One tip I’ve heard is if your using a removal company don’t write the contents of a box on it. Write a number an the box and then write a list with each number and what’s in that box somewhere else. This minimises the risk of someone stealing a box if they think it contains something valuable. Of course most employees will be very trust worthy but you can never be too careful
We use duct tape strips on the boxes. One color for each room. When you get to the new house put a strip on the coriespondin room door so all can help unload and use tape strips to put in those rooms.
A moving tip: Put a set of bedding for each bed together & set up the beds first when you arrive at the new house. That night when you are too exhausted you can fall straight into bed as they were the first thing set up.
I have a futon I just lay on the floor, super portable, but will definitely remember this for my dad's bed. We have a cot for emergencies, but I'd rather not use it if we don't have to(he's getting older and it's hard on him to sleep on)
I also recommend a 1st to Open kitchen box, which for us means tea kettle, French Press, coffee grinder, coffee beans, tea bags, cocoa packets, a small Tupperware of sugar, and dry creamer (just in case). And 4 cups/mugs. Because no one in our group wants to start the day without our own coffee, etc.
I'm not done watching the video so this might be mentioned but here's my tip: Take a picture of the back of your TV so that when you arrive you can put the cords in easily
My tip would be to film a tour of your old house with everything in its place before you start packing up. I did this before I moved out of my very first apartment and it’s so nice to look back on, to remind you of a home you loved 🙂❤️ good luck with the move Emily, sooo excited for you! X
Yesss! That’s so crazy because I literally just did that today, and this is probably my 30+ move in my life but I’ve never done that before and always regretted. So for this live, it was the first thing on my list of things to do before anything else. Now that it’s done, I feel like I can really dive into the huge project of moving, while feeling a sense of freedom and completion because I‘ve captured and honored the place that I’m now leaving. It’s so funny you mentioned this and I came across it today!
1:09 Free moving boxes 1:32 Cut slits into the box for handles 2:10 Declutter first before moving 2:21 Vacuum Pack Bag 3:52 Pack bathroom Hygiene Essentials separately 4:37 pack same thing for kitchen 5:34 pack frames 🖼 horizontal, side by side not on top of each other 5:54 fill in the spaces with fluff- -If it don’t shake it don’t break 6:07 6:30 fold over tape end before putting it on the box 7:05 weighing 7:12 packing books- suitcase 7:31 packing knives 7:47 packing glassware 8:24 label boxes 8:38 color code boxes 9:10 take a photo of arrangements to recreate at new place 9:23 save screws and coordinate to item 9:58 for big items- tape newspaper to bottoms
5:34 The box is flat and horizontal, the wrapped frames are actually shown as being placed vertically. Some padding in between frames, especially those that may jut out a bit, would help avoid breaking during any impact.
I’ve moved a lot. Another thing I’ve always done is pack stuff you don’t need ahead of time and the essentials last. That way you don’t have a mad panic on the day. The party plate idea is genius! Will definitely be using that in the future!
I used to have SO MANY books. And I moved 4 or 5 times with them. To prevent heavy book boxes, I packed a few books in almost every single box, with other things. So I never had a crazy heavy box of books. And we've done the color coding with tape. SUPER helpful.
Hmmm, I may have to try this. I’ve had movers comment before about how many books I have 😂 I did pare down since then, but I’m getting ready to move and I’m pretty sure the count has crept back up again.
I have moved 8 times in the past 10 years and I learned some of these the hard way. I really didn’t think of cutting handles into boxes that’s something I didn’t know. I’m amazed with the content and I’m sure this video will help so many.
yeah, making holes in moving boxes so the bugs and other critters can get in them while they are either in a garage or storage waiting to be shipped to their new home. LOL....DO NOT leave open holes in moving boxes. The entire point of taping up the box to start with. If you you need handles on a box, its too heavy or too bulky for you. Pack smarter, not harder.
