    The values on gems like this are always inflated. While gold has a market value, opals and other gems are only worth what a buyer is willing to pay. Why don’t you start talking about money after the stones have been sold and stop putting phony values on them. It’s getting old.

    What I don't understand is why the miners don't learn to cut. If they do the cutting in the off-season and sell direct to the end customer, they cut out the buyer and the cutterand the retailer and very likely double or triple their income.

    • @fightfiend
      @fightfiend Рік тому

      They need fast profit to pay for diesel, leases and machinery.

    • @tullochgorum6323
      @tullochgorum6323 Рік тому

      @@fightfiend Fair enough, but it traps them in a cycle of low returns - most of them seem to live hand-to-mouth and never achieve the financial independence that would justify such brutal working conditions.
      There's a documentary somewhere on UA-cam about a family of miners who do their own cutting and retail direct to end users. They were pretty prosperous compared to most, so it can definitely be done.
