Polychromos is an Artist grade pencil,designed to work in layers.That's why, Fabriano Artistico,is considered the most ideal paper,to use with Polychromos.For beginners though,Canson 160gsm and Fabriano Accademia 200 or Fabriano drawing books in 160gsm, are an ideal choice to begin their coloured pencil journey. Polychromos,is a slow medium.don't let that discourage you, it's just it's nature!
@@A.IkenChems95 Strathmore Color pencil paper not so much, Bristtol Velum is better, however Hahnemuhle Dessin 150gsm and Fabriano Artistico Hot pressed as also Arches Hot pressed,are far better from any point of view, to any paper from Strathomore. Actually, these are THE best papers for drawing with Polychromos or Graphite pencils, Charcoal etc.

I splurged during a sale last year and got (for the first time) full sets of Prismacolor, Polychromos and Albrecht Durers. I went more than a little overboard lol. Unfortunately I have barely touched them all year. I really like the feel of both colored pencils, the Prismacolor feel almost like a high quality crayon to me and I have used them in coloring books, vs the PCs very obviously are meant to be worked in a million layers and honestly feel way higher quality. 2024 is my year to really get into my art supplies and experiment, making an ATC every day to build the habit and skill.
That’s a very good collection to get in one go! I love the Polychromos, and the Prismacolor really have grown on me after inning these for a test. How do you find the Albrecht Durers? I haven’t used them before but have them scheduled to be looked at in a few months
@@StuffBySunshine I have only done a little "sketching" with them, no full paintings but I really like them. I have played with Derwent and Koh-i-nor before and these are much better compared to those. They go onto the paper very smooth, feeling much like Polychromos and blend out completely even on the lesser quality watercolor paper I tried them on. Koh-i-nor was similar though a little harder and not quite as good blending out, I would have stuck with them but can't find them open stock anywhere so opted for Albrecht Durers going forward. I've had a 12 set of Derwents for about 18yrs and use them as Bible highlighters since they are very poor at blending out and don't work for my preferred style. I am really looking forward to experimenting with them and seeing what I can do. I am dominantly a watercolorist and am curious when I might prefer these over my paints.
I love Polychromos. I don't like wax pencils too much and prefer oil based. Polychromos are excellent for layering, have great colour payoff, great for details. When you have them in your hand, you can feel high quality. They are hard led, but to me they feel very smooth and silky on the paper. Also,they have the biggest range of reds compared to other professional brands. And this is a huge plus +++
I’ve been reviewing so many pencils lately but the Polychromos are still my go to pencil for most of my work. Pretty much exactly for the reasons you love them! Interesting, I didn’t realise that.
Somebody put a lot of work into contacting all the pencil companies about if they’re oil or wax based. None of them are one or the other but a mix of both in their binders. The oil vs wax thing is a myth.
Like the vid. I'm noting all 6 of the tested pencils are in the tin of 24, so for people that lean into the blending of primaries, the 24 is a great set. I agree with most of what you said there. I'm particularly curious how you feel they compare to Derwent Chrimanflow pencils. I find the feel, vibrancy and blend-ability quite similar. I have tried a few quality tine in the 24-36 size ranges and so far I think Chromaflow and Polychromos are my favourites.
Thankyou! I try and pick pencils that are really common so people can access the same color range. To be fair I haven’t yet played with the chroma flow, I’m very slow in making these videos BUT hoping to start getting them out more regularly soon ☺️ so I’ll check them out then!
Sunshine you are an excellent scientist Your experiments were exceptionally well done and I trust your observations. Your experiments show an odd quirk of light and color, something I to have observed in other media of art supply. To be a bit extra sciencey. Color saturation also depends on the color's -light wave length. Red has a larger - weak wave length, so red pigments have to be heavily saturated for our eyes to see them. Blue has a smaller - strong wave length, so blue pigments have to be less saturated to keep from dominating over other colors. Green is in that sweet zone between saturation and and wave length. So on the pressure test everything went as a quality color pencil should. There is also a quirk of wave lengths and wave interference way to complex to explain, that is demonstrated in the gradient test. The gradation experiment showed what I would expect, alternating from heavy to light, with the effect becoming more noticeable the further away you get from red. I even watched you fudge the white gradient test, which in itself is a confirming test, because we expect a consistency from white, and instinctively think the mistake was hours. You thought you made a mistake but the white really does go from solid to light and back to solid . In the strength test, I am surprised that the red was stronger, they must have a special binding agent for red to compensate for heavy pigment saturation. As for the bar code on the pencil - it means I can buy a color individually and not have to buy packs to get one color. I think the key word is “Professional” in this set, meaning the artist is aware of the quirks of light, and knows the techniques to adapt to them and use them. Many artist materials compensates and has quirks in other areas, that I find annoying prefer materials to act according to their pure nature, as I have an idea on how to compensate. Going buy your observations and experiments, that I completely trust, I would give the Faber Castell Professional PolyChromos Pencils an S. I will be saving up for a set.

