When I watched Voyager again when I was a bit older than when it first came out, that's when I realized Captain Janeway was my parallel universe soulmate. Our love for coffee unites us.
I like to imagine the production crew didn't tell Ms Mulgrew about what was in that pot, hence her reaction to the "better than coffee" substitute being genuine
I will never get tired of Janeway's horrified reaction to Neelix's "better than coffee", but just saying "coffee black" really leaves out way too much information. Is is a dark, medium, or light roast? Was it dripped, percolated, pressed? What species of beans were used, how coarse or fine were the beans? What temperature was the water? I bet Janeway pre-programmed her settings to be the default for "coffee black"
That makes sense. The replicator must have dozens (at least) of recipes for coffee. If the computer can recognize who is giving command codes for self-destruct certainly it cam recognize who wants coffee. Janeway may have programmed a personalized selection.
She also didn't specify whether it should be hot or not (there is iced coffee, after all), whereas Picard would always say, "Tea, Earl Grey, hot." Personally, I think the replicators were just all scared shitless of her and didn't risk giving her any backtalk about her vague instructions.
Oh most definitely yes! I must admit that coffee helped me to make it through two deployments to Iraq and one to Afghanistan, not to mention Dessert Storm and Fiery Virgil...and being stuck in LA Ex for fourteen hours!
