    In some areas of art art supplies are the last thing you need to worry about, but in others they're the key to success.

    I did exactly what you describe at the beginning of the video "I want to try this...but cheaply..." so I bought a cheap "matte" sealer that made the doll shiny and sticky and had no tooth, and a cheap 72 pack of watercolor pencils and it was a disaster full of broken pencils, wrist cramps and a poor sticky head that color couldn't build any darker pigments on...so I acetoned the whole thing to start over, but you know what... It was stained! Either the pencils leached or I pressed so hard I actually tattooed the vinyl head :( I guess the good news is I was going to do the same face over again, but with better materials. I bought some Mr. Super Clear, and then your Arteza review came out and I bought those pencils with FAR better results. I also recently got a used Derwent INKtense 12 pack from a friend that I am very very excited to try thanks to your video review. This was a fantastic comparison piece, and it will prevent me from buying other not-good pencils.
    Other ideas for similar videos:
    -different kinds of airbrushes/airbrush paints
    -acrylics
    -any sealers other than Mr Super Clear you've tried and the result
    -best clay/heat form plastic/other compounds to use for accessories
    -best materials to use for doll clothes

      I know this was a year ago at least from when I am commenting but for the first doll I customized instead of me using MSC which is very toxic without a respirator so I instead used Duraclear which is a brush on sealant but it works really well for me. Hope this helps for you and or any future people who come across this comment :)

    This is an outstanding video, very through review, extremely helpful and interesting. It makes me happy to see it because I see a wonderful lesson but it makes me sad cause I bought my Faber Castell Alber Dureh tin thinking they were the best I could get and now I know they are not... they were the recommended ones from a very good doll customizer and I thought her choice would be the ideal. My money is not wasted because they are good anyway... but now i have that urge to get the Derwent ones, maybe the Arteza... oooh, the art material world is a though one! I suck at everything I touch. I don't exaggerate when I say this, I really mean I have gone my whole life without an artistic outlet for my very artistic brain. When I heard about doll customizing, I knew...this is for me.
    I have never drawn professionally before, nor have I have ever painted on a canvas before. I am a beginner in all things "art".
    But I knew I wanted this hobby. It was perfect for me, it was exciting for me, it was liberating to finally look at an art form and say "I can do this".
    So I went out and bought Arteza watercolor pencils, Arteza acrylic paints, Mungyo soft pastels, a bunch of micro-glitters. I bought cheapy make-up brushes for the soft pastels, I bought tiny brushes for tiny doll details. I spent $300 on supplies alone, non of which I had previously. I also spent $150 on a small doll collection to repaint, and I finally started.
    And let me tell you...I went from talentless hack to making a VERY impressive starter doll that I couldn't believe I had made. And I can't help but imagine how broken hearted I would have been if I had used lesser quality supplies, totally effed up my whole project, and given up on my dream before it could begin.
    I now have plans to make a career of customizing and selling my works. I also have a UA-cam channel made and waiting in the wings for when I have an okay camera to film on. I am excited, and have a hobby for the first time in my life. And I have Maryna to thank for inspiring me. So thank you. 💞😇💞

    Awesome video! You were quite right when you said that Inktense are playing in another league. They are not watercolour pencils, they are acrylic paint pencils. I guess, it doesn't really matter in doll repaint, but on paper it's a big deal, because you can activate them with water only once. Once they are dry, the colour becomes permanent and wouldn't move even if you add more water.

  • @KimJiMi45
    @KimJiMi45 4 роки тому +19

    I love you for saying that you needed good supplies to draw well!♥️ Most of people especially here on UA-cam says that you can draw with everything, but this is not true at all. Using poor quality supplies make you hate drawing because nothing looks as good as you want. You do not have to buy professional but there are plenty of students quality supplies that can be used! Thank you for this video! Maybe more people will try to fall in love with creating things ;)♥️

    • @firegodessreiko
      @firegodessreiko 4 роки тому +4

      To be fair, they aren't required...but they do help. =3 You literally CAN draw with anything....do you WANT to draw with eyeliner, coffee, lipstick, charcoal briquettes.....is the real question. Time spent is the real key to success above any supplies on the market...but having nice supplies can make it easier to want to put the time in. I get what you're saying here, but there is literally no 'magical' art supply on the market that will make you the 'amazing artist' you want to be other than practice and drive....both of which you have to bring to the table yourself....but at least they're free~!

    • @KimJiMi45
      @KimJiMi45 4 роки тому +2

      @@firegodessreiko I get your point but coffee and other things that are not usually used for drawing is a different matter. This whole thing is more based on psychology. If you draw with coffee bad it is easier to continue to try drawing as you do not feel that everyone can use it for drawing. I was the best example of this thing. I really wanted to paint with watercolors but I only had the cheapest ones and all my paintings were really bad quality and I always said that I cannot use paint or anything similar (I hated every brush existing 😂) This lasted more than 10years. One day I saw beautiful paiting and I tried recreating it. That time I saw the difference in types of paint and I bought myself students quality watercolors (around 10USD) and God I fall in love with painting. Good quality materials helped me to convince myself that I can draw and paint and now I love doing it. Artist can use literary everything to creating art as they trained a lot and know pros and cons of materials but people who just are discovering art world need to have good base to not be discouraged.

