Saturday mornings are the best with LSC!
I totally agree
Got my breakfast and LSC, kids have cartoons.
Anytime of day of night 😉
If by that you mean it's fun to point and laugh, then I agree!
a few things I leanred from Alex watching this,
1.Keep a child like enthusiasm for the cars or things you love.
2.Never give up.
3.Even though you get what you want in life, it doesnt mean it will always be perfect.
4. Small things can lead to big problems.
5. Always think a little out the box.
6. Experience helps, some mechanics would have never thought of, or checked that oilpump bypass valve.
Don't forget to ignore the recording studio, as they will put random stuff on your plate to throw you off balance. Stay focused!
😅😮 8:08

8. No project can be finished without Mercedes Sunroof Lube
Oil is practically incompressible, so essentially you had an unregulated hydraulic pump. The answer to, "How high will it go?" is: until something breaks. I highly suspect oil filters are specifically engineered to fail before something more expensive fails.
Your video captures the essence of, "real mechanic stuff!" Love it!
Yeah... but when the oil filter fails, everything else fails next moment 🤯
Alex is definitely an enthusiastic and positive person. I enjoy watching because of this calm & and positive perspective, especially when dealing with the Murphys law principal.
Alex always maintains a great attitude, and his diagnostic skills are 2nd to none!
I like the videos for many of the great perceptions and the unwillingness to quit the project! You have a great way of bringing the viewer along with you to finalize the repairs. Thank you!! Chad
What a good lesson for anyone on persistence and using logic to problem solve. And not a single curse when you smashed your hand! Well done! Take note, this guy is a class act.
I was working on my 1989 Ford Falcon ((Australia) in my garage - then a friend of my housemate came in and started talking about what I was doing
I didn’t like the guy. Then I heard a metallic sound where he was standing and he walked off
I didn’t know at the time but he’d either mistakenly or on purpose knocked a large butterfly screw into my intake manifold
Later that day I went for a drive and the car on a hard turn started making a horrible sound
The butterfly screw had entered the intake port, then into the cylinder onto the piston - it smashed all the valves and cost me 6 weeks wages to fix
I knew he’d caused it so when we were having a party during a huge storm I grabbed his car keys and went outside and opened all of his windows and his sunroof
It rained all night and when he came out in the morning he was shocked - puddles in the floor of his car
Paybacks a bitch 😂
dang was the butterfly screw already loose? If he walked away right after tossin that screw into the intake, i'd say he did it on purpose@@eldraino9933
The SVT Lightning had extremely high cold oil pressure issues that actually exploded the oil filter in a Michigan winter. They went with a 0w-20 oil to manage the terribly high very cold start oil pressure. You should make sure you're not exacerbating the issue with too thick of an oil for the cold winter temperatures. You're killing it Alex! Keep it up friend.
The 0w20 was a cafe issue. Ford trying to get the last bit of mpg from the motor. Most swap to 10/30 and I know of one Terminator specific builder that specs automotive 15/40 for all 4V motors. SVTPerformance forums are a wealth of knowledge for the 4V. I have had one since 2004.
If you need a new trans by any chance (hopefully not) maybe you can swap a manual transmission 😉that would be awesome
@@Chris-de4kmno sir leave it auto after all that work, get a build transmission 🤣
If it was Easy Alex, I'd be doing it! I SEE THE LIGHT!!!!
The 4v stroker I just built and dropped on my channel has boundary opg’s and a 8qt pan. On my gauge it stars at 95psi cold then goes down to 25psi when at temp. What you’re seeing there is perfect. After building and working on hundreds of mod engines I’ve never seen a stuck pressure release. Great diagnostic skills buddy 💪.
My grandpa would always say "if you didn't have bad luck, you'd have no kinda luck at all!" Man alive Alex, youre swimming in the bad luck 😅 let's hope things turn around!
So true, Born under a bad sign by Cream
Pat Travers does an excellent cover of Born under a Bad Sign.
@@IKnewMickeyI’ll check it out 👍
Depends on how you look at things, bad luck = good luck content lol
@@beezlebub3955 didn't know I could hear those words with Eric claptons guitar blessing my ears at the same time. I'll have to check that out!
