For those of us who prefer minimalism. 1 rod, 1 little tackle box with 2 or 3 lures, no trailers no cables no batteries no DIY, just toss my kayak inside the van and be in the water in 5 minutes. Paddle and pedal will always be the choice 😎
@@AliexFolgueira yeah but I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of the minimalism for the extra range and hands free fishing that the pedal allows you to have. With a motor comes a lot of extra weight, battery, cables, installation, etc. Then again, fishing down here is very different than what you do up there. I fish mostly drifting with the current in big rivers so once I reach my fishing spot I don't need to paddle/pedal anymore until I finish the stretch and go up to the next. A lot of times the currents and wind will toss you against rocks, stumps trees with lots of branches or under very thick vegetation and believe me when that happens you'd wish you had as little stuff on your kayak as possible. But I imagine that up there fishing in lakes or in open inshore waters I'd really appreciate the mobility and extra range that a motor would provide so it's really a situational thing
That's the good thing of the industry evolving to where it is , is that theres a kayak for everyone. Whether it's a 4,000 loaded out kayak or a 1,000 kayak , theres not a wrong way as one has their reasons for their desired way. Tightlines.
About your UA-cam name being Less Talk More Fishing? I have a better one that goes like No Paddle More Fishing,,, That`s what you get with a hands free set up
Lol..I did purchase my kayak. It's a 120 PDL. However, I picked the hybird edition with the pedal drive. Only because they make a 46lb thrust trolling motor, that fits exactly where my PDL sits. The trolling motor weighs 19 lbs. But now my bixpy J2 rudder mount motor, is on it's way. I don't like not having PDL drive with me, incase something happens with the motor. So I say a small motor like the bixpy, and you always have the PDL. That's a great setup for me. Be safe..🤟🙏🎣
I have an insane motor setup, and invested about 2500 into the setup, and this year I'm buying pedal. Less hassle, less weight, unlimited power, no registration, drop and go, exercise. Might as well just get a boat if you go motorized. Thats what I do
When I was in the Coast Guard I met an Old Salty guy in a little 14' open wood fishing boat. He had oars and 15 HP two stroke outboard to propel his boat. I ask him about his boat and he said; "I first fell in love with boats and fishing when I was a young teenager. I saved up and bought a rowboat. I fished every weekend and some days after school. When I seen my first outboard motor I had to have one. But my row boat couldn't be powered easily. So I saved up and bought a small power boat and got an outboard. I spent nearly as much time working on that motor as I did running it. Soon I grew tired of working on that old outboard and got a bigger and better outboard motor and a bigger boat. I soon noticed that I was fishing less and my boat was sitting in the yard more. Then I got a family and they wanted to be able to go out with me fishing. so I got a bigger boat and a bigger motor. This boat sat in the back yard all but three or four time a year and I would walk down to water and remember going fishing and how great it was. So when I retired, I sold the big boat and bought a small boat that I could row. I'm old and can't row as well as I used to, so I must have a small outboard to get home. But I fish almost every weekend and some weekdays too. I never want to upgrade my boat ever again. I like boating and fishing too much to upgrade again." ...True story.
Pedal kayak will not die. I have had electric trolling motor driven kayaks for many years, now I just bought a pedal kayak, and I'll use it a lot more , the reason been: 1. Pedal kayak does not need registration, it's not about a few bucks registration fee, it's about convenient. In my state most water body requires all motor boats been lunched at the dedicated ramp area with inspection, sit in long line waiting for inspection is really pain in the summer busy days. Pedal kayak basically can hand lunch anywhere, this is especially useful when you camp at water front camp site. 2. More and more water bodies especially those for providing drink waters for near by city no longer allow motor kayak, it is not because the motor is more powerful as you mentioned in the video, it's about contamination, imagine the kayak capsized, the battery (may be lead based or lithium based) can cause pollution of the water. 3. I usually fish on a lake almost all day, been in a small kayak just sitting there is not good for my body, it's even worse than I sit in my office. I need exercise. Pedaling kayak is perfect way to achieve both fishing and exercising. There are more reasons that I will use pedal more than use motor, these are 3 most important reason. Thanks! Really like your video.
As long as there are states that require all motors to be registered with the DMV (but not manual drive like pedal kayaks) Pedal kayaks will always have a place.
agreed same here. I may add an motor set up but it would be insane to just rely on the electric motor, i dont trust it for long distance. If something goes wrong you have no way to propel your kayak.
If states did not require you to title and register your kayak just for adding a small electric motor, I think you would see a lot more kayaks with motors
Yeah I just moved back to Ga after living in WA St and didn't need to register it there but In Ga you have to with a motor! Crazy it's not a gas powered engine or anything it doesn't get over 5mph so I don't understand why other than to get more money out of your pocket!!!!
I have a Bixpy on my Sea Eagle 393RL, I put it on speed 6/7 and paddle with it. No one knows I have a motor! It's none of the state's business as far as I'm concerned. These laws are antiquated, nonsensical and greedy, this is essentially an e-kayak like an e-bike... They just don't want people putting 6HP outboards on canoes for free. I do have this motor mounted in the skeg slot which is where the stealth comes in, you can't really get away with it in any other mounting config...
Adding even the smallest motor of any kind requires you to register with the DMV and put numbers and registration on the kayak. If you do not have the receipt from buying it new, or a prior registration, you will not be allowed to register it and will be fined by every cop who sees you. If you pedal it, you don't need any of that.
I live in CA bought my kayak used 5 years prior to me putting a trolling motor on it. No recipe, and I thought it was gonna be a nightmare registering it. It wasn't, less than 20 minutes in dmv, and registration was under 20 bucks.
I have a Hobie Outback and love it, but being in my 70’s, my fishing range is limited. I just installed a Bixpy drive on the back and opened up new horizons. Max speed is 4.5 mph. To extend range I run at setting 5 out of 10, and get 2.9 mph. If I add a little easy peddling I go 4.0 mph. The drive is half the depth of the fins. Actually less depth than the rudder.
Kayak Angler reports 2021 Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 12 is the second most sold fishing kayaks. Motors are a pain in the arsh! service your pedal drive and you'll never have problems.
@@LouisianaBlackwaterFlyFishing If I'm not in a hurry, it takes me about 2 minutes to put my battery in my yak and maybe ten seconds to hook up the battery. I spend more time loading my gear. The amount of time I save in the water is immeasurable. It also opens up water to me that I would never dream of fishing with a paddle or peddle-powered Kayak. Best under $200 investment you could possibly make for a kayak.
Im sure a motor would be nice but Im ok with my pedal driven Native Slayer 10 that I got brand new for $1000. Also dont have to worry about charging any batteries or dealing with registering my yak for a motor.
I think having pedals and a motor is perfect as motor can get you to the spot and then the peddles help to fish around your spot….just watch Greg Blanchard as he’s the king of kayak tournaments on UA-cam
I don’t fish, but I kayak in the pacific for recreation. I like having redundant systems as a lot can happen out there. 3 forms of propulsion are better then two, which is better than one
Love you “Hate” video as Hate leads to darks side of the force through passion. Peace is a lie. There is only Passion. Through Passion I gain Strength. Through Strength I gain Power. Through Power I gain Victory. Through Victory my chains are Broken. …. Lol
I think more kayaks going be like the shearwater removable drives with plugs go inside. Up to the person, because you have people like me that push there kayak batteries and drain them because they forget to charge it😂. It’s a b**** just paddle with kayak with fishing gear, batteries, graphs, trolling motor, other gear for long distance.