One more tip: if you have any broken cardboard boxes or any smaller ones you don’t want to use, break them and put them next to the walls of bigger cardboard boxes you are using, for extra padding and cushion specially when packing glass ware or decor items 💖
When labelling your boxes make sure to write any important info on the top and the sides of the box! You want to be able to read it if boxes get stacked on top of each other.
The black sack vacuum hack! Genius and unless I saw it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it.haha. Total game changer ! Thanks Emily some brilliant tips there. I used duvet sets and sheets to wrap up a lot breakables and saved in the bubble wrap. Good luck moving. Xx
I love this idea, but my suggestion is use any other color than black. That way, movers or people who are helping with your move don't mistake them with trash ! 😢😢
I’m very sentimental and I have learned that the “everyday” things are what make up “the good ol’ days”. Each home I have lived in is a season of my life. While I do end up with many pictures within the home, one of the best things I’ve learned to do is take pictures of each room without anyone in it, same as if you’re taking a picture of a loved one. I wish I had always done this, it’s like a visual time capsule. Then you can start de cluttering and packing, etc. One day your children will be grown and moved out, and these pictures will make nice momentos.
Hack 2: plastic grocery bags work super well to wrap breakable items. Even the plastic grocery bags you ripped open can be used to wrap breakable. It seems a little thin at first but you'll realize as you wrap items and place them in boxes together that the plastic wrapped around everything makes really thick protective puffy barriers that compliment each other and everything is padded and safe!
Great hacks. Banana boxes from supermarkets are a lifesaver. The have the built in handles, keep the thick paper so nothing falls through the holes, as long as you don’t pack them with too much heavy stuff like books, they are easy to carry. They also stack, winner winner. !!
Getting ready to move into my first owned home and found that the vacuum trash bags was bloody brilliant! I don’t have money to spare at the moment buying moving supplies due to the closing costs of the home but this was very helpful!
I also write the box’s contents on one side. Example: “Kitchen- plates & bowls” That way, I don’t have to dig through every kitchen box to find the one thing I’m looking for!
I am not usually one to comment but I have to let you know .. its been 2 years I have been watching your videos. You are an inspiration for me. Whenever I watch your videos I personally feel that I am calmer and personally developing my inner self with your videos. I am thankful for your videos. You are my go to when I am in down time or even happy time. I love how happy it makes me watching you and your kids as well. I am a new mom with 2 years old and one more on way and your videos has been a lot help. I wish you and your family well wish and love. ❤❤❤❤❤
Liked your video, helpful! Thank you. Just wanted to add my family owns supermarkets I wouldn't use boxes from markets bc they could contain roach eggs or mouse poop.
I just moved with a 3 year old and a 6 month old. It’s just like you say about travelling with kids for holiday: “The thought of it is worse than the reality” 💕
Fabulous tips! I especially liked the tip about getting boxes from the supermarket - I was quoted $130 for boxes. After watching your video I called my local supermarket and was invited to collect as many as I wanted for FREE! I also loved the tip about cutting handles in them and covering furniture feet in newspaper. We will be moving into a home with new hardwood floors so this tip is a saviour! Thank you 💓
Never clicked on a video so fast!! I’m moving in 4 weeks and had already looked back at your videos to see if you had any tips on moving! I’m coming back to this in half an hour after my daughter’s in bed with a cup of tea! Saving me once again! 💗
Love this video!! My favorite hack is the essential bag idea!! So smart for after a long day of moving, avoiding rummaging through packed boxes to find your toothbrush!
Love the handles on boxes, never thought of that, I fold my tape over when I cut it so when I put it away, I don't have to go crazy looking for the end!!! I love all your hacks Emily, you could write a book of them all. Cheers Diana NZ :)
I love these tips and everyone's tips below. I have used many of these before and found them helpful. To offer an iota of idea: I dust picture frames and furniture before packing it. I don't like moving with "old house grime." I use drawers for packing clothes. And laundry baskets for bedding or clothes.
