Can’t agree there. I was faced with that choice in 2010 but chose a SLK350. Kept it for 11 years and despite its woeful build quality and reliability, I loved it. Got a Z4 M40i now which makes me wish I’d tried a Z4 sooner
@@colin7632The Mazda MX5 has roughly the same power to weight ratio as a Nissan 240z! The MX5 is great at its price but really would need to be an MX7 😮
My 2000 Boxster is running well and has been a very reliable car and a blast to drive, particularly in the curves. The Z4 is definitely a contender for a consideration!
Happy ending to this one 😀. At the start I was sure it was going to end up on your forecourt for £4500 to include £3k worth of very recent service history and a trip through the demi monde of Greater Manchester's indie BMW specialists. I'd happily watch that video too .
I had a 2.5 late 2003 one. Roof didn’t work, needed a mot which it passed. Body work was a bit ratty but i tidied it up. Just needed a steering column motor on it so I got it refurbished for £400. All told it owed me £1250 and I sold it for £2000 so not bad. Yours nicer than the one I had
@@NathanMannin the motor was seized because of the water ingress all these z4 cars suffer with. I got it working by cleaning up the motor and relocating it BUT the hydraulic hose had a hole in it somewhere which I think is what the real issue with the roof was all along. I was going to sort it but it wasn’t worth my time, the roof still went up and down as the electric latches worked off the button so you could lower it manually and raise it again that way so it wasn’t a big deal.
I bought a Z4 3.0si Auto ( facelift model ) just to go to the Le Man 24Hr six years ago .. Super smooth engined car .Same wheels , one had a crack ( common ) so swapped for CSL reps . Durham Dave moved the roof motor .
Well done you’ve just told everyone your going to paint over the rust with hammerite to make it look better instead of getting rid of the rust first to prevent progression
Can’t believe how cheap these can be had for, I own a Honda S2000 and these have climbed in values a lot compared to the Z4 which is from the same era. Can’t beat a 2 seater convertible on a glorious summers day though.
Had 4 of these straight six engines. In a Z3, a 7 series, a 3 series and a 5 series. 3 out of 4 eventually blew their head gaskets with no prior cooling fault or other warning despite meticulous maintenance and not being thrashed. Great engines when they are healthy but.. Have I just been unlucky or have others had this experience?

I've had all iterations of the Z4 and currently have a 20 reg MSport 30i - I love 'em! You should have kept it - like you said, a lot of car for less than 1600 quid! :)
That dreaded trio of lights on the dash means your abs pump has sticking bushes. £2500 new fitted from a Main dealer, or £300-£400 to get reconditioned. With those lights on it’s not only means your have no abs brakes, traction control or stability control and its an instant MOT failure, I Know because mine failed on my 2007 Z4 Coupe. Luckily got the original reconditioned whilst I waited before my next MOT was due.
My wife had a 2.0 2007 z4. It was mostly a weekend and shopping car for her, until she had to use it as a daily commute car. That ruined it, and so, swapped it for a Audi TT. Miss the z4 and it’s styling
As a rule I don't drive or own any German cars, something handed down to me from my great-grandfather, but if I did, the Z4 would be towards the top of my list. The styling is really strong all-round, rwd, and who doesn't like a straight-6?!
Hi Matt. That was the only sensible way out of the car really wasn't it? The other road would have been longer than expected and much more costly! Good result.
The new owner will have a blast. Even if it only runs for another 2 years, you will have spend 2k on a fast, good looking, rwd cabriolet and enjoyed it for 2 years. Great deal if you ask me.
Please explain why "auto" lights are great? Drivers should use dipped in rain etc and auto lights don't always come on so it would appear you are driving without insurance! Someone out there correct me but last time I read the construction and use act / highway code if you use wipers then dip lights are required. This gives the insurance companies an out knowing how Imsorry BUT out to not pay.... 🧐
Was searching for one of these couple of years back as a weekend driver but decided it would be too harsh, bumpy ride etc. So I bought a 630i same era instead.... and not doing my research thoroughly ended up with sport suspension (fitted as oe apparently) and virtually new ( so I cant junk them) runflats 🙄 So I didnt get the supple ride quality I was after ideally, but still a really lovely motor and the 6 is still a real looker even at 18 years of age and excellent build quality. Just have to navigate the bumps....
You could take it on a road trip to Venice, I did it in a convertible in the summer one year and it was absolutely fantastic, stop overnight in a hotel and then burn back
They still look fresh. Your friend who bought the car got a great deal. So much car for the money. Can I be on your list of friends?!Something fascinating in taking an older car, a quick refresh, and potentially another chapter in the car’s life can be written. I hope he makes some memorable trips in it. 👍
Sounds nice matt and with a few quid spent on it on the wheels and general touch ups your mates got a bargain and hopefully looks after it great video matt 👍
Love these but even at 6’1” was too cramped for me. My Audi TT seat used to have seat height adjustment. Preferred the bmw but just too cramped for me. The price of this and an enthusiast will slowly refurbish this and in 15 yrs time will be worth a mint imo
What a thing for under two grand, soft top straight six with a manual, pay more for a doggy MX5 or several times more for an S2000. Matt, if you fancy a 350Z my son has a 2006 convertible he might be looking to move on as he wants an Ariel Atom now, not seen you do a 350Z, and its grey like the Z4.
