I take offense as a Black American when people say I don't know where I came from. My family has been in American for 400 plus years. That is where we are from. Nobody questions Jamaican or other Latin people culture or say they don't know where they come from, the slave ships went there too, but why are we not allowed to have a culture and say we are American like Jamaicans and Brazilian?

I have literally been argued with by African people from the continent on this. My family is indigenous, African and European ancestry. U can't pull out one bloodline. But I still identify only as the African part. We made all black people ONE in America. And we used all our ancestries to create our own culture. One of the biggest is hip hop and it's worldwide! We know exactly who we are and I'm proud of what we created 🖤

MM is in her 40's!! Yes she can dress how she wants when she is home or going locally. BUT I believe that when anyone travels they should dress in that country's culture!!! From what I have seen Nigerian women cover themselves and don't show a lot of skin! As a visitor there, that is how MM should have dressed also. The Nigerian women don't care who she is or who she thinks she is, to them that was disgraceful and they have a right to their opinion. Princess Catherine would NOT have gone there and dressed like that, as she has more respect for another country! MM could learn a lot from Princess Catherine! But that will never happen . . .

She wasn't talking down. Mostly talking her own nation's women's culture. Sad about Nigeria, is the ratio of very poor people being so high. And just researching my minute amount of Nigerian DNA, sad to find the history of Barbados, where Nigerian slaves were buried in mass graves, worked to death in sugarcane fields by the Dutch/German owners there. My relative has the "slave owner" attached to his genealogy "hints." But it's really his ancestors that should have this (they are also on my tree). My US ancestor came here before the USA was a nation, to the New York area. He came here with his Nigerian wife (or gf he married), most likely as it was too much for him, the family he came from, and what they were doing.

    Sister Fumi, thank you.
You are always eloquent and kind.
As for the First Lady, she is an international leader who is a Black woman. Our message right now is to Protect Black Women, Protect Black Girls. How could she forget that as an international leader? Her words are being documented for the future.
If she needed to critique Meaghan or assess her clothing she should have done it discreetly behind the scenes and to the right channels for future occasions.
As Black Americans, it was hurtful and disappointing that an international Black leader would spout gutter talking points. Cause number 1, we know who are. We are proud Black Americans and we are proud of the accomplishments of our ancestors to hold our country accountable and propel it into a thriving and winning nation. Number 2, we are Black women, we are to show a unified front when in public. No excuses. Too much is at risk. Lives, nations, freedoms, futures are at risk because we are building great nations.
As Black women, the world is looking at all of us and Black leaders have to be extra careful to be perfect. Yes, we have to be perfect. That is how much pressure is on us to help our people, build our nations.
God help us to be more considerate in the future. God help our leaders to protect Black women and Black girls.

@@natalia_22274Oh please! Have you heard so-called American leaders and the filth that spews out of their mouths. Much more, the hateful filth that has spewed out of most black Americans mouths when speaking about Africans. But many are silent with other groups, because they fell inferior to them. I’ve even heard many of them agree with other groups, especially non-black groups, when they are being bashed! They are that desperate for acceptance from them and they keep getting rejected.
They hate Africans more than any group, because too many of them hate themselves and try to separate themselves from Africa by claiming a new ancestry every 5 to 10 years. First it’s ancient Egypt (they want to argue it’s in Africa, while bashing Africans, those confused fools), then the ancient Israelites, and then now they’re trying to strip Native-Americans of their identity by claiming to be indigenous to the Americas. Like WHAT?!?! 😝🥴🤭
They then turn around and say Africans hate them. So evil and twisted, that mentality and behavior. Most of you yourselves as AAs are extremely divided due to self-hatred. It’s just as well, if you deny and reject yourselves and your identity as Africans that have been in America for varying numbers of centuries, you will most certainly reject yourselves, and it’s been happening for many decades. I’ve seen countless UA-cam videos of black American men disparaging black women and vice versa, and a shameful number of black women desperately throwing themselves at white men and putting white men on a pedestal, when most of them don’t want black women as they are the main oppressive group against black people worldwide. Imagine, WHITE MEN OF ALL PEOPLE after all that you claim to have gone through and still go through at the hands of those very people.

