At least on mine ,(received Monday to replace an Oasis damaged late last month) wake on open is inconsistent. With admittedly few data points it seems to fail to wake when the case has been closed for several hours
It's far more economically efficient for them to manufacture a design with the button at the bottom, because the entire circuitboard with literally everything but the battery is at the bottom. There's a short custom ribbon cable that runs from the PCB to the battery, which is less than ideal from an electrical engineering design, but is their solution for balancing the weight of the device better. Putting the button at the top would mean putting another long cable that runs the full length of the device internally, which would have potential to cause problems or cost far more in R&D than it's worth.
Yep, two e-ink color display with pen support. That would be not just ultimate ebook reader, but a digital notebook. Just hope it won't be too expensive that you may consider getting iPad instead.
For B&W e-ink at least one company did it a few years ago, though the use case was sheet music on concert stands. It had a foot control option as a result.
Wish there was more mention of the Oasis than the quick on screen caption. As an Oasis owner, I feel really disillusioned with the current line because I can’t get something as simple as page turn buttons. I love the Kindle for all the reasons you mentioned up top, but keeping a micro USB cable around just for that is archaic. A Colorsoft Oasis with USB-C would easily have been a $400 purchase I would have made in an instant but I think I’m just going to keep waiting.
I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been waiting for kindle updates as my oasis has lived a rough life, and an oasis with USB-C, color, and their page turn buttons would’ve been a day 1 purchase for me. I’ll be sitting out for this round of kindles instead.
To solve this issue I got a set of cables with magnetic adapters - micro USB, Lightning, USB-C. Works quite well. I got a used Kindle Voyage some years ago but unfortunately it kept turning pages by accidental touches on the screen. Tried the previous gen Oasis (no backlight temperature) but compared to the voyage directly, the contrast was noticeably worse. So i ended up selling the Oasis. There is apparently an option to disable the touch screen page turns on the Voyage by jailbreaking it and enabling a hidden option only available on waterproof paperwhite models, but haven’t tried that yet
I've got the previous paper white 6.8" signature edition and it's incredible. I love it. It's one handed reader so I can lay on my side and read with it. The screen is spot on. I can't see me buying a colour version to be honest. I use it as a paper book replacement so don't need any other features.
What I love about Michael's reviews is his amazing narration in his voice overs. The choice of words is just shimmer in the fairy flavor icecream. And they are soooo damn detailed. I have barely seen a correction note in his editing.
MrMobile, your video was like finding a golden fork in a spaghetti forest! 🌟 Just when I thought I’d seen it all, you serve up a tech feast that’s both delicious and surprising. Keep whipping up these digital delights!
The number one thing I want from a kindle is legible, zoomable images that have their captions on the same page. Stuff like color or higher resolution etc is far less important. In fact in think it’ll only dilute the market positioning of kindle, making it compete more with regular tablets.
I really like that comparison of the color provided to newspapers! Before, I was mulling waiting a few more generations for color performance to improve to an "acceptable" level. But if it's at the point of newspaper comics, well that sounds good enough to me! Thanks for the review Mr Fisher!
I can imagine a hinged device with three screens. One color on the front of the device, for the cover of books or content with images, but then inside two higher pixel density black and white displays that create the illusion of reading from a true book.
@@TheMrMobile well damn, there goes my casual name drop efforts to get a table! We just tried Good Fork Pub and thought it was pretty good! With this weather, outdoor dining is *chef's kiss*. 9:00 I got a duo when it went on fire sale and the number 1 use I got out of it was reading. If that thing had an e-ink display it would be an incredible e-reader.
It's such a wonderful series. Character voices are *perfect* and I love the pseudo-horror bits. Even the time travel has a fresh new angle. What a masterpiece.
I've never used an eReader, but recently picked up a used surface duo and found that it is a good replacement for carrying a paperback in my bag for downtime reading. My wife uses a tablet but the form factor didn't fill that habitual, thumb in the middle, book position that helps me relax and get lost in a book. The duo does that. What a shame it didn't survive.
While I'm planning on moving away from Kindle and Amazon in my future ereader endeavors, I do appreciate that they'll be bringing stuff like color e-ink to more people, which, as when Apple does something, could cause some cascading effects within the industry via that newfound consumer awareness causing more desire for those features. Hopefully brands like Kobo and Boox can benefit from more interest in e-ink with color as interest causes a boon in the technology. Ditto foldable e-ink devices, which I'd also love to see (something I once tweeted at you about, even) if that does end up being in Amazon's crosshairs.
