  • The OnePlus 5 is a fast, powerful and well made phone for around $500. It offers most of the stuff you would find in a flagship device for a lower cost. However, there's 2 things still holding it back.

What do you guys think of the OnePlus 5? I like it, still one of the best $500 phones. But I think they could of made it better, especially with all the hype around the camera.

I was waiting for this phone too, ugghhhhhhh. So I'm debating whether or not to get the Lg G6 or wait for the new V30. Have you heard anything about the V30 in terms of release in Canada?

Matthew Moniz Even with some of its shortcomings, I honestly love this phone. It's solid, offers most of the latest and greatest technology for a very competitive price.
The only addition I would have liked to have was the water proofing, otherwise the big fuss about it being a 1080p screen and no wireless charging make no difference to me.

Well I think they could have made it in the style of the 3T, so vertical and in the middle, would have looked great as well. But they said they couldn't because it would make the phone thicker.

Just like I thought. They're slowly increasing their pricepoint but they still offer one of the best value-for-your-money phones out there. I also like their OxygenOS, build quality is fine too. But I just don't like Oneplus as a company anymore. No Nougat support for the OP2 after stating it would get it, cheating benchmark tests (not that I care about those tests, but still, bad practice), overhyping their device. But my biggest 'problem' with them is the fact that they're losing their original vision.
Just like you I don't care about design that much, but it is their most generic phone out there so far. I LOVED the Oneplus One's design, the lifted glass is a beauty to behold, but ever since the Oneplus 2 they went with a more generic design every new iteration they brought to the market. What happened to differentiating theirselves? Offering something unique? It's not about the design being generic now, it's knowing where they started and getting to the design they have now. They're just every other flagship, but cheaper (which is still great ofcourse, but wouldn't you rather pay 100 bucks more with a better camera, longer guaranteed support and better customer service - although they allegedly did step up their game on this aspect?)
Great video as always and I can't wait for the full review!
Pretty funny I asked about the camera in a tweet just a couple of minutes ago and you answered everything I wanted to know about it in this video though. :P

I agree. I own a one plus 3T and I really like it. but I really miss the sandstone finish they had on their design. they're just playing catch up at the minute with the top brands and rather should have created their own image instead.

Danny Winget what's the SOT that you get? I'm kind of confused between honor 8 pro and OnePlus 5. Honor 8 has 4000mah but a 5.7inch 2K display which I think would negate the extra 700 mAh battery. But not sure. I don't understand when a person invest a lot of money of smartphone shouldn't the company provide a larger battery to make it worth for another 2-3 years?!

i was thinking the same thing in all the camera comparisons op5 shines (except that 4k stabilization) i saw supersaf camera test vs iPhone 7 plus with thm mounted at the same cymbal ,its the best comparison you can have, and actually op5 was better in most of the tests almost 80% even in lowlight ,autofocus, front camera dynamic range ,macro etc .the only clear win for the 7 plus was the 4k video .in 1080 op5 has way better video than iPhone with even better stabilization .so saying op5 CAMERA IS JUST OK is strange to me .maybe he can sharpen his skills or dive into testing it more

Great video. I also was hoping they worked more on that screen. I have the OP3 and I can tell the quality of the display is not as good as other screens (even other 1080p phones). For the camera, the hardware seems good, but from what I heard image pris not so great. Hopefully an update would make the camera better. I'm glad you informed us that it's not a huge update from the 3/3T. Now I won't rush to get one.
Regarding the design, I agree it's not important. But this reminds me when I was using the Samsung galaxy S (the very first one, was sold at bell and Virgin as the galaxy S5 Vibrant). My friends back then thought I switched to an iPhone 3GS. I can see similar thing happening with this phone.

Camera is consistently the most important feature. Apps are apps. Phones always slow down, but photo/video quality is about the user's LIFE! That said, I've asked before to talk about the camera launch time. I own both a Samsung and LG. Both are a couple of years old. Samsung older than LG. YET the LG camera takes several seconds to fully boot. I can't tell you how many life's pictures I've missed. The older Samsung camera performs much better. And FYI, the OnePlus 5's missing image stabilizer is a deal killer. You didn't mention it, but it's a significant element to all phone cameras. Please keep up the good work.

I will get the OP5 anyway. Im currently running a S6 Edge and im just so done with charging it 3 times a day. Im downgrading the Display from 1440p to 1080 but hey. like srsly why would i need 1440p? i watch movies at a TV or on my PC. Camera well i still like it tbh. its not on the same level as a s8 or so but more than enough for a normal user so.
    S8 VS OP5
OP5 is 250-300 bucks cheaper (at least here)
    S8 Camera is better
OP5 should theoretically have a better Battery Life
S8 has a bit more Swag if you look at the Design
    OP5 Performance is just Sick
For me its clearly the OP5. the money i save can be used for my next phone.