    A few of the other customizers that I watch use different pencils for different things, for example: Derwent to really lay down saturated base colors, but a harder pencil like Faber-castell to do eyelashes and detail in the lips. Make the traits of the product work for you, I think might be a better idea rather than to be loyal to just one brand expecting it to do it all. I really enjoyed this review! After ordering the wrong Arteza Pencils (waxbased) I decided to buy the Stabilo Pencils since they are reasonable priced here in Germany:
    I've drawn one single layer so far and already love them. Thank you for recommending them!!

    I have had problems with the white of the eye. Everything else works for me. It wasn’t until I saw your video that I realized my very pricey pencils were last on the list. I just ordered a set of the ones you use for repaints. Thank you so much for your honest and instructional videos. I have always painted but I have learned much from you. God bless!!

    You should make a video about different types of doll hair. Saran Vs. Nylon etc. and using different rerooting tools. Test the hair with heat and how easy it is to style. Etc.

    So relieved to see this. When I first decided to do doll makeovers I bought Derwent on impulse as it was on sale on amazon then started to worry that I didn't get the best quality as none of the UA-camrs I watch really use them. so I'm happy to see this. Still haven't had the courage to try face repaint but at least I know when I take the dive I have the right pencils for it. Thank you

    I just purchased some individual Derwent inktense pencils for doll customizing a couple days ago, because of how intense they were on a paper test. Colour me excited when I saw you posted this video, actually getting to see the results on a doll face and your feedback on them. What a weird coincidence! Thank you for doing this! Your videos have been so helpful and motivating to get me back into attempting doll customizing

    I'm really glad you did this because I've been wanting to get into doll customization. I knew you had some tutorials but didn't know you've done a video for color pencil testing. I purchased some Faber Castel, Arteza and Prisma Premiere water color pencils but after seeing Arteza crumbling may or may not use them. One thing I've been doing is making seperate purchases over time so I'm not breaking my bank account. I also use the water color in other art forms too so they haven't gone to waste! I've also known that you, Hextian and Dollightful do use acrylic yarn so that helps save a lot on doll hair when you can't easily get ahold of it. Mr. Superclear is just one thing like you said is hard to get ahold of.

    I personally haven't drawn in years. I'm more of a craft person but my sister and I always used to try to get 'the best' pencils and its true that Faber Castell is almost always recommended!
    We wrre also lucky enough years ago to get a small tin of Derwent Inktense pencils at a ridiculously low price, because they were the last set in the store and weren't even on the system anymore. The closest product the cashier could find was another Derwent item that was only £4.80! There was no price label where we found them either so she had to put it through for that price 🤭
    I found this video really helpful and I do think it is a good thing to have videos like this every now and then :) it helps show what is possible and to make the best choice for us personally. Thank you for doing this and I'm glad you're so happy with your new Derwent babies after splashing out on them :P x

    I started with a set of Prismacolor Watercolor pencils that I got as a gift in Highschool that I had held onto & while the color was nice, I had such a hard time using the white - it just wasn't going on well. I wanted a higher end colored pencil so I went and got a white Derwent watercolor pencil and OMG it was like night & day. It was so creamy & pigmented. Definitely might invest in a set if I continue with my doll repaints.

    from doll artist to pencil tester, way to go! :D
    i have a box of LYRA watercolor pencils (a german brand). i bought the 12 pencils boxbecause at first i didn't want to pay for a bigger box, but now i regret a bit because, while they work pretty good, i lack of some basic colors. no purple, no pink, two shades of blue, brown and green. with that i use chalk pastels from Conté that i have for 20 years (i haven't used them anymore since i graduated from art school). they're fine for my level.

    Wow, it's so neat to see the difference art supplies make for even such an experienced artist! They all look pretty, but the Derwent head looks so vibrant. I was going to order Faber Castell because I'd heard them mentioned a lot but I'm glad I researched first.

    Incredibly useful video! Thank you for taking time for testing the pencils! I can definitely see buying the best black and white pencils to get the intense colours with minimal effort and perhaps buying one of the good but less expensive brands to save some money until you can afford the wooden box nirvana. I would also like to see this pencil test done on resin heads as many in the BJD faceup community would find it very helpful, myself included.

    So glad you posted this. I tried to do a repaint a year or so ago and bought the cheapest watercolor pencils and they didn't even transfer the color onto the doll. It's good to know you can buy derwent pencils individually. Maybe I'll start with a few pencils at a time
