I’m physically disabled. I’m unable to lift my right leg. A bicycle style pedal drive would be more likely to work for me. I can build my own drive if I really feel the need but I’d be much more likely to buy a trolling motor. If I ever lose the use of my legs completely, I still want to use my kayak. Open deck space is really more important for me because I frequently cramp up and have to stretch my legs out. Good video Aliex!
First time out in my Predator PDL I landed a 100 lb tarpon. There were countless times in the hour long fight that would have ended badly in a lesser kayak. I also make 5 to 10 times more casts due to always having my hands free and not having to mess around with anchoring. Sometimes fishing is a numbers game. That said, I landed a ton of really nice fish with my paddle yak, you just need to be able to get out on the water. The pedals just open up new/more opportunities.
I have a hobie. Actually went back to paddle kayak with topwater 120 simply because its maintenance free and where I like to fish is prone to breaking drives LOL trees stumps etc. But if ocean fishing and deepwater fishing then I like pedal drives it's mainly just your budget
Bought my wife and I kayaks (PADDLE, not Pedal) with the intentions for leisurely excursions on the river with the pup and to get out and fish. I got a 12' and hers is a 10'. Fishing in any sort of current, or with any sort of wind (you will be blow around) is a flipping nightmare on a kayak. If you can't afford the pedal, make an obvious and clearly defined upgrade path into one and in the meantime get a detachable anchor system and anchor trolley as you'll need it...
Good video Aliex! I get the same thing as well people stopping me all time they want to know about my kayak. My baby is worth all the money. Being out there in the water is my therapy whether I catch fish or not.
I agree! It is so much easier to fish with the pedal drives vs paddle. The only downside to pedal drives is that the accessory tracks that you will use most, are in bad places. I can't find anywhere to track mount a depth finder or extra rod holders in which my legs or knees don't hit what I have attached to the rail track while peddling. It may be kayak specific though...mine is a Native Propel 10 but it is fairly wide.
Just bought an Old Town, Topwater 106 PDL... Took it to the bay yesterday...It was windy AND wavy... the Kayak Handled it PERFECTLY. I LOVE my Kayak...it is worth EVERY PENNY!!!
My fear is leaning and flipping the kayak. If I have hundreds of dollars of tackle and my phone I can not risk capsizing. Plus some of the rivers I fish can be dangerous.
100% worth it! Instant hands free reverse is what ultimately led me to go with the Old Town topwater pdl vs a Hobie, and the price, I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. Thanks for the videos Aliex, you really helped me with the decision to upgrade last year. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks for this video, I'm getting into kayak fishing on a cheaper sit on top paddle kayak and quickly realizing the benefits of a pedal driven one, especially on the river that I fish with strong current.
I can get a electric motor amd battery for $300 or gas engine motor for $300 … pedal kyaks u pay $500 +for the pedal … u can buy a gas and electric motor with battery with that money
I put a trolling motor on mine as it was cheaper, I want a hobie but in Canada they're over $3000, for that price I can get a used boat motor and trailer, I love the trolling motor set up
Another benefit of a peddle kayak system is you can bring a paddle with you to increase your speed by peddling and paddling. Two propulsion systems equals twice the speed.
I had a Hobie Tandon and I added a 45# thrust trolling motor. Mounted it on my starboard side. I could stay about4 hours out to sea. My peddles or trolling motor would let me go same speed! Yes well worth the cost
I have a Jackson paddle kayak I’ve had for a couple years that works great it just gets a bit aggravating if the wind or current picks up. Thought about a pedal kayak but they are just so much heavier !!! It’s so easy for me to throw mine in my truck and get in any little pond I just drag it in the grass. These things weigh like 150 lb
I believe most people transport the drive and the kayak separately so then the kayak by itself would be the same weight as a non-pedal kayak. Then I’ve seen where they put the kayak in the water and then put the drive inside the kayak. I am thinking about getting an old town PDL 120 sportsman but the cost might be the prohibitive factor for me as the pedal drive alone is $1000.
Kayaks with the Hobie Mirage drive is a breakthrough in the kayak industry. Personally, I wouldn’t have a kayak without the Mirage drive!! Hobie engineers are very smart and have produced a miracle. I have 5 Hobie kayaks and the other brands don’t even come close.
I got the Hoodoo Impulse 120 and I love it! Helps me get across the lake in no time. I only use it in lakes though, no use of it in small creeks or rivers where you have to turn a lot.
Pedal kayaks ate a game changer when it comes to being in areas with current or fishing in the wind and especially when your fishing trolling fisheries. I fish bass and pedals are nice but not a deal breaker but when I'm trolling for kokanee I wouldn't want to do it without a pedal yak. I can easily run two rods and mess with my fish finder or gear without disrupting my fishing.
