Best review ever for the Riot Mako series 👍👍👍
Can you still paddle with a kayak paddle with your hands and use the foot paddles? or because of the speed you would just get in the way of the kayak going forward? I like kayaks, and I always thought it was great that I could enjoy the outdoors and exorcise, and always wished I could exorcise both upper and lower body, what do you think? Thanks for the video.
I must agree 👍👍👍
For the 12 not the 10
@@melvinudal8552 you can still paddle either of these kayaks. In fact they have spot for storing paddle.
My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!
Wow what an informative product review. I'm the water sports / kayak buyer for Big 5 Sporting Goods in California and I'm in discussions with the area rep to bring these in to our stores as a test. Your review is going to make my decision much easier! Thank you!
Just wanted to say thank you! Your past experiences with this kayak and helpful comments on other threads gave me the confidence to buy my Mako 10, ironically less than 24hrs before this video was released. I figured if the guy who pedals practically every kayak every year felt the Mako line was good enough to own 2 for his personal fleet, that speaks volumes. This video is going to help people and Riot so much in giving people the confidence to move forward. Cheers!
Nice to see someone who gives truly honest review
Mako 10 is perfect for me. I’m 5”7 and 155 lbs so I think it’ll be a good fit. Easier to transport too
Hi, I'm interested in the 10footer as well , was wondering if you bought one and if so , wouldn't mind some input from you. Thank you
Thanks for the review I’m looking for my first pedal driven kayak and this was very helpful!
My yak, Radar 135, utilizes the track mounted seat as well. If you want to store it at the dock/canal for ready use, store it upside down on two lengths of 6x6 lumber. I used a a bungee hook to keep the seat folded down, then just flipped it over. Keeps the yak off the ground, keeps the sun from beating on the seat, and the bungee keeps the seat back from flopping on the ground when inverted.
Thanks for the tip. I forgot that Radar 135 had similar. I definitely like easily removed seats, but at this budget price can’t expect everything.
Well done. Re: the seat; place a large enough garbage or leaf bag over it; the draw strings will keep it in place and that may protect it, to some degree from the elements. I own a 12 foot pescador and do not understand why manufacturers place fishing rod holders behind the seat; unless you are very young or a contortionist reaching for equipment behind you on a somewhat unstable kayak is a PITA.
Thanks for the comment. Great tips. I agree with statements on rod holder placement. I kinda wish I could buy most kayaks without the rod holders and install them myself.
Great review! It's difficult to find thorough reviews of the cheaper pedal kayaks. About the only negative I can give these kayaks is that if you're tall or average height with longer legs, this kayak may not allow you to adjust the seat far enough back to allow for a comfortable pedaling position. I felt like I was 2-3" too close to the pedals even when the seat was as far back as it could go. I'm 6'3", but only have a 33" inseam, so my legs aren't terribly long. I only quickly tried it, so it could've also been that I wasn't positioned in the seat properly, etc., but regardless I think it's a tight fit for taller people, so if you're taller, you may want to try it before buying it. Otherwise, it's a really nice, inexpensive pedal drive kayak option.
Another good solid review. Always glad when the author doesn't praise everything on the yak. Will be considering this one (the 12)
Thanks for your honest reply. I actually have a Old Town Topwater PDL, and it is very heavily built. Was considering a second kayak in the 12 ft range, and this ariot Mako 12 would make for an affordable addition!
peaks my interest into the Riot Mako's
I like how you can be a teenager or a kid who likes kayak fishing and if you save up you can afford this kayak
Just learned of Riot Makos today.Think they will work great for me and my budget. Thanks for sharing!!
Good luck trying to find a Riot Mako 10 for $1K.
@@dgriffin6074 Guess it'll be used then,lol
Finally a video that gives insight on cheap good kayaks
The riot mako is definitely the dream! Gonna use it troll for walleye and trout out on Green Bay if I do end up getting it. Dream yak
That's why you have that contour there is for the top of the pedal drive to lock in the up position. If it was modeled that way they couldn't have it lock I'm place there
THIS is how you do a kayak review.
Yes!
