Thanks from S.Africa. Wish I'd seen this a couple of months back it would have saved me a lot of lost time with having to return my bike twice r to the garage. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks the high flow impellars are great they keep your quad running cooler.just don't get too nervous when your fan don't turn on as often as it used too.
Thank you for the video! We evidently had a bike that someone had the seal in backwards and put JB weld in the weep hole to keep it from leaking. Smart- NOT! We used your video to determine seal direction- THANK YOU! Also I am sorry there are haters out there that blame their lack of mechanical skill on videos on youtube video such as this one. If they cant take a seal out with out cracking their case maybe they should have used a smaller sledge hammer! LOL (or not work on bikes!)
Eric Swift who is gonna split the crankcase in half to put a seal in? You need to make it where I can replace the seal without having to tear the motor down. Can you do that since you calling people haters because your instruction video is more than I want to do. And I am mechanically inclined I work on my own stuff.
thank you for your video mate,i ran in a problem with my 2005 400 E.I have a huge amount of water in my oil tank.Water kept disappearing from my radiator/overflow tank.I will check this, might be the issue
GREAT video man. I had just replaced my seals while replaceing a torn pressure seal, and i had put them in backwards, so the openings were facing each other. I went to start my bike and it poure3d fluid. now i know the correct way and why its the correct way. Thanks man
cars are a bit differant from bikes & quads. what you can do is drive your car around for a few mins to get the engine temp up to normal operating temp and then park it on a dry section of pavement where there is no stains on the ground for about a hour.after about an hour move the car a little bit and look to see if there is a wet spot on the ground where the car was parked to see if it is leaking coolent or burning it.if it is leaking you can look at the bottem of the motor to see where.
That would mean the inner seal is bad. There are usually 2 seals one on each side of the hole one is to keep oil in and other is to keep coolant in. If they both go bad it could leak oil into coolant and coolant into oil.
Thank you this helped outvalot having the same problem with mine, leaking from that hole, got the kit for it coming in just wasn't Shure where it was coming now I do thank you
Thanks dude, i have a kvf700 prairie and it is dripping oil slowly through the overflow tube. I needed to figure out which way the oil seal fit in there because that is what was bad. I appreciate the video. Thanks
@25Davidh you don't really wana use gasket stuff where a fiber gasket is required.i can be done but most of the time it starts leaking not to long after u do it.you can usually go to a dealer and order just the 1 gasket you need instead of buying a whole kit and it would only cost you around $10.
I bought a 99 wr400f street legal and the hole was also plugged up unplugged it and it's definitely leaking .. .. checked my dipstick and now there's coolent in there .. can this be from the weephole or can it be from the topend seals ? I'm also getting milky residue from the top crank case breathing hose .. plz help ...
Just did my seals and took off my case and clutch cover, I reuse both gaskets only because they where in good shape still and I had silicone grease to help seal
Awesome! Thanks. I had the same in my vmax. I just noticed it today, that it leaks from that small hole. I will get to ut asap. I hope i noticed it in time. I did notice some “metalic rattling sound” when the engine gets warmer. I hope this leak is not to late and that sound comes from somewhere else, like exhaust pipes.. anyways. Thanks a lot
@mossow71 if you don't have coolant leaking from the weep hole you may have a blown head gasket and are leaking a little coolant into your oil.milky oil means water is in the oil.you also may have gone threw too deep of water since the last time you did an oil change.
Is this seal on the water pump after impeller is taken out or is is below the water pump? In other words is this seal a different part or part of the water pump? I've had an overheating problem for awhile, just changed the water pump & it's now leaking!!!An answer would be much appreciated!!! Thank you
Tanks for the upload, i have the same problem over here. this video is so help full to me because, i haven't don this before and it would me my first time doing this. tnks for the upload mate, greets, aggie from the Netherlands.
