Too funny. I saw the thumbnail and I was like, "What?!? A new kindle - how did I miss this news?" Then I thought, oh, Maneetpaul is bored so now he is opening up a kindle and showing us the insides! I would like to see the insides of a kindle.... then I clicked on the video and figured out, oh, it is April Fool's Day today! Keep up the great work! Your videos are always the perfect length, information, and quality!
Such a clever April Fool’s video idea! Funny and yet still the same detailed and thoughtful review we’ve come to expect from you. Thanks for the smile!
Wow! I remember reading about these when they came out but I've never seen one, certainly not in such detail. Very cool history lesson. Loved seeing the early attempts to migrate concepts relating to a familiar physical item into a digital version; that wedge shape to feel like a folded-back book is so out-there compared to our flattish devices these days yet makes total sense! Imagine being the designers tasked with this and with a total blank slate before you and coming up with this; they did a pretty terrific job!
This was fab. Reminds me of why I eventually plumped for the Basic White, 10th Gen. No fingerprints. These Kindles were built to last. I recently sold my 4th Gen, on eBay. It's 11 years and people are still buying them! It was very minimal and I occasionally miss the simplicity of it and the physical buttons. I have my new Kindle set up to look as near as damn it the same. That is, until the most recent update arrived. I don't really use the built in light, except for emergencies! It'd be cool to see all of the old Kindles revisited. But, that might get a bit expensive!😉📚
The first gen Kindle was definitely pretty cool for what it was, even if I like my more streamlined one. Weirdly, though, my 2014 Paperwhite actually stopped holding a charge (it only lasts for like a day now?), which was what prompted me to upgrade to my Oasis in 2021. Kind of surprised that the original model is still working that well. Maybe the old owner didn't read it to death.
OMG! I'm glad I just watched this! I have 2 of these in a drawer, one has a dead battery and the other one has a mark on the screen. I didn't know the back cover is removable. I'm going to switch the batteries!!
I remember my 1st Kindle back in 2010, the 3rd gen kindle keyboard. It didn't have a built in light so I got a fancy cover for it that had a cool slip in light with a goose neck, I thought I was somethin else! LOL! The battery lasted forever! Then I moved on to the Voyage in 2014. Oh I loved it, with the built in front light and page turn buttons. Again, brilliantly long battery. Then on to the Oasis in 2021. Another one with wonderful front light and page turn buttons. But the friggin battery sucks! Like it literally lasts a couple days if I'm lucky. Am I the only one???
Haha, you got me. This is the first time I've seen the original Kindle. I have a 2nd generation (2009) Kindle that is very different. Amazon did a total revamp. Kindle covers had a small lamp that was folded inside the cover and could be pulled out for use.
@@Maneetpaul Yep, and if I recall correctly, they were only on the high end versions of the first-party cases, for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gen, and the 5th gen basic. They hooked into holes on the left (on 2nd and 3rd generations) or contacts on the back near the bottom (for 4th generation and 5th gen basic) to get power, and only turned on when folded out. Some people would modify the lower-end cases to tap power for third-party book lights.
(14:31) The set of screensavers with tips and photos of famous authors was something that was, as far as I know, used all the way to the 3rd generation. The set of writing-related screensavers used on modern Kindle e-readers was introduced with the 4th generation, which was also the first to offer more UI language options than just English, and also the first to feature an initial setup process (instead of just opening the manual on first start-up). (14:39) Ad-supported Kindle e-readers was introduced with the 3rd generation. (5:31) It's just overkill for regular plain text novels. For stuff like picture books, illustrated and graphic novels, as well as audiobooks, 32 GB of storage would certainly help. I have an e-reader with 64 GB of storage for all the comics I read on it and more!
I have a fully functional kindle that i got in 2013 and still read on. It has buttons on both sides to turn the page. Micro usb. Storage 1.5 gbs. Buttons at the bottom for other options but no keyboard. No touch screen. No back-light. List on home page, no covers. It was the basic model back then.
