      Just discovered you guys and really like what you're doing. If I want detailed specs and reviewer comments about things like the way the glove box opens and what material is used on the inside of the rear doors, I can find that somewhere else. But for an entertaining and straightforward comparison by two reviewers in one video, you're nailing it.

      Andreas Hartono same. CX-5 is my pick, I absolutely love the refinement of the CX-5 and the styling of it. I think it is much more refined feeling and looking compared to the XC-40z The XC-40 has great features and all, but the styling and colors are way too progressive for me. "No one" buys these cars for performance, and yet I was just at a BMW event with professional driving instructors driving their X2 suv going around an autocross track. Alot of wasted money on a Nationwide tour for 'no one'.
      And the US Volvo R-design turbo awd starts at $39.2K without options like heated steering wheel, premium sound, sunroof etc. Similar spec it will cost around10 k more than mazda

    • @TheBacontarian
      @TheBacontarian 6 років тому +6

      First off it's "R-design" trim
      And the prices are for similar features, which the Volvo has to be optioned to get to a similar level.
      The price you quote of $36k is for a non turbo fwd car. The equivalent Mazda in middle trim Touring would only be $26k and still be better equipped. The reviewers actually doing Volvo a favor, they used the top of the line Mazda trim and only the medium trim for the Volvo

    There was an irritating minor delay in pedal response. The start/stop function was far too sensitive and stopped the engine when waiting in the middle of a crossing. The absence of a joystick or alike to control the infotainment.

      Volvo practically invented Autobrake systems, and did invent the Blind Spot System and more- naturally it's going to work more efficiently.
      Reviewers are very rarely taught how to use their cars by professionals- like they'd jump out of a skydiving jet without a quick tutorial first, "Yeah I know how to use a parachute, I watched a youtube video once".
      Voice Control, Steering settings, Individual Drive mode, Polestar Tuning- and so much more was left out that would have made a difference on their opinions.

      You are right that Mazda has better reliability overall than Volvo. (Consumer Reports, JD Power and more). For example, JD Power says that there are 144 problems per 100 Mazdas vs 162 per 100 Volvos (all after 3 years of ownership). This is not insignificant, but neither score is that incredible here or even really that different from each other.
      Anecdotal stories of how well your specific car did is not important because it is not statistically significant. Even Lexus, the most reliable brand, makes a couple lemons. But they are still the most reliable brand.

    Most ppl complain about the center screen in the Volvo (All new models.) takes away attention from the road. They got the car all wrong. Most of the daily stuff, you're supposed to do with voice command. You never have to look away from the road. The stuff "you do have to set" in the center screen are things you set once. And...
    There are 3 main screens, It sounds on most ppl like they have a book to go through. You got the center screen with the 4 big boxes, from there you can swipe left and right once! There are no more pages.
    If you're cold? Press the voice command button, and say "I'm cold". And temp setting goes up one degree. (Or say "set temp to XX degrees" and the car makes it so!)
    Never loose eye contact with the road. To futuristic for some I suppose? ;)

      Even without voice, TWO whole taps at the bottom of the screen to change your temperature? The climate is ALWAYS at the bottom- and it takes me as much time in a Volvo to change the temp as it does in my Volkswagen- where I turn the climate- then choose my balance of feet/body airflow and the air speed itself. Three separate knobs that I turn, briefly looking at each to make sure I don't overdo it- as opposed to two-three quick taps on a screen.
      Different at first? Of course. More distracting? We're really splitting hairs.

It’s also worth noting that sunroof is a $1700 option so adding that to the CX5 would close the price gap some. I’ve also got a M2C so it’s awesome to see you guys reviewing some the cars in my garage.

    I tried the Volvo XC40 T5 trim (top trim using same engine as the model you tested) in Thailand 4 months ago and it had 3 settings for how much firmness you wanted from the steering. Soft, medium and firm. This setting can be adjusted on the settings on the display. panel.....I am not sure if this function is available for all models, but worth a try to try to change this setting if you buy/test the XC40. The steering was still a bit soft even in the firm setting though....

    The huge price difference comes down to the fact that it's the R-Design trim of the XC40. Compare the XC40 T5 AWD with the Turbo CX5 and that price difference comes down to only $500 USD after destination!! Mazda needs to cut this price by at least $2-3k IMO.

