- How to Protect Floors During Construction
Finished floors are a building component that must be protected throughout a renovation project.
Whether you are finishing or refinishing hardwoods, or just protecting existing hardwoods it's important to use the right products. The same is true for tile floors or any other type of finished flooring.
Construction Paper works great for protecting floors when moving appliances and of course, it also provides protection for floors during construction, renovation, or remodeling.
In this video, Renos covers 4 different paper-based floor covering options that you can use to protect floors during construction. We discuss Ram Board, X-Board, Builder's Paper, and Rosin Paper.

Very well-organized presentation; good, detailed review of the qualities and best uses of each of the reviewed products. Thank you!
Reno, thank you for the review of each material weight, strength and purposes for use.. VERY VERY HELPFUL!
This video was VERY informative and USEFUL to me!!! Thanks so much! I really had know idea of exactly how they are to be used other than just laying it on the floor. You did an OUTSTANDING job of explaining this to a newbie. Thanks again!
Thanks so much for this!! I was so worried about the contractors ruining my floors...until now!
This is exactly the type of information that I needed.
Thank you!
Hi Kendall, I enjoyed your video a lot. Very informative and detailed , but not excessively long. I'm getting ready to remove some drywall, improve some insulation and redo the drywall. Your video was just what I needed. Thank You, George in Idaho.
Great video! We will need to do this for the first time for new construction, so this video was extremely helpful! Thanks!
Thanks, great information and tips. I was about to tape the paper to my floor 😱
Yep!! That was definitely a helpful tip!
Great video you have done and interesting, I always use ram board that’s my choice for my floors when doing a project…
Simple, info packed, to the point video!
Thank you for straight to point and materials needed 🎉
Thank you so much. I learnt and got all info. I have a week reno in my condo. You are awesome.
Thank you! I'm so glad that you found the information helpful. Good luck with your project.
Fantastic video thanks. Extremely well done and informative covering all the main paper flooring protection product options. Exactly what I was looking for!
So glad that you found the video helpful. Thank you for the positive feedback!
Thank you! I needed rosin paper but I never heard of it. Great video!!
Thanks so much for providing such detailed information.
Good presentation, looking forward to learning more, renovating an apartment.
Thank you so much for this detailed explanation for the use of these products.
This was EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you. I've subscribed.
Thanks for this video bud. It helped me to narrow down on what I needed for my application.
Enjoyed this video and the information regarding floor protection products. I have used Ram Board on a current home renovation, having seen it for myself used by another contractor. While I like the sturdiness and thickness of the board, the one or two things I think that may hinder folks to use it is the difficulty using it, especially cutting and laying the product down on the floor. It is stiff, as it is advertised, but also not easy to lay flat. It is expensive than most other products of similar quality, e.g X-board is cheaper, as noted in this video. An alternative you might consider is ordinary roofing underlayment or roofing felt. It has about the same thickness as X-board, is water proof, and cuts and lays much easier than Ram Board. At 36" x 144' a foll of roofing felt at Lowes is 16.86, far more affordable than either X-board or Ram Board. Something to consider for your next project.
I agree that the Ram Board is not as easy to cut as lighter weight materials. I use tin snips cut through it with no problem. It does take some time for the Ram Board to settle down once its laid down. Ive never tried roofing felt as floor covering. Its certainly strong enough. And it is commonly used as underlayment for hardwood floor installation. My concern would be whether the color from the roofing felt would easily transfer or bleed onto other surfaces and tracking. White cabinets, light color carpets, etc. Thank you for sharing another option to consider.
Is it OK to leave the roof felt on top of wood floors for a project that will last 1 month?
@RENOS4PROSJOES why would the roof felt bleed. Usually it's a water repellent material? You don't think it will be good to cover wood floors during construction?
Great Video
great video very helpful.
thorough video.... great job !! thanks
Thanks. Very informative. Subbed.
Awesome video, thank you for the tips! I'm liking the ramboard
The Ramboard is the thickest, and also the most expensive product featured in this video.
Thank you!
Yo! You nailed this bruh 👌🏾 thank you for this 🙏🏾
Great video! You saved me from making a huge mistake that would've been time consuming to fix. I almost bought builder's paper thinking it was the same as RAM board smh. Everything is bought online now thanks to covid so I couldn't check it out in stores. I'm so happy I came across your video, keep being great!
Glad I could help! Thank you.
Yep. Same for me.
Excellent video
Excellent info - thanks!
You're welcome! Thank you for leaving a comment.
many videos show how to put down tapes and adhesives, but how to remove from concret floors without manual scrappers?
Great job! What tape are you using? The blue tape isn’t sticking. Is that plain masking tape? Thanks 👍
Tradies totally wrecked my floor when they did my renovation.
Pp corrugated sheet is best
Why cant red rosin be used be more than 1 day?
What is a runner ???
A REALLY well done video thanks for it. Having said that, I have to say it's sad to see how much waste gets generated in the renovation industry, and that includes the yards of floor protectants as demonstrated here. I wish there was another way.
Will the ram board protect hardwood floor while rolling a baker style scaffold across it?
The ram board should not have a problem protecting against the wheels of the scaffold. The main point of concern for me would be to make 1000 percent sure that the floors are completely clean and that nothing gets under the ram board when you install it. Make sure that the perimeter of the board is completely sealed to the floor. Trash that gets under the board can really damage the floors because you can't see it and don't realize that you are walking on it or rolling over it.
Will paint bleed through the red rosin paper? Just wondering if something else needs to be placed underneath this paper?
There are different thicknesses of red rosin paper. The one featured in this video will not provide sufficient protection as a paint drop cloth. I would use a standard canvas drop cloth for paint projects. Cheers!
Hi what can I use to protect tiles during wedding party at home
That is a very broad question. But they make rubberized floor protection products that function similar to the paper products. If you are concerned with people cracking or chipping tile while dancing on the floors, I don't have an answer for that one. Maybe a "no shoe" zone.
Great video! Im moving into my new house this week and I have movers helping me. Would it be ok to lay the Ram board down just 4 days after the floors were finished? Not taping the floors like you said?
Prepandemic $35 plus post pandemic $65plus
Ramboard 😮
I saw advice to put paper down, then a rigid product over it, for heavy traffic appliance zones. What about that strategy? And using a hardier board instead of ramboard?
That strategy also works. One of the biggest concerns for covering floors with any technique is to making sure that nothing gets under the floor covering and damages the floor without you knowing.
@@RENOS4PROSJOES ah yes, thanks
Would Builder Paper work well to protect floor tile in a bathroom?
California this ram board is $99-50
It does cost.
