      Thanks! I try to give honest, unbiased and practical reviews. Then the viewer can make an informed decision. What I think is bad, someone else might think it is not relevant to them, or viceversa, but it’s always best to know before committing. My alarms always go off when I watch a review and they don’t mention a single shortcoming. Anyhow. Thanks for the comment and hopefully you subscribe so you watch my reviews as they are published and/or even suggest some that you might like to watch.

    Finally! Someone who also points out the issue with face tracking putting you in the center of the frame. All brands seem to do this. Why don't they allow positioning on the 1/3rd grid line? Question- does the AI tracking headroom adjustment/calibration allow the same calibration for vertical (portrait) mode?

    • @SamuelSotiega
      @SamuelSotiega  Рік тому

      I also ask myself that question, given the fact they provide a gimbal for people to film with, it should be something quite obvious. Go figure…

    I just picked this up as my first gimbal. Love the size and smoothness, but was kinda bummed about the shallow tilt angle. I'm wondering if it's really so important for my use tho. I plan to mostly get nature shots and review small products like flash lights.
    The tracking is very neat, but I'm not sure if I'll be on camera much myself. 🤔
    Love the videos and advice. Hope to make better smartphone content soon, thanks!

    Great review, you sold me on the Hohem iSteady V2 AI Tracking Gimbal. Hands down the best value for the beginner. Would love to see a follow-up review using a iPhone 12 Pro, a Saramonic Professional Mini Plug Play Microphone for iPhone iOS, PLUS the Hohem 3-in-1 Extension Tripod Accessory with remote control for the iSteady V2. Items I like to see explored would be comparing iPhone 12 Pro mic with the external mic, handling with the added weight of external mic, possible work-arounds for rising and lowering of video angle shots, AI tracking performance, etc. If this set-up has good performances in such areas, then this setup would a great way to start in vlogging, video film making, etc., with creative imagination of use and subject manner. Thanks again for all your great reviews and tutorials.

      You have then the same combo that I have. G6 max for most of my gimbal use, the hohem for solo filming using the AI, and for the rare occasion I might be out and about and can’t be bothered with the larger G6 max. Trust me, the AI sensor is amazing, I use it a lot and it is so, so helpful and also reliable!! Not perfect but you learn to work with it (specially if there are a lot of faces or heads, as the AI struggles to stay on you if another head or face gets between you and the sensor) but if you know what the limitations are, it is super helpful. Greatly appreciate your reviews, with emphasis on content, creativity and workflow. Wish you would devote a bit more time to cinematic quality & composition, and Android functionality. For example, I have a Poco X3 that has movie frame and pro modes...so I've enjoyed your Pocket 2 reviews and considered that purchase (for tracking) until seeing this AI tracking review... Like you, I use the rear cameras. Seems like you prefer this gimbal & your smartphone over the Pocket 2? Am also a new subscriber due to your emphasis on real-world practicality. Thanks!

    • @SamuelSotiega
      @SamuelSotiega  2 роки тому

      Well, I love the pocket 2 and for anything that requires movement, walking, running, on the spot inspiration, it’s hard to beat. I am currently making a review of the new 13 pro max with its cinematic mode (i bet you will like it as I talk a lot about cinematography) and I have to say, for filming yourself, where you want to introduce movement over static shots, the iSteadyv2 is brilliant and combined with the 13 pro max makes it even better for talking heads as with the cinematic mode and f11-f12, it looks really nice. You’ll see in my review, out next week. Essentially, no one camera/setup is best for everything. But I love the pocket 2, I think it is hard to beat. There are a lot of new cool stuff out there (AI tracking, cinematic more, computational photography, I am curious as to what will DJI will do with the pocket 3 when that comes out, I guess in a year or two, to compete..but the AI sensor in this gimbal and what offers for solo filming, is truly sensational. I use it now in every video I make in one way or another. I was filming yesterday in Trafalgar Square in London for this iPhone 13 review and I had it on a tripod filming me, filming what I was doing. Great “crew member”! And it doesn’t complain when I move it here and there until I find the right angle!! 😂😂

      Just a thought popped in my mind as i went through your comment. When you say cinematic quality and composition, do you mean my videos, or the products that I review? I always take everyone’s comments seriously as the more constructive feedback I get the better videos I can make…