For knives, insert them into cardboard for an easy non-slip sleeve! For books, I've found donated boxes from liquor stores to be the perfect size without them getting too heavy or cumbersome.
My family's been moving around renting houses for years since I was born (I'm 22 now) because my mom likes to think of it as an adventure and being able to live in a new kind of surrounding. Some of these hacks I am familiar like using a bin bag which we've also been using for our clothes because we don't really have suitcases and I think it's clever to suck the air using a vacuum that can give us more space in our car that we usually use since we only rent trucks for our big furnitures like beds, sofa, and our dining table. I would definitely use these on our next move or maybe when I get to move abroad. Thank you.
I love all of the tips. This is by far the best moving hack video out there for sure. I've seen a bunch of them and all of them shows pretty predictable things. This one had quite a few genius hacks!! Well done!
So timely! We are about to move (also awaiting our completion/exchange dates) - definitely decluttering!! The last time I moved I still had unopened boxes for over a year! When I finally came to do them, most items ended up at the charity shop anyway! Hopefully I've learnt my lesson this time round!
We recently moved (a day before lockdown! 😬) And I did a few similar hacks, the bathroom essentials, using pots and pans to store herbs and spices and I work in an office with lots of boxes, so I was allowed to take loads! We also passed on those boxes to other people who needed them for moving. Also make sure you know there will be an open Chinese or Indian take away nearby, so you can plan to not need to cook on moving day. You’ll need that at the end of moving 🤣
I will say i didn't care for vacuum seeling. Everytime i pulled something out, i had to rewash it because it was SO wrinkled. I loved using the bags over the clothes, especially if you have people helping because your clothes just get thrown everywhere and at least in the bags they are protected
V good im a serial mover, 2 more tips, put elastic bands around a load of clothes on hangers so its easier to take out of wardrobe and lay rugs on floor and roll whole lot together and put packing tape around!
It’s worth asking your removal company whether they expect you to empty drawers (especially clothes). We were amazed that our removal company literally picked up and moved our chest of drawer/wardrobe which meant we didn’t have to pack our clothes. Worth asking :) all the best for the move. I love your videos xx
I just did the same thing and they said yes. Mine is a local move but nonetheless a tough one as I'm 60, not in great health and live alone. I already did the black bags on hanging clothes, BUT (dummy me) did them upside down! I still have some clothes on hangers that I want to have when I 1st get there. I'll but the bags on right side up now. PS Wonderful video!!
@@SissyD61, if you haven't changed out the bags already, just take another bag and tie it onto the bottom of the bag making a completely enclosed garment bag out of the two tied together. I feel your pain and then some. I'm 60 and in a wheelchair, so can't really do much but "directing". I know I'll be loved the day of the move. (Sarcasm inserted)
That's so wonderful, and such a blessing!😊.. When I move; I now just take out the drawers and move the empty dresser, then replace the drawers once on the moving space.. Then do the opposite to remove from moving space (truck/van/trailer) into new area.. If I don't have time to pre-organize the drawers I just cover the top space with, (towel/t-shirt/sheet/throw blanket).. It just helps with appearance and my stress! Lol..
We just moved this week.😃 Hubby and I took 30 minutes turns packing then watching the kids. I played 30 minute clean with me music playlist to motivate from my channel! 😃
I like all of them! The idea of socks, well guess what? I have a whole bag of socks not matching and I was about to throw them away! Now I know what to do with them!! The suitcase thing is awesome for photo albums. Thanks for sharing all your great ideas!
The black bin bag one is fab! A,so like the sock /glasses idea. We have moved house 11 times in 14 hrs (ex mil) so have had some ok moves and not ok moves but we’re fortunate that they did the moving all for us - full pack /unpack. My top tip would be to buy some bottles of water, cans of coke etc and sandwiches/cakes for the removal team - keeps them sweet and they generally work so hard! Eager to see your new house videos! X
Honestly your content is always well thought out. Even when I think I’ve done it enough times to know, you teach me something extremely helpful!!! Thank you for your time and effort ❤️
Really useful video! We are moving too dear Emily!Thank you for sharing as always..my favorite hack was for the plates and for the table.I also found very clever and convenient putting the books into the suitcases!