I was putting trolling motors on kayaks before they had pedals,,if there was pedal kayaks before 2003 I did know about it,,I can build my own trolling motor and motor mount for less than 300oo compared to 1000oo+ ,and it is a professional looking setup with cable steering, tilting motor, a kayak motor system is the way to go,,as far as I know I have the best setup their is for the money i have spent,,thanks for the video Alex
Next video I wanna cover some of the history of kayaks you know the evolution, if you don’t mind sending me a hit of yours via email afishingtv@gmail.com
I'm trying to figure out what motor to put on a Jackson Big Tuna. Was hoping there's something convenient with a brushless motor that don't use a lot of power but can move the kayak good. Anything with integrated battery packs that last or you'd easily recommend? Feel like a boat battery would sure weigh the whole yak down and be a risk to lose if the boat flipped. I'm not sure how many AH A person needs. How many miles can these lithium combos go? Is a wide kayak like a Jackson Big Tuna going to be too much to get a lot of range?
My thoughts as you know aliex, it's to each their own.. But if you want to reach bigger water and get to a spot faster you'll go to motor. I see pdl as a recreational kayak vs fishing. I know many like the exercise and I've thought about pdl... but then on the lake like hearsay 10mph wind, with white caps, and boats causing so much wake it was not fun.. Can't imagine doing that in a pdl. My kayak 106mk did fine.
I have found there are different types of kayakers (paddlers, peddlers, motorized) and many of those will not try nor want to try the other options. I think a lot of it depends on how and where they use their kayaks. So I don’t think any of those categories will ever die completely. One may be more popular at certain times (partly driven by the industry and once again uses). I will say for me if I were to motorize one it would still have the pedal drive. Motors break down, batteries die and I would hate to be stuck trying to only paddle larger fishing rigs back to the takeout. Plus I just like the functionality of the peddle drive overall and the control I get from being the motor. Haha I say do what works for you and your needs. Good video.
I agree. I bought a Grumman 17 ft canoe for $2,000 and use a 6 hp Thai longtail that cost me $584 in 2014. I never understood the point of a pedal kayak. For the money some people are putting into these pedal-yaks, then you just buy a used jest ski fir fishing.
For me, the entire idea of a kayak is the minamalist, lightweight, small, close to nature aspects. As well as the exercise. The last thing I want to do is have a bunch of gadgets motors and batteries adding weight and complexity to it. If I want all that, I'd just buy a john boat.
We just got our pedal kayaks in August and only used them for 2 months before winter. Everything is ice right now, and all I want to do is take my kayak out! It doesn't make a very good snow sled, though. 🤪
Pedal kayaks have some specific benefits: 1) exercise 2) you can use pedal drives in bodies of water where motors aren’t allowed 3) you can use pedal drives in tournaments where motors aren’t allowed 4) pedal drives have fewer moving parts to break 5) pedal drives don’t require hardly any maintenance 6) much easier to pull up a pedal drive than trim an engine in shallows, flats, oysters, etc. 7) pedal drives are stealthier 8) cost; your points didn’t make much sense to me because you’re talking about pedal + motor cost vs paddle + motor cost. 9) as you know, Hobie drives come completely out & there’s a cassette that goes in there. No hole. The bike style drives are much bigger, bulkier and in the way. 10) much lighter weight & easier transport/setup with a pedal drive vs motor
1- you can still paddle a motorized kayak and get a more complete exercise 2- two is true but I haven’t encountered a spot yet that don’t let me use motors 3- the tournaments that don’t allow motors are few and will be fewer soon 4- pedal drives break just like a trolling motor, the idea of zero maintenance is not really true. I have trolling motors I never serviced yet plenty of drives I had to fix or serviced or replace 5. /see 4 6- you know that there are so many motors setups for example the autopilot 120 is way easier to pull up than any any drive there is! So is the Bixpy in the shearwater..again not a valid point. I’ll cover 7-10 in the next comment