I've been using fishing out of a Mako 10 for 18 months and I am very very satisfied with it. I too found that the seat was hard to remove and did a mod to it. I took off the 2 screw on blocks at the back of the seat, cut out a section on the blocks just big enough for the tube to snap on. The 2 blocks are then screwed onto the tracks and left there permanent. To put on the seat, I just slide the front inserts into the front track then snap the back into the 2 blocks that are left there permanently. This mod has saved me an enormous amount of time.
Great tip 👍
😅

I continue to be very interested in your demos of the Hobie inflatables. You seemed so excited about their performance, I was intrigued. I am older, really older (73) and I have had a bad back for many years. I have been looking at the Feel Free Lure series because people rave about the comfortable seat, the weight of the 10.5 and/or the 11.5 and the “Wheel in the Keel”. These features make the Lure series very attractive to me. I love fly fishing and I don’t want my age and my limitations to put an end to 71 years of trout fishing! My father taught me when I was 2 and also gave me his utter love and joy in the sport. So, could you please tell me about how easy or difficult it is to set up the inflatable and how comfortable the seat is, taking into consideration a bad back and age? I would appreciate and value your opinion.
100% I think you would love the Hobie iTrek series. Very low snag opportunities for fly fishing, ultra lightweight, comfortable for all day, and fast! I love it. I’m 210lbs and 6ft 2in. I loved the iTrek 9 most.
Thanks for the information!
Awesome in depth review. Especially the tipping! Thanks.
U where very fair on them 🤙
in Turkey, in the market there is a brand called FreeCamp and they also have Pedal Drive kayaks. Have you ever heard this brand? The model name is: Allure.
Have not heard of that particular kayak make and model. The last two years tons of companies started producing pedal kayaks. Many are just rebranding pedal kayaks imported from China. So you will see some kayaks that look identical but are branded with two different company names. Some companies like Riot have their own unique kayak designs and sometimes even own the Chinese factories but are making the kayaks in China simply to reduce price. Hope this makes sense. For example if you look at Alibaba website you will see a lot of kayaks with no branding but they look like kayaks that big brands are selling.
@@KayakDIY many thanks. It seems, the entry point to buy a pedal kayak is 1.000 USD. Am I right?
@@adventurelover6955 yes. The cheapest pedal kayaks are pretty much $1,000.
My favorite pedal kayak for the money is the Ocean Kayak Malibu PDL for around $1800 online. It is the smoothest and most reliable pedal kayak I have ever owned. It also never gets water inside the hull. Very well made.
I've been looking at getting into this for fishing. This was very helpfull, thanks man
no problem.
Great video iv been looking into pulling the trigger on a pedal yak but for over 2k I don't see the point . 1k is more a decent range and if they do the same thing as the higher ends hell why not
There are definitely a lot of $1,000 to $1400 pedal kayaks now. Seastream, Vanhunks, and several others have introduced more affordable pedal kayaks. Hobie also has the Passport series.
I'm sold on the 12. Great video!
I’d be curious how replacement pedals would be to install Shimano bicycle SPD clip in pedals for more pedaling power and efficiency. I also wonder if a higher performance 3 blade prop might work? Otherwise, looks awesome! As a former cyclist turned kayaker, these mods would be pretty cool, especially if they could increase the cruise speed of these boats!
It would make sense to me that a very simple one way flapper style valve, lightly spring loaded, in the scupper holes would let water 💧 go down but not come back up. Easily removable, and could be opened manually if need be also. But a great review, thankyou.
Valve scupper plugs do exist.
Various brands. amzn.to/3LS64ch
These would be perfect for my wife and son to use . Have a good weekend and stay safe Jimmy from Massachusetts
Same to you Jimmy....thanks for stopping by. BTW hope to vacation up in your area sometime. Never been to that part of the U.S.
Very well thought out review thanks for the 411 info on both made well kayaks.
Thanks for checking out the channel and the feedback on the vid. 🙂👍
Excellent video, now I know which one to buy, Thank You
I am looking for a kayak for large lake. 175 miles of shoreline to fish. Been thinking of pedal kayak. Will be my first kayak !! Tell me what you think ,would a paddle type be better for a first timer?