      Voice from the future: 2020 AWD T5 Momentum loses leather seats. Now an $1100 option. And don’t forget, standard on Mazda’s top 3 trims, lowest is $31. Also std on Signature and Grand Touring Reserve: heated AND cooled leather, premium sound (Bose), moon roof ( not panoramic), blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise. These all require optioning up the Volvo. The moon roof is nice on the Volvo, but a $1400 option on the Momentum. So yes, the T5 Momentum STARTS around $36-$37, but the one you WANT is $43-$45. I’ve driven them both this week (replacing a GTI) and will go with a CX5. It will likely be re designed for 2021 or 2022. Yes, some of the infotainment and such needs updating, but as someone else commented, that there even is a comparison video of these two vehicles says A LOT for the Mazda. I’ll search for a ‘Hyundai Elantra vs Audi A3’ video, but I doubt I’ll find one. There are several comparisons on UA-cam of Mazda vehicles with luxury brands besides this one. Cheers

      @@bringingbackgb I respect that, but most European cars people think of are German (Audi, Porsche, VW, etc...), these are Swedish, by a company that designed the roads in Sweden, and have invented almost all of the safety features used in vehicles today. They dont patent it because they want all cars to be safe, but they invent the 3 point seat belt we use today, the rear facing carseats, collision avoidance, well almost all of them really. They were originally an iron company, which is why they use the iron symbol as their logo... 40% of their frame is made with Boron Steel, one of the hardest steels manufactured in the world... there are volvos with over a million miles on it that can still run. That's a fact. Volvos are extremely well made, extremely reliable, and extremely solid. Its safety is utterly unparalleled. No one has died in the new Xc90 since its inception in 2016. They worked with orthopedic surgeons for 7 years to make the seats as ergonomically comfortable, good for your spine, and as safe as possible. When I say quality, I mean every aspect possible. Is the Mazda Cx-5 a wonderful, great vehicle for the money? ABSOLUTELY. But make no mistake, there are tangible, valid reasons why they Xc40 is more. By the way, they start in the low 30's... so it's not like they are stupid expensive.

To me I value Volvo because how much detail and work they put into safety and comfort, plus they look great and drive great too. Very comfortable drive with plenty of power as a supercharged 4 cylinder, so you get decent gas mileage.. and the quality and care they put into it is awesome. They have a team that goes and investigates the details of every single totalled volvo accident to determine what worked and what they can improve. Plus so much is standard, on the 40 you get apple CarPlay, android auto, back up camera, lane assist, collision avoidance, and 3 years of free maintenance, and more, all base. On the xc90 you also get pilot assist, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, blind spot with steer assist, auto dimming mirrors, homelink, 4 years of VolvoOnCall... I mean that's all standard on a base 3 row luxury SUV for $53k+... on a vehicle that has never had a fatality and is the most awarded SUV of the century. the value is there.

    • @tword5687
      @tword5687 5 років тому

      @@bringingbackgb I agree with what you have to say. What I think is that, are they quite as reliable as the older ones? I'm not as sure. But I do know that they are safer and nicer now. They look good and drive well, and they'll typically last as long if not longer as most decent brands. People always kept their cars for 6+ years in the 70s-early 200ps cuz they weren't that different. What is the difference between a 95 and a 2005? CD player and mor airbags? Now think of a 2005 to a 2015? HUGE difference. And even the 2015 to 2020 GIANT DIFFERENCE. So keeping your car a long time isnt as relative today. You get 3 years of free maintenance, 4 year 50k mile warranty.. if you get a certified preowned you get 5 year unlimited mile warranty that is extendable by another 5 years... pay it off, trade it in, or lease it.