That was an amazing amount of logic, perseverance, luck, and skill! I am thrilled that it all worked out...and now I need a nap!
You're one solid guy, fighting the Ford curse and never giving up. There's a lot to be said for that level of dedication. I hope you get everything you want from your projects.
Probably one of the best episodes of Alex and Max… maybe the best! 😅 Drama, humor, real pro mechanics, oil and cursed engine…
I knew you where a master in mechanics but this tops everything, you are a grand master
This is a perfect example of good luck and bad luck when working with cars and how being intelligent, patient, and thinking outside the box can save you. Kudos
That looks like a Ford fuel line retainer clip, probably from the factory fuel lines on the other car that engine was out of. So glad you have it mostly all figured out, many would have given up long ago with all the problems this car has given you.
Saw that as well - looks like the OEM fuel line retainer clip. I see the current setup is AN fittings.
Or headlights clips
"I hate this car".....
we've all been with you on that one, brother.
What a crazy ride on this one. But seriously on a human side that's a great example of patience, passion, and hard work. With that kind of person we build a good world to live ! Good job Alex
You're patience is admirable Alex, I'd have been seriously contemplating my life choices at that point with the filters blowing out, good thing you had that parts engine to run to
I am happy for you Alex , don't give up you're a PRO!
Nice job saving this Cobra..but you really should've converted it back to a 5 speed as it came from the factory...it would have been a much more reliable build(and probably cheaper in the long run) since you could use all the correct harnesses and computers...not to mention that a manual transmission Mustang is worth more than an automatic.
Have seen so many problems from those injector adapter plugs, honestly save yourself a headache and just change the plugs to suit!
What a rollercoaster video, feel for you Alex. Great job diagnosing and fixing the issues.
That is a crazy thing to see in an engine. Glad you got it sorted.
Alex. Those are some amazing diagnostic skills you have. I am in total awe. Thanks for yet again showing us what logic, reasoning and perseverance does. Just amazing.
Huge relief ! So happy you sorted it 🤗
If you didn't have these challenges the video wouldn't be a tenth as good! You're knowlege, persistence and trouble shooting thought process is admirable. Well done Alex!
What's your cold start oil pressure and what kind of car/truck?
Finding 0psi on a several digit fresh twin turbo build after 300 miles was fantastic 🤦
But it was reading 60 psi cold start dropping to around 20 psi on warm idle
Hi I’m a big fan love the cobra btw beautiful car ❤
70 psi on a cold start on the daily. It's a focus st. Warm idle it's 10psi.
45 lbs on a ls1 vette
Around 55psi cold start in 2015 ram 1500, 5.7
The fact that you know how to repair an internal combustion engine makes you more intelligent than 99% of people who have a College Doctorate degree in front of their name.
This is a man who has no idea what he is talking about.
I don’t believe it’s a pissing competition. Can’t we just agree he’s very smart and teaches us a lot and we appreciate the hard work his team and he himself put in to bring us that at our fingertips?
Somebody got butthurt they went through a bunch of schooling😂😂
I’ll agree but these four valves we build are also a different animal. The stroker I just built is a pain.
Ummmm yea no
Idk if its just me, but this channel has had kind of a sad or kinda off vibe the past few months? Maybe its just me!!!! Just sayin hope all is well Alex!!! :)
Nah man it’s just the life of being a mechanic there’s up”s and a whole lot of downs especially when it comes to performance stuff but I hope all is well with Alex too!!🤟🏻
Great work getting all those imposing problems sorted out OK! Thanks for a good comprehensive video, Alex!
As always great rescue Alex! And the Mercedes sunroof grease 😂😂👍🏻I love it ! Can’t have a video without it !
Hey Alex, can I suggest getting a bunch of locking medical forceps for your toolbox? They are very cheap, great for reaching into small areas, and they lock closed on whatever you are trying to fish out. My wife got a bunch of them for her sculpting work, so I pinched a couple for my toolbox and they have been super useful over the years.
If noone else mentioned it, that clip was from the locking clip that held the factory ful line to the fuel rail. Was probably trapped in the intake for years before it made its way in there. Love your channel!
Why you lying doh?
