quite and no matter what you throw at it such as the new Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, cause of the Samsung internal SSD and with Texture Streaming set to High my console has none of the pop in issues like in the Digital Foundry video they Did on Warzone 2.0 and load times are fast! and all the games he tested here I have and played and they load and Stream textures and assets flowless.
    I'm so glad I waited for the Xbox One X to come out I was really about to get a One S when it released … I still have a good amount of back log of games to play let alone playing new games like MW2 and Final Phantasy 7 Crisis Core these new titles and more will all run in 4K on the X and I'm very good with that till the Series X Elite comes out which is going to blow our minds with how powerful that will be, till then I will have my One X as my daily driver looks like 2023 things will be slowing down a bit with new major titles going to current Gen consoles only but we still have new stuff to look forward to.
    To all my gamers who like me will be gaming on a One X or a last Gen console still, Defiantly upgrade your HDD to a SSD, internal or External.....Just Do it!

    Pretty good video my friend, and you are absolutely correct about the swapping of the HDD for an SSD, big gains! But a couple things that you are factually incorrect on... Firstly, the Series S is MOST DEFINITELY capable of running games @ 4K resolution, as long as it has the GPU and memory bandwidth headroom, so it's usually limited to smaller scale games that do so. There's actually a studio that managed to get their game running @ 4k120 on the Series S! And secondly, yes, the One X does have a bit more (on paper) GPU headroom than the Series S, but in no way shape or form can it be considered "more powerful" when the entire package is considered. The CPU, the SSD, and the memory bandwidth in the Series S is in a league above its predecessor. So far we haven't seen ANY titles taking advantage of MOST of the performance saving software features that will truly allow this little beast to roar! The One X is fantastic, I loved mine to death, but I can't state it enough how much that thing trails in comparison to the Series S.

  • @Dark_Jaguar
    @Dark_Jaguar Рік тому +5

    Adding an internal SSD (2TB in my case at a good speed, fully saturating the SATA3 6GB connection that HDDs just can't come close to hitting) makes a huge difference. For those on the fence about internal vs external, don't discount what a difference speeding up the OS itself makes.
    MS may not officially support this, and their size support (internally) is unfortunately limited to very exact capacity lists matching what their various models originally came with (maxing out at 2TB), but it's extremely streamlined all the same if you follow the above video. Just quickly restoring save files from MS's cloud works perfectly and I didn't bother with a drive clone either.
    There is ONE important caveat to this. The restoration file from MS doesn't include the boot animation for the One X. As a result, you break that with this method. While there's some complicated manual fixes, I found that the best fix is to simply wait until the next major OS upgrade from MS. This will include that video file and restore it during the upgrade process. This method should work right up until MS ends support for the console. At that point the rougher manual method will need to be employed.

The USB Connected SSD can't help with that and only help with games. I tested a game called Super Lucky Tale and it was crazy how much faster the game loads with the SSD than with the slow HDD.
    Super Lucky TALE NUMNBERS - 00:1:54 with slow HDD and 00:48.97 with the faster SSD, It was a deference of about 1 minute and five seconds faster with the SSD than with the slow Xbox HDD.