It is worth it! anything 12-13 foot with 33 width is a good start for beginners. Calgary Alberta Canada we rarely have any good paddle sport boats that has combination of three (rudder direction control, foot pedal and hand paddle) option to keep oneself busy and entertained in the waters. Originally I wanted to go on a solo trip and loved the boat style.
Sold! I love both river yaks and sea yaks but my shoulder issues keep me from going out much. I love to hike in mountain woods more than anything but since I’m in FL I need a different outlet. I love that this could be more keg intensive instead of arm intensive for me.
Id love a pedal drive for windy days on the lake. And not having to anchor so often. Along with being able to cast for often. The main thing I dont like about them is having the drive system sitting right in front of me though. Especially if you have the drive pulled up due to being in shallow water. I really like having a nice open deck in front of me instead of a bunch of clutter.
Si senor!!! Definitely worth it!!! My 2 cents, get a cheap kayak at first make sure you like fishing or kayaking before you go and spend that money for a pedal one. 👍 check out the edits on these videos tho!!!! 👍👍👍👍🍻🍻🍻
Kayak fishing with no pedal is usually a complete pain in the ass. So much time spent on getting to the spot and also getting a good positiion to fish.
I fish on a regular kayak And I love it It has its struggles at time But it’s worth it I get a full body workout as well I fish by the Queen Mary in Long Beach
Alex I'm glad I made the choice I did. A feel free moken 10 1/2' my feel free side mounted transom, for the 2.5 Suzuki, and it's very stable, but went with a side mounted outrigger. I can enjoy boating and fishing. I saved in steps for the boat, then the motor. But your reviews and info, made me decide on my vessel. I only weigh 150 lbs, so I plenty of room, and at my weight she moves. Be safe, bro..
Been in paddle yaks all my life up to month or so ago. Now in hobie outback mainly due to neck (C6/7) shoulders gone bad. I am not too experienced in the pedals? But my thoughts are a lot same issues I faced with paddle I face with pedal? Winds still a wench! Just like the paddle. Still use a sculling paddle to stay in position with hobie as reverse involves yanking a cable? PDL prop would be easier I think? But never been in one. Pedals are certainly easier but ain't end all to be all; a lot of same issues. Glad I did my time in the paddle though kinda like learning to shoot iron sights before getting a scope.
I love all the good info you put out for the public who would otherwise wouldn’t have any idea about a lot of this. But I also love hearing your pronunciations; I’m super southern and people say that about my accent too so please don’t take it as negative, as I’m always entertained by you.
This summer I am going to attempt building a shift enabled pedal-powered pleasure craft. I figure if you can shift gears like a bicycle you might really be able to get some speed with ease.
I had over 10 years in a paddle ocean yak br fish yaks. My 2nd yr in pedal yak. Trade offs. Paddle light bulky peddle bulky heavy now need trailer. On the water paddle easy goes almost everywhere pedal more restrictive . So after all that yes worth it thank you
I have to say I love my bonafide ss127 with trolling motor. Super great stability and fish ability. Down fall no pedal drive, it sucks when you drain battery and got paddle that barge 😂. I’m waiting on real good reviews on vibe shearwater 125 and demo it myself. If I don’t like it, going pick up native 12.5 max. Reason I don’t want a old town ipilot, I’ll would be in the same spot I’m in with my bonafide.
kyle you are 100000% correct on all that, the ss127 with a motor is the best kayak there is.. well fighting with the autopilot... the shearwater my only concern is that it may be slow...but bixpy will help a lot...can't wait to review it. slayer max is an amazing boat! and you have so much options to rig it up!!!
Aliex Folgueira what is the fast you got the bixpy up to? I know you do a lot bay and offshore fishing. I use my kayak for bayou, skinny water, backwater bass fishing. places where you can’t really get a bass boat into and also marsh fishing for specs, redfish and bass. I been flipping between putting another 24v trolling motor or torqeedo ultralight 1103 on next kayak. Use the motor power get me where I want get to. Then use the pedal drive, paddle or push pole move around in that area, not kill battery.
Fishing; I think it gives you the opportunity to catch more fish. With the wind blowing and the current pushing you, all you have to do is adjust the rudder and keep the same desired angle to work the bank while casting. If your working against the wind and current then your pedaling and adjusting the rudder as you work the bank casting. Good video Aliex. I'm adding another yak to the fleet. Want to guess if its pedal or paddle?