Do these seals just randomly go bad? I had my entire pump rebuilt 2 years ago. Couple weeks ago I noticed a small amount of coolant leaking so probably that outer seal going bad. How did it go bad in 2 years? I'm a weekend warrior type rider, just a few hours on Saturdays on the trails, nothing intense. I did let it sit in a storage unit in the Arizona heat for ~3 months this summer... but the coolant has to get hotter than the ambient ~120F it gets in the unit, right? Can they dry out from lack of circulation? Just want to make sure I don't have to do this again next year lol.
yes they can ive had seals fail after only a few months this can happen due to improper installation, poor quality material, defects in manufacturing ,or even impeller shaft damage/wear that wasnt noticed when being rebuilt.
@gusocorredor It could take a few minutes to a few weeks. It is one of those things that when it starts you want to fix it rite away befor anything bad happens.
I'm having this problem on my Aprilia sr50 street. The water pump is rather similar to this one, I guess they all are, and I installed a brand new water pump. So, new seals, bearings, everything. But it leaks from the weep hole, Could it be that I didn't place the bearings deep enough, or ?
So check for rust on the bearing in order to know if both seals need replacement or just do both?? The outer seal can be done without removing the inner clutchcover right??
GOOD JOB- I AHVE A SREET ROD HARLEY AND THE IMPELLER IS FIXED ON SHAFT WITHOUT ANT BOLT, WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO USE A PRESS TO RELEASE IMPELLER TO REPLACE THE SEAL BEHIND? ANY IDEA T SHARE PLS
Hey m8 thanks for that was very intresting to watch i have a yamaha 2004 yz250f and its leaking from there as well. But i havent pulled apart as yet HOW to know if the prepelar shaft is warn or not thats what the dealer said that could be warn out as well so i would have check that to
hi i have coolant leak in my gsxr750 08 after change my hoses with silicons and new coolant I have 65000khm I go to my mechanic I bought used pump with low khm and repaired with new seals all without the shaft and propeler! I have leak again but is 1 2 drops from the wheep hole under of my pump what you think...before I have a lake under of my pump! in my reservoir the cooland goes from full to low after 1-2 rides air is out maybe...
Is that a Boyesen impeller? Does the boyesen impeller need the Boyesen housing? does impeller cause leaks? does impeller need the 1/8 inch hole drilled in it to equalize pressure visa vi the 2006 and beyond impellers? Thx
So im doing the seal change now...I have the case off seal, shaft, impeller, and bearing out...while I was taking the case off I noticed little metal spacers or cylinders...well as I was taking the case off they fell and im not 100% where they go? help would be much appreciated....thanks
My son has a dvx 400 same engine as ltz 400 His issue is coolant in the oil. He's only 15 and I have no experience with these. Believe it's either a head gasket or the water pump. Any suggestions to what it is?
@Tooextrememx hehehe, im a little far from your cold winters, its summer now in the dominican republic and temp goes from 30-40 Celsius but feels a lot hotter due to humidity.
@slicksavage25 it is posable that water got into the engine i would drain the oil and check it might have caused it.you might wana check out my Important Info for 04-06 YFZ owners video cuz that might also have been the cause.
is there a way to get to those seals without having to take off the whole side of the engine there? or can we just take off the water pump and get to it?
Hi I'm having a similar problem with my 2004 Saab 9-3 Convertible . It was leaking somewhere around the water pump so I replaced it but now when the engine gets too hot the coolant tank starts to boil and it leaks somewhere. I'm hoping it's not the head gasket.
Thanks for doing this video. I realize it's pretty old, but still good info. I do have a question though... I plan to replace the seals bearing and gasket on my 2000 Xplorer 400. I called the local shop to price it through them, just out of curiosity. They said that the counter balancer must be replaced no matter what. Do you know anything about that? They quoted me $1200. Sounds a little fishy to me as I haven't found any info on that needing to be replaced as well. Get back to me as soon as possible if you can! Thanks.
On my kdx 200 it has a drip from the overflow hole. It has never done that before. I had a bunch of engine work done to it and it started after that, my coolant reserve tank is empty after 2-3 weeks with the drip. Any ideas on how to stop the leak?
