After everything going on in the world right now the smile on your face was absolutely worth watching this video
Wow! Great conversion!! All the benefits of electric power and a fun way to get to more fishing spots. Great job👍👍👍
Absolutely amazing. The world of kayaking is definitely changing. Thanks for sharing it.
Ç😊😊😊
Absolutely amazing, quality work you did there. Nicely done
Amazingly cool build, I’m so envious!!
Also the feeling of zooming in a kayak after the hard work is one of the best I definitely understand why you couldn’t stop smiling feels like you got two giant outboards on there
What a crazy idea man! It might look ridiculous but is actually genius. Kayaks with a motor takes them to another level
I've powered 3 fishing kayaks over the past 5 years. Two using trilling motors and the last powered with a 9.9 gas motor.
I had to build custom mounts (all mounted at the stern) for the motors, and never used over 1/4" 6061 plate I never had any bending or distortion of any kind.
Such a cool build. I was in the seat when you opened her up and the first thing in my mind was wondering about the steering being fluid enough to turn without turning over.
Not an engineer or tech guy but LOVE ALL use of Electric! It will get you there!!
that smile bro, i was the same when i built v1, now I'm building a v2 with more power bigger prop and customising the whole rear end of the kayak to look like nothing on this world haha but the stability has gone thru the roof, i will be able to stand whilst in motion. good job on the build by the way
I hope you include a total full power run until reaching safe voltage cutoff so you determine the usable time of the unit. As an experimental platform. the second one should have upgraded hardware to clean the kinks out a bit. Looks good so far. Good job.
I'm raising money to fire him into the sun on the first Ugandan space flight
I love it! I love messing around with motors and electricity. I really love how you now get the Tesla effect in your kayak. lol You can't punch that motor without smiling!
I love watching people making stuff just for the smile factor. Well done!
That looks like the hell of a lot of fun.
"This is as fast as Im ever guna drive....." Yeah RIGHT! 😂😅🤣🤣
Good job.
But I must tell you when it comes to propelling a kayak the KISS rule applies. The more electronics you introduce on the water the more problems you will have. Electronic speed controls and motor drives will fail , if not from stress when prop gets fouled with weed or shallow water , corrosion will destroy them.
I learnt this the hard way doing what you have done. In the end I fitted an off the shelf 12Volt brushed motor, 50 lb thrust , steered the kayak with the oars , fitted marine grade circuit breaker in case of prop fouling. No more problems, easy to maintain. Keep it simple on the water. Do more fishing than cruising.
I prefer to use Lead Acid Battery over Lion . When Lion battery reaches low voltage state it just shut off, Lead Acid Battery will keep prop turning on 12Volt motor even at 6 volts, will be good enough to get you home without paddling.
He's using lipo's which are so unbelievably much better than lead acid that I can't believe you even mentioned Pb acid. As little as 2 years ago, 8000mah lipo's would've been probably $250 each but they're cheap now. And the best thing about lipo batteries, when they die you take a nail gun and shoot a nail through the battery, shorting all the cells together, stand back and watch the show!

Love your work brother, you have inspired me to do something similar to my kayak.
I’m looking to run approximately 90 volts with a huge 720 phase amps controller.
Looking to have a lot fun with it but mostly using it for slower speed trolling and fishing.
I current setup is only 5 horsepower which is quite primitive in design but still a lot of fun.

Not bad. I dont know how much cooling you need but when I did model boats we installed a water pickup angled off the drive prop to cool the engine and had the exit off the side of the hull so you could see it running. It may be an option for your project.
This would be great!!! If he didn't do this he needs a radiator and fan in the loop on his water cooled ECU!
It may could clog up the fins if there are any in the ECU cooling block. CPU coolers have fins. Idk if that does. If it does use a corrosion inhibitor and a radiator and fan. Your build will last and not have over heating issues. Good luck
PC cooling hard Ware is your friend. I would use a 240mm radiator. You could get away with a thick 120mm rad with high fin density.
Nice work dude I have seen a few other electric motors out there and Ive always been curious on how much more speed you could add onto them.

Hey Justin, you should lower the propeller "as deep as you can", it raises the water column (water pressure) above/behind the propeller, reducing the chance of cavitation around the impeller blades (power losses).
Great project!
Regards from Brazil!
What? Ventilation is not cavitation. A simple "fence" would stop the intrusion of air into the propeller. Fact, you raise an engine to get more speed. Sorry my friend.

Awesome work buddy!! I do high speed rc cars. (120-150mph) the sss motor in your video works great. If you want more power run two of them this will allow you to use even larger props by splitting the load. Not sure how you could mechanically mount two on there but all of the high speed rc boats run twin motors on twin seaking escs. You would literally almost your mph
Hell yea 30mph would be my goal atleast 🤣

Very cool project! Love the rudder. It's very clever.
dude, your machining is clean af.
nicely done
That thing will be nuts with the higher voltage packs! Considering the amount of draw on that controller, you might want to make a heat exchanger out of an old heater core or something, so you can keep it submerged. That water bottle is going to get hot in a short while and burn up your nice 300 amp controller. I think you might want to invest in a better pump also. Those washer pumps are made for intermittent duty, so they won't last very long. If you can find one from an old water cooled computer setup, they're quiet and made to run continuously at 12v. Can't wait to see more on this!😁
A D5 pump
Well done mate-great build.
Sweet ride! I would love to know the current draw at various speed settings. Good luck with your further development.
+William Fraser That info is on the way!