BLoody hell Matt, the prices paid for cars in the UK is so different. A BMW Z4 2004 year with 288,000klm (auto) here in Australia is $8900! Even with our crap exchange rate that is still more than twice what you sold that car for. They are a good looking car but repairs here in Oz are ridiculous. I import all my MGF and MGTF and Skoda parts and even with freight I see savings of over 50%.
i have to admit i have never been a fan of any of the BMW Z cars, yes you can argue that the bigger engines are better than the smaller ones. maybe its because i did work experiance from school at Merc-benz commercial and then later also a bit of time at a light vehicle garage (had a test drive in passenger seat of a nice SLK once) so maybe im biased lol
Another great vid Matt. It was the grin when you put your foot down! If a car can do that to you, buy it or get another....just for fun...you only live once....

Z4 and Porsche Boxster have no competitions love both of them 🤩💪
Can’t agree there. I was faced with that choice in 2010 but chose a SLK350.
Kept it for 11 years and despite its woeful build quality and reliability, I loved it. Got a Z4 M40i now which makes me wish I’d tried a Z4 sooner
Sort of agree! Could never understand why Mazda never put a bigger engine in the Mx5!
@@colin7632The Mazda MX5 has roughly the same power to weight ratio as a Nissan 240z!
My partner has had two and bigger engine would make the car more expensive so it’s down to a budget build quality and refinement would need addressing. Before you know it you’ve a Z4 rival.
The MX5 is great at its price but really would need to be an MX7 😮
My 2000 Boxster is running well and has been a very reliable car and a blast to drive, particularly in the curves.
The Z4 is definitely a contender for a consideration!
Wondering on the leaking roof etc situation? If was fixed or justmopped up the leaks
What was wrong with your roof? Did you fix it?
@@NathanMannin the motor was seized because of the water ingress all these z4 cars suffer with. I got it working by cleaning up the motor and relocating it BUT the hydraulic hose had a hole in it somewhere which I think is what the real issue with the roof was all along. I was going to sort it but it wasn’t worth my time, the roof still went up and down as the electric latches worked off the button so you could lower it manually and raise it again that way so it wasn’t a big deal.
I have both foam pieces removed on mine. Sounds awesome! Mines a toy and not daily driver though.
The oil smell could be mould in the vents/heaters. I had it in a 1 series
I bought a Z4 3.0si Auto ( facelift model ) just to go to the Le Man 24Hr six years ago .. Super smooth engined car .Same wheels , one had a crack ( common ) so swapped for CSL reps . Durham Dave moved the roof motor .
I have a mint 2.5 SE 2010 60,000 miles, unmarked ivory leather and alloys, met Havana in storage
Well done you’ve just told everyone your going to paint over the rust with hammerite to make it look better instead of getting rid of the rust first to prevent progression
You can’t ’get rid of rust’. You can just treat it as I said.
One of the best cars I've driven was a 2007 3.0 Si coupe. Fantastic handling and a lot of fun.
Can’t believe how cheap these can be had for, I own a Honda S2000 and these have climbed in values a lot compared to the Z4 which is from the same era. Can’t beat a 2 seater convertible on a glorious summers day though.
Both days of the year😊
A beauty of a buy! what a steal for that price! here in NZ that car would be $20,000!
Always had a soft spot for the Z4, Love the alloys. I think I would go for the coupe. Especially living in the driech west coast of Scotland! Love the video. I would have kept it till after the summer. Great vid.
Hi Matt
Another fun video! Great.
I never thought of putting the heated passenger seat on for ambient heat..top tip !
I was just thinking don't rev a cold engine then you said it! I hate being predictable:(
Love the ice cool hoodie colour.
Take care
Tony
Loving the consistent uploads! Getting close to 400k!
Hi Matt. Great vision as usual. Just wondering when you buy a car why do they end up in that same car park and who brings them there??. Keep up the great content. 👍🚗
Must have features - convertible, 2-seater, RWD, quick - meets compromises - economy, family - and a 320d it is.
I'm surprised you didn't take it to Spain , cheap runabout for you , the idea is OK but I don't no about costs etc , Cheers mate 👍.
You could take it on a road trip to Venice, I did it in a convertible in the summer one year and it was absolutely fantastic, stop overnight in a hotel and then burn back
Why does a bmw straight 6 just sound so right!? Great video as always 👍
They still look fresh. Your friend who bought the car got a great deal. So much car for the money. Can I be on your list of friends?!Something fascinating in taking an older car, a quick refresh, and potentially another chapter in the car’s life can be written. I hope he makes some memorable trips in it. 👍
I love this Z4 and the previous Z3.
Whatever you do, don’t test drive the M version of that - Z4M. I’ve accidentally done that 6 years ago. Still got it and still love it 👍😄
Sounds nice matt and with a few quid spent on it on the wheels and general touch ups your mates got a bargain and hopefully looks after it great video matt 👍
My old gaffer had the Z4M In this colour it was stunning he part exed it for £7k......madness great video mate
What a steal! These start at €6k in the Netherlands with 150K+ miles
Sounds gorgeous and probably cost less to run than equivalent age boxster.....
Z4’s look pretty with the top down but are no oil painting with the hood up. Good video, thanks Mat.
What about the swimming pool in the boot? Did you sell it with that feature?
My dad has a 2008 Z4 2.5si in dark blue. It spends most of it's time in the garage, but it only has less than 85,000 miles on the clock.
Love that car. Need something like that in my life..... Another entertaining video....
Hi Matt Nice video as always. Intrigued by the car vertical reports… how often does it flag up an issue of significance for you to put you off? Really enjoy your contents. All best Laurence
Lovely stuff..not my words Matt..the words of Shakin Stevens
Hi Matt, I have just bought a 2016 Z4 2.0 M Sport in beautiful Estoril Blue Metallic, just on a whim, must be my age lol, live nr Marple so you may see me around 😊
