    If I had $1 for every time I’ve heard people asking for these in more colors…UA-cam, Facebook groups, Reddit, Twitter…artists literally everywhere want them in a wider range. So strange that Derwent doesn’t add more earthy muted colors to this line. You could easily expand to 48 colors and keep it with a landscape palette. We should all be writing to Derwent or something. Money waiting to be made, Derwent! 😬

      Haha, right? I don't know why they haven't expanded. It's even a question in the FAQ's on their website!

    Awesome picture as always Shana! I love scenic, outdoors pictures and I also love these pencils. Since Derwent came out with their 72 Lightfast line, then added 28 to that line to make a 100 set of Lightfast, I seriously doubt they will expand on this lovely line of pencils. I keep my 24 set of Drawing Pencils in the same pencil case as my 100 Lightfast. I have the set of 12 Drawing Pencils on my coffee table in front of me, not far from my Polychromos in a Lazy Susan.

    Beautiful artwork! I too have been using these pencils for years and I agree that they are underrated. I do seem to be in the minority with regard to not wanting the colour range to be expanded though. I think I feel that this is a very special and unique set for those of us who favour earth tones and a more muted palette; it is very much the colours of the landscape in Cumbria where Derwent is based and also here in the neighbouring county of Lancashire. There are primaries and brights aplenty in other ranges and I love this set just as it is!

      Thank you! Yeah, I can definitely see where you are coming from when it comes to the color scheme. I go back and forth on wanting more colors, but I do really love the color scheme as it is, too. It's unique and beautiful!
      Have you ever been to the Derwent Pencil Museum? I hear it's really cool! I have been to that side of the pond, but if I ever make it there, I definitely want to visit the museum.

      Hi! If I may ask, as you've been using these pencils for such a long time, which papers did you find more suitable? I'm struggling about, testing papers that range from pulp to 100% cotton, and still haven't found anything satisfactory for the most used techniques. I'm willing to use it for animal illustrations (fur, feathers and so on...).

    I like doing landscapes and such and these, along with the graphitints, would be perfect😊 But, I also like to do other subjects as well, so I can see myself building up quite the pencil collection! I already have some prismacolors (a dedicated manga pack and the 36 pack Verithin's) and some cheaper color pencils I take out with me to do rough and prelim work. I also use those for just coloring in as well...good "therapy"!!! 😊

    Totally agree with you, despite not using colored pencils that much I drew with various brands, including Faber Castell (Polychromos), Caran D'ache (Luminance) and Derwent (Artist, Coloursoft, Inktense and Watercolor) but none compares with the Derwent Drawing.
    At least in my opinion, the result between classic pencil and pastel is great because if these pencils are used well, then the result is similar to old storybook illustrations.

    They are gorgeous and subtle. It has been said (in the context of Beethoven's composition techniques and style) that one of the most important features of art is limitation, or the sense of what to leave out, just as important as what to include. The only thing I would say this set needs, for its wonderful nature study potential, is a little more green range, or else the means to make some more greens. I have been wanting to move in that direction, going for exact natural tones and the moods they invoke (November in the soul, as Melville said), and I am thinking about this set of pencils and toned papers, greys and browns and cream.
    Sorry for chattering on, but I sometimes am really struck by how all the arts have emotions under them that ring the same no matter what the medium is, and a color set like this can provide that awareness.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  4 місяці тому +1

      There is no need to apologize, I like in-depth dialog when it comes to the arts. I agree with what has been said about art and limitation. I actually think that limitation often breeds more creativity. It, at the very least, forces us to do some creative problem solving and can lead to some pretty interesting, outside of the box, thinking. It seems counterintuitive, but setting limits is also a great way to get oneself out of a period of art block. Sometimes, having too many options can be overwhelming. And, of course, setting limits within a piece of art can lead to a sense of cohesion, amongst other qualities.
      As someone who loves creating landscapes, I would love to see more greens as well! I think that is definitely an area of potential growth for this range. Toned paper compliments these pencils beautifully, and these pencils layer well on a toned background. I love using them on Canson Mi-Teintes!

    Derwent I believe are based in the Lake District in the UK, we do get sun but we also get shed loads of grey weather and wet days, which these pencils would I am guessing be ideal for. How would they work on acrylic layer? I do a lot of mixed nedia. How would they accept layers on top? Thank you ❤

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  9 місяців тому +3

      When using them with acrylics, you will want to use them on top of the acrylics. Since acrylics are a water-based medium, the wax of the pencil would likely resist the paint if you were to layer acrylics on top of the pencil. They would likely work best on a matte acrylic. If it's a glossy acrylic, it may not accept the layers as easily. I find this technique also works better on paper than on canvas. I hope this helps! Thank you for watching! 💖

    • @CautionArtistatPlay

      I think that is there for Derwent to be able to trace back the pencil to see when it was made, etc. I found this statement in the FAQ'S on the Derwent website: "Each batch has a date code stamped on next to the imprint. This identifies the week that batch was made. From that, we can trace the exact details of when the pencils were manufactured: the day, the operator, the machine, etc." So I believe those are just codes the manufacturer uses.

    Basically what you are saying is you have to learn how to use the medium you are using. Why do you need more than 24 colours in this medium is for creative tonal sketches all derwent products are excellent quality

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  Рік тому

      These are not just for creative tonal sketches, though they are great for that purpose. But they can be used in any way someone feels comfortable using them as long as they enjoy the process and the final outcome is what they are seeking. The color choice is personal preference. Yes, Derwent products are all excellent, but they aren't all created equal. These have a different feel than other colored pencils and are way more opaque. I think it's those working properties that make people want more colors in this line. To each their own though.

  • @oldladyfarmer7211
    @oldladyfarmer7211 Рік тому +1

    I'm probably the millionth person to say this "The reason they seem to be underrated is because the number of colors is so limited." They have limited their own product - supply & demand. Don't provide the product until EVERYONE wants them, then you're nearly guaranteed to make a killing when you actually do release larger sets.

    What about wax bloom?

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  Місяць тому +1

      I haven't noticed any real issues with wax bloom with these. They tend to lay down pretty matte as a general rule and don't have the same kind of waxy build up as a Prismacolor. Though there are times when, depending on how you are coloring, you may be able to see a difference in stroke pattern in different lighting, even in places completely blended. It's not very noticeable, though, and it doesn't take away from the image in any way.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  Місяць тому +1

      I honestly really like using the Caran d'Ache Pablo's over oil pastels. But I work on a sanded paper, and that makes all the difference because it gives the pencils something to grip through the layers of oil pastels. The Derwent Drawing pencils work too, but I tend to like the Pablo's a bit better for this.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  5 місяців тому +1

      Honestly, as far as material and feel goes, I think these are really like no other pencil out there. That being said, I have yet to encounter a colored pencil line that these don't mix well with. That includes pencils that aren't made by Derwent. I literally use the Chinese White in every colored pencil piece I do. If I had to choose another line from Derwent, it would be the Derwent Lightfast. Mainly because they are a high-quality pencil, and I love the way they blend. But you could use these with any artist quality colored pencil you have, and it should be fine.
