While im uneasy about the price of these things and not too hot on a 4 cyclinder turbo. Im glad to see toyota actually putting in the work to make this a class leading truck, was worried it was going to be like the tundra where its only justt caught up to competition after all these years.
The hybrid is absolutely useless on the higher trims due to the added weight so fuel numbers will not be anything significant. The four-cylinder turbos are sort of weak also. I won't touch a midsize truck unless it has 300+ HP.

Toyota did not disappoint, these trucks looks good! That said, they are way overpriced but a man can always dream. I love that they still look like Tacomas, unlike what they did to the Tundra. I would go Trailhunter since it has a bigger bed. But if it wasn’t for that I would go TRD Pro. Both really cool…
Little baby Tundra is here! 😢 2d gens are the most reliable and best ones to buy. You know Toyota is going to take this new grille look on the 4Runner too. All cars and trucks look the same these days 😩 Those seats rock though love the red color!
15 years in a Gen 2. Can confirm. Gen 3 went backwards. Driving one currently. 12-14 Tacoma is the best midsize we've been offered. Drum brakes and all.
According to dealers I've talked to regarding ordering a Trailhunter or Tacoma in general with options put on from the factory so you can roll into your monthy payment and get what you want, there's no custom order option for the Tacomas. I've watched and listened to other podcast and videos where Toyota Spoke persons, influencers, interviewers, reviewers say you can but not according to the place you actually purchase them.
As an offroader and owner of multiple Toyota trucks - the one thing that stuck out to me badly that I don't like is the skid plate teeth and gap between the underside skid and bumper protection. That gap and "teeth" are going to dig into obstacles and become a real PITA~ see 14:07
Then dont pay dealer markup??? Dealers keep charging it because people keep PAYING it. There are dealers that do msrp and if you cant find one. BE PATIENT. Dealers keep charging because people keep PAYING.
One big issue with these "off road" trucks are the plastic front bumpers. Your not going to add a winch with a plastic bumper and the first time you hit something that does not agree with the approach angle (Tommy's demise), you will probably break some plastic. Very nice refresh overall but I believe the aftermarket will need to fill the bumper gap to complete these builds.
@@van_mod1 I assume this too. May take some time but hopefully not long. Toy didn't make it easy to do when looking at the front end and how everything lines up.
So, the pro is now targeted for desert running with the racing seats. And the TH is the new rock crawler. Heard them say it has DC sway bar. And rear lockers. Did not mention any MTS, CC or KDSS options tho. I would take the TH in its current colors and configuration. Very nice looking rig. (if I needed a small 2.4 liter engine truck)
watch the other TFL videos on the new tacoma...Andre has said the new seating position is great, no complaints (they even have one with the lead designer, Sheldon, stating that they specifically designed the seating position to be higher and accommodate taller people).
Doesn't it seem strange that the trim that's more for rock crawling/overlanding (which has a LOT of head bobbing action) is NOT the one with the seat gimbel that reduces head bobbing??
Most people will probably better off with a TRD Off-Road and adding a lift kit anyway, which should have a sunroof option. The decision not to have sunroof makes sense on the Trailhunter given it’s marketed towards overland, which you expect to mount things to the roof anyway.
Of these 2 I think I'd rather have the Trailhunter. I think I might like the look of it slightly better and it seems to be more usable for everything but the Desert Running. And if I was going to use the bed I think I like the idea of a longer bed.
Good video! My biggest issue is that it seems not a single channel seemed to report anything about the TRD Pro interior. It’s the ONLY interior that is shown and it’s…well…LOUD. No one bothered to ask the simple question: “Will this model come in more than one interior color scheme?” Flown out to Hawaii, put up in hotels, and it seems like most everyone just desperately tried to get as much video footage as they could, but never asked one of the most glaringly obvious questions? I’ve watched just about every release video from last week, and man…not even a “We asked but they couldn’t answer” answer.
Agreed. The design of this and also the tundra is ugly imo. Much prefer the current 5th gen Tacoma and old tundra looks-wise. Will be jealous of more powerful motor, but that’s about it.
So cool, great videos as always! Love the new redesign. It sounds like they added more room for us taller people in the front, did they add more room in the back? Our 2018 Tacoma crew cab is so tight both legroom and headroom.
