My wife just bought a 2023 XC40 B5 AWD Dark. I admit I had not seen this review until after the purchase, but she is loving the Volvo. It is her first SUV. She has been staunchly a small coupe or sedan lover, having owned a series of BMW 1 and 2 series, and the small MB A series. Supply availability had an impact on this, because getting a new car from either BMW or Audi was a many month situation (6 or more!), but she drove this Volvo and realized she really liked how it felt on the road, as well as loving the styling. Have only had it for about 10 days, but so far we are happy shoppers.
I have a 2021 X1 BMW, before this I had a 2014 X1 BMW that I traded in after 140k miles. Never a problem. I like the X1 because it has very good acceleration, handles very well, is easy to control in rain, snow and ice. I especially like the cruise control and the self-imposed speed limit warning - I set mine to 85 because it is very easy to lose awareness of speed in this car! The cost here in the US is also very reasonable, around $40k with a discount if you finance.
For the first time ever, i watched numerous car reviews either from the United States, from Britain esp Mat and from my country Malaysia, and every single one of them put the XC40 on top. I am an avid fan of Mercedes Benz and currently pondering on buying the GLC200, but now my head is turned to Volvo. What a car!
Even though I am a fan of the Mercs, the GLA is nowhere near these small SUV's..Mercedes should really revise the GLA to stand up with the competitors.
It's about new models. Last year's Q3 was clearly inferior to any of these three. But the new model Q3, along with the BMW and Volvo, are all very good. As Argen said, the GLA should be getting a new model, not just refresh, soon.
My 2 litre petrol BMW X1 x drive is averaging 38.8 mpg overall and has done 45mpg on motorways tested tank fill to tank fill. Volvo mpg is reputed at 29 mpg for similar vehicle.
There is no BMW or Audi or M. Benz or Jaguar owners who even THINK of comparing their vehicles to a … VOLVO! Volvo is there with Nissans and Fords and Buick! smh
BMW X1 gave me the best performance out of all of them (with the sports package). It's freaking me out looking at this video becuase I have the exact color as the BMW in this video and that one has the sports package. I had problems with the Audi's steering and while in Germany they just paint yellow lines for new lanes when they're doing construction so the car kept fighting me where as the BMW just vibrates the wheel if it thinks you're leaving the lane. The Benz also had some handling issues I didn't like and the price tag to have the exact same packages was substantially higher and I like the BMW interior better. I went with the X1. It's hands down my favorite crossover and I've driven quite a few crossovers. (The Volvo crossover was actually pretty nice also but I was buying American spec vehicles when I was in Germany and I couldn't find a Volvo dealership that would honor the American warranty out there where as the BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen dealerships had no problems with honoring the American warranties).
As a retired Volvo employee, I have owned 27 different Volvo models. Now at the age of 75, I ordered my first XC40 Ultra, but only with a B4 engine, which I also test drove. From what I know, I will appreciate the digital rearview mirror extra. You can see the whole world behind you, even in the dark. What made me order an XC40 in particular, apart from the driving experience, was that the car In a new American crash test, the Volvo XC40 received the highest rating. No other car model proved to be as safe. Since 1995, the independent American traffic safety institute IIHS (The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has conducted tough crash tests on the market's most popular car models.
Currently in an X1 but in October I’ll be in the Volvo. The interior is gorgeous and the exterior looks more stylish and purposeful than others imo. Just a shame the rear indicators and main brakes lights are still bulbs! Now the nerves begin as to whether I’ve made a mistake as the X1 is just a very good car, if a little too hard. The Volvo soaks up bumps and pot-holes much better. Thanks Mat. 👏👏
Just to note that the XC40 has an option to fold the back seats from the boot. So it is an extra point for the Volvo. The only problem I have is the glitchy software issues I’m having with the latest update. Hope Volvo will work on solving those problems.
The rear seats of the Volvo suck! They sit to straight up and are not adjustable, very uncomfortable, very hard with poor cushion not comfortable for any size passengers.
I own the XC40 & I love it! Mine is white with a black roof & it has floors they call Lava, which are like a burnt orange & they give the illusion of space. Plus, the safety of a Volvo. Win/win
I don't think any of these 3 will be a bad purchase. Comes down to personal taste and preference as all 3 have pros and cons. The Audi (in Blue) for me due to that lovely looking interior and sporty(er) handling
One thing I found when checking out the XC40’s back seat was how bulky the back doors are. You have to open them really wide to access the back seat! @carwow have you tried parking in a narrow space (perpendicular) and asked the back seat passengers to get out of the car, and managed to do so without damages?