    • @teddy6735

      @@SamuelSotiega "Cinematic quality"..... It seems like everyone these days has a few videos out there that they consider "cinematic" but which are MTV type of fast frame 1000 action shots from different angles pasted together in odd framing for 30 seconds with their favorite music that they think tells a "story..." Fifty years ago sitcoms showed the angst of neighbors coming over and watching dad's family reel videos. How technology has improved things, eh...? You allude to this in your criticism of the Pocket 2 and its tracking capability as a "piece of --" because it centers everything in the frame. Correctly so... And then you praise the V2 because it allows you to use the rule of thirds with headroom. Correctly so. I've seen many gimbal reviews that praise a product, but when you look closely the footage is filled with very subtle microjitters... Not cinematic... Do they know how to walk with a gimbal? You covered the feature of the V2 where you can set the speed of the gimbal to "slow" to get a more "cinematic" effect. Correctly so... There are times when you want the jitters, such as to create fear and suspense in the audience, as you know...but most people don't know this...and UA-cam is showered with this "stuff" -- as you pointed out indirectly in your review of the OM5 and its appeal to the "selfie crowd" (which I found quite amusing.) Not everyone can go out and pony up $1500+ for a new iPhone 13 Max and the additional items the camera will require, or has the newest Mac Pro or Ryzen CPU and several terabytes of storage to process the gigantic files it puts out... There are more people who want to know how to "make their videos rock" and want to know how the latest piece of equipment might do that...and compositional tips help them do that. For example, I wholeheartedly agree with you that using the V2 will be like giving me an extra "crew member" who "doesn't complain" (but I just bought the Smooth-Q3 Combo -- guess the unopened box is going back to Best Buy?)....but you still need those ND filters on the smartphone (advantage Pocket 2)...and those guide lines to frame a shot...and have a story to tell... I think that a balanced approach for demoing a product is to appeal to two audiences (or three): 1) the UA-cam and vlogger crowd, showing them how the product improves or hinders them from "telling their story;") and 2) the "serious" crowd -- who want their footage to look like it has some semblance of professional quality. You can approach both camps (or split into 3) from the compositional viewpoint of "telling a story." I've already seen competitor's videos comparing the Pocket 2 to the iPhone 13, and commented that the Pocket 2 is a better buy -- since you don't lose the sharpness at the edges and get similar color depth....the iPhone 14 is rumored to be the one to buy....or will it be Pocket 3? The tools just keep getting better. Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated. Off to Best Buy...or should I...? Let me ask you a question and you'll understand my point: which is the better gimbal for cinematic shooting? I mentioned that I'm already shooting in letterbox (119 degrees)....and trying to truly tell a story... I get that the V2 is great for vloggers (as it helped you in the square)....and it can track if I am in the story and not behind the camera....but does it have the range of angles for leading, dramatic shots...? Will either interfere with the wide angles I am shooting? Thanks

That sounds like a good and requested video. For smartphones in particular, I created a 2 part video on how and what to do to get the best results and cinematic footage. • @SamuelSotiega
      @SamuelSotiega  2 роки тому +1

      If you have use for the AI sensor, u’ll love it. I use it all the time, put it on a tripod, mount the phone so the rear lens is facing me and use the AI sensor to do solo filming when I got nobody to help me. In regards to mounting a wireless mic, the only way to fit it in is using the 1/4” thread at the base of the gimbal, but the cable might throw off the balance as the gimbal pans or tilts. I would recommend when using a gimbal to record the audio separately, away from the gimbal itself, like on a small zoom H1N or similar that you can keep in your pocket. That way you don’t risk the things going out of whack. That’s how I do it and it works great and syncing audio in post nowadays is super easy.

    So, I got got this gimbal and have now used it for a few hours. I have the OM4, but got it for the AI sensor,, as I film mostly alone.
    Here is what I found.
    1. It's stabilization is very good, better than the DJI OM4.
    2. The AI sensor works very well. I was able to do some walking past shots and it kept up nicely.
    3. The controls work as expected. I do wish I could change the different gimbal modes (pan, pan-tilt, all etc.) without having to use the app. You can switch between photo / video with buttons, which is nice.
    4. The app has good control of the motors. Slowing down the gimbal really smooths things.
    5. I can't tell how much charge the gimbal has without turning it on. Also, despite charging for 2+ hours, I don't get 3 dots, showing it is fully charged. Despite that, it does have good battery life. Used it for 3 hours yesterday with a big camera -Samsung Note 20 Ultra and had no issues. I did not use the AI sensor during that time, so not sure how much that would have impacted things.
    6. While charging there is no indication it is being charged and no indication that it is fully charged.
    Overall, I love it. My only real issue is that I can't figure out the charging. I have read the instructions and saw nothing about charging that helps. I am wondering if I am missing something.
    Again, this is a great video that helped me alot.

