Hey Chaps! This was SUCH a tough call - S22 better for photos, iPhone for video maybe??
UPDATE 1: the text is reversed at 00:15 for the cinematic video, iPhone is 4k, s22 is 1080p
UPDATE 2: It’s okay to disagree with me - these videos are more about helping you make a decision. I’m just giving my 2 cents 😊

Forget all this Samsung vs Apple crap. in my opinion, all the flagship phones are pretty fantastic. All you need to decide is if you want to be on Android or iOS (Mac OS etc). The advantages on both sides are robust and the shortcomings are also equally there. For eg.: Apple Ecosystem is pretty expensive to maintain, but everything works seamlessly with updates to almost everything for at least 6-7 years (give or take), even for OS. On the Android side, you have so many options that your prices can vary from peanuts to things that are more expensive than even the apple ecosystem. Things might not work as seamlessly as on Apple, but you have way too many options to make it work the way you want to. Apple locks you in, Android lets you choose what you like to do. Once you decide which side you want to be on, its easy to set your home and your life according to it.

Iphone 14 pro max user here and I genuinely lean more towards the Samsung photos. As a pro photographer, the shadows are handled more naturally on Samsung as it exposes for highlights and the shadows fall where they should. IPhone has a flatter image that seems to raise shadows way too much and gives the images an HDR look. In light room on my Canon R5, I would need to raise shadows by 25 to 50 to get images with similar "dynamic range" as the iPhone shots. Auto white balance on iPhone seems to struggle too.

@@froznfire9531 I feel like I've seen much better image processing from previous iPhones. I switched to iPhone from Android to create consistency in my workflow from MacBook Pro and iPad. Apple's new image processing seems to be focused on trying to show off the increased sensor size and larger dynamic range by trying to show more detail on the subject, in the sky and in the background all while over sharpening. This leaves us with these flat, desaturated images. If you raise shadows and black point in photo editing software like Lightroom, it impacts contrast as well as color saturation which is what seems to be happening here. Not a fan. I did notice IOS 16 has photographic styles setting now so you can choose a more contrast rich or vibrant photo style that processes images differently. Need to test it.

Thank you for the comparison, it was very informative. One note from a hobby-photographer point of view--when reviewing the still shots, particularly outdoors, a little bit of clipping, and some detail lost to shadows is not always a bad thing. This can be preferable to a scene with more detail, because the extra detail has been artificially extracted through exposure adjustments that come at the cost of contrast. When comparing specs, we often get caught up in pixels, zoom, focus, and other measurable detail, but contrast is really important to a good photo. Several of the iPhone photos you deemed superior come out looking a bit flat next to the Samsung (ironically, a classic Samsung issue only a few generations back). If you only pay attention to contrast while rewatching the video, I think you will see what I mean. I prefer the Samsung outside, for zoom, and in most of the bokeh shots. The iPhone is better in video, and indoors the lighting is better, so I'm not really sure which I prefer at the end.

Obviously they are already using the lidar sensor for it, but if you understand how the sensor works, you will know it's not that simple for edge detection. The lidar infrared sensor is just projecting a dot matrix which has a lot of gap in between, so it's just giving the camera a rough idea of the distance of certain points in the picture. For edge detection they need machine learning algorithms to do image segmentation on all the edges and lidar is only a hint for it because it's just a very low resolution info.

I own the S22 Ultra and it's my favorite phone out right now. I'm a nerd and keep up to date with the newer stuff. This is still king in my opinion.
As far as the shots in this video, the iPhone is forcing a more post-processing look by brightening every image in order to give a peaceful and happy vibe. It's forcing a mood over realism. The s22 seems to give a more natural look, which I prefer. If I want my images brighter, I will edit my photos. By default, I prefer my photos to look mostly how the scene looks in real life, which is not as bright as the iPhone makes it out to be. Most normal cameras match the look of real life, and doesn't force a tone/filter look that is ready to share on social media.
I also prefer the contrast in the s22 photos. Looks more realistic. I don't mind if that means some shadows being too dark here and there, because the overall image has a nice contrast. I dislike how the s22 tries to force skin tone to be as tan as it does. Samsung phones have always been known to over saturate. I think it could easily scale back saturation by 2-5%. In fact, there should be a saturation slider in the settings. Why that isn't a thing, idk. I will admit, there are some default photos on the s22 where I enjoy the saturation how it is. This might be a thing where AI should help alleviate saturation when it's being over used because I've definitely taken some photos where it was too much.
The s22 also has a remaster option after you take the photo which I've seen make some of my photos look brilliantly amazing. Not all cases, but in some.
I probably wouldn't mind a happy medium between the iPhone 14 and S22 Ultra, because I see some indoor low light shots in this video where the s22 shots could be a little brighter and do better on the shadows. Also, some outdoor shots look slightly too cool-tone on the s22, although this could be manually tweaked in pro mode if you want. Overall, I easily lean towards s22's camera from what I see in this video. Any camera that forces a bright and warm look for the sake of setting a good mood over what is actually real life is pretty much a no go for me.

While I do like the saturated look of the s22, you can tell that it is does seem to produce inaccurate colours, I think if you were the ones taking the photo, you'd be annoyed by how inaccurate it is, although to someone who hasn't seen what the photos meant to be, the saturated look is nice, although, put the iPhone into high contrast mode and I think you'd have the best of both worlds

Presets vs AI. AI enhances the image where as preset will just have pre defined color temps! It will never be accurate!

I think the Iphone 14 is like a QLED TV and the Samsung S22 is like an OLED TV when it comes to contrast. 😅

S22 Ultra kills the iPhone On Photos. IPhone has the slight advantage in videos because of the processing features the iphone 14 had but keep in account the Iphone 14 is new and the S22 ultra has been out since February. The S23 Ultra will be a better comparison for the iPhone 14 when it releases.

Great video! I found that I was prefering different phones in different lighting conditions. I still find the iPhone a bit too flat and matt for my tastes, but the Galaxy is a bit too far the other way and is a bit crunchy at times.
Can you do the same test but with the iPhone against the king of Android cameras, the Pixel? Maybe the 7Pro when it comes out in a few weeks?

Since i like cooler pictures and not warm pictures, i'll go with the S22U purely because of the cooler tones which yeah i know i can just edit them to make them warmer/cooler depending on which phone i had but still, a cooler tone is best for me. Plus i like a bit of depth and saturation/vibrancy/contrast in my pics which that means it's the S22U because with the iPhone it just looked plain and didn't have any life into it. With the iphone, idk why but the yellowish tint on the pics puts me off, it's like you edited the photo and made it yellow yourself lol which i know you didn't do but you get me

I'm not loving my s22 ultra camera since the August update, it seems like they went back to their old ways of crushing the blacks, making photos super vibrant and saturated and it's even been a bit slow to open the camera app.
