- This week we take a look inside the Nobby Opal number 3 from our ‘Pick a Winner’ competition.
It's a mixed-up-looking nobby but it showed a lot of potential.
From experience, these types of rough nobby can be unpredictable - from amazing to failing miserably. So join me to see exactly which way this nobby opal goes!

I've always appreciated the fact that Justin isn't above leaving some pieces more or less natural-it shows he has respect for the stone and it isn't all about the money.
It is about money though. He wouldn’t do this if he hadn’t already made tons of money.
Dang... I was seeing necklace earings bracelet set all from same stone
Justin, a piece like this would make a stunning tryptich necklace. The three pieces all coming from the same nobby. Either suspended horizontally with some gold chain, or suspended vertically. The magic of a piece like this is that they all belong together, not separated from one another. I have a seed necklace like this. It is almost like slices of a walnut and they are strung together and I get great pleasure in showing people that ask about it, how it can all be put together.
Insane cutting skills Justin. Great risk rewarded with great reward. I love what you did with this stone to show that a nobbie with somewhat limited possibility has very surprising potential gem quality. I truly love that you just finished it and left it as a specimen. Thanks Justin for all your time/efforts/content. Love it brother.
Glad you enjoyed it phoenix
@@blackopaldirect Absolutely loved it. You've not only shown it's gem potential but, preserved it as a specimen. Some collector will be blessed with that in the collection.
I actually like the look of rough opals. The contrast with the dull sand and potch make the color bars look like they're glowing. Also the rough look is something synthetic opals might have a hard time of copying?
Love that floral pattern, and Its kinda awesome that you just left them in their natural shape!
Absolutely gorgeous man, I love seeing opal like this in jewellry just as it is, it gives it an organic feel. Love ya work
Glad you like it
Wow love it stunning and love that idea also would love to see one more cut on knob side because it looks like color coming from sides and makes either a beautiful natural statement piece of jewelry earrings pendant set or specimen..love it
Yeah nice
Love watching a little cutting session with my morning coffee. Thanks Justin!
My pleasure!
How exciting to see you polish the specimen slices ❤. Excellent choice 🎉
Thank you 😋
Such a beauty, and I love the fact that you left the stone as it was once formed on the outside by nature itself but polished the surfaces of the slices to reveal the beauty inside! 👋💎👍Greetings to you all at BOD from me in Sweden 🇸🇪!
Thank you! Cheers!
@@blackopaldirect 👋💎👍
So glad you left this and just gave the slices a polish...absolutely stunning colours and patterns. Turquoises, blues greens and purples...all my favourites!
Excellent thinking, there. And a pleasure to watch a master of his craft at work on such an unusual piece...sensitive to the possibilities that present themselves along the way.
Many thanks Larry
The floral flash off the flat surface is amazing.
Wow, what a fun concept - loved the way this turned out!
Thank you Mitch
That being a specimen type Opal it would look incredible in a setting that opens up to reveal their beauty within. Something like a spherical cage that opens up in to three sections to show all of them at once. Little clasp to lock it tight. What do think of that idea? Silver or Gold doesn’t matter. Great locket style pendant.
true that
A very interesting one, with that solid colour that appeared also makes you wonder what it would have been like as one large stone
Yeah, seems it would have made a huge crystal out of that crazy blue and green color.
That's one thing I love about opal- you don't really know what you've got until you've finished working on it!
Definitely feels like the right choice. With its uneven sides but multiple slices, that is calling out to be either a specimen piece or a piece of unconventional jewellery. I'm glad you didn't chop it away into ovals!
Opal is mesmerizing. Every one you cut is a unique little universe of colour and pattern. I would never have guessed what was inside this nobby.
I almost leaped to my feet cheering when you decided to keep the opal as a specimen. Beautiful. Good job. Well done!!
haha Thank you!
They're unbelievably beautiful. I love the way you left them with just a little bit of a makeover. Natural beauty is beautiful!
Thank you so much!