You've got to be one of the best mechanics.! If I was in Chicago I would definitely go to you and ask any questions I would have cuz you're very knowledgeable you're a great guy couldn't say enough great things about you Alex keep up the great videos your phenomenal to watch appreciate all your knowledge and you sharing everything with us......
This is why I love your videos they are true and not filled with nonsense. I feel your frustration and pain Alex. Keep it up man by far best true car channel.
Love it.
Beeeeennnnnnffffffffffffffffff mate
Another great video man! I feel your pain so much when it comes to fixing one problem then having another completely unrelated problem come up! Perseverance!!
Something similar some years ago way out in the country in the middle of the night. The engine started to sound labored and I noticed the oil gauge was way beyond max of 100. A quick shutdown and after a pause a tentative restart and it was back to normal. A cautious long drive home and, the next morning found signs of a previously stuck oil relief valve complete with a tiny bit of grit. Be pleased it happened to you in the workshop and not on a dark country road.
I have a friende that had a VW golf 1998 that did the same thing with the oil filter at coldstart in the winter -10c.
The piston in the oil pump hade the same scaring as you have, we changed the complete pump and no more issues.
As stressful as this probably was for you it provided some great viewing content which is what your channel is all about. Excellent work, Sir, keep it coming 👍🏼👍🏼
I wish that when I was younger I would of learned to work on my own cars. Instead of fishing and chasing girls around I could of been learning how to work on cars. Now that I am in my 40's I just started to do my own work in the past couple years by watching and learning from people like Alex and a few others. I am not yet at the point where if my car breaks, that I can 100% fix it. I can do the do the small things like breaks and plugs and I did a starter once. 10 years ago I would of never of even thought about trying to do a starter or breaks. Thanks Alex!!
😂when you said you feel like someone's messing with you, i was thinking Peter 😅. Miss that guy. Keep up the work Alex
Snow bird here, 6:20 PM in Fla. Sat night, unbelievable how that clip got in there.
Sooo lucky, sounds like it could have been soo much worse. The rocker fell off when it did and didn't crush the alien clip and scrape up the walls. Then the Oil shoots up(and all over the place) and you have the other engine and able to salvage the spring and bypass from it. Also, replaced the computer so this video didn't have you opening up the transmission as you got it to shift out of first and second and into third. Let's hope your luck holds out and maybe recalibration with new tune will allow it to shift into fourth. Love watching you resolve issue after issue.
Ive said the exact same thing at some point in my hobby/ career with cars. "AM I BEING PUNKED" or "God are you testing me?" Your perseverance is admirable. Thankyou
Hello. You asked in the video where we live. I live 40 km north of Stockholm in Sweden. (You know, the Volvo country)
I'm definitely a car guy on about the same level as you, but you're better at the car's electricity.
I'm a bit like you in some ways. I have the same kind of feeling when something goes well, or badly. I feel when you are happy and everything is working as it should. You are talented and humble and tell stories in a good way.
You are my favorite on youtube right now. 👍👍👍
This is the pure definition of a true mechanic very inspiring
If I ever find myself losing my patience or losing my temper,I will remember this episode and practice self control. That was quite the episode. You are a real pro. Thanks for giving us such a good thing to look forward to and learn from.
The bet the guy who had that engine in his shop is still looking for that clip!
I love your channel, I have learned a ton about caring for cars, hell I bought my beloved cl550 because of this channel. But you have absolutely cured me of my desire to buy old cheap abandoned bucketlist cars. I used to live on marketplace shopping for "gems". I'm scared to death of it now.
That looks like a Ford headlight clip but I’m sure you are happy about the outcome. What a sigh of relief. Been there but nowhere at your skill level. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks
Great job diagnosing the oil pressure issue!
Oh my God it’s Alex Shamwow LSC
I want to say, I agree that something was wrong with this engine before you bought it, when you first got the new cobra engine, and I heard you crank it for the first time. I heard the motor galloping while riding the starter. If you Go back to your video of installing it and you can clearly hear a gallop, which usually means a cylinder down on compression
This was the most emotional mouth open while watching episode I’ve seen in a while! Holding my breath and glad everything worked out!
Alex, you're a true fighter. What a great lesson in not giving up, or giving in to despair. Or should I say, another great lesson, since this is not the first time. Congrats on your progress with this car.