8 cost why would you pay $1000 more if in the end you gonna put an ipilot unit on it ? I think you should rewatch it get the 120 paddle only add i-Pilot instead of getting 120 pdl and add i-Pilot and never use the drive 9. Cassette does nothing really and who takes that fishing anyways no one, in the other hand a paddle kayak only won’t have that hole
@UCIrw3uW8CpJZ3m1WODz2gFw 1300 but why pay $1000 for something you won’t use ? Again there so many motors at different budgets and capabilities you get what works for you I think you shred the auto pilots
After paddling for years I went to go purchase a pedal kayak. When the person told me the price difference between the pedal and the motor and the motor was cheaper I went for that! I have come to love my motorized kayak I find it still easy to launch And gives me more access on the water.. Mine is transom mounted so I have the entire cockpit open! 🐟🎣👍🏼
Yeah so true. I have a side mounted motor on mine and it’s refreshing to have the energy left at the end of the day to clean up and cook your catch. 🤜🤛😎🍻 Cheers
I mostly troll with my Outback, and slapped a Bixpy on it to extend range. I’ll usually go to pedals to troll, pop on the motor when i get a hit so i can reel in one fish while the gear on my second rod continues to fish. Absolutely love it. But man,….that iPilot,…that is the future.
they'll never be dead. You fish a 2 or 3 day tourney 8+ hours a day on a river system or a grass lake, you use the motor to make your big runs and you pedal to stay positioned in the current or a paddle to go over thick grass. If you use your motor for everything for 8 hours, you gonna run the battery down. If you're camping or staying out the car, you have no way to charge the battery for day 2. You are forgetting something else....a lithium battery big enough to last full tourney day in the wind or current is $500 at least. Also as of right now, the best, most competitive kayak tournament series doesnt even allow motors during the tournament, only during practice. That tourney series has the most and best anglers, pro anglers, etc. because it is run very well; but word on the street is they are going to start allowing motors. A person with a motor has a huge advantage over someone that doesn't either cuz they cant afford it or whatever. Person with motor can make much longer runs without being tired when they get there. They can sit back and drink coffee while running to their area, while a pedaler or paddler runs a mile or two, they get there already worn out, sweaty, etc. And lastly, as for tournament anglers on kayaks-- a lot of us, myself included, will never switch from a pro angler 14. NO other kayak has enough horizontal rod storage where you can fit 12 rods in hull, beside you by doubling up the 6 rod holders. You can still get them in and out while on the water, you dont gotta pull open a nose and fight with them all inside the boat. When a tournament calls for potentially having that many rods, and you have to get in skinny water and up under trees and shit, you want the horizontal rod storage, you dont want to be fighting those rods up and down all day. That and the comfort and space for tackle, and stability on big water. A topwater 120 or a bonafide is super, super stable, but it doesnt have a deeper hull and bigger side walls like the hobie. The hobie Im fine with going out on champlain or a big lake with a lotta waves and some wind. I love my topwater, but it will not handle the waves and wind like the hobie, waves come crashing over the sides, I feel much more unsafe and like I'm going to flip.,
I would just get the Bonafide pwr 129 and add motors, see my videos in the channel about it, unless you just want a drive and will not motorized it, i would just save the money, unless i fish a lot of big water, like open ocean fishing and stuff where i may want to have the drive as a back up
@@AliexFolgueira thank you for replying. So I have watched pretty much all your videos man. I think you’re hilarious and very genuine and I appreciate that! My whole thing is this. I want a paddle kayak for bass fishing rivers. I want the drive so I have instant reverse and forward. I want bonafide cause I can leave drive off and it has better paddling and a smaller drive hole for less water to get in (any way to seal this?). I like the idea of motors but think for the most part I just want to have a versatile kayak that has the drive, works well without, as well as has capabilities if I ever do want a motor. I think a motor for me is a bit much. Really I’m debating between just a paddle or a pedal cause the motor set up is just bit much for me at the moment. Do you think the p127 is a killer kayak? I just wanna rip lips