I am an American Nigerian. Mother is Black American and Father is Nigerian. I realized that my roots are mostly American. My family has been traced to the US in the 1780's. Nigeria has been a colonized British-created country since 1914 and Independent since 1960. I am tired of people questioning where I am from and who I am. I graduated from a Historically Black College and University that had Nigerian professors who would question our roots. I had to educate them that while I am not Indigenous to the Americas my people have been here for centuries and Black American Culture has been consumed around the whole world. Yet, we always get the most pushback and negativity. It is tiresome.

THIS TOPIC RIGHT HERE FUMII!!! I just saw a similar topic about Nigerians in particular coming with this type of slick talk. The snide remarks don'tgo unnoticed because we r also of African descent. We know how we do. I don't want to paint a whole country in that way but I've been seeing an uptick in this kind of offhand comments coming from that country. It used to be people from East Africa doing this under their breathe in their language. We aren't stupid and know when someone is talking down on us. It's especially hurtful because of the history of WHY black people in America wouldn't know their African tribal roots. It's backhanded slights and in America we have done so much to fight for EVERYONES rights in America. The thing that I'm most proud of is that black Americans UNITED on all shades or mixes of African blood to be apart of the black community. Do we still joke on each other's complexions out of ignorance? Absolutely. It's not right. But we know we are ALL one people. But even just down the street in a beautiful community where there's many Nigerians, Ghanaians, etc. I have 1st hand witnessed these backbiting remarks. Trying to put us down for not being able to identify with tribes from Africa. But blatantly overlooking the FACT that the only reason AFRICANS have any rights in the USA was because of MLK's civil rights movement. My own mother grew up in segregation!!! Not able to go to beaches, schools, cities because she was black. It's a slap in the face and I'm wondering exactly where this nastiness is coming from. Is it because these people leave Nigeria and now feel some sense of superiority? I truly am trying to understand because we need to be UNITED. Love and respect to all. I still love Nigeria and Africans. There's many layers to this and I'm so glad that you have a platform to have the discussion tactfully. You don't need to apologize Fumi because u didn't say it. TonyaTKO made a video on many talking points. A Nigerian sis did a reply Sareh Donald I think.

Just because Nigerians know their history does not make them superior to American blacks. We too have roots. But just knowing your exact ancestry does not make one superior. African nations should embrace us instead of looking down on us . We are victims of the slave trade, but we are Victorious because we overcame the most adverse conditions and created our own culture here in the USA. We are proud of our culture here as well as the journey it took to get here. Our African brothers and sisters should embrace us rather than disparage us. We are Victors!

    • @ML-ni1tk
      @ML-ni1tk Місяць тому +8

Thank you for raising this. As an African, I recognize that many of us may not fully consider the struggles AAs have endured in building America. The access POC have today is largely due to their efforts. From my perspective, outside perceptions of AA culture are heavily influenced by media. America's a melting pot, but the most prominent cultures we see are white and black, particularly in music, entertainment, and politics. Depending on the media one consumes, their viewpoint on a specific culture is shaped. As outsiders, we often see mainly entertainment and music. This relates to the First Lady's statement. Unfortunately, some (not all) of AA culture portrayed in music and entertainment doesn't align with many African morals, especially regarding clothing and language. Again, this isn't all AA culture is, and all cultures have these diversities. However, these aspects are often what's pushed out to the world and hold significant influence. This is where I believe people like the First Lady and the African women you met come in. They strive to combat this influence to protect the younger generation, particularly regarding attire. While I'm not suggesting revealing clothing defines AA culture, it's heavily promoted in media. Most people likely aren't familiar with AA activists and leaders. Nonetheless, criticizing AA culture, especially from fellow Africans, is still disrespectful. It's even more hurtful coming from within the Black community. It's similar to how media portrays Africa as poor, uneducated, and criminal, leading to unfair treatment abroad, even from some AAs. Moving forward, fostering mutual respect and understanding is key. We need to acknowledge the complexities within each culture and stand united despite minor disagreements.

FL knew exactly what she was saying about Meghan and black American women. I am so disappointed and offended by her comments. I am proud and know who I am and aksi know my roots. We don't need FL to put American black culture down just to lift Nigeria culture up. Jennifer Lopez has nothing to do with her condemnation of black American culture. I'm praying the FL will forgive her daughter nakedness in America and stop blaming black American actors and women.