@@erikkuhlemeyer9402 not jealous at all. I do not want a complicated truck. It’s a tool for me, not a status symbol. What I do not like is that there is nothing for the average guy who needs a good truck. You have to buy used and the junk they are making today doesn’t last because they are overly complicated.
Everyone keeps saying save the manuals, but yet you can't get a manual in any of the off-road trucks! Then they're going to say there's no demand for the manual. Every manufacturer keeps doing this, "I want a manual", "well you can have it, just as long as it's in our slowest and the least versatile of our vehicles". It's also sad to see that the seats from the Pro can't be optioned into the Trailhunter and no sunroof available in it either. Also, dear God, Roman let Andre finish talking for once. Andre is always in the middle of talking about something more important, then Roman, "Hey, let's talk about this useless feature instead." "Hey, Andre, stop talking. Let's talk about the JBL speaker, (this portion of the video is sponsored by JBL, yeah JBL) How many times do we have to hear about the most useless feature of the vehicle? Don't get me wrong. I love the content and coverage, I just hate Roman constantly cutting Andre off when he's explaining something more important.
I love skid plates, but when you have a lot down there and you're overlanding in a very hot place, for example, like Africa, Australia, or middle east the whole exterior underbody get really hot because the skid plates trap the heat and also store heat
That may be true. But unless someone is shipping one from North America, it would be the Hilux. Or a LC79. Not a Taco. And most people won't be overlanding in Death Valley the middle of summer.
@Eric Schneider Yes, actually, theres a lot of people who overland during the summer in those regions. There's people who are living off the grid, and all they do is overland different parts of the world, and they do that for years.
@@tariqsalim2222 I didn’t say no one did it. But a majority of North American overlanders would be farther north. Or at a higher elevation in the middle of summer. The rest of the world is irrelevant. The Tacoma is only available in North America. The rest of the world gets the Hilux. Which is an entirely different vehicle and chassis. And anyone who does it full time, or is willing to pay to ship it overseas is not going to drive a factory built rig. They will build their own rig.
With the new Tacoma, Toyota appears to have done a lot of things right. Probably one of the most promising things is that Toyota may have finally fixed some of the horrible ergonomics of the previous generations. That said, here are my big three criticisms: 1. ALL Tacoma 4WD models need an "all-wheel-drive" selection in the transfer case. Full-time 4WD for patchy slick highway conditions in winter is very handy. 2. The TRD Pro and Trailhunter need a front locking differential. 3. Ground clearance in the TRD Pro is adequate, but not great. 4. Biggest criticism of all--true of ALL of the new mid-sizes--the price. The TRD Pro and Trailhunter will likely have an MSRP of $60K+, a price that makes the trucks unaffordable to most of the demographic that would be the most likely buyers of the trucks. Sort of like the beautiful fancy cars of the Great Depression era--beautiful and performance-laden for the era, but only about 1% of the population could afford one.
1. No, this is a feature for people who can't be bothered to learn to drive and expect their vehicle to do it for them, take a taxi. 2. No, a front locker is nearly useless and is a just for show, bragging rights, kind of option. Locker usage is required mostly when climbing steep hills, and there will be little weight on the front axle, so there will be very little that a front locker can do to help. 3. Agreed. 4. Sales figures do not agree with you. Plenty of people are buying $100,000 trucks. I predict Tacoma will continue to sell well.
@@fantabuloussnuffaluffagus I've been driving 4WD vehicles for over 50 years. I know what works and what doesn't. "Full-time" 4WD can be a great tool for numerous driving situations. Necessary? No, but nice to have. A front locker is nice to have for very low traction situations, however, it must be used judiciously because a locked front axle will tend to plow ahead straight in very slick situations, even with the front wheels turned. As to prices, I have friends who are new car dealers. They are seeing serious consumer price resistance at MSRP's over $60K, and, with increasing interest rates, that resistance point may be $50 or less within a few months.
Best truck I ever owned: 2001 Toyota Tacoma 4wd Regular Cab w/ manual transmission. Had 11.4 inches of stock ground clearance and better fuel economy than many of these modern rigs. Much better approach/departure angles, too. Cost $17,000 in 2001. So about $28,000 in today’s dollars.
The 3rd Gen is my favorite style. This one will have to grow on me. I don’t drive my 2016 TRD Off Road much but it’s there when I need it and with only 28K miles it should last me for years to come.