Hey Matt... Yeah man a good honest look/preview ... The good and the bad...lack of an SD card and no water resistance kind of kills the phone for me but I know for some people that don't matter... also I know the design doesn't particularly matter but just to see some kind of something new if I'm going to spend 500 bucks that's the point... when they make a point of saying never settle as their slogan ....it's real twin in the R11 by Oppo iwhich has the same parent company... Here an interesting fact the 0p5 is made in Oppo factorys...

Hey Matt enjoyed the video. I've been looking to upgrade my phone but don't have a lot to spend so I've been deciding between the oneplus 5 and the Lg G6 as they are cheaper premium phones at a similar price. Living in Australia I haven't been able to find a place even online that is reliable that currently sells it so I'm unsure the price but I can get the G6 for about $650 Australian. If they are about the same price what would be your choice? I feel as if the cameras are fairly equal or at least not significantly different. The main differences between the phones are performance OP5 and screen/design G6. Your thoughts? Thank you in advance

I am watching this on my one plus five and it has also been about 96 hours for me as well. For me, the camera is stellar, I mean in low light, it becomes absolute garbage but with enough light, it is easily one of the best cameras out there. On top of that, my battery life is just swell, I mean I have certainly seen better but with dash charge, it just feels as if it is the best. Aside from design, waterproofing and low-light photography, there is absolutely nothing to complain about.

  • @ap1us

I was on GS7 Edge. Upgraded to OP5. Camera was downgraded, Waterproof obviously a kill. But I am still very happy due to the performance. Battery life is pretty good compared to GS7E. In the end, I am looking at performance rather than camera and waterproof capabilities. So I guess everyone's need is different.

I sold my s8+ and it's great display which gets shipped at 1080 resolution by the way. What is the point having a great display if the phone lags like hell or shuts down apps randomly sorry but I think the s8 is more overrated then the op5 camera on the Samsung is always on beauty mode even if you turn it of so you never really Get a sharp pictures when making a selfi or when I make pictures of my kids so if you ask me the op5 is much better in most aspects then the s8 but this is obviously personal preference.

Software is the #1 reason I love Oneplus phones, and keep buying them. Also love the small things like the notification LED and alert slider. It's the perfect phone for me, even though a little too big for my tastes, but since that's the only negative for me I'll keep using them.

I can compromise the screen resolution on this phone because I prefer to do all my movie watching on my laptop. Same goes to the camera because I would rather shoot photos I want to keep on a DSLR camera. No stereo speakers isn't a problem because we have options for earbuds/phones.
They really gave us good specs on this phone at it's price range, but the miss opportunity was not giving this phone any waterproofing.

I would have to say that i am blown away by the camera on my new op5. I have upgraded from a opo, and my close friends have pixel, s7, s8, and i have to say i find all of the cameras on par with each other. plus you can shoot raw on op5.
i must say though, that the op5 camera layout is annoying in that you have swipe to swap from camera to video.
so far i feel that my new phone is just as good, actually better than the leading brands, mainly because of the oxygen os which is in my opinion the best OS available for a phone. side note, i really hate touch wiz... even when i was a samsung boy.

I think that the OP5 display is not really too bad. When a phone have a higher display, it makes the battery even worse. So, most people wouldn't really care about the display because 1080p is beautiful enough for most people. Even the iPhone 7 Plus which is over $800 is only 1080p and it's selling well.

I agree the hype on the camera on this device was pretty high, but it shouldn't be surprising that the things that cost the most in a phone's BOM are where OP used inferior components - it's probably the only reasonable way to go about hitting a price point under $500 for a device that is otherwise quite well-featured (especially in the headphone audio quality). I also think the target market for the device will probably not care that the camera doesn't shoot the absolute best photos or 4K video either.

Hey Matthew!! Why does 1+ always sell their products for half the rate of other flagships like LG and Samsung ?? What benefits do they get by doing that?? Do they use cheaper quality parts or do they not spend money in R&D??-As always let crispy vids keep coming!!!

Biggest factor is distribution costs. They cut the middle man and sell most of their phones via their webshop. They also don't spend as much on advertising as other companies. Those are the two biggest factors I believe, not sure though.

Great short review Matt. I agree the battery performance has been very inconsistent. some day I get 6 hours of screen on time and some days it fails to even deliver 4 hours of screen time. Screen is not so bad. problem is with the way it looks. Every other phone that comes out of China looks like an IPhone. Camera is not as great as advertised. I would say it's slightly above average.

  • @Feemy
    @Feemy 7 років тому

Oh come on! If you're pixel peeping to distinguish between 2k and 1080p, then you're not using it right. Do you know that it needs less processing power to push that many pixels. Yes, that's one of the reasons the phone is blazingly quick.
But agree with the camera quality. They hyped it a lot and haven't delivered. Maybe software updates will improve it

    • @MatthewMoniz
      @MatthewMoniz  7 років тому

+Faheem Yazdani I'm totally cool with 1080p just don't like they used a pentile matrix. Your eyes can easily see pixelation. All they had to do was switch to LCD or keep amoled but use a diamond matrix
