Here in Italy, "Trading Places" has become, over the years, the most traditional Christmas movie. Is broadcast every Christmas eve in one of the most popular TV channels and every year it marks an audience record.

"He's (Ackroyd) on his knees, like Eddie Murphy was at the beginning of the movie." I have seen this movie.. I couldn't even count how many times; it's one of my favorites. And I have never made that connection. Billy Rae on his knees for the "legless veteran" con, and then Lewis on his knees outside the bank. Never noticed that before! Awesome eye for detail!

If you want to see a really great Dan Ackroyd movie (other than Ghostbusters), you should check out "The Blues Brothers" (1980). It's really funny movie, with a lot great musicians singing and playing some great songs. I'd probably recommend the theatrical version for your first time watching, the extended version can drag a bit for some people, at least in some of the reactions I've seen.

John Landis directed both this and The Blues Brothers. One of his little signatures is hiding a reference to a fictional movie called "See You Next Wednesday" somewhere.
Also the desk cop who mocks Louis about his opera tickets is Frank Oz, the voice of Miss Piggy. He plays basically the same character in The Blue Brothers. There's also an inside-joke reference to Miss Piggy in TBB by the toy store customer just before the mall sequence. The tax clerk at the end is Steven Spielberg, BTW.

Actually Eddie Murphy had other projects before this movie. Trading Places (1983) was Eddie's 2nd movie. His first movie was 48 HOURS in 1982. After Trading Places he also did his stand up comedy show DELIRIOUS in 1983. Before all that, Eddie was also a cast member on the TV comedy show SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE from 1980 to 1984. In 1984 Eddie did BEST DEFENSE and BEVERLY HILLS COP. In 1986 Eddie did THE GOLDEN CHILD. In 1987 Eddie did BEVERLY HILLS COP 2 and also his stand up comedy movie RAW. In 1988 Eddie did COMING TO AMERICA.

_Trading Places_ is my favorite Christmas movie, so I was thrilled you reacted to it, Nox, with your infectious spirit and sharp eye for detail. I never caught that Winthorpe had the same photo of his girlfriend at his office that he did at home.
This film has the most arcane climax in a hit movie, ever. When I was 10, I had to ask my dad to explain it to me. I have a friend who knows about the stock exchange and has broken it down for me more recently. There are entire articles devoted to explaining the mechanics of it, which I think is brilliant. There's also a generation of men who went into the financial services sector because they saw _Trading Places_ as kids and wanted to be the Duke Brothers. In the movie they saw, Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche were actually the good guys. Wall Street welcomed them, I'm sure.

I just don't have the mind for it I guess. I get compound interest fine and have for 20 years, and I get that you want to buy low and sell high.... but for whatever reason understanding what happens with the orange crop befuddles me. My take is that they were selling at the highest point when the Duke's were buying, then when the prices tumbled because there was an excess of harvest the Duke's had lost all it's value? heh, No one has every told me in a way I could interpret it!

Eddie Murphy had already done a great skit on SNL wearing whiteface, so think of Dan Akroyd's blackface as balancing it out. ...Also, everyone, black, white, or east asian, thought it was hilarious at the time. The whole black face hysteria is just a recent thing made up. No one cared back then and most people don’t really care now. It’s fake outrage started by blue haired white college girls. Never in a million years would it cross my mind to be insulted if someone black had a white face for comedic effect. Total nonsense. There is a lot of people in this world who mean you harm without reaching to make innocent people out to be the devil for imaginary insults that were not meant to be insulting. Of course like always with woke nonsense. They cherry pick when it’s offensive and when it isn’t. Which seems to always be based on political to try to fit into specifically social circles. Kind of pathetic. It’s always nice when white people tell black people when to be offended!🙄

    Merry Christmas! 🎅 🎄
Let me explain a little what happened on the exchange for anyone who is confused by the ending. Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy "sell" commodity shares while the price is high, before they owned any shares. They then had to "buy" the same amount of shares that they sold earlier when the price fell. It is called "short-sell" and it's perfectly legal, although there are rules governing how this happens. It is a risk because if the price of the commodity or stock goes up, you could lose a lot of money. We are seeing a Hollywood version of a "short-sell" event.
Fun Fact: The World Trade Center's commodity exchange, Comex, was used for the trading scenes, and real traders performed alongside professional extras. As reported in studio production notes, the shoot at Comex was initially planned for a weekday, but the appearance of Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy on the set disrupted business activities, and six billion dollars of trading was halted. The shoot was rescheduled for a weekend.