Good exercise.. Inshore marsh fishing in a foot of water or less is not motor friendly. I like my hobie outback for that. I can get 4 mph with it on calm day and I am 65!! Do have a Texas Power Paddle Marlin (motor in rudder) to help get me back after long paddle in Texas heat.
I have a kayak that has been discontinued and I think it's because it's slow to paddle but it's also one of the most stable kayaks ever made. It's called the Freedom Hawk Pathfinder and I would love you to try to flip one, it has pontoons that you connect that makes it great for a outboard. It's as stable as a floating dock. Please make a video flipping one.
You know of any sites that make a Kit for a trolling motor for the old school vanilla Predator MX i love the open floor design, super stable, just need to add a spot lock but i need a mounting plate.
Hey Aliex, for me have a pedal for my kayak is a dream, maybe if you have any used pedal that dont fit you anymore, I would like to put it on my hand made low cost but gold fishing kayac.
Can’t wait to see your “why motor kayaks are dead: Jon Boats” video inna couple years LOL I prefer my paddle boat. Otherwise it doesn’t feel like a kayak to me and then what’s the point of this niche?
I think the point of the niche is just being able to launch nearly anywhere, and go places a big boat can't go. What power you use to get to those places is irrelevant to me.
Pedal kayak is not so safe in choppy and windy conditions. With pedal kayak, the seat is higher and in choppy condition it is easy to roll. The paddle is not only for paddling but also to prevent you from rolling. There have been many accidents with pedal kayaks rolling over because of sudden change of wind or current, some deadly. Just be aware of the pros and cons of pedal kayaks before you go out there and buy one.
I have a Hobie PA 14 and got caught in a storm on a lake that rolled in when I was fishing it handled the swells and white caps no problem wasn’t worried a bit that PA was plowing thru those white caps and swells like a big old battleship lol
It doesn't mean they are dead it means pedal kayaks are going to become a less hot item and the supply will only increase and the price will drop until people who maybe don't have 2k to drop on one can afford it
Why buy a motorized kayak when you can buy a boat? You have to register, taxes, insurance, for one person? Get a boat. Add in every year paying for the crap. And the crap you need for the motor. All the weight. Get a job boat for 400 and slap a motor on it. Take the motor off and use the ores.
Because a bigger boat: you need a trailer, you need insurance, you can just simply launch it anywhere etc, you can have an autopilot 120 and launch it anywhere and paddle it like a kayak if you want because it is a kayak. Register is cheap and easy, don’t worry soon even the regular paddle yak will have to be register lol
I agree with everything you said all they way up until you got mad about motors in turnys. I would be mad about this one. I wouldn’t want everyone utilizing a motor for a turny. Not everyone can afford a motor or drive set up. I don’t think they loose money, I think they retain money by not allowing. Poor guy who just wants a shot.
You can have a nice motorized kayak for $250 extra poor guy can even the odds now! He can have manual 360 for $260 and fight the $10,000 hobie 360 setup
I got an xi3 with spot lock with a remote that I plan on linking to my Lowrance hds. My whole setup is still a couple thousand less than a pro angler 360.
Yeah, that sums it up for me as well. My Hobie gives me the option to pull out the mirage drive and drop a motor down in there and someday I will when the budget allows, but I absolutely love the pedal drive. Pedal will be my goto when out with the family or girlfriend and we are just touring a lake, spot fishing, taking our time. But the mornings when I'm by myself and want to pick up the morning bite at my favorite waypoints, get me there faster :-)
Good points here Aliex! I'd add that modularity on being able to switch from pedalmotorized depending on the trip would be a case for some folks. Some places (especially out here in the west) have begun to restrict motorized depending on the season, water level, etc.
THE ELECTRIC KAYACK IF THE BATTERY DEPLETES YOU HAVE TO CARRY THE HUGE LOAD OF THAT USELESS BATTERY INTO THE KAYACK. I PREFFER THE FOOT PEDAL, THEY ARE LIGHTER AND THEY CAN GO FAR AWAY.
@@AliexFolgueira An I can go 100 miles on my foot setup. Anothet con of battery kayack is that you cannot carry it from a pond to another pond because weight about a ton.
@@AliexFolgueira AND WHAT ABOUT A BATTERY KATCHING FIRE? THESE LITHIUM BATTERIES CATCH A FIRE THAT CANNOT BE EXTENGUISHED WITH WATER. JUST IMAGINE TO BE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE WITH THE BOAT BURNED, OR WORST THAT THE BOAT CATCH FIRE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WATER!
Motorizing kayaks is cheaper. If you can work with your hands you can modify almost any kayak to take at least a trolling motor. From what I've noticed watching so many videos of people modding their yaks spend a minimum of somewhere around $150 to $200 additional to the price of their yaks maybe even less if they already have a trolling motor and some recycled building materials. Hell look at that pelican catch power you reviewed... $200 Walmart trip has that thing up and running and it's still way cheaper than the high end Hobies
While I agree with your premise…unfortunately… electric motors BREAK DOWN!!! and having the pedal drive … gets you back to the launch ramp… been there!!! paddling this bigger … heavier… kayaks is prehistoric…I like the confidence of have THREE methods of powering my kayaks… MOTORS R O C K!!!
I agree that using a kayak with a motor is a huge advantage however like it was mentioned the downsides are like anything else with a motor and thats when it brakes it cost more. Not to mention if you have a battery problem or motor issue when you take it out far you are looking at a long petal back. Have to figure worse case scenario for petal drive is that you can only at worse brake your propeller where with a motor you can face many problems.
Pedal drive kayaks ARE NOT DEAD, just because of a simple fact....price! Not everyone want to spend outrageous prices for motorized kayaks!.As soon as you have a motor on a kayak it now becomes a boat!,and depending on what state you live in, now you have to register it as a boat