99-01 cobras did have clips holding injectors from the factory. So it’s very possible that injector clip somehow found it’s way in when someone swapped the injectors. Great work as always Alex
Hi Alex what a roller coaster. So glad that clip didn't destroy your engine and great to see you get some good luck.
For this very reason I run an analog oil pressure Guage on my Subaru STi and yes on cold start it runs at 90psi and at normal operating temps it settles down to 30psi. Nice work on getting this machine up and running.
I've actually had valves hang open on serveral Ford mod engines, that had sat for a long time. The rocker falls out, then the piston contacts the valve. Luckily, I've only had one engine that had a bent valve! You got super lucky!
Wow Alex you have courage for sure ! I was like "no way it is possible!" To have a series of bad things (snags) happens in after the other. But the good part, it will be sorted out and not have to redo the engine again if it would happen on the highway or at the race track. Brilliant job Alex !
Is it wrong i enjoyed this episode despite alex's pain? I love the tech explaining on this channel. Most channels just tell you what they plan to do then show you when its done. Gets boring after a while. Alex takes you along for the ride and i love it.
Nice good work😊
Alex the patience you have with this cobra is incredible. Your the best i hope you can get it running right and shifting i have faith in you. So happy for you Alex sounds amazing!
That was one of the best videos yet! You really did give us a rollercoaster ride of how it actually really is as an auto mechanic dealing with weird problems like this! I was glued to the screen with this one!
Glad to see this thing running finally. Really looking forward to the detail video and payoff of a trouble free drive.
Very interesting episode, some of the car youtubers over there have no idea about fixing cars mechanically and that's is what I like from this channel. Finally the Cobra is Live!
The oil pressure relief valve is an Italian thing. I had a 67' VW bug that I installed a high flow oil pump on. It blew the first oil filter I put on it across my garage. I stopped in at my local VW performance shop and they recommend I replace the oil pressure relief valve and spring. It was an easy replacement being accessed from the case itself. Chalk it up to Italian luck :)
You are a great analyst and mechanic. The problems that you were having and the excitement generating new issues were enough to discourage the best of us. Amazing job and I am excited for the next video.
Right Alex, I'm watching this at 2330 on Sunday 3rd March in Tenby, South West Wales UK. Love the videos, keep them coming!
Thanks brother!
Man there’s is another UA-camr that had the same problem on his svt mustang, and he fixed his but he didn’t have injected clip problem. But now he has his amg he’s diagnosing limp mode, and some one commented recommending him contacting you because of you expertise on Mercedes. I’ll have find his UA-cam page and put in comments. Yo guys seem like y’all have similar taste in vehicles. Always enjoy your content keep it up.
Found him Chris Sullivan his channel is his name
i totally remember that mustang back in the day and the article. Nostalgia . You're trouble shooting and finding the smallest thing that can be an issues is unmatched. You never really need to bring anyone in unlike some others on youtube which have full teams if they need them. Respect.
No doubt, but let's get some more OJ on the channel
It’s 11:30 in the morning in Bangkok. Just shaking the cobwebs out of my head after last night. Cheers!
Alex, your troubleshooting abilities never cease to amaze me. Amazing work on this one! Can't wait to see it cleaned up!
What a cool gig to work on your dream cars and have thousands of fans cheering you on! Nice work Alex and co!
It's 10.30am on Sunday morning here in the UK. Great job finding that rouge clip.
Alex. Your tenaciousness is inspiring.
Awesome content I was thinking this car need an exorcism of sorts never heard of such oddities, other then the engine that had water damage by the scrap yard and it totaled the engine what a Mercedes I think it was. The oil pump great trouble shooting skill, locating the scratches on the valve - good call and fix. Alex you are one incredible car tech. Keep after it lets see this car to complete restoration.
Wow, why do you tense me out like this?! lol Glad you got that oil situation solved. That spring that you took out of the rebuilt looked just a tad shorter than the bad engine spring. And it seemed to work along with that other part (or two or three....) you salvaged from the bad one. One smart engine guy you are.
FYI when filling the coolant, remove the downward tube off of the bridge and backfill it there. Usually there is an access port on the factory bridge. As far as pressure, my testing with my Mach/Cobra 4v mashup, I was seeing about 90 psi running it hard. I believe it was around 80 at startup. Ive video somewhere Id have to review.