When you opened that cut nobby, it took my breath away! Sparkling ocean inside a stone, absolutely spectacular!💖😍
The blue in those stones is absolutely stunning. Thanks for taking us along for this journey 😊. Going back to watch it again but this time have the sunglasses. Those stone are bright. Of the stones reminds me of the Prismatic Spring at Yellowstone.
So beautiful. Amazing that is a result of millions of years. Opals are by far the most stunning material of the earth.
That was a great decision to make Justin, shows your true love for opal, its not always about the money. But if you ever needed too, the gems I could see that you could cut from the pieces would be outstanding with a beautiful play of colour. Yet another great video Justin and as always thank you Justin and Black Opal Direct......... until next week.....
Opale to najpiękniejsze cudo natury,są piękne.Przebijają inne kamienie .Szkoda że nie można sobie taki malutki opalik kupić.💜🌞
Wow… 3 stunning pieces there Justin. Incredible collection. Thanks for sharing
Awesome award... and I'm so proud of you for keeping this as a specimen!! It's gorgeous! 👊❤
Maybe I'm easy to please, but the traces of indigo highlighted by the surrounding blue and green moss is just spectacular.
i am very happy you decided to leave the noble in its rough form. I've been watching you for a long time now, and i don't think i have seen you do that. That is a perfect specimen to show people of all ages what looks like in the rough and what it could have on the inside. and possibly someone might even want to buy it and set it in jewelry, too.
Justin, Number 3 was a really interesting Opal!! My goodness, the colour all the way through just kept getting better and better!! Best Regards from your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn. 💖 🇨🇦
Glad you enjoyed it!
The "Dissecticon" Opal! Your inside journey through a Nobby Opal.
Nice title of the video
This is by far my favorite piece probably because you can see the rough and the polished together.
You've done a brilliant job with this one, Justin! The colour is amazing, and I like that it wasn't cut into you're usual stones. They'd look great in a necklace, all three, next to each other, or as a long drop necklace, with them going down from each other. No matter what happens with these stones, they'll always look great! 😍
Glad you liked it!!
I love how you decided to leave the opal in its original form. God makes the most beautiful jewelry.
What a fantastic colour bar on that nobby, really wide! The specimen you ended up with is very special 😍
Beautiful! Those two pieces would have made gorgeous earrings too.
You made a great decision mate ! Always wondered why not leave them when nature made a beauty on its own !
Insane patterns, especially on the one with the smallest diameter! I think you made the right choice with that rock, but would never be able to stop there, myself. I wouldn't even be able to start there, as I tend to remove all sand from the outside first...
Pretty cool huh
Mother Nature: I took a drop of the ocean, and put it in a stone. What will you do with it?
Justin: Hold my fish taco!
I'm glad you left it as a specimen, so beautiful
Just wanted to say thank you for your inspiration and passion justin :) iv always loved opals but having found your channel few months ago its inspired me to take my passion more seriously ❤
Welcome Dragon
How could anyone not enjoy your work MAESTRO!!!
🙏
Thank you so much Justin! Right after you made the second cut I said I'd just polish them the way they are. Then poof like magic you did just that. 💜💜💜!
Those three pieces would look stunning mounted on a wide silver bracelet, as is 😍
I can't afford to buy it, but if I were to ever buy a black opal piece just for myself (as opposed to, say, jewelry to give to someone else) I would want this exact specimen. Absolutely stunning.
Ahhh I’m happy to see that you left the natural shape and sliced it so beautifully! Stunning!❤
Yes! Thank you!
This is an amazing piece, I love the rough exterior. I think the center slice slice would make fantastic pendant.
That color is so beautiful. It reminds me of the ocean. The lighter color being the shore and the darker color being the deep.
I swear, I just watched this again for a second time a day later, and I really do believe #3 just turned out spectacular ! The amount of gem quality Opal in that stone is just the bomb 💣! LOL !
(It’s either that or I’m just a sore loser haha)
Oh this one is exciting! Fingers crossed. Let's go in! Oh how gorgeous and unique...you did an amazing job with this knobby. Mind blowing! Justin you did it again...your skills are superlative!