I agree with you Aliex. Makes more sense and economical to upgrade a paddle kayak. Maybe for people that don’t fish they may still like the pedal kayaks, but for avid anglers you need precise trolling motors.
I disagree. Cost is the main thing at least rigging one like he wants too. Then you have weight and inability to go places a normal kayak can go (small rivers/creeks). They both have their niche markets in the fishing world
Ok…it will be funny seeing the “avid angler” with a dead battery on the shoreline as the “non avid” angler passes him by with his measly little paddle yak and continues to catch fish
Ok I like the rant at the end…I am just starting to research pedal drive kayaks but also want to be able to take my 2.5 year old on with me. I have a spinal injury which affects both my arms but mostly my left arm so I can’t paddle a kayak. I just recently saw that pedal drive kayaks were a thing. Can you make a recommendation for a beginner who just wants to get out on the water…I don’t think I’ll be doing much fishing. Maybe one pedal rive recommendation and one with combo with an electric motor? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I’m in Canada so hopefully bi have the same options available in the USA.
Ohh boy USA made kayaks are super expensive in Canada, pedal drive kayaks that can take a kid, I say gotta be stable and have a lot of space in the tankwell for a seat. Old town 120 pdl is nice
@@AliexFolgueira appreciate your time. Do you think a regular kayak with an electric motor would be better or pedal drive would always be good as a backup if the battery runs out?
@@kore996 it depends on budget I got an old town autopilot kayak with 100ah lithium battery and I cam go max speed for 3 hours or 12 miles before I drain the battery, you can always take a backup battery with you in a bag, say a small 60ah hour and have enough juice for 20 miles, if you know your battery range, fully charge it and plan your trip you should not run out of juice, but anyways always have a backup plan because motors and drives can and will break
I have to agree with you generally with this video! I never thought I'd say it, but I just started rigging my 2018 ATAK 120 to take my NK300 hp motor. I'm moving it from the Slayer Propel 13. I bought the ATAK 120 used a few years back as a backup paddle only kayak and only used it once. I loved the layout and comfortable seat, but realized that I wasn't going to paddle the distances that I cover in my pedal drive Slayer. I was unwilling to depend strictly on the NK300 and always had my propel drive as backup. Now I have the NK300 and the paddle becomes my backup once I rig up the ATAK. I hope to have it rigged soon and expect to check out how the NK300 pushes this kayak. I am really looking forward to the simplicity of my setup when I go to foot steering and have more room for all my stuff. I'll report on one of your videos the results of my speed test.
Oh the old and almost dead thinking they know anything about the younger generation I'm a roof tiler have been since 17 I guarantee I work harder then you ever have you old fuck only thing you know about is metamucil so stick your lane old man
I went from a regular kayak to a Hobie outback to a PA 14’ to a Skanu with tiller. For me, at this point, the Skanu beats all. The Skanu is significantly cheaper than a new PA and will get you to your destination much faster, not to mention that it will also get you back to land much quicker when the weather turns, which happens pretty regularly here in FL.
I can understand if you never leave your state to fish or visit one other state, but I regularly fish 3 states and rather than registering it in every state I'll use the xi3 at home and use the pedal drive for out of state traveling. Yearly non resident fishing licenses can add up pretty quick, then adding multiple boat registration fees for a kayak on top of it? I'll pass, saves me more money for gas and other fishing crap... In about 6 years when I'm 100% vested with my union's pension I plan on quitting and doing a cross country vacation in my teardrop trailer. My xi3 will most likely stay home and I'll just be using my pedal drive. Just makes more sense to me, no point in paying to register in a state for a year when your only going to be there a week or two... Although I will admit that having a kayak with almost every state registration sticker going down the side would be an pretty cool, expensive but cool. Maybe if my fishing bait didn't say "not for human consumption" on it I could afford it... 🤪
@@AliexFolgueira I do have a car! But i have to drive 40 miles each way to work, and about 1/2 of that is through war zone, if you catch my drift. I cycle about 200-300 miles a week for training. But I am not hating on anyone....it is what it is, and thats all it is.
Alex lol was the Skanu the straw that broke the camels back! I am rigging mine now with a 3.3 motor in the back to cover larger water then a trolling motor on the bow to use when iam standing and fishing.
@@johnbaker4847 Why would anybody with real kayaks would like to use cheap ass stuffs in their videos? Especially when you are trying to make a living doing UA-cam? At least i feel i`m getting an honest opinion with Aliex. Life is about starting small and upgrade anyway you can while you`re at it.
I'm in my late seventies. I pedal for exercise. I catch more fish trolling from my Outback than I ever did paddling and casting. Motors will not replace pedals until solar panels mounted onboard can recharge them fast enough to keep them running all day. If that happens, the only reason I might buy a motor is the maintenance of the outdrive is not something you can predict. It's hard to tell if bearings or cogs in the pedal drive are wearing until you are on the water and need them. I love the Outback's stability. If a motor compromised the VCG it would be a game killer for me.
@@jimfromm3981 Bixpy with the adapter should be around $1400 check this video out on the outback ua-cam.com/video/L6vz0Ig86XM/v-deo.html I have several Bixpy outback videos you can also use the mirage drive adapter
Thing is, I went to the west marine store and picked up a 10 ft dinghy that weighs 100lbs for 600$. Its wider, more stable, solid and has a transom. Why would I get a kayak when that boat is built for fishing and ultra outfit ready? I have a couple of drop stitch yaks I love for shallows and fun paddling but, for fishing the dinghy is undefeated. Especially at 600$ brand new.