Watching your video at 2am right now just like you guessed and can’t sleep wish I could but insomnia gets the best of me a lot of the time… Best of luck on the rest of your builds because you helped me with mine and gave me tips that made my car be able to run and drive again now I actually have a means of transportation again! Really appreciate you…
I just love your channel, watching brings me so much joy , the struggles, the victories, all the same things that we all go through, bless you brother, you show us all how to do it, Thank you!!!
Good to see you stay motivated and get to the bottom of any issues that come up.
My son bought a 2008 F150 with the infamous 5.4L 3v engine… I was lucky (?) enough to install new cam phasers, cam followers, lifters, complete timing set and hi-flow oil pump… truck ran really well for about 60k miles until the transmission broke and wouldn’t shift beyond second gear… good to see someone as persistent as I was… good job!!
Reminds me of my first sports car, 1971 Fiat 124 Sport Spider. Great car, would run, the stop cold. All looked right. Vexing for two days.
Found one wire, routed over the valve cover, had a bare spot; it was grounding out. I bit of electrical tape and re-routing and she purred once more.
Alex you are so lucky to be so mechanically inclined.. I would be scare to remove any part with so many parts connected especially without a shop or lift.
In HS I was in auto shop replacing a clamp on a vacuum line on my ‘86 GT. A classmate “helped” me remove it when I wasn’t around and dropped it in the intake. I replaced the clamp never knowing what happened to the old one. When I started my car it went through the valves and into a cylinder. I had one round score mark and a bunch of crescent scars on top of the piston and all over the combustion chamber on the head. This totally brought back memories….
Your diagnostic skills are insane, I learn so much from these videos
I sure learned a lot by watching you wrench on these cars! Thanks so much Alex. I have a 2001 Roush Stage 3 that is a blast. 32,562 original miles on the clock.
Hi Alex. You are so awesome. I’ve watched all your videos since you almost started and now it’s a ritual for me. Every Sunday morning I make myself a cup of coffee and watch your video. You’re the best mister. I wish I can visit you someday. Take care body.
Hello, that looked like a clip from the LT1 fuel injectors, awesome diagnostics. Glad it worked in your favor.
Unbelievably competent engineer!! 👍👍👍👍
Wow that thing sounds mean. Respect for your perceverence!
As a side note, that slick funnel you're using to fill the cooling system does not work at high altitude! At sea level water boils at 212 deg. while a t-stat usually opens around 195-205 deg. so any air is simply purged. But at say, 7,000-7500 ft., water boils around 198 deg. So it can boil before the t-stat opens. Believe me, it makes a big mess!
My lightning cold start oil pressure is usually 70-75psi and lowers to 35. Glad you found the problem
Im happy for you i know how long youve been fighting this car so its nice to see it move on the rd under its own power. Congrats my guy🎉
With the lack of realible mechanics especially where I live.We don’t have older vehicles because they charge way to much to fix and if you have a misfire good luck.glad your showing us how to do stuff on vehicles because this day in age isn’t Like how it was 30 years ago.
Pretty bizarre foreign body you found there! Your scope paid for itself on this fix alone. Kudos for having at least 2 redundancies for securing that clip from falling into the cylinder! As a vet, I find it's always fun, but can be nerve-wracking, to open up a dog to see what strange thing(s) it ate that have obstructed its bowel. Same process for both of us: diagnose it, find it, get it out of there and puts things back together. Great video, Alex!
Omg Alex , this was one of the best yet !!! I felt terrible when I started watching then the valve stuck open , then the fix !!! Yessssss !!! Then the oil pressure , Noooooo !!!! Then the fix , Yesssssss !!! Then 4 th gear , Noooooooo !!!! I can’t take it !! LOL Thanks brother !!! Keep it up …….
Nice job Alex way to stick with it can't wait to see this car fully sorted out you rock
Your vids are so very good and informative and your never say die mantra serves you so well especially when you encounter problems that never come up for anyone else. Keep ‘em coming!!
For future endeavors I would suggest the Superior Solutions - Bench Buddy brushes to clean up the bore for that that oil regulator spool.