Aliex Folgueira haha I was waiting for you to say something about the “Good” video 😆 I already have a motorized yak/solo skiff I think the Solo needs a remote trolling motor then it’ll be a fishing beast but until then... I don’t like taking it out when it’s too windy because I’m reaching for that paddle. I did finally get the Lightning yak. I did a demo on the Bonafide Kayak and thought wow this is a “Good” kayak and what would make it “Great” is a mirage drive option. So when I saw the Lightening initially I thought wow that is a great looking yak; the front from the Bonafide; the hatch from the PA and the rear rudder like the New outback and PA; sold the Jon Boat and finally got to order one. That new Vibe looks awesome too. That might be the next one 👍 I’m waiting for that “Great” flipping video on the new Vibe. #getoutthehousegofish
from Canada here and I am having a hard time understanding why they are so expensive ? so basically the same price I can get a boat with a trailer for around the same price is the plastic they use laced with gold ?
the pedal drive allows you to fish faster cover more area in a shorter time, I have seen guys that make fast runs with them, not really my thing I like to chill but they c
Bro be honest with me if you choose on kayak that had to be good all around fresh water inshore and ocean and it was stable safe great for fishing had all the bells and whistles didn’t flip on you which one would u get
I fish from a Bonafide SS127 and i used to have a Jackson Cuda HD. I never had a problem with it. They do make power poles and anchor wizards for anchoring... so the whole positioning thing is a non issue
A cheap paddle kayak will get you onto the water. A quality paddle kayak will get you onto the water further. A pedal kayak will get you onto the water to go even further. Hands free fishing was my priority. I fish a lot of docks and bridge pylons so the reverse pedal drives are fantastic.
Knees. If you have knee issues, you likely do not want a pedal drive. Or at least try one out for a full day and see how you make out. I know if I had one at this stage, I would need to sell it. No way my knees could handle much of that beyond very slow and casual use.
Hi Alex. Yes. I think pedal kayaks are worth it if below $1500. But personally, I think companies who make pedal kayaks over $1500, I call it “price gauging”. That’s just my financial parameter that is.
Aliex Folgueira Yes. I totally see all the R & D that’s been done. But for an example like Cycling, I have a handful of bicycles in my garage ranging $1000-5000. I’ve been riding bikes for 30 years. Ever time I walk in to my garage, I usually pick the lower priced bikes. Why? Because it still works just about the same. Mind you, the higher end ones may be a bit lighter and the mechanisms may work a little more precise. But nothing that are a real game changer. I’ve heard and listened to All the companies Hype about their new products for a long time now. I’ve since stopped listening to them. All and all, I just look for something that works well enough to Enjoy the sport. Still love watching your vids to find out what new products are out there.
Fishing Rod Yup. My sentiments exactly. I just want something that’s durable, affordable and mechanically similar to the higher priced brands which will afford me that Dependability in the product I choose. Thus, the analogy of the the higher end bike component Shimano XTR vs lower end Deore version and the Hobie 360 drive vs other drives; I’m still out there biking or kayaking and Having Fun. Yes. I do have a spare prop blade tho. 👍
LOL I actually have the Sun Dolphin Phoenix 10.4 shown in the video at :42 l’ve probably put a good 250 miles on it. It’s been the best $179 I’ve ever spent.
i have a sit on top pelican. 2 of them actualy. got em a few years back from dicks for 150 on clearance and they were the last 2 they had. they were origionaly 300. so i have 2 sit on top yaks i have rigged now for fishing for the price of one. super awesome score. BUT, im ready to upgrade to something like this. they arent that stable, theres no stadium seat so my butt and back hurts after 2 hours or so and i fish a good bit and i know it will money well spent for me.
If your paddling.... your not fishing. It was a no brainer for me. I had my feelfree lure 11.5 for a year without pedals. I'm in the ocean near channels alot, for this pedals is a must! I was having to reel in my line to reposition my boat every time i had large wakes coming my way. best 1k i have spent in a while.
I am considering buying a pedal kayak ,but hesitant because I use my kayak a Aqua Glide Blackfoot for fly fishing and my concern is my fly line getting tangled up on the pedals. Any thoughts about how practical fly fishing out of a pedal kayak would be appreciated.
How is your shearwater holding up compared to other pedal drive kayaks? Been working in your neck of the woods and killing me now having my sea ghost 130 down here.
They're just summer toys for calm water and they're all for fishing, nothing for long trip leisure kayak where you sit low in the hull and navigate. Instead, you sit like a King, exposed to cold wind, probably rain, and no body protection against the elements or choppy water on times when a warm day turns into a blizzard and you have no cover. I would like to try them on rough water, wind and rain, etc., to see if these are really worth it. I prefer canoes where the hulls are high, you sit in half way and have some protection against the elements, canoes are open and take a little choppy water. However, whatever water that goes in is a problem because there is hollow floor where you can get the water out with a small bucket. So, all in all, the one person paddle kayak is still the best because it has a front/back fibreglass cover where you sit inside, all legs protected against elements, rough water, wind, rain, etc., due to the design of entry and a special rain coat (jacket) that wraps all around the entry hole and tightened it. Splashed water cannot enter the hull through the entry hole, where you sit. But, with a pedal kayak, all this is not possible on rough water to 1 meter waves such as some large lakes do attain choppy water when the wind is strong during a change of climate (cool change) and the weather then turns nasty. How will you protect yourself and make it back to shore? Like I said, it's a summer toy good for still water, forget about the fish, it's safer to fish from the banks or a jetty.