So what are you saying buy a paddle kayak and then upgrading with wat u want on your kayak or wat... I wouldn't mind having pedal drive kayak I feel like my legs are stronger than my arms I'm just going to keep watching your videos and make up my mind but let me know wat is the better option if you could take some time let me know thank you have nice day,,, Wisconsin,,,,
My first kayak law is, get what you like 😎 paddle pedal or power or all of it 😎 I got lots of videos here covering everything let me know how I can help
i put a 40lb $150 Minn Kota on my $300 canoe, battery was $170 i think. i can go 10 miles with 3 people, lock the steering and just chill, it's the best.
I generally agree. I have three kayaks (all paddle no peddle). I live in Iowa after moving back from Texas (I know). An Ocean Kayak BG 2 ($899) a Topwater 106 ($699) and a Topwater 120 ($899) all on sale as 2nds from Sierra Trading Post. I fish a lot of rivers. Any pedal would be constantly hitting the river bottom. Also, Kayaks under 13 feet don’t need to be registered, unless you put a motor on them. So, I’m inclined to put a motor on one for lake fishing. I can’t see myself getting a pedal. I know it would be nice to have my hands free at times, but I use an anchor trolley to fish an area and move on.
I have caught 12 good size Stripers this year from 19-26 inch size on Old Town PDL 120 . Pedal drive system is good work out your leg s and I Also ride road bike 🚴♀️ 600 miles already this year. So if your fit stick with pedal or peddle kayak s . If you’re 60 and older yeah go with motor kayak or motor boat
I have a paddle fishing kayak and have been looking at the pedal drive for convenience and easier to troll. Weight is a killer for me and my 15'x25" fiberglass sit on top is lighter than any of the pedal boats. If I need a motor I have a 12' Portabote with a 6 hp engine. It folds for transport and weighs less than most Hobies. By the way I am 82 and I cruise my kayak at 3.5-4 mph depending on conditions.
I have a new Old Town 106 paddle only version. I'm 70ish. If or when I "up grade" it will be to the Old Town 120 Powered by MK. My thinking is this, if the MK failed I can still get it back to shore by paddle without too much extra weight or effort on my part. That will be awhile, if ever. I ❤️ LOVE MY PEDDLE ONLY kayak, it just WORKS.
Meanwhile I still paddle my kayak. I keep it simplistic because I fly fish off my kayak on flats. Less stuff on the deck of my NuCanoe to get caught on.
@@AliexFolgueira I would agree. Pedal is dead. The prices stayed too high and now they are similar in price as motorized yaks. If you’re going pedal, might as well just go motorized. I have a minn Kota for my NuCanoe when I want to go out for a whole day. It was 200 bucks. The pedals for my kayak are over a grand.
motors maybe be the new trend and your first option but having a pedal drive is a good 2nd option/backup incase your motor has a issue out on the lake because no one really wants to paddle a load kayak.
I have a regular trolling motor on my Ascend 12t and it gets me around nicely. I still have my paddle incase I need it but for the most part I'm using my motor to move around.
Pedal kayaks are not dead. Yes, I prefer my motor guide xi3, and I don’t even use my pedal kayak anymore, but many tournaments won’t allow them. But, your points are spot on.
Exactly! Why would you want a pedal instead of motor if you just want to get to your fishing spot? I rigged a trolling motor to my cheapie Lifetime kayak to get back up rivers with current instead of paddling. If I was just going out to fish, I'd go with the motors of course.
Have been kayak fishing last three years have a sea shots 130 with a pole anchor and receiver for $600 I just bought a 1542 with a trailer and 15hp 2020 for $3200 doesn’t make sense for the most part for the price but if it’s what you love then I get it.
Dude.....I am old school. Only paddle. I love the idea of spending 2-4 hrs....taking my time. I may get peddle drive, and vibe, but I am getting a bit exercise, enjoy it much. Pescador sport!