As soon as I found out I’d be moving to Michigan in a week, I started to declutter everything. I actually just got rid of 2 garbage bags worth of clothes. I threw them both in a donation bin. :)
I’m watching this because I am moving to California from dc none of us are packed😂 but we’re moving in two weeks so I really needed this. I’ll update on how it went! 🥳
Some good tips, others not so much. Sharp pointed knives in oven mitt? They will poke through easily. Cut for box handles? That really depends on how heavy they are, may tear the whole box. Probably more. I liked the socks in glasses one.
Just watched a vacuum hack do it yourself with garbage bags. I’ve bought bags, and they don’t stay vacuumed. That combined with this video...EXCELLENT!!!
I'm so happy my husband is a Janitor and cleans businesses so a few jobs have tons of big boxes in the garbage or next to their box bin that he can get for our move!
Really found most of your tips helpful-probably using the garbage bags to vacuseal. I used to have vacuseal bags but threw them out, so this will save a lot of room for me in our move.
Naomi Scott I was a bit confused as well 😁 I asked myself “does she show us the wrong way first and afterwards the right way? Or is she just confusing vertically and horizontally?” Nonetheless, it is a great hack 👌🏻
Emily Thank you so much for showing the bag vacuum trick and cutting the handles for the boxes if the don't have one. Also, thank you for the hack when packing clothes on the hanger 😍😍😍👏🏽👏🏽
Hoping to move soon and have literally written down every tip from the video and these comments. These tips are going to make it so much easier. Thank you
Some great tips .I've been purging ,we've lived in this house for 45yrs, but as we get closer to when I'll be packing the day to day items I was wondering if I should check on UA-cam .Sure enough I came across you , thankyou for the tips
Emily, couple of tips for you; 1) when marking boxes, don’t just write or mark the top, do the sides too otherwise when the boxes are stacked, you won’t know what’s what, 2) if you are using a removal firm & they’re supplying boxes, try to only use theirs as they have a system for stacking in the lorries and random size boxes can make that harder and everything less stable, 3) when packing your plates, also stack vertically. If you are using a removal firm, they should really show you how to pack and supply paper, corrugated card, bubble wrap, tape etc so might be worth checking as although it might cost a bit more, there’s nothing worse than opening a box to find things broken. My Mum is the Queen of moving and virtually an expert at packing up a house, she’s done it so many times and even the removal firm our family use, know she knows what she’s doing and doesn’t need the “talk”. Good luck when it does finally happen. I’m hoping to be doing the whole thing again next year🤞, so empathise. Also you might want to check with your skip firm about the lawnmower, as usually electrical items can’t go in skips unless you’ve made special arrangements. Otherwise you could be charged extra as they need special WEEE processing. 🤷♀️ x
Great tip! Thanks!
It’s a good idea to keep an inventory! So you can see when box 5 has gone missing quickly!
I think just in general this is a good tip. Why let someone (who has intention of stealing) know what’s in the box.
We use duct tape strips on the boxes. One color for each room. When you get to the new house put a strip on the coriespondin room door so all can help unload and use tape strips to put in those rooms.
Yes that happened when my mum moved. She wrote soccer ball on the box. Box disappeared.
A moving tip: Put a set of bedding for each bed together & set up the beds first when you arrive at the new house. That night when you are too exhausted you can fall straight into bed as they were the first thing set up.
Thanks bc we are moving in a month and I have noodle arms and I will have to move boxes TwT
I have a futon I just lay on the floor, super portable, but will definitely remember this for my dad's bed. We have a cot for emergencies, but I'd rather not use it if we don't have to(he's getting older and it's hard on him to sleep on)
Oooh thank you
Excellent idea! Thank uyou!!
