  • Here are a couple of tutorials that I used to guide me through the process:
    www.instructables.com/id/DIY-O...
    www.instructables.com/id/Light...
I should note that I broke several bulb before I successfully managed to remove the metal end cap and the insides. I also used sticky tack to attach the metal cap back to the bulb. This isn't a permanent method, however it works fine if you don't mind readjusting or replacing the tack when you fill it up.
This is potentially a very tedious project but if you keep at it its well worth the work.

Hmm, It might be that the wick is too long so the material is burning more than it should. Or it could be the wrong size. I had to make a few of them of different thicknesses before I found one that worked. I'm not sure why that matters but it did. Other than that I'm not sure what it could be.
Thats awesome you made some though. I hope everything else went smoothly!

Thanks Ashton. I was actually going to use a jones cap as well but the threads didn't match up so i couldn't do it...
Mine is pretty smoke free, though. I'm not sure what could be causing it but I'm wondering if its your wick that is burning and causing the smoke. How often do you have to pull it out? The thickness and material have a really big influence on how it performs. Maybe even how you make it. Some of the wicks I experimented with definitely burned down really fast.

Are you referring to the efficiency of the oil being burned? Or making the bulb?
The bulb was really cheap, so it is if you have the patience to make it. I'm not sure about the efficiency though.

I use paraffin lamp oil. I'm not sure if you can use rubbing alcohol. It would certainly burn but my concern would be with fumes. Alcohol emits vapors I believe and those could be potentially dangerous if exposed to the flame. But dont quote me on that, do some research online.

The hardest part was getting the metal off actually. Then its just a matter of breaking the inside. But it is a very tedious project.

I didn't mention it in the video but it is held on by a bunch of sticky tack in the base of the wood ring. You can see the white at the bottom a couple of times. Its very stuck on there. I'm pretty sure you could shake it and nothing would happen.

Just built a set of these - but when I light them, they burn with a very black smoke... suggestions?

The wick im using is a real one (not home made) and ive adjusted the length to where the wick is barely peaking out and the flame is super small, and its still smoking.
Could it be the type of fuel I'm using? It's clear lamp oil (but Kerosene based)

you dont need to buy special oil. you can use cooking oil. same result, last longer, cost less and easily found.

It looks unstable... If it falls on the ground, wouldn't it just be like a little molotov coctail? In your house?

Nah the flow of oil would just distinguish the flame. Not ignite.

What if you spill the oil or what if the oil touches the flame?
