4:55 is the real dynamic range test, in my opinion. The Sony has almost a HDR look with the background and foreground having excellent detail vs canon which has lost most of the details in the background. Reducing exposure in canon will not fix this as Canon sensors still haven't caught up to the Sony level.

I have both the R5 and the A7r4, mainly for Wildlife. For me the R5 is the clear winner, the autofocus is superior, especially the Animal Eye Autofocus. What I also like on the R5 is the build quality, it’s much better than the A7r4. Also the CFEXPRESS memory interface of the R5 smoked the SDCARD interface of the A7r4. R5 is for me simply the best.

Yes in virtually every area the R5 outperforms the A7RIV. It's not really close. The R5 is a next generation camera compared to the A7RIV. Now Sony will also leap into that generation with their next iteration but for now really there is no comparison.

The Adapter ist actually free. It was part of the package for the RP and R, and for the R5 and R6 you can register to get it for free. On the other hand, Canon released a bunch of cheaper RF variants which are actually better then the more expensive EF glasses (which shows how good the RF glasses actually are). So there are more then enough options for RF, and with the adapter you get access to 20-30 years of glasses from Canon and other manufacturers. This will actually give you more options than any other manufacturer has to offer.

Honestly, the reason I’m most likely going to get the Sony is because Sigma has their lenses available in the native E-mount. For those of you who don’t know, Sigma’s Art lenses are on par (sometimes exceeding) Canon’s L Series in sharpness - for about the third of the cost. While I do prefer the rendering and bokeh of Canon’s lenses, I always feel their price points are unjustifiably high considering there is a much more affordable variant.
With that said, I do prefer Canon’s body for multiple reasons. They’re just designed better with a superior user experience. Like the photo and video toggle which allows you to switch the format and use the mode wheel - on Sony, you have to change the video mode in the Settings menu. There are a lot of things like that, too. Don’t get me started on Sony’s buffer...
My question is, when using an adapter for the R5, are the images on par with these new lenses, or are they noticeably softer?

The a7RIV has literally nothing over the R5. The R5 can do everything the A7RIV can do with video with zero limitations, because the A7RIV only gets up to 4K30 and 8 bit. The overheating limits are for the higher quality video modes that the A7RIV totally lacks, like 8K and 4K HQ, and even those have largely been solved with the latest software update.

    • @loudandclearmedia
      @loudandclearmedia 3 роки тому +1

@@reasonandthought1629 Not exactly. The A7R4's 4K video is oversampled from a 6K sensor readout in super 35 mode (it is a 61MP sensor, remember), and it will record that mode with no time limit until you either run out of card space or battery. Yes, it's 8bit, but it's REALLY sharp. As far as I know, all the oversampled modes on the R5 run into the heat issue and only the softer, non oversampled lower bitrate 4K is immune to meltdown. Horses for courses. There are times I would definitely want the flexibility of 10 bit, but in a controlled studio environment doing corporate interviews and such I'd pick the Sony 100% of the time.

Gents, thanks for the unbiased comparision. Couple points though: AF speed and accuracy - you are not comparing the brands and bodies, but an fairly old Sony Zeiss and an at least one generation newer Canon lens AF design. If you had been really after AF comparision, you should have compared them with the same lens available for both bodies. Color rendition - again, quite lens specific to Zeiss, as opposed to the body. Image sharpness - come on gents, this was rather unfair, considering that a 61MP sensor will always be less forgiving for focusing mistakes (esp. of operator mistakes) than a 45MP one. Should you really want to compair that, please do a proper test that takes operator errors out of the equation. I would be quite astonished if the good old Zeiss lens could not at least match the Canon sharpness, micro contrast, etc. Buffering fenomena - indeed I managed to force Sony into a buffer overload, however it has never been a problem for my typical use case. ISO performance - indeed I would not use the Sony much beyond 6400 as it gets too noisy for my taste, similarly to Canon`s 6400+ ISO performance even if Canon is somewhat better.
So overall, it is interesting to watch such an influencer video and learn your gentle style of shifting perceptions.

I loved the simple straightforward comparison. But when you tried comparing image quality, there was huge flaw in my opinion. The RF 50mm is a new glass and its quality is good and it was made for the R5. The Sony equivalent was not there when you made this video and that old Zeiss lens is not going to perform, but there was the 35mm G master and the true imaging quality of the RIV will show in that, again that was made for the RIV (I mean its newer lens), its liner motor AF system changes the game with auto focus speed as well. Just because Cannon does not have alternatives to native RF lenses its not fair to use a cheaper older lens on the Sony for comparison test like this. The true performance of Sony comes through with the G master lenses the 35mm and the new 50mm will outdo the canon in image quality, and someone in the comment mentioned about adapting EF glass that affects image quality and auto focus negatively. Another downside i found on the Canon when it comes to still images is that its battery and heating problems will be an issue when shooting continuous auto focus for wild life not to mention the poor performance of adapted glass. Over all if you could do this again with the new 50mm G Master I am sure the results will be different.