      Glad you found the video helpful. If you press and hold the bottom left bottom and press once the button on the right, you go to pan-tilt follow mode, twice pan-follow, three times goes into lock-mode, four times and goes into POV. You can search amazon for "DSLR fluid head tripod" and see the results. It all depends on what size you are comfortable with. This one seems ok amzn.to/3KchW53 but again, that is my view, you have probably totally different requirements and needs. A tripod is a very personal thing. I use DSLR tripods when I do my youtube videos, but use heavier video tripods when doing client work, because they are way more stable (although heavier). The the hohem is tiny and fit in your pocket, he smooth 5 doesn’t. It depends on your needs and requirements. Do you use heavy payloads? @@PlimbaUrsul Would you say that a lapel mic that you can attach to yourself might be better than a mini shotgun mic? If this is for capturing mostly your own voice, then I strongly recommend a wireless mic. Something small but with a light receiver easy to mount on the phone or the gimbal, like this one. amzn.to/3oAz0sS. If you need something different that allows you to record sound, both stereo (atmos) and also an input so you can connect the lapel mic to it, I recommend a zoom H1N recorder with a lapel mic. This link gives you all amzn.to/3Jw44T1. This is not wireless, you would need to connect the lapel to the h1n and then press record every time you start recording on camera. But you gain the fact it has a pair of good XY stereo mics, so you can record the outdoors and atmos. I personally use this option over wireless because mounting accessories to a gimbal tends to make things more complex. But that is just me and my workflow. Syncing audio in your edit software these days si super easy, it's all done almost automatically by the program itself so that is not a worry. Was this helpful, Daniel? Hi! I follow your videos on UA-cam and wanted to reach out through here hoping it was easier to reach you. I’m an aspiring travel vlogger looking to buy some new video equipment for my next trip. I am new to film and will be learning as I go. I currently have an iPhone XS which I will be using and a go pro 4 (I know both are outdated). I want to buy a handheld gimbal stabilizer and am not sure whether to buy the Hohem isteady v2 or the dji pocket 2. I also don’t want to bring my MacBook with me to edit video since I will be traveling for months on end with o my a carry on bag and personal backpack. So I am thinking about buy an iPad Air 4th gen to edit videos. I need for my equipment to be compact. Do you think I can manage with the devices I proposed? Are there other devices I should look into? Also, can I decently edit videos on a tablet?

    • @SamuelSotiega
      @SamuelSotiega  2 роки тому

      The hohem isteadyV2 is great if you plan to use the AI sensor for solo filming. I use it all the time in my videos, it works awesome, but that is the only use I have for the hohem's gimbal. If you want a gimbal that works as a gimbal, consider either the zhiyun smooth 5 or the feiyutech g6 max. I have videos for either one of them. Trust me, you get what you pay for, especially in tech. The pocket 2 is amazing, I also use it all the time. You could literally use a smartphone holder mount, attach the phone to the pocket 2 and have a large screen for any gimbal shots, and then easily switch to the phone if doing anything static, if you choose to do tripod shots. As a matter of fact my next video is "is the pocket 2 still relevant in 2022?" and it is published sometime next week, Wednesday or Thursday so that might be interesting to you. You have a decent phone and a decent gopro. You gotta use whta you got and that is the right attitude. It all depends on your budget and long/short term view. The pocket 2 will set you back, with the creator's combo and a set of ND's, somewhere around the $800 mark, which is a fair amount of money. I would suggest you get a "cheapish" gimbal, like the zhiyun smooth 5 or G6 Max, which will be around $200+, use it with your phone and then decide whether such configuration works for you or you need something more compact. If you have the budget, the pocket 2 is brilliant because it can be as discreet as you need it to be, or attach a screen and be a little less discreet. In terms of editing, I would strongly suggest an M1 MacBook Air over a tablet, for editing purposes. I use the M1 Air all the time, super lightweight. Watch this video ua-cam.com/video/vp_6V5bLXHc/v-deo.html from Mattie Happoja about using an iPad for editing. You might find it enlightening, Ultimately it comes down to your budget, really. Have you considered renting a pocket 2 locally to where you live, take it for a spin and see how it feels, before considering buying? that's what I would do!!

      I take your point and you can clearly see that this gimbal and what I demonstrated works with whatever phone you mount. You can't just hold against people if they choose to use an iPhone over another phone. For every person who prises Apple and their ecosystem, there is another one who rants about it. For me (and I guess for many) the functionality, speed and reliability that I get from apple products is something I know I can't get with Android, Windows, whatever. I can literally shoot in the forest, and set up my iPhone so I can upload the footage to my MacBook while I am travelling back home to be ready when I get to my editing desk. All done in 2 clicks. Airdrop is amazing, so many other examples of seamless integration between apple products to make my life and workflow easier and simpler. But what works for me does not necessarily work for the person next to me. You should ask yourself, why is it that content creators prefer phones over other phones? There must be a reason, don't you think?