Don't need machine tools. You would be suprized what you can build with a hacksaw, grinder, drill, and file.
that's all I needed for my kayak build and I'm only using the same for my v2
The thickness of your material is big enough for a full size outboard. Awesome work
Simplemente perfecto. Este soporte motor está muy buen fabricado. Enhorabuena!
If you were using a planing hull instead of a displacement hull (like all kayaks) you could double your speed and reduce power requirements.
I think fundamentally changing the design of the boat kinda defeats the entire purpose...
Yea a solo skiff hull is what you need to plane out
Great video! Most impressed by your level of knowledge, intelligence. A vitamin bottle! Go work for nasa. Great job!
Perfect work! Good luck and all the best!
This was a good video buddy. I been wanting to put a motor on mine.

"Lets see if my 1 occupant lighter kayak with an electric motor can beat your aluminum flat bottom with 3 occupants and a 5hp motor!"
Hm, im 26 seconds in and im anxious with anticipation of who is going to win this race!
That's a lot of aluminum. I bet that mount could hold a cummins lol 💪
Yeah, I thought Chevy 350.
Def could be lightened up a ton. Lots of lightning holes would help a lot.
Grossly over engineered compared to the strength of the Hull material that is soo over the top, just my opinion
I would say under engineered, over built. I don't have the skills to calculate stress loads so that issue is solved by not having to worry about it. Probably didn't see the video where I collected the material but it was $6 from a scrap yard and the final weight of the bracket itself is just over two lbs. Not bad for a backyard diy project.
@@TheGoodoftheLand no problem with building something stronger then it needs to be I was being honest when I said I bet it could hold a cummins with it being that strong a couple some supports to it and it could hold what ever power you put on it as long as it doesn't tear up your kayak
Nice job Jason. I never saw a kayak making a wake! I guess the next thing will be to see if you can waterski off the back!
i just added a minn kota to my rig native water craft 13.5 ft long 41 inch wide , but yours is a very interesting project i might take in the future. like the speed . in the back for the cable tension and angle . an angle bracket with stainless steel pulleys or aluminum , make em or buy em. 3 inch long 1.5 inch at the middle apex of the triangle and it would give you the slide and relieve the tension on the material so it would not fray.
I can see Hydrofoils in the future :D
+Sparky Projects Sparky ,you are a wizard! After this video I added one.
When you get this all sorts out I would be very interested in purchasing your plans/kits/systems for my yak! I have far more trust in your method than the mass production manufactured cheap crap being offered these days.
Looks like Chesapeake bay from my holidays in 1989. Great work, nice build. Battery/more weight in the front helps with aquaplaning for my rigid boat. Efficiency curve always crashes at a certain point, about 20 mph in the case of an ebike.
Having too much fun again!
Cheers, Gary
Just a heads up if you plan on continuing with this without ELECTROFISHING. I would advise to protect against Ingress of any sharp sediment settling between the rotor and the stator which will strip the winding coating. This will cause a massive short which could potentially hurt you considering you plan to run a higher voltage. Please stay safe.
Do you know where I can purchase one of those?
Lol ELECTROFISHING... could it be dangerous?

it is a great setup. The kayak is a nice slim hull but it is made as a displacement hull. the reason it will put the bow up is because it will try to climb out of the hole in the water made by the kayak itself. A displacement hull will have nice lines to let the water flow around the hull with as little disturbance and waves as possible. Each hull has his own parameters and with them it is possible to calculate the specific max hull speed for that hull. Adding more power only will result in a higher pitched bow and higher wave making and bigger fuel/amp consumption. I am pretty sure that in case you would make a light planing hull and mount this motor that it will get up, start riding on top of the water (planing) and go much faster compared to the kayak. have a look at this:
m.ua-cam.com/video/i65mI8jA96w/v-deo.html
maybe you will understand the difference
Yup, that is correct. With the exception of this kayak being a displacement hull. The top speed in this video is 8.5 mph. In the video dropping today the kayak hits 11.5 mph. The calculated top speed of my kayak as a displacement hull is 4mph. The displacement hull calculation is a rough estimate based on actual rounded true displacement hulls. Most fishing kayaks have have a flat bottom in the center for stability and some elevated chines for tracking. My particular hull is perfect for getting on top of the water with the exception if the rear of the boat where the boat tapers to a point. The water is not supporting the rear as it climes out of its own bow wake. This causes the front to pitch up. Not near as much as you would think but it is a problem. As you will see in the next video I overcame this with a small hydrofoil just above the prop and the boat hit plane at 11.5 mph.its able do do this because it is a hybrid hull. The test was cut short due to a manufacturer defect so we only have one run on this setup but it was enough to move forward and design a true efficient hydrofoil. The cool thing is we are running at about 1/3 of the rated power capability of the electrical system. It's going to be interesting to see what happens at full power with less resistance from the water. My goal was 10mph. At this point I'm excited to see the top speed. The boat is incredibly stable and controlled at speed and can handle alot more power.
Hope this helps. Thanks for watching, much more to come!
A Perception Triumph 13 Kayak would work great with a motor. They cut through waves like butter.
Is the thickness of plate wayyyy over kill?

Surprised it didn't sink by the stern. Overkill taken to Nth degree, next one you should cut the thickness by at least half! You not putting a V8 outdrive on your kayak.
Its aluminum. The entire thing weighs five lbs. The battery is less than 10. This kayak can carry 450 lbs. The material used is certainly overkill but it plus several other pieces were picked up at the local scrap yard for $6. Can't beat that price for a prototype. I'm with you in thinking the ones made available for purchase could be 2/3 thinner.