,
Awesome review. They would be awesome kayaks for those who don't fish much for the price. And they would be great for the family who just wants to get out and enjoy nature.
Hobie, Pelican, Feelfree - I’m still undecided. I’ll check out your reviews.
You mentioned your weight but I didn’t catch your height. Also, how stable is the kayak in moderate waves, say 1 - 2 foot waves. One more thing, I’m not a kayak builder and know little about the physics of it, but why doesn’t the kayak manufacturers fill the hull with foam type flotation? I feel this would reduce water in hull and add more stability. I was going to purchase a homie 12 but after this fantastic video I wil certainly get a mako 12. Thanks for this excellent video.
I’m 6ft 2in tall.
Foam blocks are often added as emergency floats and to provide support to hull in certain areas of kayaks. Most are not fully filled with foam as it adds weight...and would increase shipping costs as well as reduce in hull storage capabilities.
Looks just as good as a hobi with features etc, and I don't even own a kayak 🙂
Thanks for the nice in water review.
That was a great comparison! I didn’t know there were pedal drive kayaks so cheep, thank you!!! 🙂
These are the cheapest pedal kayaks on the market unless you buy used and find a good used deal.
I’m surprise they are both rated for the same weight capacity, I did notice how off centered the weight was on the 10 foot, rear was deep in the water and front was out of the water. I’m 6’1” and 265lbs, I’d have to go for the 12’. I own the Ocean Kayak 12’ Prowler Big Game 2, it was the same price as this 12’ is 5 years ago!!! What a great value!!!
That 12 footer looks nice. Thorough review :)
Thanks Chuck. Definitely doing my best to be thorough. Part of the reason why I waited so long to upload on these kayaks. Wanted to test them enough to determine strengths and weaknesses as well as gain insight in the durability.
Great review. Very honest and thorough. Checked out the link but Amazon didn't have very much in the description. Does the $1300 (12 ft) come with the anchor trolley lines installed? Is it made in Canada or China? Thanks!
does the prop ever encounter any issue with overgrown underwater plants? or hitting anything unexpected, something solid.
Awesome vid and camera work. And extra likes for falling in the water.
I'd love to see a comparison between the riot 10 and riot 12, and the hoodoo tempest pedal drive kayak because of how close their prices are.
Since I’ve lost my vision I need a tandem kayak. What would you suggest for a sit on paddle kayak for the sound and bay areas?
We are the same height and weight which did you feel more comfortable peddling on the 10' or 12'? I saw another review the said the 10' felt cramp and couldn't move the seat back to accommodate 6'2'?
The 12ft model was way more comfortable. The 10ft Mako seat felt slightly too far back and out of balance with my large height and weight. The 12ft model was much more balances and I loved the hull design and scupper drainage system for rough waters.
Great video. Am thinking to get a mako, still not sure which one though . They both have thier pros and cons. Q- does both kayaks comes with foot pegs.? Thanks.
I owned a Riot Mako 12 Angler for 1 & 1/2 yr. I found that it doesn’t hold up. The body is too thin plastic (making it easy to carry). Body gave out where its important. & the drive SUCKs. I used it (drive) up in that time, & Riot replaced it. I recommend instead getting a Hobie knock off for $1500. IMO. (But I fished alot)
Great review. (Mako 12) Actually I have decided to move on to a different brand/design. Cumbersome pedal drive. Flat bottom and easy to tip. Missing rod holders in key places just to name a few. Thanks!!!
Thanks for sharing!
I do have one question. What did you think of the thinner plastic.?
I know it's a lot thinner than most kayaks out there and that's why its so much cheeper and lighter
I think it is plenty thick to give many years of service. If you use a kayak cart or carry the kayak instead of dragging it then it shouldn’t be an issue. That is just my opinion. Being lighter weight it is certainly easier to transport. If you are really concerned get a keel protector like gator patch.
The next best kayaks with thicker hull in my opinion are the Lightning kayak Strike and the Ocean Kayak Malibu PDL. Seen both of those kayaks consistently under $2000. They have thick ultra durable hulls.
Great review and demo , I’m 5’-7 would there be a pedal reach problem. Reason for asking I had a chance to demo a couple and both were hard to reach on the long side of the stroke
You already tried these kayaks out and struggled to reach pedals?
