You could also buy parts from Lehman's to make your own lamps. Or you could build your own wick stand and use Hemp string that you purchase at Lowe's or Home Depot or cotton wicks and make it 100% custom made. - Навчання та стиль

I made some home made versions of these and lit my off grid house with a baker's dozen of them. Corn oil or canola/rape seed oil works better (less odor) and put them into a salsa jar works great. Coil some wire around a gutter spike and then put 3/8 inch all natural twine in place of the wicking they have there and put off more light. I could read late at night with three of them. One element like that one in a bowl of oil in the bathroom lasted all night as a night light. These are great, but Lehman's costs too much.
I have made these, and any oil will work! Great video to put out.. I never throw out old oil.. I save it for this very reason!
I kept a vegi oil lamp burning in my room as a kid for about 6 months. they are totally safe if knocked over in an indoor environment. the only problem is they make one heck of a mess and don't completely clean out of cloth materials like carpet and upholstery. its important to note that in the bible whenever they reference a lamp they are probably talking about olive oil. this is nothing new under the sun :) thanx for the reminder keep it up

This is an awesome way to use up oils that have gone rancid!!!
I had bought too big a size of olive oil last spring and a heat wave did it in! Rancid oil of any sort is bad for our health. This is a nifty way to find a use for it and be happy about not wasting, which is better for the planet all the way around!

thats great I hear they are easy to make. This is just one version of them and their are many different oils that can be burned as well.
No, olive oil won't really burn due to its flash point. In fact if you wanted to put out the flame of the wick you could splash some olive oil on the flame inside the jar and put the flame out. That is one of the benefits of using vegetable oil for a lamp over using say kerosene.

In the comments three months ago whupdup is wrong to say that rubbing alcohol is a good fuel for these type of lamps. It would be dangerous to use rubbing alcohol because the amount of air allowed in by the open topped glass jar would allow the flame given off by the wick to quickly ignite the pool of alcohol in the glass jar. The high heat would crack the glass jar spilling the burning alcohol and causing a fire.

I know this has nothing to do with the actual video but is that the Magpul MOE foliage green kit on your AR? I've been thinking about getting that for my AR but wanted to know how it compares in color to OD green, which is what I was originally going to do but since OD is out of stock everywhere, I'm thinking about going with FDE OR FG. Thanks!

Hey I did this with a beer bottle and a lid type thing I got from Hobby Lobby. Works pretty good, but my wick keeps burning down to the nub. Any ideas?

can we use used oil? Like from fast food restaurants?
I tried this, using an old tuna can filled with rocks and a cotton wick sticking out a tiny bit. It smoked terribly, no matter what I did. There was no breeze and the wick was really short. Did you notice yours smoking?
If you didn't have the handle, wouldn't the glass be too hot to touch?

What's the burn time? How many ml for minutes/hours? At the end of the video you mentioned the instructions said the amount you poured should be good for 20hrs but that sounds rather long. Have you or any other preppers done any real life comparison testing for yourselves?

Do you know how much olive oil cost? I would only use it in a last resort. Way too expensive.
Rubbing alchohol is good fuel for these types of lamps, also, cotton products are the best wicks

My dollar tree has those handled jars (for a buck), and winding the metal wick coil is tricky, but it can be done, as long as you copy the height and number of turns pretty closely. Dollar Tree also carries an olive oil blend, also for a buck. . I was loving this video, until you got to the "burning bear fat" part! No, do not burn the bear!
Nice kit. If you wanted to make a floating wick I made them out of cork and a paper clip for oil candles with a twine wick And olive oil as the fuel

It would be good if you installed it the right way and put the wire over the side of the
jar like it should be, so you can pour some oil in the jar.

It would be smart if you didn't actually use olive oil and used plain vegetable oil.
Corn oil and canola/rape seed oil is cheaper and has less smell. I used them to light my off grid house a couple years back. You're right.
Vegetable oil works very well but it does smoke a tad bit more and it does have an odor. Olive oil tends to burn cleaner and very little odor. I burn both and I am pleased with the results of all my homemade lanterns.
I had the opposite experience with smell. I do agree that it will smoke a little, but you can adjust the wick down enough not to see it and all you get is a bit of buildup on walls and such.
Yea, I just cleaned out the one with vegetable oil and it was a challenge. I just say go with what works for you. I personally got sick of the Kerosene odor. These are a lot safer to handle I think they work just as good. I've since built several Lanterns from different size jars and so far they all work great! I may post one.