Actually the transmission in the XC40 is the same as in the X1/X2. If you get the Polestar Engineered upgrade on the XC40, the map is much better than stock. Nice review in any case. In the UK you have far more engine choices than we do in the States. I have the T5 XC40 which I traded my Q5 for. Q5 was a much faster car, but very somber to drive. XC40 is just downright fun. For those fans of TopGear out of the UK, James May pointed out (correctly) that ultra-stiff suspensions and race set-ups actually can make a car less fun to throw around in the corners. Nothing beats uber performance (I would gladly trade the XC40 for a M3!) but in day-to-day driving the XC40 is just fun while keeping (somewhat) within legal limits on public roads. Stays a comfortable car when you just want to cruise or chill.
That would be too expensive. Once you started added more and more options on Volvo it actually becomes much more expensive than either X1 or Q3. Not sure about how UK pricing is, but in Canada Volvo XC40 top trim on par with Q3 45 Sline and BMW, Volvo you end up paying well over 65K CAD, especially if you want advanced LED options (which honestly is a must have). Q3 45 with Sline maxes out at 51K and BMW maxes out at 58K. Volvo is overall much more expensive.
Audi inundated the infotainment and cluster with digital dashes and went full screen set-up in the front; can't be bothered to put electrical switches/actuators for fold-down seats in the back. Bruh. I do quite like the Q3 over the X1. Would go for the Q3 over the other two since the X1 really doesn't seem to offer much as far as the detail department is concerned, and I already own '18 Volvo S90, so the Q3 would be a nice switch up from the XC40, but I do like the XC40.
I drive an Audi A6 and it is quiet, smooth, fast, sporty, and luxurious. I drove a Q3 as a loaner while they did my service and I wasn’t as impressed as he is. But now that I’m on the market for a small SUV, I’m going to check it out again.
This is a year old..i have the 2021xc40 r design, and i test drove same, including Lincoln.. The Lincoln has the luxry interior, by far the best. However, i chose xc40.. easy choice. Lincoln exterior is better than bmw, audi, but overall the xc was my top choice. Driving in eco mode is great, so dynamic and comfort is an additional plus. Interior is above basic, not luxury, like inscription, but sporty, which fits the design. The bmw reminds me of a short station wagon, and audi a bigger car( crossover). XC looks like an suv, but drives like a luxry car/suv/crossover, so i feel like i have the best combo. Also, the packages are priced nicely. Great review..thank you.

I would still take the Q3 happily. I like the tech and the design. This color was also great. Interieur of Volvo and the BMW look a bit dated and boring to me.
Nice comparison. I doubt you'd choose the Volvo with only the Momentum package. It's $51,000 (Canadian) and really terrible for that kind of money. Q3 all the way for me.
It's really pleasing that we now have a genuinely credible alternative to the ubiquitous German offerings. Volvo are now an excellent alternative....and it's no easy task to achieve that
Genuine question - what is the appeal in having isofix points in the front passenger seat? Seems more like a safety feature from Volvo to not offer that.
Great review, good to see new Q3 up against the BMW and Volvo. It was severely overdue. Totally agree about GLA. Slightly unfair not comparing apples for apples. Should have been R-Design vs S-line vs M-Sport, or Vorsprung vs Inscription Pro vs XLine
Can I just say I have never watch so many car review videos in my life. But this purchase was a big decision so research was necessary. I no your not viewing it but thanks to you I'm now the new owner of the Audi Q2 😎 my car will be ready in April and I soo excited.. Thank you so much Mat 😘
I‘d just get the new Q3, looks the best and has the best interior! The XC40 is nice too tbh. The X2 looks good but it’s a bit old. Maybe 1-2 years away from the new one
@@raftonpounder6696 Volvo sucks at off roading Audi is not a car for old people I think you might be old that’s why you think it’s a old persons car boomer!
I find it impressive that the BMW is still on par with these much newer competitors 👍🏿. Apart from a slightly excessive width of the infotainment panel, I prefer the Q3...but the X1 is roomier 🤪😵
I got the 2021 BMW X1 white metallic , convenience package including the panoramic moonroof (not showing here ) and the sport versión. It’s practical, sportily , very fast and fun to drive with the 8 speed automatic transmission. I love the simplicity of the dashboard and the lighting components related to the convenience package. I did not like neither the Volvo nor the Audi looks at all. Just my test! To this point not complains and just enjoyment with the 2021 BMW X1, lease including 3 years of free maintenance here in USA!
Got the X1 with the larger screen and sunroof, the x1 infotainment system is the best out of all 3. Much more practical with the wheel knob than the touch screen.