If so then I guess you answered your own question. Although the seat is adjustable to bring person closer to the pedals. I believe their was about a foot of adjustability or more.
KayakDIY I haven’t had a chance to try these , I tried another brand.
skankhunt42 maybe do need seat raised a little cause the short side of the pedal stroke knee in chest.
Is it easy to stow a paddle if you want to take one along? Great review!
Yes, it has a paddle keeper.
This might be a stupid question but do people cash-out the kayak or is there an option for down payment?
Do you think a 260lb 5’ 11” would work well?
On the Mako 12 sure. On Mako 10 I think performance would suffer a little.
Awesome video. Thank you for breaking down the specs of both kayak. I am sure what type to get. Thank you 😁
Hey there, id really love to see a review of the hoodoo tempest 120p. There are only a few reviews for it avail, but none from UA-camres im familiar with whos opinions i trust
Ik this was months ago but I was going to get one but I saw some reviews on some of their other kayaks that the colors didn’t show up very well
@@brendanfire9820 its ok. I pulled the trigger on one and i l9ve it. Really sleek and the colors and sharp. Mine was pretty well made but one of the custom mods i ordered could have been installed with a but more fore thought. Other than that i love yak
Thanks very informative
I called Riot few days ago. They are revamping their website and going to hopefully make it easier to buy their kayaks online and find local dealers. People want to buy them, but right now biggest complaint folks have was not being able to find one to buy online. 😂
Until then anyone wanting to buy one can message me at our website and I will link them up with my primary contact at Riot.
Does the lower unit break away (ride up) if you suddenly run over a submersed object?
No, but I have hit rocks really hard and nothing broke.
Love your honesty
Looks like a nice entry level Kayak!
Thanks for video. Very informative
Awesome review! I think they may have made the seats to be replaceable to make up for the low price.
Great work man!!
Thanks Rob. Appreciate the kind words. Definitely try my best. 🙂
Thank you for the review, I wish Riot had dealers on the west coast, I would love to try one of these out on the Puget Sound
Very nice review.
I watched another UA-camr that had a big issue with water coming up quite freely via the scuppers on the Mako 12. Can someone please clarify this possible issue?
Maybe inexperienced? Idk. With all sit on tops water will occasionally splash up from scuppers on less you put in one way valve plugs. I actually thought the Mako 12 had an awesome scupper system. I want a kayak that drains quickly for offshore. This kayak does that well in my opinion.
@@KayakDIY awesome thanks for letting me know
Will you review the Point 65 Kingfisher modular kayak?
I want to so bad! I messaged them.
They use the same pedal drive as the Mako series. Tell them you want me to review it as well and maybe they will agree to send me one! I wish I could buy every kayak to test and have a larger library of reviews, but kayaks are pricey and I simply can’t afford to buy them all. The Point 65 Kingfisher looks pretty dang awesome. Would be awesome for those with limited storage space or small vehicles. I’ve liked some of their other models.
In your opinion how does they compare mostly the 12 to a hobbie?
Compared to Hobie’s similar priced Passport 12 the Riot Mako 12 has a hull design that I like a bit more. Also the instant reverse of the Mako makes it more practical for fishing and maintaining position in current. Passport 12 is great, but the Mako 12 has features I have grown to like more.
@@KayakDIY Thank you for that honest answer. I have the mako 12 and will be ordering the steering conversion kit. Mine is has setting on the side and I like it next to the seat so much better.
How far back does the hatch go?
I've really been looking forward to a review of these kayaks. What do you think about the structural rigidity? You've been around many kayaks, does the kayak skin feel thick enough for long term strength?
It is no doubt lighter weight and won’t likely handle dragging as long as a Hobie Outback. In my opinion from what I see it is SLIGHTLY thinner and SLIGHTLY softer plastic. I base that statement on side by side comparisons when dragging kayak over my sea wall. The Riot Mako would leave noticeable plastic on the concrete sea wall and my Hobies and pricier kayaks wouldn’t leave any noticeable plastic behind. When using these kayaks that still wasn’t a major concern still of mine. However, if I’m being critical I would say these are not going to be as resistant to dragging damage as a Hobie. Then again they are nearly a third the price. If this is your number one concern might I suggest the Lightning kayak Strike as the next lowest price pedal kayak or possibly a Ocean Kayak Malibu PDL. I have found both of those kayaks under $2000 consistently. They are premium kayak hulls on a budget. Equal if not better than Hobie. At $1000-1299 the Riot kept me more than satisfied.
