Average summer temps here are in the 118F range.... Can easily hit 130+ inside the car. Wouldn't think of putting asphalt in the vehicle, it will melt and ooze and it will reek petrochemical fumes into the vehicle. I stopped the nasty bass bounce from my new speakers in my wide open empty truck doors with EVA craft foam sheets (comes in many thicknesses) and used Permatex high temp gasket maker to adhere it to the metal. Worked great!
I used a similar product under the carpet on my '68 Mustang. I primarily did it to keep the exhaust heat from coming through but an added bonus is the floor is now waterproof, Mustang floors rust easily. I taped up all of the seams with foil duct tape and after 8 years and countless summer driving trips I have never smelled the asphalt. The car is now a pleasure to drive on a hot summer day. The key is taping up every seam with the foil tape.

I just did the doors in my 2013 Hyundai Tucson. It now feels like a recording studio when the doors close. I can't wait to do the floors, where most of the tire noise seems to come from now.

I bought a roll of this stuff and used it in the rear corners of the standard cab in my 1990 Cummins Turbo Diesel, when I replaced the rear speakers. You've got to have sound dampening in that! Works great. Even put an small, extra sheet over the fiberglass housing covering my air conditioning system, facing the downpipe of a custom 4" exhaust system, for extra insulation. Works great!!
Never use an asphalt based product on a vertical surface as the heat will cause it to "melt". Asphalt is ok for a roof but not in a moving vehicle. If the shit falls off the panel, it could get bound up in your window mechanism and cause a lot of damage.

Applied this technique to a 2008 Subaru Tribeca with no weld issues, just zero noise dampening. I used Grace Membrane which is what I had on hand (and is as sticky as the adhesive used on the plastic insulation). You have to cover all your bases by at least covering 90 percent of empty spots while making sure you get into each corner as much as possible. I also took small strips and turned them into adhesive bumpers to put in between the cross braces and the actual door sheet metal, and I did this in at least four places on each cross member, making sure that two of the spots were the ends and that none of the membrane interferes with the window. The only drawback to this fixing the problem is that it fixed it TOO good meaning now I have to do the other doors.🤣😎 Excellent idea, sir!
you know, this video is where i got the idea for the cheap alternative for my own car. And a rattle can anyway, a 1996 Camry. But that insulation was very useful. aid had it stolen and they found it stripped in a tow yard afterwards. No interior at ALL (easiest way to the sound components). So i had a blank slate. I started with two layers of that on the floor , inside the doors on the outer skin, the firewall in bother sides doubled up. heated with propane propane torch and a wood roller to really get it on.
Then a gallon on flex seal toweled on and left to bake in the texas august sun for 3 days with the doors open. Put heavy plastic down at one point plus the doors for a vapor barrier, after it had begun to solidify, and then glued the carpet back down.
Lastly, the wheel wells made the biggest difference in dB. I rolled that flex seal on, then that aliminum air duct tape with the strands in it was over top.
went from 110 db on highway @ 70mph…. to 63db.
that was 3 years ago and i took all the panel and carpet off the clean em and upgrade the sound again, it’s all still perfectly good.

The aluminum duct tape layer is an excellent idea. If you have a connection with someone in the commercial aviation field you may get your hands on the thicker, stickier mill spec rolls.
Very handy for other miscellaneous roadside repairs as well. I keep some in my vehicle along with the bailing wire, zip ties box.
Say no more..i am in africa i can't get anything like noico over here easily..someone came to fix my roof and i saw this same flash band in this video i stick it to bare sheet of metal and throw it on the floor..it sounded very solid..that was it..i went out to my local building material store and got two rolls..been using it ever since

A couple days ago I got a great price on a used Subaru Legacy, but when I shut the doors, it rattled and screamed out "This is the cheapest Subaru Legacy available anywhere in the country." I ran to Home Depot last night and picked this stuff up (it now goes under the brand name Pro Force), and today the door makes a nice thump that says "This is a luxury car with real quality construction." I didn't put any on the plastic door panel, just the metal on the inside of the door. Loving it now, thanks again.

I have been using Frost King Duct insulation for AC duct, it's come in a roll 12 inches wide and 1/2 inch thick. It is made for heat and cool reduction and work great for sound deadening. The coast is about the same it's less than $20.00 dollars a roll. So far no problems it has a sticky back and rolls and presses out to form around the whatever shape the doors are. You can find it at Home Depot and Lows in the Insulation isle. I just clean the inside of the door good and cut it roll it up to get inside the door and press fit it, use and little tape to seal it up and good to go.
Is there a temp range on the stuff? In my internet wanderings, someone posted that they'd managed to turn a construction grade soundproofing alternative to "goo". Its possible he was in a region with high temps (not that anyone ever leaves out minor technical details).