I swore i wouldnt do any more UA-cam videos and end up doing this series (which takes bloody ages to make😂). Fascinating! So what your saying is that specific colors should always react in a specific way for for specific tests? In a perfect world that is? Im assuming thats what the manufacturers blend the cores to compensate for (the strengths and weaknesses each color pigment has) and i guess thats the secret blend of each manufacturer. The color vs the usability ratio etc etc. Haha yes I know the barcode is iust an annoyance, they used to have a sticker rather than the printed barcode. Its a quibble but it does take away a bit from the premium feel. A secret for you, so far there are no s's (theres a few close marks) I actually had the benefit with these that I was able to film multiple pencils at once then observe the results after the fact. It gave me the ability to grade on a curve. Ie when I was doing it seperatly, everything looked good but together with results i could rank them from best to worst. Really helped establish my definition of quality. They are a great brand, if you do go a set I dont think you'd be dissapointed. Thankyou for such a well thought out comment 😊💜

A color's wave length has characteristics in it's self - HOWEVER, our eyes do not see color accurately, that is why when you buy individual colors, some colors look exactly alike, but are placed in different areas on the display rack, or why certain colors look different on the label than what the color is coming out of the pencil or tube. The manufacturer has to make a decision on which end to be accurate, the way the color actually is, or how we see the color.

The Faber Casttelle colors appear to me, from a layman's perspective, to choose to go for accuracy - how natural colors “should” behave. Emphasis on “should” . You can not get around the structure of the core to compensate for the pigment, if you are going for close to the natural characteristics of the color, or a pure pigment. Where as other manufacturers might not use a pure pigment to give more of a joy factor, and have a consistency in how the color applies. Regardless, there is always a trade off when producing a color, do to multiple factors. I think your gut instincts are right on. You may not be 100% factually accurate (nobody is), but my gut instinct says you are on the right path. I could deduce for myself, the information I needed from the experimentation. Keep doing what you are doing, they way you are doing it.
29:11 The black pigment is essentially made out of carbon, thus it being harder (diamonds are also made out carbon btw). it's also why carbon based inks/pigments are fade proof.
Well that does make sense. I’m assuming the pigment combined with the bonding agent is the ratio that gives us our strength and break point. Interestingly not all blacks are as hard as this one. But in my testing a lot of the blackest blacks (so far) have been pretty close in strength and break point
When it comes to Polychromos,120 gsm paper isn't enough for me. I use either Fabriano Artistico HP Extra White 300gsm, or Fabriano Accademia 200gsm. Fabriano also makes Drawing spiral books, that come with 160 GSM paper and are designed for coloured pencil drawing. Canson's coloured pencil paper, is also at 160gsm weight (thickness).That one enhances the colour vibrancy,which is the first difference you notice compared to Fabriano papers. I prefer Fabriano for coloured pencils,Canson is more suitable for beginners though.
Oh 120 gsm is just for these tests as I’m using such a huge amount of it. I’ve been testing the Fabriano 300gsm studio watercolour paper with a few pieces and it’s excellent! I’m usually a Canson girl, but as they don’t do hot press I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the Fabriano
Yes of course. They are one of the world’s best artist pencils and you can do virtually everything with them. Often people start with something a bit cheaper, but I think if you can afford these (or another premium pencil) then it can only help your artistic journey in the long run ☺️💜

What do you normally draw with? I’ve never found a pencil without problems but these are still my “go to” pencil as overall I’ve always found them consistent and reliable. Paper wise it’s just general paper so nothing really special

I've just find out youre channel. Very interesting test. I appreciate the methodology for testing the vibrancy and saturation at different pressures / weight force and for testing the breaking point. I think a test for testing a set of colour pencils could include how well the basic tones are covered by pencils. For instance: I'm using right polychromos, I've picked all of them singularly in a fine art shop; I wasn't able to find a typical vivid saturated red I can easily find in other brands. They all tend to pink, or too light - Scarlet red 118 should fit but it's a little lighter and the covering colour looks pinkish - . Another test I think is very important that you could do is trying to blend two colours at their best, regardless the effort, not limiting at just one pass: some brand might require more effort but produce better and cleaner results. I like the fact Polychromos are not so soft to break easily thou they require more effort to blend them. This allow to draw more easily details. One thing that makes me nervous is the golden etched didascaly: I can't read it. I spend a ton of time trying to understand the hell of the number of the pencil I'm using because that golden color reflects too much: I have to pick a magnifying lens and read the writing rotating away the pencil for avoiding reflection. I have a very little experience with colour pencils - I used sometimes a Charisma set I keep as my treasure that I love for how soft they are thou they are very hard to use for detail and I realized once they are not consistent among different colours, for these two reasons I prefer Polychromos - and I'm exercising and I think overall this brand is very good. Oh ... would you mind being my woman, just in case... 😅

Color saturation also depends on the color's -light wave length.
Red has a larger - weak wave length, so red pigments have to be heavily saturated for our eyes to see them.

I've just find out youre channel. Very interesting test. I appreciate the methodology for testing the vibrancy and saturation at different pressures / weight force and for testing the breaking point.
I think a test for testing a set of colour pencils could include how well the basic tones are covered by pencils. For instance: I'm using right polychromos, I've picked all of them singularly in a fine art shop; I wasn't able to find a typical vivid saturated red I can easily find in other brands. They all tend to pink, or too light - Scarlet red 118 should fit but it's a little lighter and the covering colour looks pinkish - .
Another test I think is very important that you could do is trying to blend two colours at their best, regardless the effort, not limiting at just one pass: some brand might require more effort but produce better and cleaner results.
I like the fact Polychromos are not so soft to break easily thou they require more effort to blend them. This allow to draw more easily details. One thing that makes me nervous is the golden etched didascaly: I can't read it. I spend a ton of time trying to understand the hell of the number of the pencil I'm using because that golden color reflects too much: I have to pick a magnifying lens and read the writing rotating away the pencil for avoiding reflection. I have a very little experience with colour pencils - I used sometimes a Charisma set I keep as my treasure that I love for how soft they are thou they are very hard to use for detail and I realized once they are not consistent among different colours, for these two reasons I prefer Polychromos - and I'm exercising and I think overall this brand is very good.
