    Well done! Making a correct guitar nut is a vitally important aspect of building and repairing. It's really an art, and many luthiers just don't understand.

    I started playing guitar in 1974. So gold top deluxe hasa special place in my heart. I wish I'd bought a player grade one back when people didn't value them as much as now.

      I also think that some of the pricing on older instruments are vrazy outrageous.. i thought spending $2000 on a bass was very pricey but I couldn't imagine spending anything over that.
      Believe me I'd love to own a 59 Les Paul but I'll never see that haha

    A work of art. Brilliant. That material looks really good to work with. Each time I see a LP I regret getting shut of my one. I part exchanged it for a Martin 000-28 EC. Which is a great guitar.

    Nothing can go wrong with an old vintage Gibson Les Paul, I love the ones from the 70´s, well, nothing can go wrong with any Gibson Les Paul but I do love the older ones more than new ones, even beaten up 80´s Gibson Les Paul´s have a history to tell :D thanks for the video.

    I play some 60's guitars with a zero fret. I've re-fretted these guitars and noticed that the action I get at the 1st fret is reliably better than my guitars with a normal nut. Therefore when I cut a new nut, I measure the fret height as a guide for cutting the nut. It has to be slightly higher to allow for wear, (as with the zero fret), but I find that I can reliably get a good action because I can use a metal gauge at the nut to prevent me cutting too low.

Yes especially old traditional German brands use to install zero Frets which is also a time saver in industrial guitar production because the nut has just the function to guid the strings in the correct spacing.     I have a 1974 Gold Top in similar condition, discoloured gold and very soft, flaking lacquer.
    Probably painted by the same person on a Friday afternoon.

    Hands and brain, Magic ! thank U ! Just a question Nik : why don't you clean the fretboard with, for exemple, alcohol, and oiling with, for exemple, citrus oil, it's more easy without cords in the middle !

    Hello my friend,looking at the gold top it seems as if it was exposed to direct heat or sunlight but the rest seems like humidity damage either way another great video

      @@jsp42o Ah o.k. got it...The size of the drill bit depends on the hight of the frets. I always use one that is slightly higher than the frets. Hope this will help you out. Best Regards Nik

    Are those humbuckers skinnier than modern ones or is it just a trick of the camera. They look 1/2 as wide as the ones on my ‘94:Les Paul.

    That’s a gold sparkle! Gibson made them in Red, Blue and Gold I believe the gold is the rarest of them . Tell
    Me I’m not seeing things, I can swear I seen sparkle in the finish

    Take out the mini humbuckwra and put P90s in. Plug into a 50 watt Fender Bassman with a couple Greenback Marshall Cabs and you will have the BEST sounding rig on the planet!

    That finish looks Polyester? My '72 De Luxe Gold Top is Nitro. In the process of making a new fingerboard for mine, the rest of the guitar is in much better condition than that one, must've had an interesting life.

    This looks like it was in back shape and someone sanded it to a point and oversprayed a thin coat of gold metallic and over the years the overspray faded and showed the sanded layers below.

    Original pots and switches don't mean better. If it isn't working you need to replace them, they are wear parts.

    Too bad whoever changed the nut in the past didn't properly scribe around it to save the laquer on the sides of the neck. Instead they chipped it out!!