I feel like the kindle 3 keyboard was the best. Mine is still kicking ass. 😂 love it. Love it. It has talk to text, real buttons on the keyboard and buttons, it has a headphone Jack. I use it a lot.
LMAO, you had me going bro lol, in all seriousness my favorite kindle of all time is the kindle keyboard model. A friend of mine still uses it. I’m currently enjoying my paper white signature edition. Like you’re Chanel, keep up the good vids . Cheers
Fun, but I really want one. The buttons the color, sound ability, keyboard, and the size are excellent. I'm in the UK so the second version would be preferable. Come on Amazon gives us an updated version, please. I have both a Paperwhite and an Oasis, but larger , oh yes.
I still use an old Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight (I have a Kobo Clara as well). One of the earliest lighted ereaders. It has a touchscreen, WiFi, page turn buttons, an SD card reader, the lighted screen and you can load custom screensavers. Readers have come a long way since then, but they lost a lot too.
😂😂 you got me! This was a really neat review. I agree about not wanting a physical keyboard, but it would be nice to make less typos! Lol. I’m hoping they eventually work in a good autocorrect and predictive text (maybe that’s too much software for these??)
Very interesting to see how kindle has evolved over the years! I also wanted to ask if I should buy a paper white signature edition 11 gen 2021 or wait for the new oasis? And do you have any predictions when the new oasis may come out? Let me know your thoughts! Thanks!
I have no idea when a new Oasis will come out :( The Paperwhite is still very new, so if you’re in the market for a Kindle, I’d suggest getting that instead of waiting!
I have a 2009 Kindle, which still works perfectly. Unfortunately, the Amazon store no longer supports it! 🤬 The light I had was part of the cover. The only complaint I ever had was its poor browsing or email experience.
Very cool. I never saw one of these back in the day, the first one I saw had the regular rectangular keyboard. (Probably a gen 2, but matching the gen 3 that I own.) I assume that the "random faces" comment at 14:32 is another April Fools joke, because the example you showed matches the screensavers from the gen 3, which are all famous authors from Englush Literature. 😁
It’s the ErgoChair, I actually have a review video of it on my UA-cam channel. It’s one of my most viewed videos that got me started on UA-cam before I started making Kindle videos.
It's really impressive to me that a 15-year-old mobile device is still operational and usable. It came out in 2007 and you said the update you received was from 2016. An Android phone or even an iPhone half that age would be barely usable. Sure, it's not really a fair comparison since the functionality of a Kindle is very limited but it's impressive nontheless.
I remember when this first came out! I was so interested in it but the price tag scared me off. I ended up getting the second generation and it was the best thing ever. I would probably still have it but one of my kids broke it and I ended up having to buy a kindle paperwhite (first gen).
I paid every penny of the $399 when it came out. It was freaking amazing

thanks for that, it was definitely interesting to see the first gen and appreciate how far we've come now instead of taking tech for granted

If u replace battery maybe it can last 20 years
That was interesting. I remember considering buying it but I decided to wait till the next model came out. I still have it too, and it works nicely.
These things last forever!
Happy April fools Maneetpaul. Good one. Have a great day
I had the first one on the day it was released… cost me almost $400.00 my aunt and I went half’s on it! We still have it!!!

Fascinating video. Thank you!
Yeah when it first launched I laughed at the price and would say things like "who reads digital book".
Fast forward I now primarily read ebooks lol.
Unironically I'd use this. I love old tech.
Old tech can be the best! I recently bought an old iPod Nano and love using it every morning so I don't have to use my phone

Really cool! Once you explained, I can see why it was so expensive
Hmm... Wikipedia also listed this as micro-USB port but that definitely look more like mini-USB port.
AH! You're right. It's Mini-USB. I'm so used to the micro ones on the recent Kindles that I said it by mistake. Good catch!