I think you are 100000000000% wrong! I have put my kayaks both pedals and paddle only thru all those "nasty" conditions you described and they did well, maybe watch more of my videos or pay attention to the broll of this one
@@AliexFolgueira Yes, I agree with you on watching more videos, but none shows a kayak in choppy water. All videos are taken on pacid waters. I went to check some kayaks from a local store and asked the staff there to admit, do these go well on stormy waters and they said that the answer is no because stormy waters means choppy water and water lapping into the hull. They even asked me who told me that they're okay in rough water, and I mentioned UA-cam. And they shock their heads and said, have you seen one being used on choppy water on UA-cam? And said no. The return answer was, don't believe anything said on UA-cam, then ended the conversation with, have you tried it with a canoe? I said, I have an inflatable canoe named Aquaglide Columbia, it takes rough water well but not choppy water... And her said, see? They're not designed for rough water, only for fishing on calm water. So, I was right all along. We have a massive 83 + kilometers long lake snaking around mountains and some sections are 5-6 kilometers wide where these areas are often subjected to 1 meter waves on windy days that, even my Salem speed boat takes water overboard if stopped in those sections where strong wind cause waves. Google Lake Eildon.
Can you pull up the pedal system when out on the water and switch to a paddle? River i go to has areas that getting extremely shallow where the propeller will drag on rocks
Nice video bro, i`m looking to buy one to fish in the sea, i was there are some that are long and slim and other are short and wide, which one work best for fishing? what are the differences between theese 2? thanks!
feelfree lure 2 tandem with overdrive, i dont think you would have an issue with the hobie compass duo, it is super stable too and it has two drives more $$ thought
Hey Aliex, yes please make a video comparing pedal with motorized kayaks. I like the speed aspect of the pedal, but am concerned about less deck space in front of you and where do you put a larger fish when you catch one?
If I'm going to buy kayak I want a the one that has propeller so my hands can do something else. Propeller should be faster too. It's also a very good exercise for my legs blood circulation.
Finally purchased a peddle drive. I know I’m a year late to the peddle party lol. The new Bote Rackham aero+pd was my final choice. Thank you Aliex for another great vid
You must watch the pro angler review, it is hilarious! Bro talks like it's being compared with a 25' bow rider. Look how it tips over when I stand up and lean over the edge!!! It's priceless!
Just wondering which kayak you would choose between the Hobie compass and the old town pdl 106? Using for some saltwater fishing mostly in shore Bay Area with strong winds and currents. Thanks 😊
I can see getting a pedal kayak, so I can pedal and paddle for leveling up my fitness overall, especially since I'm a pinche gordo and have that opportunity to potentially fish and take it in rivers, lakes and ocean.
After a couple years paddling I recently ordered the Old Town Sportsman Bigwater PDL. Any suggestions what I need to attach my lowrance hook2 to the mounting tracks on the bigwater? Recently subscribed, love your stuff.
Pedal kayak prices are continually coming down in price. Their versatility and efficiency of use are worth consideration depending upon the type of fishing and location. That said, I would try to purchase the lightest pedal drive kayak that is relatively easy to paddle in case of drive failure. I sold my Hobie OB in favor of a Bonafide and placed a Bixpy on it, which works more like a power “assist” trolling motor at about the same weight as a pedal drive. The resale of the high quality ocean ready OB took care of most of the cost of the new 127 and the Jet. Each kayak excels in their own special fishing applications but remain good for multiple applications. One exception would be that I would not fish offshore in the Bonafide.
WESTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT thats my favorite setup bro, well fighting hard with the 120 autopilot, ss127 MOTORIZED it is an exceptional fishing kayak, love that thing
I don't understand , I went through a ton of comments but didn't see anyone talking about how deep the water should be. for me I live in Nebraska so I am mainly putting in on the river and heading down stream until I get to some backwaters but the river itself is shallow more often than it is deep. so would it still be worth it to buy pedal drive ? I would love to get one , but there is not much lakes to fish around here that haven't been overfished so a guy has to get creative and fish the rivers backwaters .
Alex, I am seriously considering the new vibe shearwater however the peddle drive is only forward movement. This is making me lean towards getting it with the bixby jet instead. Thoughts??