Really good reviews,...you don't have to spend upwards of two grand to get a pedal drive!
Is this the same pedal drive used in the Point 65 Kingfisher?
Yes. Impulse drive they call it.
@@KayakDIY Great thanks so much for the reply. And thanks for the video, great stuff! Subscribed
Can you swap out the cranks on the pedal drive for longer ones?
If I had a dollar for every time he said scupper holes... great review
Scupper 🕳 😂
so the saying "you get what you paid for" apply to these boats?
the water runs into the scupper holes and then ends up where ..? in the Body .? @6:55
That Mako 10 looks great.
Love how it says under $1000 yet the yellow one is $1,400
The red one was under $1000 at time of viewing. Chill out. Times change. Blame Biden’s inflation and awesome economic policies. 🤦🏼♂️
I d love to win some kayak gear seeing as I'm thinking of buying very soon in spring
What gear seems appealing to you as a new purchaser? I haven’t decided what I’m giving away yet. I will likely draw the winner from the comments and reveal in my next video.
@@KayakDIY a nice paddle I heard factory cheep out on those alot Frome what I have been reading in review s

I like kayaks, and I always thought it was great that I could enjoy the outdoors and exorcise, and always wished I could exorcise both upper and lower body, what do you guys think?
Why don’t these kayaks come standard with an outrigger? Wouldn’t that help it from tipping over??
Does the pedal drive go in reverse too and are these kayaks only offered in store?
Been looking at the Moken with the keel wheel.
New Moken Pedal is pretty cool.
I seen a video once with a kayak you could flip a switch with your foot and the drive would come up a little that way when your in shallow water you can still use the drive but I can't remember which one it is can you help me? I fish a lot of marsh and shallow water
Pedal or motor? Did it have propeller style pedal drive or fins like Hobie kayaks?
@@KayakDIY pedal
I think that's the perception and wilderness systems pedal drive, I think you remove the pin and pops up
@@AliexFolgueira no it was more like a little foot action cause the whole drive slid up in position and you can still pedal
@@wayfararout6258 ohh the Jackson fd drives can adjust the prop trim, can still pedal at 6 inches of water
How hard are these on the lower back, I rented a paddle boat recently and after 20 minutes my back was killing me
Their seat works OK. I had several trips up to 6 hours on a Mako 12, and no complains or discomfort. The kayak has good stability, so it allows you to stand up and stretch your back when needed.
Does the “motor” underneath lay flat for really shallow spots so you can paddle?
The propeller drive can be lifted out and stored on deck for paddling shallow water.
Are there any Riot Mako dealers on the west coast of Florida, from Crystal River to St. Pete?
Is there anywhere to add a fish finder and wiring?
The 12 is actually not bad.
Great video!
I'm surprised you didn't stand on the twelve!
Yeah I am too. Haha 😂
It is pretty dang stable. Would have to be a big offshore wave and be standing off center to fall over. Heck I could probably still stand up on it even then, but I got good sense of balance. Things I really liked on it was the self bailing water shedding design. It does that very well. Also the pedal drive is simple in design with minimal parts and so they have been reliable. I have 5 riot pedal drives and never had a failure. Never even had a prop break. They just work. Not my favorite pedal kayak by any means, but one of my favorite budget kayaks for sure.

Thanks!
Looking for a kayak for kiddos. My son is 10 and about 4 foot is. You think he’d be able to reach pedals on it?
I would look for a gently used hobie sport. They are shorter and sometimes cheaper.
Thank ya. I’m around Daytona so unfortunately used kayaks are usually the same price as new ones for some odd reason. Apparently oyster bar rash and faded plastic only drops the sellers price by $50 lol
How shallow will they run?
Thank you I want a pedal kayak