If you disconnect the car battery first, that should stop any false fault lights coming on. Reconnect it all afterwards though 😉

Aluminum and the butenyl is used to absorb vibration, not to be a sound deadener. 25% panel coverage is when you start seeing diminishing returns. Though you might see a marginal gain reduction in sound absorbtion doing full coverage over tiles.
Vinyl, lead sheeting, serbothane, melamine foam are used for sound deadening.

I’ve seen mass loaded vinyl, would the Home Depot shower floor liner help catch the sound wave if I drape it across the door, secure it at the top and just let it float over the vibration stuff....
Also, 🤔 duct sealer has a foam like material in it.

Completely wrong...The stuff is actually used as a patching aid for home and RV...Has nothing to do with absorbing vibration..Go to Lowes and read the stuff...I'm using it as a sound deadening mat on my truck as I speak..It may not be made for such, but it works like a charm...
I had a 2001 Dodge pickup. It was just a single cab, basic truck. I did this same, basic thing to the doors. It did help a little with road noise, but it made a huge difference in stereo aound. I just had a cheap pioneer deck with 2 6×9 speakers. One in bottom corner of each door. The doors became well insulated speaker boxes and the speakers put out a LOT more base with better sound. Enough that some people assumed i had a subwoofer. Thoroughly covering the inside of doors with sound deadener will also make a huge difference in door speaker sound if your doors don't have any sound deadener.

Good Vid! The only downside of this approach is that if the car is left in the sun the tar melts and the tape falls off inside the door... don't ask me how I know...! (for reference I had the same problem with "Silent Coat" which was a LOT more expensive than the roofing strip
Just came here looking for this. Saw this at the hardware while getting a fiberglass kit for my 1st try at custom speaker pods. I immediately picked one up and from the weight I could feel this was definitely a substitute, at less than a quarter of the price. Thank goodness I only bought enough of the pricey stuff to do the front doors. But you can bet your sweet ass I'm gonna completely cover my car now. Perhaps even myself, why not
You can spend over $100 on the "BRAND" stuff which is ridiculous. I bought this same product for my 2 dr single cab Dodge ram. I cleaned the surface and used 3M spray on glue with it and it's been on for 2 years straight with no problems. I covered the doors and the back. I have 4 speakers, a sub box and 2 amps and not only it sounds better now but it reduced road noise a great deal. No one is going to see the brand on the insulation if that's what anyone is worried about lmao. Good video, keep posting.

You can take one of the terminals off of the battery so that when you unplug the airbag and plug it in after, you wouldn't get the airbag light.
the problem with cheaper sound dampening materials is longevity and the release of toxic chemicals. the material he used is similar to expensive products desingned to add weight to the metal, thereby lowering the resonant frequency. this reduces noises generated by the metal, reduces the ringing sound of a speaker playing onto metal surfaces, and to some extent it blocks a bit of road noise. however, to really block road noise, a noise barrier type material is needed. the most effective material to do this is thick butyl rubber composite mats. these are the even more expensive treatments that companies such as scosche, second skin, dynamat, etc sell. there's a guy on youtube, caraudiofabrication that has a pretty good instructional video on the different types of sound treatments and more importantly, how they should be advised. cheers. and thanks zed4me for the video. keep treating those doors man!
So i went back through becouse your vidio is the one I based my decision on using this stuff. I have a single cab dodge ram 2001. Open the pannels and a thin layer of plastic covers the doors. That's it. Very very basic on these trucks. So mine wasn't quite as pretty as yours, I used my hands to flatten and rub the sticky side in. I have full confidence that this stuff is going nowere quick. Once it sticks its practically over... lol I lined nearly the entire inside of my door in rows... right off the bat road test... just by old artillery ears, 50% reduction in noise level. This stuff is really amazing so for anyone who thinks that it won't work, stick your foot in your mouth. Take the leap and try it.... you will be surprised. It actually made my stock 2001 speakers so robust, I had to turn my sub level down by 3 levels on my stereo. Lol you have to do it yourself to believe the difference. It's only 16 bucks guys.... and thank you, for your vidio

I've always said that if someones spending more in sound deadening, than a quality set of components, they're doing it wrong. Foam behind the speaker on the door, and in front to couple to the door, are most important. Fastrings can do it for you quick. Just pricey for what you get.
Peel n seal has never failed on me. But I also use roofing tar tubes to help adhere it too.
Maybe someone just wants a more silent ride

I'm a fleet mechanic work on 18 wheelers trucks and sometimes trailers. Well they have this stuff just like Dynamat it's called Imperial 7618 Trailer Repair Tape, 6" X 50' (6 inches by 50 feet) it's Butyl based NOT asphalt based so there is little no to order stuff works great it's about 70$ on Amazon maybe cheaper if you look around.