@@marksapollo nahh, BMW has it standard on even the 1 Series. Mercedes gives you the key or a plug that acts as a button, and Audi think this kind of retro is cool...
hope you like no light in the rear compartment, blind spots, a dangerous to use screen for everything on the dash and a sun visor that does not slide, and for all that money,no heated seats. Sorry I bought it.
Realistically I'd get a Lexus UX250h. Comparing the sportiness of the Q3 S-Line and the X1 doesn't really seem fair, isn't there an M Sport package that would improve the suspension?
I would go with the Volvo as well, in the video doesn't seem that much but when you see it in person it is great. The design is so muscular, nice clean Nordic design for the interior, ground cleareance is also higher then the other two. The Audi and BMW just look like some pumped up A3 and 1 series...the real SUV here is the Volvo, the other two more like crossovers.
as bmw fan i would say: Bmw is more practical and with m package better to drive and still cheaper^^ volvo also have much space so second..audi is small and yeah^^
XC40 likers like here Including you too Mat 😂 I mean Volvo just nailed it in this one about 8 to 9 inch infotainment system lmao. Future car forsure Thanks Volvo.
This is the first time someone's tested the backseats for practicality!! Good on you mate... for longer trips, i always hated it when the backseats can't adjust or recline. Drives me nuts!! It looks like I'd be going with the Q3 here... Thanks lots!!
I had the brand new Audi q3 fresh off the line when they redid the model- waited 6 months for it to come in. Absolute fnng nightmare of a car. Nothing worked on it. Dealership told me to turn off a portion of the safety features - it was causing all the issues. Car kept sensing traffic and coming to immediate stop when there was nothing around it. Took to dealership several times. In the end, i sold it, less than a year old. (My two previous vehicles were a Toyota Siena mini van that I kept for 10 years, and a Lexus r350 which i bought used a year old, and kept for 8 years.) My girlfriends brother bought the new q1? And had tremendous issues- but not with car stopping. His brand new car has spent weeks in the shop getting stuff fixed - one of his biggest problems was the cell phone connecting to the car - he is a real estate agent so this was important - his cell would never connect properly. Finally a friend of mine leased a q3 even after i told them of my issues (yah, you are a woman, there was probably something there when your car applied the emergency brake) and their car came to an immediate stop on the 401 highway, and almost killed his wife and kid. The technology on the Audi sounds great- but they have not worked it all out, and it was a disaster for me. I seriously suggest you find someone with these new Audi’s (not the older models 5 years ago - they worked great- i was convinced to go Audi because of all the positive feedback) and ask them of their experiences before you buy.

Nice comparison. I doubt you'd choose the Volvo with only the Momentum package. It's $51,000 (Canadian) and really terrible for that kind of money. Q3 all the way for me.
Volvo any day. Audi and BMW are ten-a-penny and just common.
IT IS SO HARD to make a good comparison, but u nail it all the time! Thanks for that. Greetings from Austria!
Volvo XC40 definitely my favorite, unfortunately I have to wait for five months after placing the order 'cause it's way too popular.
And, do you like driving it?
It's really pleasing that we now have a genuinely credible alternative to the ubiquitous German offerings. Volvo are now an excellent alternative....and it's no easy task to achieve that
Yes, the volvo is beautiful, you also get so much for the money
Genuine question - what is the appeal in having isofix points in the front passenger seat? Seems more like a safety feature from Volvo to not offer that.
Ι have to say that you didn't choose the prettiest Bmw X1 line and color. Anyway in this specific test Volvo is the best
BMW needs to update their interiors for these cars
No.its better to update the kidney grills ...bigger
Why?
@@RobertCraven70that's a joke about the new 7 series..
@@RobertCraven70 look up BMW 7series and X7 2019 lol
@@EqualsDeath Okay. I see. I like the interior in the X1.
Reaffirming why I bought the XC40 and how happy I am with this car!
Volvo for me, please. It looks the best imo. Actually I think that it's the most youth car of these three.
Audi Q3>Volvo XC40>>>>BMW X1 I am M fan but Bmw need to change this interioor.
Dude, you've got it backward.
@@ZoneCrasher not at all bmw fan
Agree, maybe volvo last
I‘d just get the new Q3, looks the best and has the best interior! The XC40 is nice too tbh. The X2 looks good but it’s a bit old. Maybe 1-2 years away from the new one
I thought the Audi was the obvious choice too..
Audi is for old people. Volvo is super-cool.
We got q3 just this week and it so amazing!!!
@@lalumierehealyourself4366 At this given moment we're finalising our colour for the Q3. Either Chronos Grey or Daytona Grey.
@@raftonpounder6696 Volvo sucks at off roading Audi is not a car for old people I think you might be old that’s why you think it’s a old persons car boomer!