    Great comprehensive comparison of the two vehicles guys! I think it’s super easy win for us to choose the CX5 because at the end of the day Volvo’s SUVs are trying to woo a person who wants to drive a Mazda, their target market is entirely different. It’s especially evident in the interior quality and their driving and steering feel (or lack there of). The Volvo market is the tier 1 luxury buyer who wants nothing less than a European brand so that they can hide in the trunk to wake neighbors up about flexing their new Volvo and don’t mind spending 10k extra for a brand/prestige/pedigree. At close to 40k this turbo CX-5 is trying to steal the “value-conscious” from second tier luxury SUVs like the Buick Essence AWD Turbo SIDI, Acura RDX SH-AWD, Infiniti QX50, and Lincoln MXC; all of which won’t actually set the buyer back $10k more when equipped with their respective AWD trims and turbo four cylinder engines. (I was genuinely surprised how many there where in this segment that cost the same as this Mazda while having comparable engine specs with close HP, marginally less torque but usually hitting peak at lower rpm)
    Nice intro too!

      Peder Hansen not based on the model used in the comparison. Based on the spec and options of the XC40 they used it would be $45,685 usd, and $38,480 usd for the Mazda. Plus the Mazda was the highest trim level with all packages included, whereas the Volvo has another level up (the inscription) and required several different packages and options. The XC40 is an excellent vehicle but in terms of value I don’t think it can’t beat the CX-5.

    • @jacobthompson1465
      @jacobthompson1465 5 років тому +1

      The Inscription and R-Design are both top of the line trims- one does not have a step up on the other- one is a sport upgrade and the other is a Posh upgrade. Neither are necessary for technology although they do include some package features of the Momentum trim as standard, IE Moonroof, soundsystem, BLIS, Keyless, etc. Taking a base AWD XC40 at 33K and adding 3-4k in the tech packages for $38K you're very well equipped and safe. Even the base Momentum has Carplay, Autobrake w/ Large Animal/Pedestrian/Bike detection, Lane Keeping aide, Backup Camera, RunOffRoadProtection, Touchscreen, Remote Start thru App, Key Fob, and more.

Keep in mind the Mazda CX5 Signature w/ the 250 turbo is not $10K cheaper than the Volvo (Momentum is about $33K). Every. Single. Smartphone.Works. Exactly. The. Same. You pull down at the top for flashlight, settings and more. In the volvo you either tap the tip-top or pull down in the same fashion as you do in an Apple or Android.
      With either system you have to learn where things are in the menus and either use a knob or touch screen to locate and use them. Touch screens where any option is 2 swipes away MAX and 2-3 taps away are far more intuitive (because we all have smartphones that work the same way) than a scrollwheel menu system. Both systems require less visual focus as you become used to them- but Volvo goes out of their way to teach you to use the Voice Control as opposed to the touch screen while driving.

      Mazda is rated #1 in safety now. We passed Volvo last year. Keep up.

      @@flyinghigh2178 mazda doesn't use boron steel but volvo does. Boron steel is the strongest steel known to man. The Volvo is safer

      Peder Hansen well funny you say that Peder; there are people who crash both. People like NCAP and IHS all over the world with equipment worth millions to ascertain exactly that! Amazing!! I prefer European cars any day and I agree they do tend to “feel” more solid in a tactile way than Japanese or American cars, but it no longer correlates with safety. The current generation of Mazda vehicles crash every bit as safely on balance as the best Europeans, as do many Japanese cars. Subarus seem particularly impact resistant.

      @Peder Hansen yea when people mention some cars that are safer then volvo and then refer to IHS and NCAP they forget NCAP and IHS weight the scores less on actual crashing and more on preventive measures.. in an actual head on collision at speed between CX-5 and a XC40 im taking the volvo..period cuz i know i will live, where as in CX-5 im probably going to get killed by the volvo entering the cabin space

    I had a Volvo sedan the last 6 years and switched to the 2018 CX5 GT (no turbo, at the time it was the top trim now it's in the middle). I really like Volvo. We looked long and hard at the XC40 which I had wanted all along, but I saved a lot with the Mazda and don't feel I've lost enough to be upset. I miss parking sensors, a more usable touchscreen while driving, and I lost the turbo -- but the CX5 is tuned well and feels like a driver's car more than the XC40 did, even though I lost some touches (which haven been addressed mostly with the GT Reserve and Signature trims it seems). The CX5 does have more cargo space which was a factor, in fact, it's on par with the Volvo XC60 in cargo space more so than the XC40. Save the money, get the Mazda, go on a swanky vacation instead.