English: Hello Aliex I'm JuanJo from Uruguay Very good your video about the KyK pedal. A query, the fins, can also go backwards? In the 4.35 minute you mention going back, but I don't know if you mean elice's or both. I'm starting to look at this type of KyK and seeing which one is better, it seems to me that the one with fins but the one with elice I see the advantage of going back.
Alex, can you recommend a non-pedal fishing kayak for someone who wants to get into kayak fishing. I’m looking for a solid reliable paddle kayak and then if it grabs me I’ll have no issue upgrading down the line
Aliex Folgueira I’m looking at a feel free lure 11.5 right now. It looks like a nice kayak to maybe get started. It’s $800. I don’t mind spending some money but the prices can ramp up quickly
Thanks Aliex💐 I have a question please: tips to avoid motor sport people in the open water like jet ski or speed boats! They really scare me when i saw them in the sea even with all my saftey gears.
it is very very hard to avoid, jet skis go everywhere pretty much, for boats, maybe shallower waters?? but if you go on open waters, you will see boats, there is no way to avoid them
Great coverage from all commenters here! One thing, be always looking over of your shoulder, so you can be prepared. Have on hand (if time allows it), your horn, flare, mirror (the best when sunny) or an extra flag to wave in case your's kayak is fixed (shouldn't be) but don't assume/relay only on this, and that's it, prepare to jump out of the way (wait for the right moment) when you know there's no other option! Well that covers a direct course of travel toward you. Now if it is traveling from moderate to fast depending of size, relatively close to you; do, seat to lowest position (on deck/floor) and face (your kayak) the direction of the after-wake waves with your bow (preferable).. Do not lean and be ready..! I'm positive you know most of this, but little details can go a long way. By the way, luck is the best companion... Be safe mate!
Oh one thing that occurred to me, is setting a perimeter.. Not literally, but you can use some of the buoys that divers use and have a colorful flag (can say "slow down".. but do it on your own risk, lol; you might get more wake from jerks) approximately 100-200 ft form where you going to be anchored. Now, if you are moving..well forget it. But it is good if you are fishing channels or creeks with limited visibility. Never set it on the main way or close to the center! The bad part is that you have to carry 2-4 lbs extra for one or up to 8 lbs for two. What do you think?
Hello Aliex, your videos is really amazing Bro! I'm having a back pain using kayak paddling lately, my kayak model is similar to Native watercraft slayer propel 10", and today i'm wondering what i'm doing wrong, now i'm looking to find a correct position if really exists one. Keep doing this great videos Bro.
Seems like a Craigslist trolling motor and small deep cycle battery are much cheaper than the $1000 premium they charge for a pedal kayak. I would gladly pedal if they were at all reasonable. When you can skip the pedaling, for 1/4 the price its a hard sell.
@michaellowe3665 In my state they force you to buy a biyearly registration for any watercraft with a motor. That's right they charge a gasoline yacht the same fees they charge canoe with a trolling motor. It's an abusive law and that is a case where the pedal kayak would come in handy.
So Alex... This reasoning excludes Vibe’s Shearwater because it doesn’t have a reverse? - you seam to had been Pro Vibe in past videos. Also, I’m still confused about which drive system is better. Pedal/propeller vs Hobe style fin drives
I was already sold. I get tired in my arms when I paddle and I want to relieve them. So I was mostly watching this to see if there was some strong argument against doing so haha! That said, I like kayaking in really shallow waters. Today I was at a spot where I could reach the bottom with my feet while still sitting in the kayak. Are there any other propulsion systems better suited for those conditions?
Genial hombre! I've been thinking about getting a pedal kayak for a long time and this video is like you were talking to me lol I literally have a spread sheet with all the models, price, weights, availability and the "does it flip" rating from your videos haha, after all, I don't have a good balance so for me the kayak being stable is the main concern. So if you could spend $2500, what would be your top 3 pedal kayaks (not mentioning the Sportsman MK lol) based on stability??? Mine so far are the OT 120 PDL, Malibu PDL and the Passport 12
Hey bro, I really need a breakdown of motorized vs pedal kayaks, especially as far as boat positioning is concerned. Looking to buy was ASAP, any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Why maybe pedal drive yaks may not work for you? Watch ua-cam.com/video/PEcpCSA87rA/v-deo.html

Brooo 100# tarpon first time in the predator!!? That's legend status right there
I have a hobie. Actually went back to paddle kayak with topwater 120 simply because its maintenance free and where I like to fish is prone to breaking drives LOL trees stumps etc. But if ocean fishing and deepwater fishing then I like pedal drives it's mainly just your budget
sometime simple is better
Bought my wife and I kayaks (PADDLE, not Pedal) with the intentions for leisurely excursions on the river with the pup and to get out and fish. I got a 12' and hers is a 10'.