I want my dollars to go to my people here on the continent and let me start by saying, I love Nigerians, all my friends are Nigerians and we work together and we get along great. Hello Ms. Fumi, as a Black, German, Cherokee woman, it hurts to hear that we cannot get along and appreciate each other’s differences. As a young girl I was told I was not black enough, white enough and not acceptable by the indigenous nation. I’ve persevered and overcome all of the unmentionable name calling, judgments, etc. I appreciate the people of the planet Earth. When I visit a different culture, I do my best to “do as the natives” in recognition and honor of where ever I am. When I went to Hawai’i, I learned some Hawaiian customs and language. When I go to France, I will do the same. If I ever get the opportunity to visit an Africa country, I would do the same. Please be kind to me. I do know who I am, where I come from and where some of my ancestors came from. Honor me as I honor you. Let’s build each other up. Thank you Ms. Fumi for the apology, kindness, and always being so authentic. You are a fine example of a lady. You lift me up and make me want to be a better lady each day. I hope for the opportunity to meet you in person one day. Blessings 🙏🏽❤️

There are many problems in Nigeria that the first lady could have spoken about, the statement she made could have been done without the mention of anyone or any place. The statement was distasteful and not coined properly, she left it open to misunderstanding, she asked why did Meghan come here, after talking about Hollywood actresses and it's not the met gala. I had to listen several times before I understood what she was trying to say!!! She is aware of the abuse Meghan is going through, so she should have been more careful in her speech. Girls in Nigeria that can't afford sanitaries , she need to address those things instead of focusing on clothes, next time she needs to be careful about her words!!!!

Hi Fumi: it’s auntie Wanda from New Jersey, I’ll be 73 this year and I have learned we have knuckleheads in every culture and every country, religion, etc. you must have the bad to appreciate the good, otherwise how would we know the difference. That being said: When it’s time for a thing to happen Our Great Father brings it to light. I think it would be a great platform for you to bridge the gap between Black African Americans and Africans from other countries together under your leadership to try and settle this division between us. Some people started the false rumors about Black African Americans saying we are lazy, lairs, thieves, etc. sometimes true most times not. If you’re being worked literally to death, starved, beaten and raped it will change your character. But people from other countries need to recognize Black African Americans built this country for free, many benefits others enjoy when coming to this country is because of what we have fought and died for. And yes some are very disrespectful and mean to us as they enjoy these benefits. I think it would be a great opportunity to celebrate our sacrifices and who better to stand up for us and unite us besides you by uniting us via Fumination. Just a suggestion and thank you Niece Fumi for recognizing this and saying it out loud. Peace, Love and Prayers!

Instead of letting it separating us WE should work together to unite us. You are correct AA can be ridiculously ignorant in our actions and so can Africans on the continent. I’ve been to Ghana and Cote d’voire beautiful country and most people. However, I learned I was a target for cheaters just waiting for a foreigner to raise prices and steal from me while smiling in my face. What we all suffered through should be enough for us to join hands to bring ourselves out of the things we were taught that keeps us disliking and fighting each other. Thank you for your response, now how do we unite and build a better future for self and kind going forward?

Fumi, Thank You for your words of understanding on how some of us Black American women felt in what the FL said about us. Her remarks were insulting and infuriating, that caused hurt feelings amongst us. I hope, that any backlash she received is a learning moment for her to meter her words more carefully, because it's more than Nigeria who is listening to her. And, words are very powerful, and can cause not only hurt feelings, but physical harm as well.
Everyone has one chance to make a good first impression, and on this, she made a terrible first impression with Black American women. One thing, we are going to protect Princess Meghan, because at the end of the day, she's one of us.
Fumi, I appreciate you apologizing for your misunderstanding of how what was said would be offensive to American Blacks. My anger over what she said is subsiding, but as a result of this old wound being ripped opened, it will take a minute for it to completely go away.
I don't have a sour taste in my mouth about Nigeria, and still hope that the Invictus Games are held there one day. But, my bitter side doesn't want it held there, during the time the FL and her husband are in power. Archewell has already done good for selected charities over there, and I want that to grow. So many people will get help from that foundation, who otherwise would not receive any. Meghan is a hugh advocate for women and girls causes, and I'm happy she's there to help them wherever she can.
As long as, she shows respect, for people from other cultures, then that FL should have no other problems. It would have been nice if she publicly and personally made a statement of apology for what she said that she was misquoted, and apologized for any hurt feelings, while calling out the British press. But, she didn't.
When Governor Gary Newson did this thing and called out the lies the British Media said about Archewell, he showed them that California wasn't going to sit back and allow Meghan, Harry and Archewell be slandered. He in a press conference showed his face, as he praised Meghan and Archewell, while telling off the British tabloids. When he did that, the story died. One thing about us Americans, we are not afraid to fight, especially, against bullies.
Oh well, what was said was said, and what was done was done. But, her clarification letter didn't feel sincere, to me. It came off as gaslighting, in her blaming the British Media for the misinterpretation of her words. I disagree. We all know about the hate that media has primarily for Meghan, then Harry. And, her words gave them fodder to degrade the Princess.
If she meant something different from what she said, then she should have taken the time to actually prepare her speech. She, imo, should have left Meghan's name, Black Americans, and America out of her narrative. The message of comparison was off, mean spirited, divisive, and had sparks of tribalism in it. America isn't her enemy. Black Americans aren't her enemy. Meghan most certainly isn't her enemy.
Well, as I see it, all she has done was cause ill feelings for herself on a different continent for now.
Meanwhile, we are going to go on live our lives, and keep loving and protecting Meghan, first, then her kids and husband. . . As the old saying goes: 'This too shall pass." 🔹🔸🔹