But the problem I feel like what does is that the people are coming into it with the idea it's going to be as good as a but if you don't understand tell they're easier you're going to be disappointed in the colors because you assume it's going to look like a LCD or printed piece of paper with color on it
I remember my godson gave me a Kindle for Christmas in 2009. It took me a while to set it up and use it and although I prefer paper books I enjoyed it. It was great for commuting and travel. It finally croaked last year.
I'd love to see you do a video on the scribe. I've had one since launch and I'm obsessed with it. It's my favorite gadget I own. But I can totally understand why it's divisive (even i admit that price point is ridiculous.) It's such a cool device though.
I'm more a Kobo kind of guy, but I skipped the color ones due to the sharpness loss due to the color filter. If you mostly read books and occasionally a comic, you can truly see the color filter even when it's just black and white
I'd like the colour e ink for no other reason than viewing the book covers in my library but my last gen paper white is so close to being the perfect device for its function that I can't justify it. I need a bigger draw than just 'now with colour' but I'm not sure what that feature might be.
a surface-style kindle would honestly be a near-instant buy for me if the price was fair enough. i love my ipad 10 for reading, but oh my gosh a surface duo with an e-ink display (and hopefully stylus support like the scribe too) could pull me away from my fruit tablet when it comes to consuming words and notation. my ipad is my first born child, but ohhhh that concept is tempting!
I had the Boox Color one that was 10in, and most of the time I wanted an ONLY MONOCHROME mode, since even when color wasn't being displayed, color was attempted to be displayed. If that makes sense. Also, that version had terrible ghosting even after 20 refreshes. I was able to get monochrome, just had to use a third party launcher to unhide the actual settings menu, and since it's android, activate Developer Mode, and then activate MONOCHROME.
Just updated my 11th gen paper white to the latest software version (15.7.1). It feels way faster so if you’re looking at getting a kindle I’d recommend looking for a used 11th gen. No real improvements other than color and even so I’d wait for a few more generations of colored eink to release before purchasing any colored ereader. Downsides don’t outweigh the benefits currently for me.
Have you reviewed the Boox note air 4c or the pocketbook inkpad eo? I’m thinking of upgrading my kindle and I love the idea of those, overkill as they are, I’d like to splurge
Is colorsoft even that useful? Apart from seeing the book covers and few illustrations in color what more use it has ? I have tried reading graphic novels on kindle and it isn't fun and that is because of the form factor of kindle. Seems like new kindle paperwhite is the most logical thing to buy
I've easily saved hundreds ever since I bought a kindle. Especially by borrowing ebooks from your local library via libby. I've never understood the need for color. I feel like if you read a lot of comics you'd prolly want to do that on an iPad. The price tag is steep. I don't think paying almost x2 the price enhances your reading experience by x2. I really hate the power button's location. I accidentally lock my screen all the time. Especially if you're trying to use it one handed. I much rather have a side button to turn the page and move the power button to the top.
Really informative. As with many others I've been eagerly anticipating a colour Kindle and for a 1st gen this looks really promising. Glad to see a good collection of Trek novels in your library, I loved Destiny!
I'm kind of cheap and lately, not very intelligent to read as I used to, but I have been wanting to have a good e reader to get back to that, the kindle looks like the wise option, and as you mentioned, the entry level or paper white the most. Nice review as always
I want an E ink tablet I can draw on for tutoring. I do not want to use my iPad anymore because it hurts my eyes. What a ink tablet should I buy? I would like a screen that is as large as possible, and I need a stylist with it, though I am willing to pay extra for it if it’s good. I would prefer the ability to scale my image by pinching with my fingers, but if there is another way to zoom in and out on the canvas, I would consider it.
I was kind of disappointed in the Colorsoft, to be honest. It uses the same Kaleido 3 screen as other readers, so the display is only marginally better, and it's more expensive. Instead, I opted for the Kobo Libra Colour. It's got a very similar color screen, and it's pen-enabled. I think that makes it a better value. You should check that out for your next review. :)
is anyone really 'loyal' to the kindle? I thought it was mostly amazon's scale or them selling the devices at a loss that makes them appealing in terms of price, availability, and library. I really hate how hard it is to get other file formats to work on those devices (and typed notes is a must these days), so while my family has a large amazon library I'm not exactly a fan
1:28 I will say, the Kindle's user base is loyal because most of them have been locked into an Ecosystem. The inability for people to easily load PDFs and EPUBs onto their device means they're stuck with Amazon's ecosystem. It's the same reason I don't feel like switching from Steam to Epic Game - I've already invested so much into my library. More power to the people who sideload programs only their Kindles. I'm gunna stick to my Kobo Libra h20 (as well as my physical books) for now though...