Fishing in any sort of current, or with any sort of wind (you will be blow around) is a flipping nightmare on a kayak.
If you can't afford the pedal, make an obvious and clearly defined upgrade path into one and in the meantime get a detachable anchor system and anchor trolley as you'll need it...

It may be kayak specific though...mine is a Native Propel 10 but it is fairly wide.
was it kayak specific? or were you able to eventually do it?
for fishing do all the difference, 100% yes, worth it
That's right, don't forget bird watching too
Thanks
Just bought an Old Town, Topwater 106 PDL... Took it to the bay yesterday...It was windy AND wavy... the Kayak Handled it PERFECTLY. I LOVE my Kayak...it is worth EVERY PENNY!!!
106 pdl is an excellent boat compact but fast! Happy you are enjoying it! 😎
Keep the videos coming!
always happy to help :) that topwater 120 pdl is a great value for sure, great boat, instant reverse is huge
For me...the number one reason to have a pedal kayak...WIND!
Big one !
a good anchor is there for that too
Yeah man, wind and current are a nightmare if you plan to fish.
@@richyoung4051 wind usually means waves and depending on your body of water, Wind + Waves (+ Current?) = dicey situations to anchor up in...
Thanks for this video, I'm getting into kayak fishing on a cheaper sit on top paddle kayak and quickly realizing the benefits of a pedal driven one, especially on the river that I fish with strong current.
Bro, it is about fishing and the drive makes it easier
I can get a electric motor amd battery for $300 or gas engine motor for $300 … pedal kyaks u pay $500 +for the pedal … u can buy a gas and electric motor with battery with that money
I put a trolling motor on mine as it was cheaper, I want a hobie but in Canada they're over $3000, for that price I can get a used boat motor and trailer, I love the trolling motor set up
Motors for the win!
Another benefit of a peddle kayak system is you can bring a paddle with you to increase your speed by peddling and paddling. Two propulsion systems equals twice the speed.
I love pedal kayaks. I use them when I’m in Austin, Tx
Boom 💥
I had a Hobie Tandon and I added a 45# thrust trolling motor. Mounted it on my starboard side. I could stay about4 hours out to sea. My peddles or trolling motor would let me go same speed! Yes well worth the cost
I have a Jackson paddle kayak I’ve had for a couple years that works great it just gets a bit aggravating if the wind or current picks up. I got the Hoodoo Impulse 120 and I love it! Helps me get across the lake in no time. I only use it in lakes though, no use of it in small creeks or rivers where you have to turn a lot.
i like the simplicity and control a paddle gives me plus i dont need to deal with rudders and mirage drives.
sometimes you just need a simple setup
How does it work in shallow water? The propeller underneath is going to hit the bottom.
I really like having a nice open deck in front of me instead of a bunch of clutter.
great points jason, that drive in the front sometimes is an issue, you can always add a bixpy to the rear and take the drive out :)
Si senor!!! Definitely worth it!!! My 2 cents, get a cheap kayak at first make sure you like fishing or kayaking before you go and spend that money for a pedal one. 👍 check out the edits on these videos tho!!!! 👍👍👍👍🍻🍻🍻
Yeah big investment, best thing to do is check my channel first lol
Kayak fishing with no pedal is usually a complete pain in the ass. So much time spent on getting to the spot and also getting a good positiion to fish.
100000000000000000000% agreed
I have a small anchor I can drop
I fish on a regular kayak
And I love it
It has its struggles at time
But it’s worth it
I get a full body workout as well I fish by the Queen Mary in Long Beach
I figure if you can shift gears like a bicycle you might really be able to get some speed with ease.
yeah thats a really goo idea and id be suprised if it didnt already exist
@@landrytucker1108 I haven’t been able to find one that’s geared. If you ever happen to see one can you post the link here?
@@SickndSoul quick google search doesnt reveal much. lets hurry and make a product and patent it
I had over 10 years in a paddle ocean yak br fish yaks. My 2nd yr in pedal yak. Trade offs. Paddle light bulky peddle bulky heavy now need trailer. On the water paddle easy goes almost everywhere pedal more restrictive . So after all that yes worth it thank you
redwood1957 100% agree. When you get stuck and have to paddle a pedal yak, it’s sucks because they are built to be pedaled optimally.
i plan my trips ahead and take the appropriate kayaks :) except that one time i got stuck paddling the slayer 13.... lol
Man...Aliex your videos are outstanding, thanks for taking the time, it really helped me better understand the kayak fishing world.