The train scene and Dan Aykroyd playing a Rastafarian is an interesting window into how political correctness has run amok over the last 40 years. When this movie was made, blackface was understood to be racist and inappropriate. Of course, at the same time, blackface was also understood to be a specific style of make-up that came out of minstrelsy shows. This scene wouldn't have been considered blackface since the goal wasn't to make a mockery of black people, it was just a *disguise.*

One of my favorite movies. Trading Places was written and produced by Aaron Russo. Russo also Wrote and produced Bette Midler's hit movie- The Rose. Russo integral in bringing Led Zeppelin to the U.S. for their very first tour in the late 60's. His business and Hollywood success brought him to be invited to the inner circles of the elite where he made friends with Nick Rockefeller of the famous elite Rockefeller family. Rockefeller let him in on and was shown the inner workings of how these oligarchs ran the world above and beyond elected western governments. He refused to be apart of these secret societies and this was a major influence in his writing the screenplay for Trading Places. Later in life he would learn that he had terminal Cancer. Knowing that he wasn't long for this world he decided to put out a documentary called: America: Freedom to Fascism. This movie exposed how the International Banking Cartel controls the world Through the ownership of Central Fiat banking systems such as the Federal Reserve. This documentary woke me up to the likes of Ron Paul, who is a feature interview in the film. It was this interview that caused me to become a conservative. Not a Republican, but a political conservative by its true definition. In that gov. should be kept as small and non-intrusive as possible. The chaos we are experiencing today is due to the silent majority trying to return back the control of our government from these oligarchs. That is why the have to demonize Trump and others at every turn. Remember, He is not a life long politician and if you look into his past he has always spoke truth to this power. Trump is not special, they will demonize and destroy anyone who challenges them, like democrats Tulsi Gabbard, Dennis Kucinich and conservatives like Ron & Rand Paul, Desantis & Kari Lake. Oligarch George Soros was a turncoat jew, and as a boy worked with the German SS in exposing jews so they could be hunted down. Soros has for years usurped various democratic governments through financing Chaos. Presently he financed and provides legal help to the Corrupt BLM and Anti-fa movements that allowed violent rioting and burning of businesses taking advantage of the plight of marginalized communities and weaponizing them. Much like Hitler did with the Brown Shirts.

A few people would be out in public and one says "My broker is EF Hutton and he told me...", and everyone in the room would go quiet and everyone would look at the person speaking. And the tagline was "When EF Hutton talks, people listen."
The two baggage handlers on the train were played by Al Franken and Tom Davis, who used to perform together in skits on SNL as Franken and Davis. Franken later became a US Senator.
Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche (The Dukes) were real stars from the golden age of Hollywood. Ameche was known to be one of Hollywoods last true gentlemen, a real class act. He felt so bad using the N word and other racist comments, he was always apologizing to Eddie Murphy who had to reassure him that it was ok. I think one of his last big hits was Ron Howard's Cocoon (1985)
Some other great 80's comedies are (I don't know what you've seen already) Ghostbusters, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Princess Bride, This is Spinal Tap, The Blues Brothers, and A Fish Called Wanda.

Three SNL alums kickin' it old school (ex Senator and SNL comedian Al Franken is in this briefly toward the end on the train). I love it. I'm glad you could see some of the more "unPC" humor in the light of the time period in which it was filmed and not get too distraught over it and start tearing the movie to shreds from then on like some younger generation film reactors out there.
You should definitely check out "This is Spinal Tap," one of the best mockumentaries out there, which was released around the same time and was directed by Rob Reiner.
Hope you had a Merry Christmas!

All those early 80s to 90s movies, involving directing by frank Oz, (he always puts himself in his movies...look for the bald guy with glasses!) and films involved with acting ,writing, production ,etc., with Ramis, Ivan Reitman,Akroyd, Murray etc., and these monster comedies that first used the ultra serious John Williams for music!!!(Animal House !)was just all comedy genius! Going back to Animal House, blues Brothers, Stripes, of course the Ghostbusters stuff....it's just all comedy gold! Pro tip, U WILL see a cameo again of the Duke Brothers, in the first Coming to America, also an Eddie Murphy movie! The Duke Brothers are Old School Hollywood royalty! Been acting since black and white! Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche!
Also about commodity trading.... it's brutal! It's like day trading on steroids! And unless it's changed, this is how it's worked in America for over 200 years! Ur busy, sells, holds, boss traders, floor traders, u name it, do Business right then and there, on the floor, and money is owed, at end of day! The sad part is? They never did a sequel! Pro tip... The shorter freight handler guy is Al Franken, long time SNL writer, became a senator from Minnesota, and got his ass kicked out for massive amounts of misogyny and sexual harassment!
The ape costume guy is Jim Belushi brother of the masterful John Belushi, and did many good movies himself, all the way back to Thief, Curly Sue, K-9 cop, an Arnold movie, and Return to Me.
This was Murphy's first movie after SNL, his first was the greatest, 48 hours! Imagine ur twenty or twenty one years old and ur first 6 movies are 48 hours, this, Best Defense, golden child, Beverly hills cop and Coming to America, and of course SNL,which akroyd was a first major veteran of. Eddie joined SNL at 18! He left and did this, I'm not sure he was even 21 yet! But I'm sure while on SNL, akroyd recognized the talent!!

13:16 this reminds me of Jens Soering. He was a 19-year-old German student living in America in the 80s. He murdered his girlfriends parents at her request.
He thought because he was a son of a diplomat and well educated even though he was only 19, he thought he was smarter than the cops and the attorneys. He thought he would never get caught or his crime but he did.
When he went to prison, he was totally unaware of the violence that goes on in prisons and he sought out to Bring it to everyone’s attention and even wrote books about it thinking that he had some great revelation that no one else knew. Living in a totally different world, he was unaware of how the other half lives. He ended up spending nearly 30 years in prison.