I fish out of a Hobie PA. I’d love to rig it with a trolling motor but I live in Massachusetts and here any boat with a motor must be registered (it may also require paying for a title). I’m old enough to remember when electric motors were exempt. It’s not so much the cost, it’s the money grubbing that bothers me. There has actually been a proposal in this money hungry state to charge a registration fee for human powered watercraft. Luckily that got no traction (for now). I’m sticking with my pedal drive. Full disclosure: I have a bass boat also.
I have a Hobie PA and live in NJ and I remember when electric motors was exempt in this state also and I pay enough in this state and I’m not gonna give them more money by putting a electric motor on my PA and having it registered

For those of us who prefer minimalism. 1 rod, 1 little tackle box with 2 or 3 lures, no trailers no cables no batteries no DIY, just toss my kayak inside the van and be in the water in 5 minutes. Paddle and pedal will always be the choice 😎
Sounds like paddle only will be a more minimalistic approach 😛

Right…….THE ONLY EXERCISE YOU GET………..SAD
Thats what I do
If something happens to your motor or electronics, you can still pedal back.

The pedals are easy to operate and it’s great exercise, so I’m sticking with the pedals.
agreed same here. I may add an motor set up but it would be insane to just rely on the electric motor, i dont trust it for long distance. If something goes wrong you have no way to propel your kayak.
This is the only thing that keeps me from getting something like an auto pilot. I want both pedals and trolling motor just in case. @@jayknight139

Yup
I hear it can be a complete pain especially if u buy it used
True
Adding even the smallest motor of any kind requires you to register with the DMV and put numbers and registration on the kayak. If you do not have the receipt from buying it new, or a prior registration, you will not be allowed to register it and will be fined by every cop who sees you. If you pedal it, you don't need any of that.
🎯🎯🎯
I live in CA bought my kayak used 5 years prior to me putting a trolling motor on it. No recipe, and I thought it was gonna be a nightmare registering it. It wasn't, less than 20 minutes in dmv, and registration was under 20 bucks.
Absolutely, the number one reason not to mess with motors in my state
I have a Hobie Outback and love it, but being in my 70’s, my fishing range is limited.
Boom! I’m happy to see that people see the true meaning of the video

How are you going to mount it do you have the power pole fittings ?
My thoughts as you know aliex, it's to each their own.. But if you want to reach bigger water and get to a spot faster you'll go to motor. I see pdl as a recreational kayak vs fishing. I know many like the exercise and I've thought about pdl... but then on the lake like hearsay 10mph wind, with white caps, and boats causing so much wake it was not fun.. Can't imagine doing that in a pdl. My kayak 106mk did fine.
Can't edit but I meant yesterday not hearsay
To each their own, I do just fine on 10-15mph wind with a pdl drive. That’s why I love the pdl drive so much, it’s so versatile.
Your totally making sense bro! Those light weight batteries are the bomb. Happy motoring!
Happy motoring 😎😌
Good video.
you are spot on! thanks for the thoughtful comment!
I agree. I bought a Grumman 17 ft canoe for $2,000 and use a 6 hp Thai longtail that cost me $584 in 2014. I never understood the point of a pedal kayak. For the money some people are putting into these pedal-yaks, then you just buy a used jest ski fir fishing.
Some places still don’t allow motors, I find myself using a motorized kayak more and more
For me, the entire idea of a kayak is the minamalist, lightweight, small, close to nature aspects. As well as the exercise. The last thing I want to do is have a bunch of gadgets motors and batteries adding weight and complexity to it. If I want all that, I'd just buy a john boat.
That’s the beauty of kayaks you can have it your way, paddle pedal or power or all
You crazy!! I am crying because it is winter and I can't get out in my pedal kayak for 4 months!
We just got our pedal kayaks in August and only used them for 2 months before winter. Everything is ice right now, and all I want to do is take my kayak out! It doesn't make a very good snow sled, though. 🤪
Pedal kayaks have some specific benefits:
1) exercise
2) you can use pedal drives in bodies of water where motors aren’t allowed
3) you can use pedal drives in tournaments where motors aren’t allowed
4) pedal drives have fewer moving parts to break
5) pedal drives don’t require hardly any maintenance
6) much easier to pull up a pedal drive than trim an engine in shallows, flats, oysters, etc.
7) pedal drives are stealthier
8) cost; your points didn’t make much sense to me because you’re talking about pedal + motor cost vs paddle + motor cost.
9) as you know, Hobie drives come completely out & there’s a cassette that goes in there. No hole. The bike style drives are much bigger, bulkier and in the way.
10) much lighter weight & easier transport/setup with a pedal drive vs motor
1- you can still paddle a motorized kayak and get a more complete exercise
2- two is true but I haven’t encountered a spot yet that don’t let me use motors
3- the tournaments that don’t allow motors are few and will be fewer soon
4- pedal drives break just like a trolling motor, the idea of zero maintenance is not really true. I have trolling motors I never serviced yet plenty of drives I had to fix or serviced or replace
5. /see 4
6- you know that there are so many motors setups for example the autopilot 120 is way easier to pull up than any any drive there is! So is the Bixpy in the shearwater..again not a valid point. I’ll cover 7-10 in the next comment
8 cost why would you pay $1000 more if in the end you gonna put an ipilot unit on it ? I think you should rewatch it get the 120 paddle only add i-Pilot instead of getting 120 pdl and add i-Pilot and never use the drive
9. Cassette does nothing really and who takes that fishing anyways no one, in the other hand a paddle kayak only won’t have that hole
10 is is not true, Bixpy weights about the same as the hobie drive for examples
Nope i looked it up. Bixpy weighs 11 lbs plus a 7 lb battery. Hobie Mirage drive weighs under 8 lbs. Hobie 360 drive weighs 9.5 lbs.
@UCIrw3uW8CpJZ3m1WODz2gFw 1300 but why pay $1000 for something you won’t use ? Again there so many motors at different budgets and capabilities you get what works for you I think you shred the auto pilots
Is it better to put a motor to the front or to the back?
Can I fish standing on a kayak with a foot pedal as people do on a bass boat?
Umm control remote motors go better in the front, others the rear is better
After paddling for years I went to go purchase a pedal kayak. When the person told me the price difference between the pedal and the motor and the motor was cheaper I went for that! I have come to love my motorized kayak I find it still easy to launch And gives me more access on the water.. Mine is transom mounted so I have the entire cockpit open! 🐟🎣👍🏼
So you know exactly what I was talking about 😀 happy to know I’m not alone