I'm not done watching the video so this might be mentioned but here's my tip:
Take a picture of the back of your TV so that when you arrive you can put the cords in easily
The vacuumed trash bag and the paper plates between the breakable plates are simply genius.
My tip would be to film a tour of your old house with everything in its place before you start packing up. I did this before I moved out of my very first apartment and it’s so nice to look back on, to remind you of a home you loved 🙂❤️ good luck with the move Emily, sooo excited for you! X
I’m doing the same ting
That's a great idea, thanks! We are moving soon.
This video has aged well. I’m moving too! Great hacking tips Mahalo 🤙🏽
Bravo...just bought my first home...and preparing now for the move. Thank you for these very useful hacks!

Bless you, thank you! Preparing for a move means I need more time. I appreciate this.
9:58 Newspaper is fine, but not enough. Table legs should also be covered with socks, like the stemmed glassware shown earlier.
5:34 The box is flat and horizontal, the wrapped frames are actually shown as being placed vertically. Some padding in between frames, especially those that may jut out a bit, would help avoid breaking during any impact.
frames must be vertical, she kept vertically but said horizontally ..lol.. maybe a bit of confusion with the wordplay
I’ve moved a lot.
Another thing I’ve always done is pack stuff you don’t need ahead of time and the essentials last. That way you don’t have a mad panic on the day.
The party plate idea is genius! Will definitely be using that in the future!

Or even better, pack in suitcases and you can roll the suitcase

@Nadia same I’m moving friday
yeah, making holes in moving boxes so the bugs and other critters can get in them while they are either in a garage or storage waiting to be shipped to their new home. Yes, I'm moving and will definitely do this now!!
I love this idea, but my suggestion is use any other color than black. That way, movers or people who are helping with your move don't mistake them with trash ! 😢😢
Just watched this with my 10 yr old granddaughter she said oooh she’s one smart lady 😂 I agree 😊
Ah thank you both 😘 Thank you so much for watching and stay safe Louise xx

I also write the box’s contents on one side. Example: “Kitchen- plates & bowls” That way, I don’t have to dig through every kitchen box to find the one thing I’m looking for!

My favourite was the way you packed the frames, the bin bag working as a vac pack and the paper plates .... so basically everything 💜

Pack crockery with the contents of your linen cupboard, fold the linen around the plates and stuff. Saves space and packing materials and works.
News paper in the legs to protect the new floors! Loved it!

When I finally came to do them, most items ended up at the charity shop anyway! Hopefully I've learnt my lesson this time round!
Haha sounds quite common Laura! Thank you so much for watching and stay safe xx
I’m so exited to see the notification on my phone saying:
Emily Norris Posted: My Brand New House Tour!!
Haha I cannot wait to make it Katie! Thank you so much for watching and stay safe xx
And btw great hacks! And thanks for liking my comment that made my day!
I will say i didn't care for vacuum seeling. Everytime i pulled something out, i had to rewash it because it was SO wrinkled. I loved using the bags over the clothes, especially if you have people helping because your clothes just get thrown everywhere and at least in the bags they are protected
The only video with REAL and useful moving tips !! Thank you for your job !
Using beach bags is a really good hack :)
Omg the bin bag vacuum hack is genius! Mum and I were like 😯 💕
V good im a serial mover, 2 more tips, put elastic bands around a load of clothes on hangers so its easier to take out of wardrobe and lay rugs on floor and roll whole lot together and put packing tape around!
Can't wait to see the new house. It's the end of an era but the beginning of a grand new adventure!
The hand cut-out hack for boxes is the BEST!
I never thought I’d say this because I’m not a fan of moving...but I can’t Wait for my next move so I can try out all of these hacks!
I'm litterly moving in two days and I haven't even started packing, great tips 👍🏻
Thanks for the tips! Will definitely use a laundry basket for day 1 items, pots for pantry, and local grocery stores for box sourcing.
