    I've powered 3 fishing kayaks over the past 5 years. Two using trilling motors and the last powered with a 9.9 gas motor.
    I had to build custom mounts (all mounted at the stern) for the motors, and never used over 1/4" 6061 plate I never had any bending or distortion of any kind.

    I hope you include a total full power run until reaching safe voltage cutoff so you determine the usable time of the unit. As an experimental platform. the second one should have upgraded hardware to clean the kinks out a bit. Looks good so far. Good job.

    Good job.
    But I must tell you when it comes to propelling a kayak the KISS rule applies. The more electronics you introduce on the water the more problems you will have. Electronic speed controls and motor drives will fail , if not from stress when prop gets fouled with weed or shallow water , corrosion will destroy them.
    I learnt this the hard way doing what you have done. In the end I fitted an off the shelf 12Volt brushed motor, 50 lb thrust , steered the kayak with the oars , fitted marine grade circuit breaker in case of prop fouling. No more problems, easy to maintain. Keep it simple on the water. Do more fishing than cruising.
    I prefer to use Lead Acid Battery over Lion . When Lion battery reaches low voltage state it just shut off, Lead Acid Battery will keep prop turning on 12Volt motor even at 6 volts, will be good enough to get you home without paddling.

      He's using lipo's which are so unbelievably much better than lead acid that I can't believe you even mentioned Pb acid. As little as 2 years ago, 8000mah lipo's would've been probably $250 each but they're cheap now. And the best thing about lipo batteries, when they die you take a nail gun and shoot a nail through the battery, shorting all the cells together, stand back and watch the show!

    Hey Justin, you should lower the propeller "as deep as you can", it raises the water column (water pressure) above/behind the propeller, reducing the chance of cavitation around the impeller blades (power losses).

    That thing will be nuts with the higher voltage packs! Considering the amount of draw on that controller, you might want to make a heat exchanger out of an old heater core or something, so you can keep it submerged. That water bottle is going to get hot in a short while and burn up your nice 300 amp controller. I think you might want to invest in a better pump also. Those washer pumps are made for intermittent duty, so they won't last very long. If you can find one from an old water cooled computer setup, they're quiet and made to run continuously at 12v. I would say under engineered, over built. I don't have the skills to calculate stress loads so that issue is solved by not having to worry about it. Probably didn't see the video where I collected the material but it was $6 from a scrap yard and the final weight of the bracket itself is just over two lbs. Not bad for a backyard diy project.

    i just added a minn kota to my rig native water craft 13.5 ft long 41 inch wide , but yours is a very interesting project i might take in the future. like the speed . in the back for the cable tension and angle . an angle bracket with stainless steel pulleys or aluminum , make em or buy em. 3 inch long 1.5 inch at the middle apex of the triangle and it would give you the slide and relieve the tension on the material so it would not fray.

    Just a heads up if you plan on continuing with this without ELECTROFISHING. I would advise to protect against Ingress of any sharp sediment settling between the rotor and the stator which will strip the winding coating. This will cause a massive short which could potentially hurt you considering you plan to run a higher voltage. Please stay safe.

    it is a great setup. The kayak is a nice slim hull but it is made as a displacement hull. the reason it will put the bow up is because it will try to climb out of the hole in the water made by the kayak itself. A displacement hull will have nice lines to let the water flow around the hull with as little disturbance and waves as possible. Each hull has his own parameters and with them it is possible to calculate the specific max hull speed for that hull. Adding more power only will result in a higher pitched bow and higher wave making and bigger fuel/amp consumption. I am pretty sure that in case you would make a light planing hull and mount this motor that it will get up, start riding on top of the water (planing) and go much faster compared to the kayak. have a look at this:
    m.ua-cam.com/video/i65mI8jA96w/v-deo.html
    maybe you will understand the difference

    • @TheGoodoftheLand
      @TheGoodoftheLand  3 роки тому +3

      Yup, that is correct. With the exception of this kayak being a displacement hull. The top speed in this video is 8.5 mph. In the video dropping today the kayak hits 11.5 mph. The calculated top speed of my kayak as a displacement hull is 4mph. The displacement hull calculation is a rough estimate based on actual rounded true displacement hulls. Most fishing kayaks have have a flat bottom in the center for stability and some elevated chines for tracking. My particular hull is perfect for getting on top of the water with the exception if the rear of the boat where the boat tapers to a point. The water is not supporting the rear as it climes out of its own bow wake. This causes the front to pitch up. Not near as much as you would think but it is a problem. As you will see in the next video I overcame this with a small hydrofoil just above the prop and the boat hit plane at 11.5 mph.its able do do this because it is a hybrid hull. The test was cut short due to a manufacturer defect so we only have one run on this setup but it was enough to move forward and design a true efficient hydrofoil. The cool thing is we are running at about 1/3 of the rated power capability of the electrical system. It's going to be interesting to see what happens at full power with less resistance from the water. My goal was 10mph. At this point I'm excited to see the top speed. The boat is incredibly stable and controlled at speed and can handle alot more power.
      Hope this helps. Thanks for watching, much more to come!

      Its aluminum. The entire thing weighs five lbs. The battery is less than 10. This kayak can carry 450 lbs. The material used is certainly overkill but it plus several other pieces were picked up at the local scrap yard for $6. Can't beat that price for a prototype. I'm with you in thinking the ones made available for purchase could be 2/3 thinner.