I love my topwater, but it will not handle the waves and wind like the hobie, waves come crashing over the sides, I feel much more unsafe and like I'm going to flip.,
My 106mk eats white caps like they are nothing. I have given hobies away. Old town all day. #hobiekiller
So I shoudlnt get a Bonafide p127? I should just get a paddle kayak and if i want a motor get one?
I would just get the Bonafide pwr 129 and add motors, see my videos in the channel about it, unless you just want a drive and will not motorized it, i would just save the money, unless i fish a lot of big water, like open ocean fishing and stuff where i may want to have the drive as a back up
@@AliexFolgueira thank you for replying. So I have watched pretty much all your videos man. I think you’re hilarious and very genuine and I appreciate that! My whole thing is this. I want bonafide cause I can leave drive off and it has better paddling and a smaller drive hole for less water to get in (any way to seal this?). I prefer my paddle boat.

It doesn't mean they are dead it means pedal kayaks are going to become a less hot item and the supply will only increase and the price will drop until people who maybe don't have 2k to drop on one can afford it
Everything is getting more expensive
When they stop selling and the supply goes up the cost will drop. That's how it works

And better !
Why not just buy a boat?
Isn’t a “kayak “ a boat ?
I do wish I had a bixpy mainly for speed but having a pedal drive seems like a must for me.
Agreed! That’s why the shearwater is so epic ! Can do anything

@helenodetroyo7035 but the phone in your pocket has a lithium battery, arent you worry about it?
Motorizing kayaks is cheaper. If you can work with your hands you can modify almost any kayak to take at least a trolling motor. From what I've noticed watching so many videos of people modding their yaks spend a minimum of somewhere around $150 to $200 additional to the price of their yaks maybe even less if they already have a trolling motor and some recycled building materials.
Hell look at that pelican catch power you reviewed... $200 Walmart trip has that thing up and running and it's still way cheaper than the high end Hobies
That’s right i motorized my first ever kayak for like $100 total including motor and I did a diy steering and all it was epic
What about lakes and bodies of what where motors are prohibited ?
While I agree with your premise…unfortunately… electric motors BREAK DOWN!!! and having the pedal drive … gets you back to the launch ramp… been there!!! paddling this bigger … heavier… kayaks is prehistoric…I like the confidence of have THREE methods of powering my kayaks… MOTORS R O C K!!!
Pedal drives have never broke down...
@@lowlife7453 lol
You have a manual 360 motor for like $250…
The reason in my opinion is there are places where I fish you can’t have motors but I use the trolling motor on bigger lakes
What motor are you rocking
I agree with you Aliex. Makes more sense and economical to upgrade a paddle kayak. Maybe for people that don’t fish they may still like the pedal kayaks, but for avid anglers you need precise trolling motors.
It is so difficult to me to take anything else fishing if i know i have plenty of clearance to use the motor

Sounds like you want a boat and not a kayak
Motorized kayak? Just buy a 12-14ft boat lol
why?
Sticking with pedal!
I think old town should send you an autopilot! Damn I should have asked them before COVID you would be the perfect fit
@@AliexFolgueira lol! I can't imagine how many kayaks you have in your garage!
Better off using human power...keeps you fit...unless you are a lazy ass fat body. Same goes for bikes vs e-bikes.

Anyone here try those lithium Batteries? YEAH they're expensive..

I’m going to put a torqueedo on my kaku Zulu only to get where I wanna go. Once I get into the creek or marsh system gotta use the pedal system.

What’s your take ?
Yeah here's the thing buddy, a lot of kayak tournaments are no motors allowed so 🤷♂️. That does it for me right there. They're definitely not dead. 👍

So you are in team “pedal yaks are dead “?
@@AliexFolgueira I would agree. Pedal is dead. The prices stayed too high and now they are similar in price as motorized yaks. If you’re going pedal, might as well just go motorized. You made a very valid point to your argument. I have a pedal drive Native 12.5 and I may add a motor to the rear of it…someday.
add the motor, do it right and you will be happy you did
motors maybe be the new trend and your first option but having a pedal drive is a good 2nd option/backup incase your motor has a issue out on the lake because no one really wants to paddle a load kayak.
I have a regular trolling motor on my Ascend 12t and it gets me around nicely. I still have my paddle incase I need it but for the most part I'm using my motor to move around.
That’s the way to go