I can't wait to see your new home Emily. I'm so happy for you guys! X
Love these tips! I’ve never paid for boxes in my life, I just go to walmart or local shops on recycle day and take them! Ahha
Love that sock hack to wrap glassware. I don't have a newspaper subscription so this is great for me.
I’m here 3 years later and you have made me smile … such helpful tips … I have been soooooo stressed out .. but this vid was ❤️
Dear Emily, I wish you and your family a lot of love and fun in your new home! Good luck with the move!
Best packing hack video. Glad i found it b4 moving to a new house. Taking books to a suit case is genius.
Really useful video! We are moving too dear Emily!Thank you for sharing as always..my favorite hack was for the plates and for the table.I also found very clever and convenient putting the books into the suitcases!
I’m moving for the first time in a month so this is SO HELPFUL! Thank you so much!
As soon as I found out I’d be moving to Michigan in a week, I started to declutter everything.
I actually just got rid of 2 garbage bags worth of clothes.
I threw them both in a donation bin. :)
I hope you kept all the warmest clothes!
I’m watching this because I am moving to California from dc none of us are packed😂 but we’re moving in two weeks so I really needed this. I’ll update on how it went! 🥳
Beautiful and useful hacks. I like the triangle handle of boxfes, store knife in oven gloves and moving books in handbags instead of boxes.
Thank you for watching x
Some good tips, others not so much. Sharp pointed knives in oven mitt? They will poke through easily. Cut for box handles? That really depends on how heavy they are, may tear the whole box. Probably more. I liked the socks in glasses one.
Excellent ‘tis that will definitely help me. Thank you for sharing 💕
I moved flat/house twice last year these would have been amazing! I will definitely use them next time x
Thank you so much for watching and stay safe Lauren xx
Love that you state how many boxes each room needs on average! You’re always so helpful!!💕
The make your own space saver bag was brilliant.
Really found most of your tips helpful-probably using the garbage bags to vacuseal. I used to have vacuseal bags but threw them out, so this will save a lot of room for me in our move.
This was so great! Especially, color coding boxes according to the room they should go in - brilliant! Thanks!
We’re moving in a week so this couldn’t have come at a better time! 😍
Taking pictures of decor placement is Such a good idea!!!
LOVE the socks over the glasses! And the vacuum bag that you can make yourself.
You’ve got the frames packing hack the other way around 😁 should pack them vertically rather than horizontally 😊
Naomi Scott I was a bit confused as well 😁 I asked myself “does she show us the wrong way first and afterwards the right way? Or is she just confusing vertically and horizontally?”
Nonetheless, it is a great hack 👌🏻
I noticed this too! A lot of folks get vertical/horizontal reversed! 😉
I don't think I've ever subscribed so fast to a YT channel. So many tips that were fresh to me and will help us with our coming move. Thank you!
Horizontal direction for pictures in the box was my favorite, never thought of that!
Great video, I will use some of these tips for my upcoming move...especially the paper plates between the dishware! So great, thanks!
Thank you
Perfect timing, I'm moving in 5 weeks, thanks for the useful hacks
Some great tips .I've been purging ,we've lived in this house for 45yrs, but as we get closer to when I'll be packing the day to day items I was wondering if I should check on UA-cam .Sure enough I came across you , thankyou for the tips
Great hacks! Ww moved a lot when I was a kid. Our number 1 hack was to label every box with what was in it and what room it was going in.
My favourite is possibly the most simplest: cutting handles into boxes!! 😳 SO HELPFUL!!
Perfect timing! I just accepted a job in another state :) Going to move cross country so this is super helpful!
Wow best of luck! Thank you so much for watching and stay safe xx
Great moving tips! As moving professionals, we love seeing helpful content like this being shared. Thanks for helping make moving easier for everyone!
Excellent. Using paper plates to protect glass plates. So many clever ideas.
Thank you so much! I am moving and I love the idea of using socks for wine/champagne glasses :)