I got an old 86 bronco ii and I recently started it up , walked around it and noticed two small greenish clear puddles under it between the waterpump and the fan , whatchya think about that
You are way off on your coolant system operation theory. The "little hole" is called a weep hole and it's purpose is not to "relieve pressure" but to allow any coolant that leaks past the 1st water pump seal to exit the engine. It is designed to allow the escaping coolant to be visual so you know that it's time to service the seals before the 2nd seal goes out and water gets into the crank case. Every single machine that has a water pump, also has a weep or "tattle tale" hole. You are somewhat correct that a cooling system generated pressure, but the pressure is managed by the radiator cap and coolant catch tank (if equipped) or vent hose that attaches right below the radiator cap. The weep hole below the water pump has nothing to do with pressure build up in the system. The water pump bearing is rarely, if ever, affected by coolant entering the crank case. Usually the first thing to fail as a result of coolant in the crank case is the cylinder wall(s) will score due to diluted engine oil creating inadequate cylinder wall lubrication. Most water pumps use a carbon/ceramic water seal which is far superior to a static spring lip seal(s)ike shown in this video. Motorcycles will sometimes use the traditional spring lip seals because they are lighter and more compact. Factual analysis is superior to assumptions every time. If you don't know, find out. Happy wrenching! Safety 3rd!
My Kawasaki KLE 250 (engine similar to ninja) has cold engine coolant leak from underneath of cooling pump side. Then it cuts off after engine being started and fully heated up. What it could be?
Man thanks I have that same exact problem, I'm not a mechanic but I'm a paintball marker tech, I figure this is not to hard for me to do myself nooo????? hey do you know how much a new battery for the yfz runs for it's time for a new one it doesent hold the charge any more.
Awesome man...I have an 83 Honda Shadow 750 which is doing the same thing,I t started w a small drip, now dumps some out while riding,ALSO,mine started to run hot and over heat,so I think maybe if the seals can leak coolant by,maybe air can also be drawn in? Felt like i just had an air pocket i could'nt get rid of,being always hot?so in short,,i am waiting for a new water pump rite now also, this video gives me a little hope this will fix it,,thanx..
Hi, i have a motorcycle 125cc euro 5 engine, year 2021, i notice there's slite of coolant where the weep hole is, but very few, the coolant level just drop a bit, it has only 1,000km on the clock. what your touths please?. thanks 🙏
as long as it isnt alot you can just keep an eye on the level and top it off when needed as long as it isnt often you should be ok for a bit just check you oil often also to make sure it isnt getting milky
@gusocorredor and before it leaks to the bearing there is a seal, so its first seal then leak through hole then second seal and leaks to oil, how long can i run on it using the second seal before the bearing getting damaged???
I replaced my seals because water was mixing with oil. The shaft seemed a little worn but it wasn't too bad. I think I put the seal in backwards but Im not sure I will go check it. Would this mater? I have change my top end gaskets, and now my water pump bearing and seals. What else could it be?
+Ben Cook i just did my water pump seal & gasket in my 07 kx250f and now it's leaking coolant from over flow hose instead of from water pump cover weep hole. wondering if i should haev done the bearings too :(
+02SubaruWRX Your bearing is probably ok. The pump probably wasn't working good and now that it is its creating pressure inside the radiator. A lot of guys with KX 250fs add a second reservoir for the over flow tube to sit in (like trail bikes have). Its a common problem with the kx models.
If you only need to replace the first seal, you only need to take off the water pump cover, and unscrew the impeller. Pretty easy. I did it in about 5 minutes
Man I’ve dropped my kfx400 at the dealer 3x to fix the mysterious coolant leak. Just got it back yesterday, they did the head gasket, but coolant is still disappearing
Hello , thanks for the video. I am having overheating problems with my bmw e46 . I suspected a leak on the pipes and also the head tester appeared to be yellow.... Please I want to know if is the coolant leak causing the overheating or if my head gasket is actually blown.... because I am actually in doubt of the head tester results.
