Why The US Dietary Guidelines Don’t Apply to 90% Of Americans And How They Can

  • The dietary guidelines laid out by the government are conflicting with good health in so many ways. For one, they are recommendations that would only work for someone who is already healthy, yet close to 90% of our population in the US is metabolically unhealthy. They also don’t take ethnicity and socioeconomic status into account, among many other factors. This is a big issue. Clearly, we should be providing Americans with guidelines that will actually serve their health. And research shows that whether we like it or not, as a society we’ve followed the guidelines over several decades and suffered the consequences with worsening health.
Today’s guest has been a huge inspiration to me, as she’s challenged the conventional wisdom on nutrition and continues to expose the truth behind our guidelines and the food industry. Nina Teicholz is a science journalist and author of the New York Times bestseller, The Big Fat Surprise, which upended the conventional wisdom on dietary fat-especially saturated fat-and spurred a new conversation about whether these fats in fact cause heart disease. Named a Best Book of the Year by the Economist, Wall Street Journal, and Mother Jones, among others, it continues to be called a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the amazing story of how we came to believe fat is bad for our health-and what a better diet might look like.

True. I was diagnosed prediabetic and the doctor showed me the food pyramid and told me to eat a balanced diet. Suffice to say it went downhill from there until I switched to a very low carb diet. And I'm not even in the US. Yes, the guidelines impact the whole world.

People don't understand how POWERFUL the marketing has been - and it comes at us from every direction. They can steer us toward any food group they like and we DO follow -- as a group. And it's all the media, including the special health magazines and internet sources we go to for the "real" information. I know no one in here is that susceptible but the masses around us are being steered down a sickly path to an early death.

I found this video by accident as Nina Teicholz's name is not in the title or the first paragraph of the description! Why would Mark avoid using her name?

I found this by searching for Nina Teicholz. When someone is a guest interview, their name may not be included in a title. This is a bit like a book where the authors’ of the chapters may not be included in the title of the book. Teicholz is fantastic.

What those people (who are supposed to help people) did with their false recommendations is criminal. Crooked as the year is long. They should be convicted without hope of the political parties of pardoning them. And then arrest the political parties that helped this happen. Yes, I meant parties.

German physicist Max Planck somewhat cynically declared, science advances one funeral at a time. Planck noted “a new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.”

Why would healthy Americans follow the guidelines? Wouldn't that make them overweight? I don't understand why doctor Hyman keeps saying that. I will continue to follow a low carb whole foods diet...

T2d here. It took me 6 years to find out but it's not just are dietary guidelines from the food pyramid or my plate. Even the American diabetes association is totally off. It never made sense to me that when I was first diagnosed and on insulin and told to count carbs and 150 to 200 grams a day. So here I am taking insulin. Eating carbs that required me to take insulin. More carbs are I eat the more insulin I have to take. More insulin I take more weight I gain. More weight I gain more insulin I need even for those same carbs. That cycle never made sense to me. So early on I played game with myself. The goal was to take as little insulin. If my blood sugar was 120 or less pre meal I could eat 30 to 50 carbs and no insulin. And that worked for two years. When I got off the insulin. Slowly crept back up for 3 years. Begged my doctor for a year to put me on insulin because I watched my A1C creep up to 9.1. when he finally did it I got it back down to 7.8 but I gain weight. Then we put me on Ozempic in April. A1c down to 6.1 but I'm not sure it's worth the cost to my metabolism. I have absolutely 100% no appetite. I hate it. I have changed my diet. No procrssed foods 90 percent of the time. I will give this till April and then I'm getting off of it. Using it to move for me it's better to go mostly plant-based. Not totally. Moving towards Mediterranean diet. Where my animal proteins will be fish mostly. Very little dairy. Forget the grains or very little. We'll see how this works. Lost 18 lbs. Want to keep that up. But get off this Ozempic. Possible side effects care crap out of me. No appetite also means I don't feel thirsty. I have to force myself to remember to drink and eat. Urrr. Don't do it unless it's your very last resort. Try plant-based try keto Try Mediterranean try dash and exercise first. Trying eating patterns that going to work for you for the rest of your life. No sugar. That's my advice that I am working on. Your doctor won't give you good nutrition advice. He doesn't know. Eat healthy means nothing.

I am disappointed in this presentation of data/information. I counsel adults on nutrition and specialize in kidney disease and in general, Americans, are OVER consuming on the processed foods, particularly refined CHO--and we're not talking 3oz per day as per the DGAs. 6 oz of grains in total is actually NOT that much. If an adult ACTUALLY ate EXACTLY what was recommended in the dietary patterns, to the T, (did you notice that Mediterranean Diet is spelled out and has been listed as one of the healthiest diets world-wide...think "Blue Zones" for longevity, it follows the DGAs) Americans WOULD be healthier. I utilize the DGAs for my clients + layer on the medical nutrition therapy approrpiate for their disease states and my clients become imperically healthier and it is measurable and objective. The fundementals are there in the DGAs and it's sad that there are so many non-RDs purporting infomration that takes away from them.

The last time (and I do mean LAST TIME) I visited my pcp she referred me to a nutritionist. I obediently went to the nutritionist who tried to pump me full of all the conventional and deadly lies so many nutritionists peddle and suddenly I completely lost it! I started yelling at her that she didn’t know what she was talking about and doing to hurt people and THEN I LEPT OUT OF THE CHAIR AND LUNGED TOWARD HER! I was so angry that I was really about to punch her stupid lights out! Fortunately, I had a friend with me who grabbed me, held me back and prevented me from punching that stupid nutritionist. The nutritionist looked terrified and she scurried out of the examination room. It took me a while but I finally calmed down and my friend assisted me in getting home SAFELY UNSCATHED BY THAT IGNORANT NUTRITIONIST. Phew.
Of course I was no longer welcome in that office which must have been God looking out for me and keeping me safe 😄❤️😇 REJECTION IS GOD’S PROTECTION SO THANK GOD THAT NUTRITION OFFICE REJECTED ME!
PS: I won’t name names but I will say that this was at a famous medical center in a big California city… a medical center that claims to be “number one in California and number six in the country…” if this is the best we’ve got no wonder so many of us are fat, sick and dying!

Can you explain why the longest lived people in the blues zones do Not eat tons of saturated fat? I believe in eating ALL whole foods in moderation and that includes saturated fat, but just because a small amount is OK does not mean it’s OK to eat as much as you want! When it comes to eating, many people believe what they Want to believe and if you research enough, you Will find articles that say exactly what you want them to say. And that includes if you want to be a vegetarian, vegan, eat all meat, or tons of fat. You can always find the so called ‘research’ that will say exactly what you want to hear. The truth is we need to eat a sensible amount of vegetables, beans, starches, and meat. The people that eat this way ARE the healthiest and live the longest! It’s ridiculous to think eating all meat, all vegetables, or tons of fat is OK.

I don’t think Nina is saying to eat tons of fat but sub out the industrial seed oils including margarine, canola, peanut, etc oil that are not found in nature naturally but made in a plant. Lard has a very similar fat profile as olive oil which is unfortunately often sub with seed oils. I switched to keto and lost 30 pounds easily, body became less inflamed, reversed many chronic diseases so yes it works. No longer keto but staying low carb and try to refrain from wheat.