Good choice. Beautiful as is.
A look inside a funky nobbie.
ooooH!! Nice. I think this is one of my Favorite pieces to watch you do. ✨For ME, the allure of Opal is the COLOR and the way it plays. I am less interested in "The Perfect Gem" and could just stare and Marvel for hours at a colorful Faced stone✨🪨🧐 Thanks SO Much for sharing this with us Justin
Perfect call!
Brilliant! Well done, Justin, and thanks for sharing!
Thanks again!
I am Brisbane born-and-bred watching all your videos from the Philippines (on the South China Sea). I love your channel coz I used to practice lapidary as a teenager. And its soooo educational 🙂
Wow, thank you I'm glad you are enjoying
I had picked number 3 at the start ! WOW what an Awesome Opal ! I agree with Justin to polish all 3 pieces as they are just be able to show their beauty !
I''m split on my reaction to making this a specimen. I love what it looks like, just 3 slices that go back together. But then I think of what awesome gemstones they would make. It's beautiful either way...
Yeah I was too but it is a nice change from the everyday cut stone
That's so cool! I love this approach. A different way to enjoy it
Amazing work...Wow! Love it.
unbelievable cool. i love the natural cut
Glad you like it!
Keeping this knobby as a specimen is good karma Justin. Its a beautiful stone.
Beautiful stone. Good choice
Scary for us, but the experienced eye sees another way. Each piece is beautiful. Thanks for sharing.😷⚒
Glad you enjoyed it
I absolutely love it!!! ❤
Wow! Beautiful 😍
Goes to show that Justin is not just about money; he's also about the preservation of one of the most incredible stones in the world, as well as an artist!
With all due respect, he messed up and fixed it the best way he could.
@@eloerch7 He messed up? I don't understand.
Beautiful!!!!!
Thank you for everything you do Justin I truly appreciate you, a good hearted person ❤, you also remind me of my own father wich is kinda crazy but in a good way, thank you again Justin, I hear you
👋 Great decision. History making...first vid with polishing without dopstick by hand. 🤩 ***** Thank you for that lesson.
Gorgeous!
Well Justin, if you stop cutting opals you can always become Rapper. Have fun, good job, thank you. A french fan.❤❤❤
Absolutely stunning 😍
Yep very cool!
Sounds like a great idea!
Just sliced my first 2000$ black opal and it turned out perfect. Thank you for all the tips and tricks Justin.
Nice
😮Awesome work as usual Justin.
The mystery was alive in this one! How fun =)
I would totally rather wear that then have it on a shelf somewhere, but I respect your decision. It is, of course, a remarkable thing of beauty!
The natural polished look of these opals is very attractive. It needs to be set just as it is.
Agreed
How about trying a copper setting for one of them. The copper with that colour would look amazing.
"Live edge" nobby! Awesome!
That is gorgeous ❤
Thanks
BEAUTIFUL OPEL......Thanks Justin.....
Shoe🇺🇸
😊 thank you for allowing me the pleasure to watch you work absolutely mesmerizing
Thank you so much 😀
Beautiful piece Justin!
Thank you kindly!
This was good judgement, I was thinking a pendant with matching earrings. But good to see them left as that are. Thank you Justin
Beautiful Justin think that was a pretty unique and neat desicion.
This was great 👍 cool to see a different kind of Opal polish from time to time
Glad you liked it!
Very Nice!!!
Phenomenal colour
Thanks🎉
Thank you so much Neil 🙏🙏❤️
Great idea, special piece 👍
Thank you
Just beautiful color...
That was a hell of a cut👍
That was a beautiful specimen, but all good with that 1!!!
BEAUTIFUL
Wow that is a beauty 😍
Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
@@blackopaldirect Cheers!
Am I the only one that wants to see a great set of 3 fully cut and polished stones?
I think this is amazing 💙💙💙
Wow, that's is a beauty. Love all the colors in it. Good risk. 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