I traded in a third gen for a little green base model. Even the cheapest one is just so easy to read and lasts for so long. If the battery hadn't become so compromised I'd probably still have the third gen.
I have a soft spot for Kindles even though I haven't even opened mine since getting a foldable. It's still *another* device to carry, obsolated (if I may) by phones with big screens.
Grr can't believe they didn't fix the power button on the bottom of the Paperwhite! It's my only complaint about the device really. I'm with you, especially after yesterday, of spending more time reading and less time on laptop/phone
As a comic reader, I can't really see myself picking one up over just using my phone or iPad, which both display the full beautiful art from things like Marco Checchetto's work on Ultimate Spider-Man
Yeah but a Duo-style Kindle will be like two Kindles-in-1, pricing-wise, without any additional benefit and with twice the weight thickness. Really don't think they'll go in that direction.
My Kindle Colorsoft has the yellow band at the bottom, so I am returning it. It is not as comfortable to hold the Colorsoft as my Kindle Oasis. It is more responsive though.
I've had the colorsoft a week. Sending it back and getting the paperwhite signature instead. Dark/grainy screen Yellow band Battery comparable to my Oasis
I have wondered why no one has jumped back into the duo world!? Having foldable with all glass screens!? I am okay with the middle black line if durability and use remain more normal. Put an outside screen too!? There are so many amazing possible options. An outside small screen even? Or basically make a sidekick style phone. Where you kick out another full sized phone from under the one. It would basically be the same but with only needing 2 phone screens.
Not enough for me to ditch my kindle basic I got last summer, but still pretty cool. The colour tech just isn't worth it. Kindle basic for reading books plus my Honor x9 tablet for comics still feels like the best balance.
A folding Kindle would be an instabuy for me. I feel the tablet style Kindle peaked a while ago, everything since the original Paperwhite has just been subtle improvements.
People look at devices differently on big purchases. That’s why they noticed problems. I want a kindle but try using my moto razr front screen on continuously stroll not bad.

What star trek book were you reading that shows the paDD and the desktop monitor?
Love my Scribe. This looks like a great option if you're looking for a color display, but I just don't see the need for the color.
I can't find the pink kindle anywhere 😢
Does anyone know why they kept the power button in the bottom?
Bro looking like Tony Stark love those glasses
Will my paper white signature 2021 cover/sleeve fit my new colour soft
Still love my Oasis, the side section is just perfect for the way I read. Keeping it until I no longer have a choice to change.
I've had the colorsoft a week. Sending it back and getting the paperwhite signature instead.
Dark/grainy screen
Yellow band
Battery comparable to my Oasis
Another great video MrMobile! What's the name of BGM used in the pricing section, till the end of the video?
I have wondered why no one has jumped back into the duo world!? Having foldable with all glass screens!? I am okay with the middle black line if durability and use remain more normal. Put an outside screen too!? There are so many amazing possible options. An outside small screen even? Or basically make a sidekick style phone. Where you kick out another full sized phone from under the one. It would basically be the same but with only needing 2 phone screens.
Mr Mobile do you think we will ever see another iteration of the Amazon phone?
So does the Colorsoft also have the power button on the bottom or only the paperwhite?
Not enough for me to ditch my kindle basic I got last summer, but still pretty cool.
The colour tech just isn't worth it. Kindle basic for reading books plus my Honor x9 tablet for comics still feels like the best balance.
Would love to see a comparison of note taking tablets like the remarkable and the boox note series
A folding Kindle would be an instabuy for me. I feel the tablet style Kindle peaked a while ago, everything since the original Paperwhite has just been subtle improvements.
If it wasn't for amazon e-ink displays would be a thing of the past, like 3d tv's
I'm grateful they are persevering with it
its a gen-1 device. I will probaby wait for gen-3 or 4 for a fleshed out device with less hardware/software issue
People look at devices differently on big purchases. That’s why they noticed problems. I want a kindle but try using my moto razr front screen on continuously stroll not bad.
Love these videos man, elegant as always, once again well done 👍👌
Please do do videos on Boox devices. Also please do videos on Gallery 3 devices.
I'm still rocking my ancient model that still has page turn buttons. It was such a mistake to remove them.
watching you all the way from india and since the good old days of pocket now!