In the Volvo there s a button at the opening of the truck to fold down the seats. Just like the x1. So no need to reach that far. 👌
Volvo owners will know... those seats are awesome.
winner for me Audi Q 3 , greetings from Lisbon .....
Might actually get the XC40. It's definitely on my list.
I find it impressive that the BMW is still on par with these much newer competitors 👍🏿.
Apart from a slightly excessive width of the infotainment panel, I prefer the Q3...but the X1 is roomier 🤪😵
My Q3 2017 its amazing. I love Audi
I'll have the Q3 in MHO its the best overall
My Q3 2017 its amazing. I love Audi
A few tweaks on the XC40 like the adjustable rear seats, quieter engine, infotainment small changes would be even more in front, still my favourite
Dacia duster? Where is that hiding?
Maybe in the dealership cuz no one wants them
We'll have a glass of what you're having!
carwow the elite of the elite own a duster, to be honest could be comparable to a rolls Royce
@@rolandkato8978 lol
“Bad news, it’s delayed!”
Got the X1 with the larger screen and sunroof, the x1 infotainment system is the best out of all 3. Much more practical with the wheel knob than the touch screen.
I have the Q3 and for me is better than the others.
I would love a Volvo XC40 please...😁 the car of my dreams!
Did... Did Mat actually have to use a KEY in the Audi??
Retro...
A Tuaima Of course mate, it’s an Audi? Want keyless entry that’ll be an extra £500... knowing Audi, Audi is another word for rip off.
@@marksapollo after Apple, yes hahaha
marksapollo it’s an option in literally every German car unless it’s £40,000. 🤦🏻♂️
@@marksapollo nahh, BMW has it standard on even the 1 Series. Mercedes gives you the key or a plug that acts as a button, and Audi think this kind of retro is cool...
Three beautiful SUVs, I hope the winner Volvo XC 40 is reliable.
Had a V40, XC60 and just ordered a Q3. Being a BMW driver doesn't appeal so I won't ever be getting one of them! Well done Matt 👍
The Volvo XC40 is absolutely BEAUTIFUL and significantly cheaper than these counterparts. Absolutely in love with this car 😍
I like Volvo exterior. It's AMAZING. I'm buying this one hands down.
Q3 interior is really nice though.
hope you like no light in the rear compartment, blind spots, a dangerous to use screen for everything on the dash and a sun visor that does not slide, and for all that money,no heated seats. Sorry I bought it.
@@tcfencing9772 all those are optionals, it's your fault you didn't buy them, not volvo's.
Realistically I'd get a Lexus UX250h.
Comparing the sportiness of the Q3 S-Line and the X1 doesn't really seem fair, isn't there an M Sport package that would improve the suspension?
For this time, I love volvo
I and like Volvo🙂
I would go with the Volvo as well, in the video doesn't seem that much but when you see it in person it is great. The design is so muscular, nice clean Nordic design for the interior, ground cleareance is also higher then the other two. The Audi and BMW just look like some pumped up A3 and 1 series...the real SUV here is the Volvo, the other two more like crossovers.
2:20 7:47 yeyyy yeyyy why do you guys use two different volvo's and bmw's for filming??🤔
The rear seats in the Volvo can be folded down electrical too
Looking at purchasing one of these on sat (inscription) I believe the electric fold down is an extra cost is that correct?
I'll go for the Volvo with the Audi interior please and thank you.
My thoughts exactly. That would have been a dream come true.
As a big Audi fan I have to say.. the Volvo is an amazing choice too. I would left the BMW for last place from the three.
as bmw fan i would say: Bmw is more practical and with m package better to drive and still cheaper^^ volvo also have much space so second..audi is small and yeah^^
@@saevitumhd7422 but imagine to buy 2019 x1 and it's already look old
@@SS-rn4oh and? its not looking old..its just the bmw style^^ some people like it some doesnt...
I was thinking about these cars of which one is the best and of course carwow had a video about and yeah j prefer the Volvo too. 😅
were getting a volvo xc40 bursting blue colour can't wait we got 2021 r design
XC40 likers like here Including you too Mat 😂
I mean Volvo just nailed it in this one about 8 to 9 inch infotainment system lmao. Future car forsure
Thanks Volvo.
This is the first time someone's tested the backseats for practicality!! Good on you mate... for longer trips, i always hated it when the backseats can't adjust or recline. Drives me nuts!! It looks like I'd be going with the Q3 here... Thanks lots!!
Audi is the best car
Volvo wins hands down!! Saving up for one... one day it will be mine.
(My two previous vehicles were a Toyota Siena mini van that I kept for 10 years, and a Lexus r350 which i bought used a year old, and kept for 8 years.)
My girlfriends brother bought the new q1?