I like the new Tacoma. However, I feel that Toyota should of done more with the Trailhunter to further differentiate from the TRD Pro. Other than the shocks, snorkel, exhaust, interior, bed utility bar as well as a longer bed, the Trailhunter is, to me, very similar to the TRD Pro in terms of options. What Toyota should of done with the Trailhunter, is add an ARB front steel bumper that's winch capable or with a winch already installed, an extra 2-3 inches of lift, front locker, full underbody skid plate, and 35 inch tires. That would truly make the Trailhunter the top of the line Tacoma and differentiate it from the TRD Pro.
No front locking diff? No full-time 4WD? No front recovery hooks? No winch? No 35’s? These had better be aggressively priced if they hope to sell them against the current competition. They are missing a lot of key features.
Doesn't compare to ZR2 as far as ability. Front locker is everything. Id rather have a front standard locker and no rear. A lot of window dressing on the Toyota
@@robertchapman4488 didn't say that it did. Original comment was saying because of the lack of options it'll need to be aggressively priced which isn't true. The current model is old and missing all the features he listed and still outsells the other new trucks all day long.
We are in the market for a new mid size truck. I've watched a lot of your videos, and a lot talk about the possibilities of spec, adding accessories and all the options you can choose. Love these new Tacomas. But seeing that in the Los Angeles area/So Cal dealers are adding a $20,000 mark-up to existing 4Runners TRD Pro, this is going to be nasty. (Yeah I know it's a 4Runner not a Taco, but that is the markup level for in demand Toyotas)

@@truth959 No. People are too soft and have the need to carry their home and all their junks just to go out camping.
@@induction7895 I can tell you never went overlanding before in your life. It's not being soft to carry adequate supplies to make sure you survive the journey over miles of very rugged terrain that no bicycle could make it through. Go be a troll somewhere else.
@@truth959 People have traveled the entire world on bicycles, motorcycles, and all sorts of vehicles. Even in your scenario for places you cannot reach by bicycle and absolutely need to have a truck, are you telling me that you absolutely need to have one with 6 feet bed and cannot do with 5 or 5.5 feet one? Talk about being soft.
While im uneasy about the price of these things and not too hot on a 4 cyclinder turbo. Im glad to see toyota actually putting in the work to make this a class leading truck, was worried it was going to be like the tundra where its only justt caught up to competition after all these years.
Outside of the hybrid engine and the Trailhunter, it has only "caught up".
The hybrid is absolutely useless on the higher trims due to the added weight so fuel numbers will not be anything significant. The four-cylinder turbos are sort of weak also. I won't touch a midsize truck unless it has 300+ HP.
Some, stay ignorant, quiet, and do not write. Just leave everybody alone.
For my wife I have the 2023 highlander with the 4 cylander turbo and it has plenty of power and torque. I drove it on a family trip to Texas from Indiana back and forth. It was pure easy mode for on ramps and passing.
Why do you want so much hp for a truck? I prefer torque in my truck and if i want something to drive fast I'd just buy a car.
Great video series on the Taco guys!! I think Roman just gave away his 24 long term test vehicle the 24' Taco Trailhunter. Build out the Andre's Colorado for overlanding and then take both to Montana. Visit the Xpedition Overland team while you are there. Epic!
So they sacrifice rear seat leg room for some reebok pump seats while making you think they're necessary and charging more for non adjustable headrest? Got it 👍🏽 Lol

That TRD Pro looks awesome, with the white and black top.

It's crazy how before all these next gen midsize trucks, it was:
1. Tacoma
2. Everything else
Now it's:
1. Tacoma
2. Everything else
Nice truck. I hate how tall the dash is. RIP pedestrians crossing the street. You’re going to need a camera to see out the front.
Lord have mercy…. The white and black one are drop dead amazing 🤩. I hope I can afford it when the price drops 🤣.
Can you get a 6MT with the TRD Pro and the Trailhunter?
As an offroader and owner of multiple Toyota trucks - the one thing that stuck out to me badly that I don't like is the skid plate teeth and gap between the underside skid and bumper protection. That gap and "teeth" are going to dig into obstacles and become a real PITA~ see 14:07
TH will cost 68-75k
These are beautiful trucks!! I like the Trailhunter more because the red is just too flashy.
Bought my 2018 TRD Off Road for 35,000 new in 2017. Those days are over😢 Have a feeling I wouldn't be able to afford the new one. Hope I'm wrong.
youre not wrong these are going to be so expensive especially right away with dealer markups.