Ohh wow thanks Rob 😎 we are working hard on the next videos, really good one a bit funny. Thanks for the coffee ☕️
Want to guess if its pedal or paddle?
neither... it is motorized!! hey and just "good video" come onnn lol
Aliex Folgueira haha I was waiting for you to say something about the “Good” video 😆
I already have a motorized yak/solo skiff
I think the Solo needs a remote trolling motor then it’ll be a fishing beast but until then...
That might be the next one 👍
I’m waiting for that “Great” flipping video on the new Vibe.
#getoutthehousegofish
from Canada here and I am having a hard time understanding why they are so expensive ? so basically the same price I can get a boat with a trailer for around the same price is the plastic they use laced with gold ?
In Canada? Things are more expensive than here you gotta pay for all that extra “free” stuff
Very good points..I have a recreational paddle kayak and I'm currently researching pedal drive kayaks for fishing.
if you want spend the money they are better, for sure
Love does cayak they are great thank you for awesome video ✌️
the pedal drive allows you to fish faster cover more area in a shorter time, I have seen guys that make fast runs with them, not really my thing I like to chill but they c
Bro be honest with me if you choose on kayak that had to be good all around fresh water inshore and ocean and it was stable safe great for fishing had all the bells and whistles didn’t flip on you which one would u get
I think you are describing the Hobie Outback 2020, if you don't wanna spend $3000 then a old Town sportsman 120 pdl
I fish a lot of docks and bridge pylons so the reverse pedal drives are fantastic.
hands free and instant reverse it is a must to kayak fish docks for sure
Knees. If you have knee issues, you likely do not want a pedal drive. Or at least try one out for a full day and see how you make out. I know if I had one at this stage, I would need to sell it. No way my knees could handle much of that beyond very slow and casual use.
motors ftw :)
Yes, I want to see the comparison of motorized vs pedal.
Hi Alex. Yes. I think pedal kayaks are worth it if below $1500. But personally, I think companies who make pedal kayaks over $1500, I call it “price gauging”. That’s just my financial parameter that is.
a lot goes into it, years of research and development and warranty costs...not as clear as water, i should make a video on that
Aliex Folgueira Yes.
@Paul T yessss.. like Hobie PA @ $4599! Great example! LOL.
I'm selling the Hobie Sport and picking up a PDL 106 tomorrow.
ItsDLC I still waiting my pdl 132 shipping next week
This pdl 106 is a tank. I got 5.2 mph wide open. Easy to cruise a few mph. No complaints from me.
They are fun for sure, not double the cost of the same boat that’s non peddle drive though
Worth it in my book
Great video.I did not know what the pedals where for.Thank you.
Glad to help! lots of people get surprise when they see me on one
How is your shearwater holding up compared to other pedal drive kayaks? Been working in your neck of the woods and killing me now having my sea ghost 130 down here.
What brand is good where you can use pedal and put motor? Like can switch it anytime manual and motor?
Thanks I was on the fence with extra cost, but damn you sold me
@@James-gh3eu awesome
The best parts of the video 2:30 , 2:54 , and 8:05 . Also great drone shots Aliex! 👍
Hahah I wonder why?? Lol what do you think guys?
🤣😂🤣
When do you think the manufacturers are going to step up to pedal assist like the electric bikes use ( Bosch motor pedals)
I hope so! That would be epic!
@@AliexFolgueira
Yes, I agree with you on watching more videos, but none shows a kayak in choppy water.
I need this for my photography
It will definitely work for you
Can you pull up the pedal system when out on the water and switch to a paddle? River i go to has areas that getting extremely shallow where the propeller will drag on rocks
Nice video bro, i`m looking to buy one to fish in the sea, i was there are some that are long and slim and other are short and wide, which one work best for fishing? what are the differences between theese 2? thanks!
Hi Alex, any opinion on the most stable tandem fishing kayak for my 5 year old and I? I don't want this thing flipping over with a child on board.
feelfree lure 2 tandem with overdrive, i dont think you would have an issue with the hobie compass duo, it is super stable too and it has two drives more $$ thought
@@AliexFolgueira Thank you Alex! Gonna' need to save for a while, big purchase!
It's also a very good exercise for my legs blood circulation.
instant reverse too
@@AliexFolgueira now if they can put sprocket so I can easily triple up the speed that will be very helpful. Just in case I really need to speed up.
So I live in Minnesota and our lakes have lots of weeds.. do the pedal kayaks do well in weeds or will it just get stuck?