I am a Nigerian (American). One of Aunty Fumi's male supporters. Aunty Fumi, well done with the unabashed apology - it is appropriate and true to what we've come to expect. There is a cultural tug between those of us Nigerians (and Africans) who understand that empathy and common sense is required in dealing with our historical diaspora (particularly Black Americans), and those who want to remain intellectually and emotionally lazy. Yes, it is not a one-sided issue, but as Nigerians it is important that we mind OUR side of the issue.
Not only is it highly insensitive to declare that Black Americans "don't know they come from", it also disrespects the noted culture and community that Black Americans have built in the last 400 years. Yes, Nigeria doesn't engage on the same day-to-day issues with Black Americans, but in a current global world it is important to have a baseline understanding of different perspectives.

more covered...the younger generation is in different place...with tattoos...less covered more confident in their expression of their womanhood...I also think that as we get older, some of us evolve...transform...we do not think, act or look the same as we did when were younger...and this transcends all cultures. I am happy and proud to be a Black woman who is from America and who has been blessed to travel to many places in Africa. Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, the Gambia...I love and embrace African culture...and I have been embraced by my adopted African Aunties from the many places that I have visited. I told her when I would see African women and men in my local grocery store, my heart would leap in excitement to see them! You know I’m biracial and I see white people all the time but when I see that part of me, it just fills me with pride. Until they turn around and look at my direction with the disdain and disgust and looking down their nose at me. It is so hurtful and heartbreaking to me even more than a white person calling me the N-word. so I thank you for addressing it because it is something that we experience over here and it’s not right.

It is not the "nakedness" of the body that is destroying us as a people. We can cover up our bodies where appropriate. Meghan was beautifully adorned. It is the envy, hatred, jealousy, and malice in our hearts for each other as Black people.
Fumi is being nice, but too many of us have heard what we heard. Her English was good enough for us to understand her.
Where were the young people in the group that she would have addressed as being naked? Nowhere to be seen.
Maybe someone paid her money to criticize Meghan
She couldn't find anything to criticize Meghan, so she had to be dishonest and address Meghan's "nakedness," which is a blatant lie. Again, it proves my point that many Nigerians are dishonest people.

Text messages, chats lose so much translation in what you really mean to say. And you Fumi have thousands of people interpreting what's said and seen. Misunderstandings, anger occurs as a result. This is why I have no social media accounts and don't like texting even with my family. The one word replies really bug me. This is also why if I make a comment in a chat and someone responds negatively I don't respond back. My time is too precious for that. Fumi, I applaud you and other positive content creators who bravely put their thoughts out to the public. I appreciate your videos and learn a lot from them. Thank You and You and Fumi Nation have a wonderful weekend at work school home traveling and play 🎉

I was not offended by the first ladies statement. It made me think about perception vs truth. I question who I am in America all the time.🤔 All love Fumi❣️

Thank you auntie, Fums. My mother, Temilade Adeleye Olamudun Jacqueline was 100% a Yoruba woman. I understood what the First Lady said and I wasn't happy. I don't take the wrong sides even if you're my mother. Saying that was very wrong. I love you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
