    She forgot to mention that after the Playboy exposé, nobody would hire Gloria Steinem for like a year because she spent some time as a Bunny.

      ... She was an investigative journalist. It was literally her job to snitch and exploit. And with regards to the bit about over exaggerating the negative aspect, she was a spearhead feminist undercover at the Playboy Club! What did you expect her to say? That she was glad to be seen as little more than eye candy?

      WTF? So she broke a huge story that created actually change within a company and gained national media attention yet she was blacklisted for a time because of the job she had to take to break said story? I would think publications would have been knocking down her door to hire her after that.

If I either belch loudly and a male friend makes fun of me for being unfeminine, _or_ I have one of my super girly moments and a male friend makes fun of me for being so girly, I have no problem with it, and I can't see men being more thin skinned on average than me. Hugh Hefner was a pretty slimy character. He is considered an American icon, and a lot of celebrities went to his parties with the hope of getting laid by the models. You can say that the women "chose" to be in this situation, but Hefner's sliminess was that his business model increasingly pressured women into situations they didn't want to be in without telling them. He closed his "Playboy Clubs" only after more and more sleazy news stories and complaints came out about them. He didn't need to do any of that to make money. That's the problem I have with him. He was never held accountable for his treatment of his female employees.

    I think a lot of people in the comments' section are very much misinformed on what exactly feminism is: the advocation of women's rights on the basis of equality among the sexes. The operative word here being equality. True feminism is not the same thing as "misandry," or the dislike of men. Gloria Steinem isn't a perfect person, but her flaws can't take away from the significant, positive impact she's had on women's rights in the United States.

    I’m guessing a lot of the people groaning that “they willing,y became bunnies, they could have quit at any time” are probably Ayn Rand readers. And also probably never read anything about brainwashing. Subjecting the women to such domineering, and even humiliating terms was a way of making them feel powerless, and hence making them feel unable to quit. Also worth noting that Hefner was a very powerful man across various media in those days, so no surprise that people would be hesitant to blow the whistle and incur the wrath of the Playboy empire when it was at its peak.

      Might be worth mentioning that Ayn Rand, like Machiavelli and other proponents of hyper individualism, died alone. Be like Gloria - choose love, be love. Keep fighting the good fight.

    • @kereneldad2960
      @kereneldad2960 4 роки тому +8

      @@Jacob-mq3mh It is relevant. Any lack of empathy for the women subjected to the playboy ploy - a lack of compassion that would portray them as complicit by choice to work there (and the same argument made by modern men who choose to see the brave women stepping forth in the "me too" movement as somehow at fault) is not only chauvinism - it is tribalism, or hyper individualism - the belief that we are all out for ourselves. This is an invulnerable stance that usually lays far greater punisher on the believer (see my comment, below) as it maintains that life is pretty lonely and competitive. Gloria's fight for others and compassion for the women subjected to this demanding, disgusting endeavor stands head and shoulder above what would be the Randian view of the whole system. I hope that helps. For more, read The Fountainhead, the works of Machiavelli, Nietzsche and Hobbes. Or just choose to go straight to Brene Brown, vulnerability and compassion work, and the joy of being surrounded by others who love and uplift because we get that some systems really do suck and we are all in this together.

I was making $18/hr to making minum wage plus tips (sometimes $10-11/hr on a good day). No stress though. Your health is more important than material things. That's my Input (after finding out why I wanna drink or feel something other than myself), and you can find 100 other different inputs in an AA meeting. Then again there's some bad ones.