Grass is everywhere, I doubt that your lakes are full of it everywhere…props don’t like weeds
Finally purchased a peddle drive. I know I’m a year late to the peddle party lol. The new Bote Rackham aero+pd was my final choice. Thank you Aliex for another great vid
Awesome congratulations bro
You must watch the pro angler review, it is hilarious! Bro talks like it's being compared with a 25' bow rider. Look how it tips over when I stand up and lean over the edge!!! It's priceless!
some yaks are more stable than boats lol
Homie it's called a anchor!! I can paddle my yak and fish at same time 2 troll etc and you can also use a drift sock!!!
Yup very versatile
Ohmygosh! I’ve never seen anything like this. What’s the best kind to get if money is not an option?
Old Town has a good video how to install the fish finder I should make one lol
Which is better flap pedal or propeller pedal ?
i had to learn through you tube, i saw a fisherman going super fast hands free on the lake with it and I was like what is that ?
I would love to get one , but there is not much lakes to fish around here that haven't been overfished so a guy has to get creative and fish the rivers backwaters .
i say at least 15 inches
Alex, I am seriously considering the new vibe shearwater however the peddle drive is only forward movement. This is making me lean towards getting it with the bixby jet instead. Thoughts??
jeff the shearwater with bixpy will be a winning combo for sure, you can even use bixpy to go in reverse! cant wait to review them
Please come out with the differences between a motorized one!!! I’m between the two!!! I’m thinking pedal will be the one I go with!!!
Pedal is faster and more versatile, and you can always add a motor, now the autopilot 120 is hard to beat check my vids on it
I’m looking for an affordable kayak paddle drive system for fishing for me and my son what do you recommend pls help
Yes they are worth every penny love my Slayer Max Propel 12.5.
that's right
English: Hello Aliex
I'm JuanJo from Uruguay
Very good your video about the KyK pedal.
A query, the fins, can also go backwards?
In the 4.35 minute you mention going back, but I don't know if you mean elice's or both.
I'm starting to look at this type of KyK and seeing which one is better, it seems to me that the one with fins but the one with elice I see the advantage of going back.
What’s the best budget pedal kayak? Is reverse really a necessity for pedal drive?
best overal budget? i would say old town sportsman 120 pdl, if you call $2200 budget
Such a great and informative video! Thank you so much. Answered so many of my questions...and even ones I didn't even know I had lol.
Man I'd love a pedal for my photography and video shooting.
Shooting with a big lens and trying to use a paddle is a huge PITA.
Do you think a Kayak is good for people that have had back surgery? Keep up the great videos.
Alex, can you recommend a non-pedal fishing kayak for someone who wants to get into kayak fishing. I’m looking for a solid reliable paddle kayak and then if it grabs me I’ll have no issue upgrading down the line
Budget?
Aliex Folgueira I’m looking at a feel free lure 11.5 right now. It looks like a nice kayak to maybe get started. It’s $800. I don’t mind spending some money but the prices can ramp up quickly
Thanks Aliex💐
I have a question please: tips to avoid motor sport people in the open water like jet ski or speed boats!
You gotta test several pedaling positions, have you had back pains before ? Also spending lots of time on that seat will cause pain
I want a trolling motor to hell with all that work. hahaha.
Seems like a Craigslist trolling motor and small deep cycle battery are much cheaper than the $1000 premium they charge for a pedal kayak. I would gladly pedal if they were at all reasonable. When you can skip the pedaling, for 1/4 the price its a hard sell.
I just ordered one with a trolling motor I’m not peddling shit
@michaellowe3665 In my state they force you to buy a biyearly registration for any watercraft with a motor. That's right they charge a gasoline yacht the same fees they charge canoe with a trolling motor. It's an abusive law and that is a case where the pedal kayak would come in handy.
What would you say the best pedal kayak is for under $1600?
ummmm pelican catch 130 hdii or 110
So Alex... This reasoning excludes Vibe’s Shearwater because it doesn’t have a reverse? - you seam to had been Pro Vibe in past videos.
Also, I’m still confused about which drive system is better. Pedal/propeller vs Hobe style fin drives
This video is not about best pedal yak ,I can't name all in a video....you can easily add reverse to the shearwater, get the Hobie md 180
Long live the King, nice to meet your Sir.. I knew this face look similar like our crown Prince from some state located at Malaysia.
The thing to me is. no more gas or battery to worry about. that would be so cool. :-)
Link where to buy the pedal setup ?
What was the kayak that was green black and white with gray in this video
I was already sold. I get tired in my arms when I paddle and I want to relieve them. So I was mostly watching this to see if there was some strong argument against doing so haha!
That said, I like kayaking in really shallow waters. Today I was at a spot where I could reach the bottom with my feet while still sitting in the kayak. Are there any other propulsion systems better suited for those conditions?
Thanks for the great info Aliex!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Will do
To meeee, a kayak is a NO GO!!! A canoe.... Now that's my choice Paddle powered "Water Whip"
Very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you Tracey 😊