I have a 2006 yfz 450,jetted. It is riding a little hotter than average and the radiator fluid is not leaking through the seals or water pump. It is leaking through a hose which is connected to the water pump? I don't know why but i fill up the tank and it slips right out through the hose
Does the fan moves with hand when the engine is off. Mine is so hard it don't move with hands. Can you pls tell how to.check water pump is working or faulty
Bhavesh Patel if you have the cover off pull the spark plug and hit the start button to spin the motor if the pump blades don’t spin something is wrong. You should not be able to spin the water pump impeller by hand.
i have a rm80 im about to do this same job, i have to remove my kick starter and cluch cable to remove the cover thing, i need tips on how to not mess things up please
I have a 2006 grand Prix and when I crank up the car it leaks antifreeze the water pump is dry the heater holes are dry and it leaks from the bottom both holes top and bottom are fine
I have a crf 450r I changed the seals on the water pump now it's not leakin but I'm some how burning antifreeze but not oil.. Can u help me.. I'm not sure where to start with it.. Any help would be so much appreciated
Thanks from S.Africa.

Hello that’s a great information. I have a question what about when is oil coming out from the same hole
That would mean the inner seal is bad. There are usually 2 seals one on each side of the hole one is to keep oil in and other is to keep coolant in. If they both go bad it could leak oil into coolant and coolant into oil.
Thank you this helped outvalot having the same problem with mine, leaking from that hole, got the kit for it coming in just wasn't Shure where it was coming now I do thank you
@gusocorredor A dealer could charge anywere from $70-200 bucks including parts. If you do it yourself it would cost about $20-40.
highly frustrating video quality and the camera held to close
are those seals called water pump oil seals and are they the same seal just a quantity of 2 seals?
I have a question. Are you able to replace both seals without the engine casing coming off or not possible?
Great explanation. Thanks.
I think I have this problem. To the shop it's going soon.

I’m guessing this is the cause of oil in my coolant? How do you get that bearing out?
Did you figure it out
@@allenupnorth2191 yes I did. I took a socket and set it on the bearing, then I lightly hit the socket with a hammer until the bearing came out.
Awesome! Thanks. I had the same in my vmax. I just noticed it today, that it leaks from that small hole. I will get to ut asap. I hope i noticed it in time. Hello I have coolant mixing with the oil, also leaking from weep hole,so which seal do I change to stop mixing and leaking ?
Excellent, thanks. Having that exact problem.
Ha you save my life bro thanks I was wondering why i was having shit coming out of that hole
@vicrsx i use a desulfator on my battery to get a bit more use out of mine.also best to always run your quad with low beams on.
@gusocorredor Yes you have to drain the oil and coolent cuz you need to remove the whole side cover.

would it be bad to just change the outside seal so you don't have to take the side case off?
Hi I'm having a similar problem with my 2004 Saab 9-3 Convertible . It was leaking somewhere around the water pump so I replaced it but now when the engine gets too hot the coolant tank starts to boil and it leaks somewhere. I'm hoping it's not the head gasket.
Is it necessary to remove the whole cas cover like you did in the video to do this job? Thanks.
Great info but the camera was so close to everything that it’s really hard to figure out what’s where and stuff.
@gusocorredor thats a fair labor price.where are you located cuz i think 20w50 may be a little too much if you are in the wrong area.

Good job, nice how to, way to explain the home made seal puller!
So those seals go out it will cause coolant to be into oil filter housing?
Does this apply to a 2014KTM 500exc?
Do you have to take off the side cover or can i just take out the impeller seal without taking off the side cover
My Kawasaki KLE 250 (engine similar to ninja) has cold engine coolant leak from underneath of cooling pump side. Then it cuts off after engine being started and fully heated up. What it could be?
Sounds like the pump seal has gotten hard and when it warms up it softens and seals back up
glad to help.
i figured this vid would be better to explain then sending messages back and forth

If the first seal blows but the second one is fine. Do I have to take the whole side covering off. Please answer!
If you only need to replace the first seal, you only need to take off the water pump cover, and unscrew the impeller. Pretty easy. I did it in about 5 minutes
i have a 96 cbr f3 and i’m getting oil in my coolant but oil is clean in engine ? oil cooler maybe