You won’t be able to. It’s going to be like 60k plus after dealers mark them up
Then dont pay dealer markup??? Dealers keep charging it because people keep PAYING it. There are dealers that do msrp and if you cant find one. BE PATIENT. Dealers keep charging because people keep PAYING.
@@kylesteinhauser2535 only 60? Shit. Msrp will be 65, and there will be 15k market adjustments 😂
Completely agree. I'm sure ARB already has (or will have) a front bumper with recovery points and winch housing.
@@van_mod1 I assume this too. May take some time but hopefully not long. Toy didn't make it easy to do when looking at the front end and how everything lines up.
Both the pro and trail hunter = mall crawler.
I would like the trailhunter with the seats of the TRD pro.
Too bad they went turbo instead of longevity
Biggest question is how is the seating position?!?!?! That’s the only thing that has held me back from a taco
Yes! Absolutely zero commentary on this. Perhaps Toyota put a gag order on the reviewing media...
watch the other TFL videos on the new tacoma...Andre has said the new seating position is great, no complaints (they even have one with the lead designer, Sheldon, stating that they specifically designed the seating position to be higher and accommodate taller people).
Doesn't it seem strange that the trim that's more for rock crawling/overlanding (which has a LOT of head bobbing action) is NOT the one with the seat gimbel that reduces head bobbing??
I want a PreRunner. My 2015 PreRunner with fox 2.5 DSC rac shocks and 34’s have served me well. I love the 4 cylinder. Never a problem
Wish there was a front locker option. Also disappointing that the Trailhunter won't have a sunroof, I have one in my 2017 and use it all the time.
That was the reason I was looking at the Trailhunter. Ranger still doesn't have a sunroof, so it's out and so is the Trailhunter.
ZR2 has those things I believe.
I'll buy the Trailhunter!
Maybe I'm alone in this but I'm thinking Toyota has totally missed the mark with the 2024 Tacoma
Agreed. The design of this and also the tundra is ugly imo. Much prefer the current 5th gen Tacoma and old tundra looks-wise. Will be jealous of more powerful motor, but that’s about it.
I agree. I dont love the looks and I’m sad we don’t have a more compact option. These trucks are the same size as gen 1 tundras.
Dealerships are drooling right now getting ready to slap 25k+ markups
So cool, great videos as always! Love the new redesign. It sounds like they added more room for us taller people in the front, did they add more room in the back? Our 2018 Tacoma crew cab is so tight both legroom and headroom.
You don't buy a mid size for back seat room🤣
now THATS something i wanna upgrade. turbo, straight pipe, interior lights, lets go
Ahhh… continually over complicating trucks, driving the price too high. The nature of the truck market today.
Don’t be jealous. Just as many basic ass trucks get sold every year. Watch something else
@@niceguyrides that’s not true. Guessing you have yet to own a “complicated truck”
Crazy that rear Disc Brakes are a new feature on the tacoma....it is 2023....right?
You’d complain if they didn’t add them, you’re complaining that they barely added them. You alright ?
That said, here are my big three criticisms:
I still think the hybrid option in the upper-tier models is useless.
Yeah a great depression is 100% around the corner buying anything that's not water, food and sand bags would be pretty stupid right meow
@@rockymountainjazzfan1822 All that time and you still haven't learned to drive. Shame.
Excellent video Roman and Andre.
Remember when the Tacoma was the simple , affordable, basic, reliable small size truck...Pepridge Farms remembers.

Doubtful
Andre and Roman, which one would you take on Colorado’s trails and to Moab? I’m frequently in both environments and am searching for a new truck.
In 10 years, there are going to be a lot of cool used trucks that I can afford. 😂
The 3rd Gen is my favorite style. This one will have to grow on me. I don’t drive my 2016 TRD Off Road much but it’s there when I need it and with only 28K miles it should last me for years to come.
Your seat position sucks
Very good suggestion, wish Toyota would've taken this into account
then it would sell for > 100k and everyone would complain about the price :\
What's more capable for off roading?
Give it by fall, these will be all over PNW roads
I think I’m more interested in the Trailhunter. I’d really like to see how it handles on Moab trails.

These had better be aggressively priced if they hope to sell them against the current competition. They are missing a lot of key features.
Doesn't compare to ZR2 as far as ability. Front locker is everything. Id rather have a front standard locker and no rear. A lot of window dressing on the Toyota
