    Oh no, she left out my favorite part. >.< It turns out MLK jr. served in the military and knew the naval chain of command on which Star Trek was based off of. He explained to Nichelle that not only was she the only black person on television at the time that wasn't a servant, she was 3rd in command. If the Captain and Commander had died or been incapacitated, she's the captain of the ship.

      However, it was sometimes the case that Scotty was stuck in engineering preventing the toilets from backing up into the warp drive, so Sulu had the bridge even when Scotty was on board.

    • @TheStarTrekApologist
      @TheStarTrekApologist 6 років тому +79

      The story had to do with how Star Trek was a source of empowerment for black people. They should not ignore how it empowered Ms Goldberg. It also backs up Mr. King's point of how important Uhura was.

      "Hailing frequencies open." Irony was that she was in the pilot "The Lieutenant" which featured future Star Trek guest Gary Lockwood and Don Marshall (Boma from the shuttlecraft episode vs. some giant creature) - Nichelle was a great singer (discovered by Duke Ellington) and planned on doing musicals ..and MLK was like 'You cant leave the show"

    It's worth noting Nichelle Nichols hated Shatner, the kiss was originally supposed to be with Spock not Kirk, and the Mae Jameson's first words upon leaving the atmosphere were "Hailing frequencies open Captain" just like Uhura on the show. She also inspired Whoopi Goldberg to start acting.

      Good notes! Also worth nothing that this video really glosses over, is the rampant racism that Nichelle was facing on a daily basis from both the network and the producers on the show. Gene wanted her there, but the network did everything in their power to reduce her presence, keep as contract, and pay her less than she deserved. When her contract was up, she wasn't just leaving Star Trek because she "wanted to pursue broadway," she was also leaving because it was crushingly unpleasant to work there.

      Also I had no reference to Trek starting out except TNG. The big draws for me were Goldberg who I watched in Color Purple and Comic Relief along with Burton whom at that point I'd only known as the host of Reading Rainbow. What cemented me was the behind the scenes episode they did with TNG on RR. For Nichols, it wasn't until the movies that I had any reference to the TOS crew and had no idea of her impact on the show until much much later.

      S03 E03 of the original series has Kirk get married to (and lose a baby with) a Native American woman, Miramanee, on an all-Native American planet. I'm not sure about the one supposedly in TNG that's mentioned in another reply below here -- maybe they meant "TOS." Miramanee seems like the only woman Kirk ever really loves in the original series. I don't think they actually hired a Native actress, though, which is a shame.

    Note: While the video is having a little fun poking fun at things, This is more or less how the story goes. But there are interviews with Nichelle Nichols and written accounts in books about Trek, saying how things really happened. Gene wasn't perfect, but he was forward-thinking enough to include a black woman on the bridge with an Asian man, a Russian, a Southern white man, and so on. Ms. Nichols really did think about quitting, really did hear from Dr. King, who urged her to stay for those reasons, and she really did stay for the 2nd and 3rd seasons, to play a black woman officer on a starship bridge, sometimes doing much more than just opening those dang hailing frequencies. That she could be a beautiful woman and be an officer, that she could be black and serving as an equal alongside the white folks and others, was indeed a big deal. So was that first interracial kiss. Star Trek was diverse and equal-rights long before that was popular on TV or in real life. And without Star Trek doing it, who knows when we would've gotten that. It inspired and taught a whole generation or more, of black and brown and Asian and white kids, who grew up a little more OK with themselves and people who looked and sounded a little different. -- Nichelle Nichols rocks. So did Gene and the others, and they still do, those who are still around. We're lucky we've got 'em. No, they're not perfect, but they are pretty good or great.

    • @hhale
      @hhale 5 років тому +4

      As much as people like to gossip about what a dick Bill Shatner was, the reality is that he's the reason there was an interracial kiss on Star Trek. Listen to the story as told by Nichols ua-cam.com/video/3hKKkGhEDoU/v-deo.html

      She stayed on the show to do her part for civil rights, which she even admitted multiple times to being angry about in a “why me?” way. I still think her sacrifice is admirable.

    Absolutely unforgettable in Star Trek.
    I grew up admiring and having a crush on her - being young I had not learnt to be afraid of people whose skin colour was different to mine - and thanks in part to Lt. Uhura - I never have.
    Sail the stars and explore the unkown dimensions of the Universe you beautiful, elegant lady.
    Rest in peace Nichelle.

  • @MarySanchez-qk3hp

    Everything she said here, is true. Including Shatner crossing his eyes so they'd have to use a real kiss clip! And Ms. Nichols knew (as do I because I am still one...) that we are called TREKKERS, not Trekkies. I'd sit in front of the TV with a big mic and my reel to reel, recording every single first-aired episode. I've got it all memorized. She was such a great Lady. I'll miss her. I had no idea that she lived so close in
    Silver City, NM! The only stain is the two men bickering over her conservancy later in her life. She changed my world. I'm not one of the fanatics who puts on ears and a costume, or goes to comicons. I just loved the show, and still love the reruns that Comet TV airs. They say she walked into Roddenberry's office one day and said with a smile and suspicion: "I know what you're doing... you're making little morality plays!" And it's true. Rest In Peace, Ms. Nichols. You did so much with your life. You're a grand, classy lady and a wonderful actor.

    Wow I just found this and I am a big drunk history fan. I knew most of this, not the Shantner part.
    I had the honor and wonderful experience of meeting Nichelle at the first Star trek convention in New York at the Sheraton hotel my mom took me ,the whole cast was there. I remember George Tikia belting out a country western song with this amazing deep voice , Defrost Kelly also sang ,Leonard Nimoy telling us how he came up with the Vulcan hand greeting . They all shared wonderful stories and Bill and Nichelle spoke about "the kiss* and did a mock redo of it. Towards the end we got to meet and mingle, Mr.shatner did not participate.
    Nichelle and the others did.
    When I tell you she is the most beautiful stunning woman in person and so kind. I was standing in front of my hero and had trouble getting my mouth to work. She smiled at me said thank you for coming and hugged me 🤯
    We chatted a for a short time and she was very encouraging. I met the other cast members except Bill. I was a teenager when I met her and I can still feel her hug , it was genuine. One of my best memories ever.
    Nichelle Nichols is a National and World treasure .