Victor Ramirez Assuming you are talking about the 50' roll, that is 25 sq/ft. You can get more of the cheaper brands of purpose built sound deadening for less.

I Just went to Lowes and Home Depot, Frost King was not sticky enough for my taste and Lowes had some stuff made from asphalt so I settled for Noico 80mil, 36sqft is about $60 on eBay and it is intended for Cars, Same as Dynamat
I did this right after watching this video about a year ago. It's the exact same as day 1. It deadened the the rattling, sound quality got way better to where I could actually hear great midbass, most of all it absolutely did not smell like asphalt. Maybe someday I will install actual dynamat but as of right now it's doing just fine. I'd recommend this to amyone, but if you have trouble putting this stuff in your vehicle then just go with dynamat. I also applied herculiner to the interior of my cab.🤙

Nice video share :-). I agree with your idea 100% but for the same price you can get some real deadener. Trust me I am a car guy I also compete in SPL (Bass Competitions). Ive use Peel and seal and other similar brands it is asphalt based and will not perform like real deadener. Even used it on my own car, I eventually removed and applied some quality stuff. Don't get my comment wrong it did the job, but the car audio deadener does the job even better - car sounds like a tank haha.

I did this way back in 2012. Got the same product from Home Depot. Installed on my 2007 Scion TC because the door speakers sounded like shit. Even good door speakers sounded bad. Night and day difference after installing it. My door speakers actually had nice tight bass too them afterwards. Opening and closing the door sounded way better as well. About to put this stuff in the door of a 2002 chevy blazer I just bought for my kid. Its a little cash truck practically given to me. Only thing is the door speakers sound as bad as the 07 scions did.

High quality sound deadening material is made with a thick, butyl rubber adhesive with an aluminum backing. The stuff from Home Depot or any hardware stores is composed of an asphalt adhesive with a (thinner) aluminum backing. It isn't as effective, makes your car wreak of asphalt, shrouds the interior environment in toxins, and falls off in hotter weather.

I dislike it.
1. When he closed the door he probably scratched his side skirt (with the airbag module hanging from the door).
2. He did not clean the inside of the door (there is wax in there) prior to putting on the the mats. They could fall off at some point.
3. He did not disconnect battery (hence the airbag fault code). Why didnt he disconnect negative lead for safety?
4. He used a product that contains Bitumen. Noone does that anymore. Bitumen is soft when warm and stiff when cold. It kind of drys over time and become brittle at some point (really hard to remove).
5. Bitumen will make the car smell like crap (especially in the summer). I will never go away.
6. He did not replace the vapor barrier - so he just did half the job. Thats like sound comaing - not sound deadening.
He wanted to save some bucks and he ended up shooting himself in the foot by using a product not fit for the job and by bad execution.
Why should anyone advertise how NOT to do it? Ignorance...
Also - the dude is trying to sound-deaden a convertible. Does it make sense to you? If it was a 7 series... OK. But a Z roadster? Serious? Whats the next step? Putting Bitumen on the soft top?
I have to disagree with you on some points, He did say that he was going to clean it @ 2:52 then he skipped to actually installing after he cleaned it off screen. @ 4:51, he did replace the vapor barrier.
Like you, I would be concerned about the smell and yes, he wasn't careful about closing the door with the airbag and other things hanging out so he could have scratched his side skirt. He should have disconnected the negative terminal of the battery prior to doing anything with the airbag. He never said he was a professional, we all make mistakes, learn from them and move on. However, it did sound like it did quiet his door down for a fraction of the cost. I am not sure of how long it will last. When I researched many brands of sound deadening materials, many of them contain some sort of asphalt mix, how would that not smell the same as what he used?

if you want to disconnect anything in a car (airbag, sensors, even certain lights) you have to first disconnect battery so it doesn't trigger codes