On the R5 set the viewfinder / screen exposure simulation to off and it will show a decent view under normal slightly dim studio modelling lights . You actually get an even brighter view than using a traditional SLR . And it focuses perfectly on models eye.
And if the camera is tripod’d you can tilt screen so you can see it easily and have communication with the model , whist sitting or standing more comfortably than always peering through the OVF .
That’s is much less tiring when shooting all day , and is brilliant .

I do not own RF glass, but have EF. I've been going back and forth in regards to keeping my glass and getting an adapter and switching to R5 OR simply just selling all of my gear and switching to Sony. With the EF adaptor the EF lenses work perfectly , in fact better than on a 5d mkIV as it’s focusing off the sensor .
AF is amazing on R5 , it’s a huge upgrade compared to 5d mkIV . It just nails every portrait perfectly . You have to do a bit of testing to learn how the eye flux likes to work . Once you understand that it’s perfect.
Just did a fashion shoot 2500 shots all in focus .. never saw even 1/2 of that on my 5d mkIV .
Speeds up your workflow not having to check every 5 shots that it’s getting the focus .
Weight wise , not a huge diffence with the adaptor and EF L primes , but the RF24-105 is pretty light and well built and sharp enough for a gp lens. But the other non L rf lenses are nice and small and light and decent quality .

I think, the A7RIV was a bad upgrade from the A7RIII. It was to early, the ISO performance can't keep up with the RIII and the buffering is a mess and it opens up a huge hole in the line up, because when the A7RIII is gone, there is no camera with that 40mpix pixel count left an we end with 24-61mpix, what is stupid. 61mpix is just to much, to be really versataile, the RIII was and is a beast in this point. They should have bring the A7RIV as an A9R.
The R5 is also just 45mpix and I think, that was a good choice by Canon.

Yes, true it is ergonomically behind which is sorted with a battery grip but the price is now great plus choices of great glass is huge now. Many make the mistake by comparing the a7iii with this camera.... it is a totally different animal. I actually do own the a7riv and the a9 but still suggest to others getting an a9.... you won’t regret it.

This is a nice review as is your basic recommendation to stay with the lens system you are invested in. Based on several torture tests, The Canon R5 overheating video issues seem to be virtually eliminated with firmware 1.6. Personally, I find that used EF L glass, with an adapter, exceeds many third party lens at a relatively modest cost. In my view, used EF lens make the lack of third party lens availability for Canon RF is perhaps a bit overblown. Canon is probably doing this to recover some of their R&D costs as well as to ensure they receiver proper right to use payments from other manufacturers. Chinese manufacturers were starting to produce non sanctioned lens for the RF mount and this approach has damaged many legitimate companies in many industries because legitimate R&D efforts and related costs are basically stolen. I personally believe Canon will open up their technology to legitimate third party lens manufacturers, once they negotiate reasonable terms.

The other reason is you just read the big letters from the web, "Canon R5 overheats", and without reading the small letters... you just followed the stream.

Anyway... this was a stain on your reviewer path, with no need for that.

The Canon R5 is a nice camera, but all the new lenses are so big and heavy and expensive. Sony has a new A9X or R or lll coming out pretty soon, with a rumored 50mp, A9ll focusing which is better than the A7r 4. the A7s lll view finder, and 8k. if rumors are true it will be an amazing camera. personally I have had enough of the huge glass, I like lenses like the new Sigma 85 art at 630g, and the Sony Zeiss 55 f1.8. the Sony 135 f1.8. and if I want shallow DOF I am ok with f1.4 as apposed to f1.2 if I am saving allot of weight. and Sony having 3rd party lens options make a big difference giving you allot more affordable lens choices. hopefully Sigma, Tamron and Samyang will start making lenses for Canon and Nikon soon.

All very good points. I agree with you on going for lighter weight lenses!

The Canon lens is especially much better than the Zeiss Planar 50mm F / 1.4. The Zeiss is certainly good but it came out in 2015 or 2016 and the RF 50mm F / 1.2 is very recent and fabulous.
The R5 is equipped with a low-pass filter which means that we necessarily have a sharpness loss compared to a sensor that is not equipped with it.
As regards noise and sharpness, comparing the images of the R5 and the A7rIV while their sensors don't have the same resolution puts the Sony at a disadvantage. To compare honestly, it would be necessary to resize the images of the R5 to 61 megapixels

Can't deny Canon has done a great job with the R5/R6 cameras & if your shooting wildlife it might be the way to go if you can live with the F11 lens. You have to keep in mind though , The Sony 7R4 came out what, 2-3 years ago & has been down to $3k for a few months now. Your gonna get more noise out of the Sony, it has almost 25% more pixels. Add Topaz DeNoise to your post work & you will get clean pics a lot higher than ISO 6400. Tuff choice, tuff choice. Truth be told, you would be happy with either you came home with. The tech just keeps getting better & better. When do you say, how much more do I really need. Really!

How does the Canon sensor do in the Dxo ratings?

To quote google, "the Canon EOS R5 has a highly responsive sensor. Its score places it in 16th position in our database of full-frame and MF sensors overall; in 14th place for full-frame 35mm cameras; and in 1st place for Canon sensors"

The Sony lens is pretty old, bad focusing, same thing with Jared doing this test, he has used a 85mm GM and this is also a slow lens in this regard.
